Abstract
Grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) has been used to structurally characterize model hard and soft gratings of nanotechnological interest. The different gratings exhibit GISAXS patterns with characteristic features that can be associated with their level of order along the direction of periodicity and the length of the lines. Highly ordered gratings, made out of silicon by electron beam lithography, and those nanofabricated on spin-coated polymer films by nanoimprint lithography, exhibit characteristic semicircle-like GISAXS patterns with intensity spots periodically distributed on a semicircle whose radius is related to the incidence angle used. These gratings can be considered as one-dimensional crystalline lattices as provided by computer simulations. Less ordered polymer gratings prepared by the laser-induced periodic surface structuring method exhibit a GISAXS pattern characterized by periodic rod-like scattering maxima whose intensity decreases with increasing horizontal scattering angle. In this case the gratings can be considered as one-dimensional paracrystals. The transition from a rod-like to a semicircle-like GISAXS pattern has been simulated and attributed to the contribution of the form factor by changing the length of the line (ripple). A critical length value for the transition is located at around a few micrometres.

Abstract
A multiblock bioresorbable copolyester, poly(butylene/diethylene glycol succinate), was synthesized by reactive blending, and it was used, together with the corresponding poly(butylene succinate) homopolymer, to form films and to fabricate biomimetic electrospun scaffolds. The poly(butylene/diethylene glycol succinate) scaffold had a more pronounced elastomeric behavior than poly(butylene succinate). It also underwent hydrolytic degradation faster than poly(butylene succinate) since the incorporated diethylene glycol succinate units rendered the copolymer more hydrophilic than poly(butylene succinate). The films degraded faster than electrospun samples due to the autocatalytic effect of carboxylic end-groups. The biodegradable poly(butylene/diethylene glycol succinate) scaffold supported the growth and preserved the cardiac phenotype markers of H9c2 cells, demonstrating its potential utility in soft tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
AbstractSeveral novel ether or thioether linkage containing aliphatic polyesters and poly(alkylene dicarboxylate)s for comparison were synthesized and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The thermal behavior was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. All the polymers showed a good thermal stability, even though lower for the ether or thioether linkage-containing polyesters. The decrement of the thermal stability appears to be more relevant in the case of presence of sulphur atoms. At room temperature the samples appeared semicrystalline, except PTTDG and PDEDG, which were viscous oils; the effect of the introduction of ether or thioether group was an increment of the Tg value, a decrement of the melting temperature and a significant decrease of the crystallization rate. The entity of the variations was found to be affected by the kind of group introduced, and the trend observed can be explained on the basis of atom electronegativity and dimensions.

Abstract
Thin films (5-500 nm thick) of the linear aliphatic polyester (3,7) poly(propylene azelate) (PPAz) were prepared by spin-coating of CHCl(3) polymer solutions with different polymer concentrations. The morphology and structure of the spin-coated thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) techniques. AFM revealed the continuous nature of the flat, spherulitic films which are stable against dewetting even for polymer coatings as thin as 15 nm. GIWAXS patterns revealed a high crystal orientation of the films. A sharp reflection on the meridian whose spacing is related to the polymer chain unit length (c-axis) supports the presence of flat-on lamellae morphology in the whole range of film thicknesses investigated. The flat-on lamellae morphology is also supported by AFM images. A triclinic unit cell with the c*-axis perpendicular to the substrate is proposed for PPAz. The repulsion of the long aliphatic spacer by the Si-substrate is invoked as the main reason for the flat-on morphology observed.

Abstract
Thin films, with thicknesses from 10 to 400 nm of linear aliphatic polyesters (X, Y), based on propylenediol (X = 3) and on dicarboxylic acid of different chain length (Y = 2, 3, and 4 CH(2) units) were prepared by spin coating of CHCl(3) polymer solutions with different polymer concentrations. Morphology and structure of the spin coated thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by grazing incidence X-ray scattering techniques at small, (GISAXS) and wide angles (GIWAXS). AFM revealed a strong dewetting for all three polymers for coatings thinner than 100 nm. The polymer films are clearly semicrystalline for thicknesses higher than 50 nm. GIWAXS of the thicker films revealed their oriented crystalline nature. An edge-on-lamellae morphology is clearly shown by the AFM-phase images even for relatively thin films. SAXS with the beam parallel to the sample plane also support the presence of lamellae perpendicular to the substrate. The use of a mu-beam helped to interpret the GIWAXS patterns and allowed to obtain oriented WAXS patterns from melt solidified filaments. Thus, a crystal chain packing is proposed for the three polymers and consequently the indexing of the observed reflections. Accordingly, the polymer chains lie parallel to the substrate being the bc plane of the monoclinic crystal unit cell parallel to the substrate.

Abstract
The Authors describe a rare case of cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma in an acral location together with a brief literature review. A 62-year-old male presented with a slow-growing asymptomatic nodule, 2.2 cm in diameter, located in the subcutaneous tissue of the left calf. Ten months after surgical excision, the patient is alive and free of disease. Histologically, the lesion was well-circumscribed and contained three components: areas of mature fat tissue were intermingled with cellular areas of spindle eosinophilic cells, reminiscent of smooth muscle cells, and a complex mixture of vessels of different types and sizes. Immunohistochemically, the cellular spindle component was positive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, and negative for S-100, HMB-45, MART-1 and oestrogen and progesterone receptors. The Authors discuss differential diagnosis with other benign lesions such as angioleiomyoma and subcutaneous angiomyolipoma.

Abstract
AbstractA novel hyperbranched polyester was synthesized in bulk from 2,2- bis(hydroxymethyl)butyric acid and two different core molecules (1,1,1-tris- (hydroxylmethyl)propane and 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl)cyanuric acid), using ptoluensolfonic acid, scandium trifluoromethanesulfonate, titanium tetrabutoxide and dibutyltin oxide as catalysts and varied reaction temperature and time. At room temperature the samples obtained appeared as glassy, slightly yellow solids, with Mn (calculated by 1H-NMR spectra) in the range 500 - 2000. The degree of branching of the polyesters was determined by 13C-NMR spectroscopy and was found in the range 0.32 - 0.53. The introduction of the monomer in various steps seems to influence slightly the degree of branching, but has no effect on the molecular weight of these polymers. The polyesters exhibited a good thermal stability, as revealed by TGA technique, and the glass transition temperature, determined by DSC, was found to depend on the molecular weight and the kind of catalyst employed.

Abstract
Dielectric spectra of the polyester poly(propylene succinate) were measured upon crystallization. For this model aliphatic polyester the alpha and beta relaxations appear simultaneously and are well resolved in the experimental frequency window. During isothermal crystallization, this fact allows one to use the beta relaxation to characterize the crystalline structural development while the alpha relaxation provides information about the evolution of the amorphous phase dynamics. In this way structure development and dynamics evolution can be characterized by a single experiment during the crystallization process. The unambiguous analysis of the dielectric loss clearly supports the existence of precursors of crystallization in the induction period.
