Abstract
Bulk rutile RuO_{2} has long been considered a Pauli paramagnet. Here we report that RuO_{2} exhibits a hitherto undetected lattice distortion below approximately 900 K. The distortion is accompanied by antiferromagnetic order up to at least 300 K with a small room temperature magnetic moment of approximately 0.05μ_{B} as evidenced by polarized neutron diffraction. Density functional theory plus U (DFT+U) calculations indicate that antiferromagnetism is favored even for small values of the Hubbard U of the order of 1 eV. The antiferromagnetism may be traced to a Fermi surface instability, lifting the band degeneracy imposed by the rutile crystal field. The combination of high Néel temperature and small itinerant moments make RuO_{2} unique among ruthenate compounds and among oxide materials in general.

Abstract
Background: Serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been suggested to be involved in the process of coronary heart disease (CHD) and to be potential markers and/or predictors of CHD. Remnant-like lipoprotein particles (RLPs), which are regarded as atherogenic remnant lipoprotein, are reported to be increased in type 2 diabetic patients. We assessed the association of CHD with SAA, CRP and RLP-cholesterol in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: One hundred and twenty-six diabetic patients without CHD and 41 patients with CHD were recruited from our hospital. Plasma SAA was measured by the latex agglutination nephelometric immunoassay. Plasma high-sensitivity CRP was measured by a latex immunoturbidity method. Plasma RLP-cholesterol was measured by an immunoabsorption enzyme method. Results: The mean standard deviation values of RLP-cholesterol in patients with and without CHD were 0.22 (0.26) mmol/L and 0.15 (0.10) mmol/L, respectively ( P <0.05). Median (interquartile ranges) for SAA in patients with and without CHD were 7.4 (4.2-11.2) mg/L and 3.9 (2.2-5.9) mg/L, respectively ( P <0.001). Median (interquartile ranges) for CRP in patients with and without CHD was 1.14 (0.45-2.08) mg/L and 0.43 (0.19-1.25) mg/L, respectively ( P <0.001). For all patients, the Spearman rank correlation statistics for RLP-cholesterol compared with SAA and with CRP were 0.213 ( P <0.05) and 0.301 ( P <0.01), respectively. Conclusion: These data suggest that SAA, CRP and RLP-cholesterol are increased in type 2 diabetic patients with CHD, and that the inflammatory proteins correlate with remnant lipoprotein.

Abstract
The correlation between magnetic and dielectric properties has been investigated for the single crystal of the chiral triangular-lattice helimagnet MnSb_{2}O_{6}. We found that the spin-spiral plane in the ground state has a considerable tilting from the (110) plane and that the sign of the spin-spiral tilting angle is coupled to the clockwise or counterclockwise manner of spin rotation and accordingly to the sign of magnetically induced electric polarization. This leads to unique magnetoelectric responses such as the magnetic-field-induced selection of a single ferroelectric domain as well as the reversal of electric polarization just by a slight tilting of the magnetic field direction, where the chiral nature of the crystal structure plays a crucial role through the coupling of the chirality between the crystal and magnetic structures. Our results demonstrate that crystallographic chirality can be an abundant source of novel magnetoelectric functions with coupled internal degrees of freedom.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although neuroimaging plays an important role in the diagnosis of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus, its predictive value for response to shunt surgery has not been established. The purpose of the current study was to identify neuroimaging markers that predict the shunt response of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus underwent presurgical brain MR imaging and clinical evaluation before and 1 year after shunt surgery. The assessed MR imaging features included the Evans index, high-convexity tightness, Sylvian fissure dilation, callosal angle, focal enlargement of the cortical sulci, bumps in the lateral ventricular roof, and deep white matter and periventricular hyperintensities. The idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus grading scale total score was used as a primary clinical outcome measure. We used measures for individual symptoms (ie, the idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus grading scale subdomain scores, such as gait, cognitive, and urinary scores), the Timed Up and Go test, and the Mini-Mental State Examination as secondary clinical outcome measures. The relationships between presurgical neuroimaging features and postoperative clinical changes were investigated by using simple linear regression analysis. To identify the set of presurgical MR imaging features that best predict surgical outcomes, we performed multiple linear regression analysis by using a bidirectional stepwise method. RESULTS Simple linear regression analyses demonstrated that presurgical high-convexity tightness, callosal angle, and Sylvian fissure dilation were significantly associated with the 1-year changes in the clinical symptoms. A multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that presurgical high-convexity tightness alone predicted the improvement of the clinical symptoms 1 year after surgery. CONCLUSIONS High-convexity tightness is a neuroimaging feature predictive of shunt response in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Abstract
A natural sulphated mucopolysaccharide (OKU40), extracted from a marine plant Dinoflagellata, and an artificial sulphated polysaccharide (OKU41), prepared from a marine Pseudomonas, displayed antiviral activities against several enveloped viruses. OKU40 and OKU41 were found to be homogenous in electrophoresis and sedimation velocity and had a molecular weight of 8.0 × 1065.0 × 105respectively. The sulphation rate of OKU40 and OKU41 was 8.9% and 5.4%, respectively. Each OKU40 and OKU41 inhibited the cytopathic effect of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), type 2 (HIV-2) and zidovudineresistant HIV-1 in MT-4 cells at similar concentrations to those of dextran sulphate (molecular weight: 5000) (50% inhibitory concentrations: 0.86-1.95 μg mL−1), whereas these compounds did not affect the growth and viability of mock-infected MT-4 cells at concentrations up to 500 μg mL−1. These compounds proved inhibitory not only to HIV-1 and HIV-2 but also to other enveloped viruses, i.e. herpes simplex virus type 1, influenza virus A and B, respiratory syncytial virus and measles virus. OKU40 and OKU41 suppressed syncytium formation induced by cocultivation of MOLT-4/IIIb and MOLT-4 cells at concentrations higher than 20 μg mL−1. Although OKU41 inhibited the binding of HIV-1 to the host cells and the binding of anti-gp120 monoclonal antibody to HIV-1 gp120, OKU40 did not inhibit these bindings, suggesting that the mechanism of anti-HIV activity of OKU40 and OKU41 may be primarily due to the inhibition of virus-cell fusion and viral adsorption to the host cells, respectively. Furthermore, these compounds did not inhibit to the blood coagulation process at a concentration that was significantly inhibitory to HIV replication. The compounds appear to have an interesting potential as virucidal agents.

Abstract
Cloning, sequencing and molecular characterisation of a cryptic plasmid, pUPTC237, from a urease-positive thermophilic Campylobacter (UPTC) isolate obtained from the natural environment in Northern Ireland is reported in this study. Based on the determined DNA sequence, the pUPTC237 DNA was identified as a circular molecule of 3828 bp with a G+C content of 29.5%. As with other plasmid DNAs from Gram-negative bacteria, pUPTC237 contained an A+T-rich region (A+T content: 95%), followed by multiple direct tandem repeat units of 22 bp, characteristic of a replication origin and iteron sequence. A possible open reading frame (ORF)-1 was located upstream of the A+T-rich region and the iteron sequence that encoded a 460 amino acid protein similar to the mobilisation (mob) protein and two putative promoter structure sequences at the -35 and -10 regions and a possible ribosome binding site occurred upstream of the start codon for the ORF-1. Moreover, three possible ORFs (a short ORF-2 encoding 26 amino acids, similar to repA; an ORF-3 encoding 341 amino acids, similar to repB; and an ORF-4 encoding 96 amino acids with unknown function) were also identified. There are also two putative promoter structures for these three ORFs at the -35 and -10 regions upstream of the possible ORF-2. A possible transcription termination region was identified downstream of ORF-4. Northern blot hybridisation analysis suggested that these four ORFs constitute an operon and generate a messenger RNA (mRNA) transcript.

Abstract
An essential step toward elucidating the mechanism of superconductivity is to determine the sign or phase of the superconducting order parameter, as it is closely related to the pairing interaction. In conventional superconductors, the electron-phonon interaction induces attraction between electrons near the Fermi energy and results in a sign-preserved s-wave pairing. For high-temperature superconductors, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors, prevalent weak coupling theories suggest that the electron pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations which lead to repulsive interactions, and therefore that a sign-reversed pairing with an s_{±} or d-wave symmetry is favored. Here, by using magnetic neutron scattering, a phase sensitive probe of the superconducting gap, we report the observation of a transition from the sign-reversed to sign-preserved Cooper-pairing symmetry with insignificant changes in T_{c} in the S-doped iron selenide superconductors K_{x}Fe_{2-y}(Se_{1-z}S_{z})_{2}. We show that a rather sharp magnetic resonant mode well below the superconducting gap (2Δ) in the undoped sample (z=0) is replaced by a broad hump structure above 2Δ under 50% S doping. These results cannot be readily explained by simple spin fluctuation-exchange pairing theories and, therefore, multiple pairing channels are required to describe superconductivity in this system. Our findings may also yield a simple explanation for the sometimes contradictory data on the sign of the superconducting order parameter in iron-based materials.

Abstract
Exaggerated activation of the renin-angiotensin system via tissue angiotensin II (Ang II) type 1 receptor (AT1R) signaling exerts detrimental effects on cardiovascular, renal and endocrine systems to provoke hypertension and related target organ damage. On the other hand, accumulated research evidence of both basic and clinical studies shows that physiological AT1R signaling also plays an indispensable role for the normal organ development such as the kidney and the maintenance of cardiovascular and renal homeostasis. Such functional diversity of AT1R signaling prompts us to seek a new strategy of selective modulation of AT1R signaling in pathophysiology. In the course of an investigational search for a means to functionally and selectively modulate AT1R signaling for that purpose, a molecule directly interacting with the carboxyl-terminal cytoplasmic domain of AT1R was identified by employing yeast two-hybrid screening of a mouse kidney cDNA library and named AT1R-associated protein (ATRAP). The results of functional analysis showed that ATRAP promotes constitutive AT1R internalization in cultured cells and inhibits Ang II-mediated pathological response in mouse distal convoluted cells. The ATRAP is expressed in a variety of tissues including the kidney where ATRAP is abundantly distributed in epithelial cells along the renal tubules. The results employing genetic engineered mice with modified ATRAP expression showed that ATRAP plays a key role in the regulation of renal sodium handling and the modulation of blood pressure in response to pathological stimuli such as chronic Ang II infusion, and suggest ATRAP to be a target of interest.

Abstract
We present single-crystal neutron scattering measurements of the spin-1/2 equilateral triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ba_{3}CoSb_{2}O_{9}. Besides confirming that the Co^{2+} magnetic moments lie in the ab plane for zero magnetic field and then determining all the exchange parameters of the minimal quasi-2D spin Hamiltonian, we provide conclusive experimental evidence of magnon decay through observation of intrinsic line broadening. Through detailed comparisons with the linear and nonlinear spin-wave theories, we also point out that the large-S approximation, which is conventionally employed to predict magnon decay in noncollinear magnets, is inadequate to explain our experimental observation. Thus, our results call for a new theoretical framework for describing excitation spectra in low-dimensional frustrated magnets under strong quantum effects.

Abstract
Strain, magnetization, dielectric relaxation, and unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction measurements were performed to study the magnetic and structural properties of spinel Co_{1-x}V_{2+x}O_{4}. The strain measurement indicates that, upon cooling, ΔL/L in the order of ∼10^{-4} starts increasing below T_{C}, becomes maximum at T_{max}, and then decreases and changes its sign at T^{*}. Neutron measurements indicate that a collinear ferrimagnetic order develops below T_{C} and upon further cooling noncollinear ferrimagnetic ordering occurs below T_{max}. At low temperatures, the dielectric constant exhibits a frequency dependence, indicating slow dynamics. These results indicate the existence of an orbital glassy state at low temperatures in this nearly metallic frustrated magnet.

Abstract
The detrimental influence of oxygen on the performance and reliability of V/III nitride based devices is well known. However, the influence of oxygen on the nature of the incorporation of other co-dopants, such as rare earth ions, has been largely overlooked in GaN. Here, we report the first comprehensive study of the critical role that oxygen has on Eu in GaN, as well as atomic scale observation of diffusion and local concentration of both atoms in the crystal lattice. We find that oxygen plays an integral role in the location, stability, and local defect structure around the Eu ions that were doped into the GaN host. Although the availability of oxygen is essential for these properties, it renders the material incompatible with GaN-based devices. However, the utilization of the normally occurring oxygen in GaN is promoted through structural manipulation, reducing its concentration by 2 orders of magnitude, while maintaining both the material quality and the favorable optical properties of the Eu ions. These findings open the way for full integration of RE dopants for optoelectronic functionalities in the existing GaN platform.

Abstract
Transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressants are at a high risk of cancer, especially skin cancer. Trichilemmal carcinoma is comparatively rare compared with other skin cancers. We report here a first case of trichilemmal carcinoma arising in a kidney transplant recipient. A 63-year-old man who had undergone a living donor renal transplantation at the age of 50 years presented with a 15 × 10 mm lesion on his forehead. The pathological diagnosis after resection was trichilemmal carcinoma. Distant metastases involving the lymph nodes, lung, and liver occurred, and the patient died. Given that trichilemmal carcinoma generally has an indolent clinical course and a low metastatic potential, the present case of trichilemmal carcinoma with an aggressive course resulting in distant metastases is rare.

Abstract
We administered AT III concentrates to 21 patients with DIC who failed to respond initially to heparin therapy. About 60% of these 21 patients were effectively treated with AT III concentrates by enhancing the effect of heparin and alleviating the burden of excessive plasma transfusions on the cardiovascular system.
