Evaluation of Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Follow-up and Treatment Response Assessment of Lymphoma: Results of an 18F-FDG-PET/CT–Controlled Prospective Study in 64 Patients

Purpose: To determine the value of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI-MRI) for treatment response assessment in 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG)–avid lymphoma.

Experimental Design: Patients with FDG-avid Hodgkin (HL) or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) at pretherapeutic 18F-FDG-PET/CT, who had also undergone pretherapeutic whole-body DWI-MRI, were included in this prospective study. Depending on the histologic lymphoma subtype, patients received different systemic treatment regimens, and follow-up DWI-MRI and 18F-FDG-PET/CT were performed at one or more time points, depending on the clinical course. For each follow-up DWI-MRI, region-based rates of agreement, and rates of agreement in terms of treatment response (complete remission, partial remission, stable disease, or progressive disease), relative to the corresponding 18F-FDG-PET/CT, were calculated.

Results: Sixty-four patients were included: 10 with HL, 22 with aggressive NHL, and 32 with indolent NHL. The overall region-based agreement of DWI-MRI with 18F-FDG-PET/CT was 99.4%. For the 51 interim examinations (performed after 1–3 therapy cycles), region-based agreement of DWI-MRI with 18F-FDG-PET/CT was 99.2%, and for the 48 end-of-treatment examinations, agreement was 99.8%. No significant differences, in terms of region-based agreement between DWI-MRI and 18F-FDG-PET/CT, were observed between the three lymphoma groups (HL, aggressive NHL, indolent NHL; P = 0.25), or between interim and end-of-treatment examinations (P = 0.21). With regard to treatment response assessment, DWI-MRI agreed with 18F-FDG-PET/CT in 99 of 102 follow-up examinations (97.1%), with a κ value of 0.94 (P < 0.0001).

Conclusions: In patients with FDG-avid lymphoma, DWI-MRI may be a feasible alternative to 18F-FDG-PET/CT for follow-up and treatment response assessment. Clin Cancer Res; 21(11); 2506–13. ©2015 AACR.

11C-methionine PET/CT imaging of 99mTc-MIBI-SPECT/CT-negative patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and previous neck surgery

CONTEXT

(99m)Tc-Methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (MIBI) scintigraphy is a standard preoperative localization imaging modality in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Its accuracy in localizing a hyperactive parathyroid gland after previous cervical surgery is limited. Recently, (11)C-methionine has been introduced as a promising radiotracer for pHPT imaging. Yet, few data exist for this technique in patients with persisting or recurrent pHPT before reoperation.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to investigate the ability of (11)C-methionine positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) to localize a parathyroid disorder after cervical surgery and negative postsurgical (99m)Tc-MIBI single-photon emission CT (SPECT)/CT.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS

Fifteen patients (6 males, 9 females; age range, 36-85 years) with pHPT and negative (99m)Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT who had undergone earlier neck surgery because of pHPT and/or thyroid disorder were recruited. Twelve of the 15 patients had thyroidectomy for goiter or differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Ten patients had previous parathyroid surgery for pHPT, and 2 patients had a history of parathyroid carcinoma. Thirteen of 15 patients showed elevated levels of intact PTH at the time of PET/CT imaging, whereas all patients had elevated serum calcium values.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS

Pathological results of contrast-enhanced (11)C-methionine PET/CT and surgical results were evaluated.

RESULTS

In 6 of 15 patients (11)C-methionine PET/CT showed a hypermetabolic focus in the upper mediastinum in 2 patients, in the thoracic outlet in 1 patient, and in the cervical region in 3 patients. In 9 of the 15 patients, no hyperactive parathyroid gland could be visualized. Reoperation was performed in 5 of 6 patients without surgical complications. One patient refused surgery. In 2 of the 5 patients, a transsternal procedure was performed. Correlating with the (11)C-methionine PET/CT results, a single parathyroid adenoma was found in 4 patients and parathyroid carcinoma metastasis in 1 patient.

CONCLUSION

(11)C-Methionine PET/CT is a useful complementary imaging technique to localize parathyroid adenoma or carcinoma in (99m)Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT-negative patients.

Clinical features, treatment and outcome of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the ocular adnexa: single center experience of 60 patients

Background

Orbital marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (OAML) constitutes for the most frequent diagnosis in orbital lymphoma. Relatively little data, however, have been reported in larger cohorts of patients staged in a uniform way and no therapy standard exists to date.

Material and Methods

We have retrospectively analyzed 60 patients diagnosed and treated at our institution 1999–2012. Median age at diagnosis was 64 years (IQR 51–75) and follow-up time 43 months (IQR 16–92). All patients had undergone uniform extensive staging and histological diagnosis was made by a reference pathologist according to the WHO classification.

Results

The majority of patients presented with stage IE (n = 40/60, 67%), three had IIE/IIIE and the remaining 17 stage IVE. Seven patients with IVE had bilateral orbital disease whereas the others showed involvement of further organs. Treatment data were available in 58 patients. Local treatment with radiotherapy (14/58, 24%) or surgery (3/58, 5%) resulted in response in 82% of patients. A total of 26 patients (45%) received systemic treatment with a response rate of 85%. Nine patients received antibiotics as initial therapy; response rate was 38%. Watchful-waiting was the initial approach in 6/58 patients. In total 28/58 patients (48%) progressed and were given further therapy. Median time-to-progression in this cohort was 20 months (IQR 9–39). There was no difference in time-to-progression after first-line therapy between the different therapy arms (p = 0.14). Elevated beta-2-microglobulin, plasmacytic differentiation, autoimmune disorder and site of lymphoma were not associated with a higher risk for progress.

Conclusion

Our data underscore the excellent prognosis of OAML irrespective of initial therapy, as there was no significant difference in time-to-progression and response between local or systemic therapy. In the absence of randomized trials, the least toxic individual approach should be chosen for OAML.

(18)F-DOPA PET/CT and MRI: description of 12 histologically-verified pheochromocytomas

AIM

To describe the (18)F-fluorodihydro-xyphenylalanine ((18)F-DOPA), positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of pheochromocytomas, with a focus on the presence or absence of typical MRI features.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eleven patients with histologically-verified pheochromocytoma [sporadic (n=9), multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2A syndrome (n=2)] were enrolled retrospectively. All patients underwent an MRI examination of the upper abdomen. Nine out of 11 patients underwent (18)F-DOPA PET/CT, and the remaining two patients underwent independent PET and computed tomography (CT) examinations. (18)F-DOPA-PET/CT examinations were considered positive when an increased tracer accumulation in the adrenal region, as shown on CT images, was observed. When an adrenal mass was detected on MRI, the T1 and T2 signal intensity and contrast enhancement pattern were recorded. Based on MR characteristics, the lesions were divided into typical and atypical.

RESULTS

Ten out of 11 patients had one lesion, while one patient had two lesions. All pheochromocytomas were detected by both PET/CT and MRI. On (18)F-DOPA scans, all lesions showed an increased tracer accumulation, with a mean maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of 13.7±5.75. Eight out of 12 pheochromocytomas exhibited typical MRI features, with intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images in-phase, absence of signal drop on T1-weighted images out-of-phase, high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, and clear contrast enhancement in the arterial phase. The remaining four lesions exhibited atypical MRI features, namely absence of one of the listed criteria.

CONCLUSION

In the assessment of pheochromocytoma, the combination of (18)F-DOPA PET with MRI is superior to MRI-alone. (18)F-DOPA PET/MRI may yield a higher diagnostic confidence for the detection of pheochromocytoma than (18)F-DOPA PET/CT.

Performance of whole-body integrated 18F-FDG PET/MR in comparison to PET/CT for evaluation of malignant bone lesions

Because of its higher soft-tissue contrast, whole-body integrated PET/MR offers potential advantages over PET/CT for evaluation of bone lesions. However, unlike PET/CT, PET/MR ignores the contribution of cortical bone in the attenuation map. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the diagnostic performance of whole-body integrated (18)F-FDG PET/MR specifically for bone lesions and to analyze differences in standardized uptake value (SUV) quantification between PET/MR and PET/CT.

METHODS

One hundred nineteen patients with (18)F-FDG-avid primary malignancies underwent a single-injection, dual-imaging protocol using (18)F-FDG on a PET/CT scanner and a subsequent PET/MR scan with a T1-weighted volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) Dixon sequence for attenuation correction and an unenhanced coronal T1-weighted turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence for bone analysis. Three sets of images (CT with PET [from PET/CT; set A], T1-weighted VIBE Dixon with PET [set B], and T1-weighted TSE with PET [both from PET/MR; set C]) were analyzed. Two readers rated every lesion using a 4-point scale for lesion conspicuity on PET, a 4-point scale for anatomic allocation of PET-positive lesions, and a 5-point scale for the nature of every lesion based on its appearance on morphologic imaging and uptake on PET. For all lesions and for representative regions of normal bone, SUV analysis was performed for PET/MR and PET/CT.

RESULTS

In total, 98 bone lesions were identified in 33 of 119 patients, and 630 regions of normal bone were analyzed. Visual lesion conspicuity on PET was comparable for PET/CT (mean rating, 2.82 ± 0.45) and PET/MR (2.75 ± 0.51; P = 0.3095). Anatomic delineation and allocation of suggestive lesions was significantly superior with T1-weighted TSE MRI (mean rating, 2.84 ± 0.42) compared with CT (2.57 ± 0.54, P = 0.0001) or T1-weighted VIBE Dixon MRI (2.57 ± 0.54, P = 0.0002). No significant difference in correct classification of malignant bone lesions was found among sets A (85/90), B (84/90), and C (86/90). For bone lesions and regions of normal bone, a highly significant correlation existed between the mean SUVs for PET/MR and PET/CT (R = 0.950 and 0.917, respectively, each P < 0.001). However, substantially lower mean SUVs were found for PET/MR than for PET/CT both for bone lesions (12.4% ± 15.5%) and for regions of normal bone (30.1% ± 27.5%).

CONCLUSION

Compared with PET/CT, fully integrated whole-body (18)F-FDG PET/MR is technically and clinically robust for evaluation of bone lesions despite differences in attenuation correction. PET/MR, including diagnostic T1-weighted TSE sequences, was superior to PET/CT for anatomic delineation and allocation of bone lesions. This finding might be of clinical relevance in selected cases--for example, primary bone tumors, early bone marrow infiltration, and tumors with low uptake on PET. Thus, a diagnostic T1-weighted TSE sequence is recommended as a routine protocol for oncologic PET/MR.

Texture-based and diffusion-weighted discrimination of parotid gland lesions on MR images at 3.0 Tesla

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether texture-based analysis of standard MRI sequences and diffusion-weighted imaging can help in the discrimination of parotid gland masses. The MR images of 38 patients with a biopsy- or surgery-proven parotid gland mass were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were examined on the same 3.0 Tesla MR unit, with one standard protocol. The ADC (apparent diffusion coefficient) values of the tumors were measured with three regions of interest (ROIs) covering the entire tumor. Texture-based analysis was performed with the texture analysis software MaZda (version 4.7), with ROI measurements covering the entire tumor in three slices. COC (co-occurrence matrix), RUN (run-length matrix), GRA (gradient), ARM (auto-regressive model), and WAV (wavelet transform) features were calculated for all ROIs. Three subsets of 10 texture features each were used for a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in combination with k nearest neighbor classification (k-NN). Using histology as a standard of reference, benign tumors, including subtypes, and malignant tumors were compared with regard to ADC and texture-based values, with a one-way analysis of variance with post-hoc t-tests. Significant differences were found in the mean ADC values between Warthin tumors and pleomorphic adenomas, as well as between Warthin tumors and benign lesions. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images contained the most relevant textural information for the discrimination between benign and malignant parotid masses, and also for the discrimination between pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin tumors. STIR images contained the least relevant texture features, particularly for the discrimination between pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin tumors. Texture analysis proved to differentiate benign from malignant lesions, as well as pleomorphic adenomas from Warthin tumors, based on standard T(1w) sequences (without and with contrast). Of all benign parotid masses, Warthin tumors had significantly lower ADC values than the other entities.

Texture-based classification of different gastric tumors at contrast-enhanced CT

PURPOSE

To determine the feasibility of texture analysis for the classification of gastric adenocarcinoma, lymphoma, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors on contrast-enhanced hydrodynamic-MDCT images.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The arterial phase scans of 47 patients with adenocarcinoma (AC) and a histologic tumor grade of [AC-G1, n=4, G1, n=4; AC-G2, n=7; AC-G3, n=16]; GIST, n=15; and lymphoma, n=5, and the venous phase scans of 48 patients with AC-G1, n=3; AC-G2, n=6; AC-G3, n=14; GIST, n=17; lymphoma, n=8, were retrospectively reviewed. Based on regions of interest, texture analysis was performed, and features derived from the gray-level histogram, run-length and co-occurrence matrix, absolute gradient, autoregressive model, and wavelet transform were calculated. Fisher coefficients, probability of classification error, average correlation coefficients, and mutual information coefficients were used to create combinations of texture features that were optimized for tumor differentiation. Linear discriminant analysis in combination with a k-nearest neighbor classifier was used for tumor classification.

RESULTS

On arterial-phase scans, texture-based lesion classification was highly successful in differentiating between AC and lymphoma, and GIST and lymphoma, with misclassification rates of 3.1% and 0%, respectively. On venous-phase scans, texture-based classification was slightly less successful for AC vs. lymphoma (9.7% misclassification) and GIST vs. lymphoma (8% misclassification), but enabled the differentiation between AC and GIST (10% misclassification), and between the different grades of AC (4.4% misclassification). No texture feature combination was able to adequately distinguish between all three tumor types.

CONCLUSION

Classification of different gastric tumors based on textural information may aid radiologists in establishing the correct diagnosis, at least in cases where the differential diagnosis can be narrowed down to two histological subtypes.

Evaluation of native hyaline cartilage and repair tissue after two cartilage repair surgery techniques with 23Na MR imaging at 7 T: initial experience

OBJECTIVE

To compare the sodium normalized mean signal intensity (NMSI) values between patients after bone marrow stimulation (BMS) and matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) cartilage repair procedures.

METHODS

Nine BMS and nine MACT patients were included. Each BMS patient was matched with one MACT patient according to age [BMS 36.7 ± 10.7 (mean ± standard deviation) years; MACT 36.9 ± 10.0 years], postoperative interval (BMS 33.5 ± 25.3 months; MACT 33.2 ± 25.7 months), and defect location. All magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements were performed on a 7 T system. Proton images served for morphological evaluation of repair tissue using the magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue (MOCART) scoring system. Sodium NMSI values in the repair area and morphologically normal cartilage were calculated. Clinical outcome was assessed right after MRI. Analysis of covariance, t-tests, and Pearson correlation coefficients were evaluated.

RESULTS

Sodium NMSI was significantly lower in BMS (P = 0.004) and MACT (P = 0.006) repair tissue, compared to reference cartilage. Sodium NMSI was not different between the reference cartilage in MACT and BMS patients (P = 0.664), however it was significantly higher in MACT than in BMS repair tissue (P = 0.028). Better clinical outcome was observed in BMS than in MACT patients. There was no difference between MOCART scores for MACT and BMS patients (P = 0.915). We did not observe any significant correlation between MOCART score and sodium repair tissue NMSI (r = -0.001; P = 0.996).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest higher glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, and therefore, repair tissue of better quality in MACT than in BMS patients. Sodium imaging might be beneficial in non-invasive evaluation of cartilage repair surgery efficacy.

Quantitative analysis of lumbar intervertebral disc abnormalities at 3.0 Tesla: value of T(2) texture features and geometric parameters

T(2) relaxation time mapping provides information about the biochemical status of intervertebral discs. The present study aimed to determine whether texture features extracted from T(2) maps or geometric parameters are sensitive to the presence of abnormalities at the posterior aspect of lumbar intervertebral discs, i.e. bulging and herniation. Thirty-one patients (21 women and 10 men; age range 18-51 years) with low back pain were enrolled. MRI of the lumbar spine at 3.0 Tesla included morphological T(1) - and T(2) -weighted fast spin-echo sequences, and multi-echo spin-echo sequences that were used to construct T(2) maps. On morphological MRI, discs were visually graded into 'normal', 'bulging' or 'herniation'. On T(2) maps, texture analysis (based on the co-occurrence matrix and wavelet transform) and geometry analysis of the discs were performed. The three T(2) texture features and geometric parameters best-suited for distinguishing between normal discs and discs with bulging or herniation were determined using Fisher coefficients. Statistical analysis comprised ANCOVA and post hoc t-tests. Eighty-two discs were classified as 'normal', 49 as 'bulging' and 20 showed 'herniation.' The T(2) texture features Entropy and Difference Variance, and all three pre-selected geometric parameters differed significantly between normal and bulging, normal and herniated, and bulging and herniated discs (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that T(2) texture features and geometric parameters are sensitive to the presence of abnormalities at the posterior aspect of lumbar intervertebral discs, and may thus be useful as quantitative biomarkers that predict disease.

Gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate enhancement kinetics in the menisci of asymptomatic subjects: a first step towards a dedicated dGEMRIC (delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage)-like protocol for biochemical imaging of the menisci

It was our aim to investigate the gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (Gd-DTPA(2-) ) enhancement kinetics in the menisci of the knee joint over a prolonged period of time. Six asymptomatic volunteers (four men and two women; mean age, 25 ± 2.4 years) were enrolled. Sagittal, T(1) -weighted, spin-echo MR sequences of the right knee joint were obtained at 3 T. Imaging was performed before (baseline), 1 h after and in half-hour intervals up to 9 h after the intravenous administration of 0.2 mmol/kg of Gd-DTPA(2-) . To measure the rates of contrast enhancement relative to the baseline, regions of interest that covered the anterior and posterior horns of the medial and lateral meniscus were defined on each of two adjacent sections, and enhancement curves were constructed. An enhancement peak between 2.5 and 4.5 h after Gd-DTPA(2-) administration was observed, and analysis of variance also revealed no significant difference (p=0.94), in terms of enhancement, within this time interval. Pair-wise, post hoc testing also revealed no significant differences between 2.5 and 3, 3 and 3.5, 3.5 and 4, and 4 and 4.5 h post Gd-DTPA(2-) application. Our preliminary data therefore suggest that the time window suitable for a dGEMRIC (delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage)-like T(1) mapping of the menisci is relatively short, and lies between 2.5 and 4.5 h after Gd-DTPA(2-) injection.

Functional imaging in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: correlation of PET/CT and diffusion-weighted imaging at 3 Tesla

PURPOSE

The purposes of this study were: (a) to prospectively assess the correlation between apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (SCC); and (b) to assess ADC and SUVmax values in relation to different tumour grades and stages in our patient population.

METHODS

The study group comprised 31 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who were examined using a 3T MRI scanner with a 16-channel head and neck coil. In addition to routine sequences, axial (DWIBS) and sagittal (DW-EPI) diffusion-weighted sequences were obtained using b-values of 0 mm(2)/s and 800 mm(2)/s. The ADC maps were calculated automatically. The ADC values of the tumours were measured with three regions of interest (ROIs) of standard size, and an ROI covering the entire tumour. In all patients, contrast-enhanced, whole-body (18)F-FDG PET/CT was performed within 2 weeks of the MRI examination. SUVmax was measured for every tumour using a 3-D freehand ROI that covered the entire tumour. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for group comparisons. The Spearman rank correlation test was performed for ADC values.

RESULTS

Mean ADC values in the 31 SCC were 0.902 (± 0.134) with a ROI of standard size, and 0.928 (± 0.160) with the large ROI measurements on the axial DWIBS sequence. The ADC values of the tumours were significantly higher when measured with the sagittal DW-EPI sequence: 1.051 (± 0.211) and 1.082 (± 0.208). We observed no significant differences in ADC values and SUVmax between the various T stages or histological grades of the tumours. SUVmax values (26.5 ± 12) did not correlate with ADC values on DWIBS or EPI.

CONCLUSION

There is no correlation between the FDG uptake and the ADC value in head and neck SCC. The three different tumour grades and four tumour stages present in our study population could not be differentiated based on ADC values or SUV.

Texture-based classification of focal liver lesions on MRI at 3.0 Tesla: a feasibility study in cysts and hemangiomas

PURPOSE

To determine the feasibility of texture analysis for the classification of liver cysts and hemangiomas, on nonenhanced, zero-fill interpolated T1- and T2-weighted MR images.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Forty-five patients (26 women and 19 men; mean age, 58.1 +/- 16.9 years) with liver cysts or hemangiomas were enrolled in the study. After exclusion of images with artifacts, T1-weighted images of 42 patients, and T2-weighted images of 39 patients, obtained at 3.0 Tesla (T), were available for further analysis. Texture features derived from the gray-level histogram, co-occurrence and run-length matrix, gradient, autoregressive model, and wavelet transform were calculated. Fisher, probability of classification error and average correlation (POE+ACC), and mutual information coefficients were used to extract subsets of optimized texture features. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in combination with k nearest neighbor (k-NN) classification, and k-means clustering, were used for lesion classification.

RESULTS

LDA/k-NN produced misclassification rates of 16-18% on T1-weighted, and 12-18% on T2-weighted images. K-means clustering yielded misclassification rates of 15-23% on T1-weighted, and 15-25% on T2-weighted images.

CONCLUSION

Texture-based classification of liver cysts and hemangiomas is feasible on zero-fill interpolated MR images obtained at 3.0T. Further studies are warranted to investigate the value of texture-based classification of other liver lesions, such as hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma, on MRI.

23Na MR imaging at 7 T after knee matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation preliminary results

PURPOSE

To evaluate the feasibility of sodium 7-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in repaired tissue and native cartilage of patients after matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) and compare results with delayed gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) at 3 T.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ethical approval was provided by the local ethics committee; written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Six women and six men (mean age, 32.8 year ± 8.2 [standard deviation] and 32.3 years ± 12.7, respectively) were included. Mean time between MACT and MR was 56 months ± 28. A variable three-dimensional (3D) gradient-echo (GRE) dual-flip-angle technique was used for T1 mapping before and after contrast agent administration at 3 T. All patients were also examined at 7 T (mean delay, 70.5 days ± 80.1). A sodium 23-only transmit-receive knee coil was used with the 3D GRE sequence. A statistical analysis of variance and Pearson correlation were applied.

RESULTS

Mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was 24 in native cartilage and was 16 in transplants (P < .001). Mean sodium signal intensities normalized with the reference sample were 174 ± 53 and 267 ± 42 for repaired tissue in the cartilage transplant and healthy cartilage, respectively (P < .001). Mean postcontrast T1 values were 510 msec ± 195 and 756 msec ± 188 for repaired tissue and healthy cartilage, respectively (P = .005). Mean score of MR observation of cartilage repair tissue was 75 ± 14. Association between postcontrast T1 and normalized sodium signal values showed a high Pearson correlation coefficient (R) of 0.706 (P = .001). A high correlation of R = 0.836 (P = .001) was found between ratios of normalized sodium values and ratios of T1 postcontrast values.

CONCLUSION

With the modified 3D GRE sequence at 7 T, a sufficiently high SNR in sodium images was achieved, allowing for differentiation of repaired tissue from native cartilage after MACT. A strong correlation was found between sodium imaging and dGEMRIC in patients after MACT.
