Abstract
OBJECTIVES A few studies have revealed the impact of neighborhood social capital on oral health among young people. We sought to examine the associations of social capital in three settings (families, neighborhoods, and schools) with self-rated oral health among a sample of college students in Japan. METHODS Cross-sectional survey of 967 students in Okayama University, aged 18 and 19 years, was carried out. Logistic regression was used to examine the associations of poor self-rated oral health with perceptions of social capital, adjusting for self-perceived household income category and oral health behaviors. RESULTS The prevalence of subjects with poor self-rated oral health was 22%. Adjusted for gender, self-perceived household income category, dental fear, toothbrush frequency, and dental floss use, poor self-rated oral health was significantly associated with lower level of neighborhood trust [odds ratio (OR) 2.22; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.40-3.54] and lower level of vertical trust in school (OR 1.71; 95% CI: 1.05-2.80). Low informal social control was unexpectedly associated with better oral health (OR 0.54; 95% CI: 0.34-0.85). CONCLUSIONS The association of social capital with self-rated oral health is not uniform. Higher trust is associated with better oral health, whereas higher informal control in the community is associated with worse oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Being overweight is a risk factor for periodontitis. Unhealthy eating habits, which can induce overweight, may be involved in the development of periodontitis in young people. The present study aims to examine the relationships among overweight, eating habits, and the periodontal condition in Japanese university students. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 801 university students (413 males and 388 females; age range: 18 to 25 years). Patients were classified as underweight (body mass index [BMI] <18.5 kg/m(2)), normal weight (BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 kg/m²), and overweight (BMI ≥ 23 kg/m²). Students completed a questionnaire including items related to eating habits and underwent oral health examinations. Patients with a community periodontal index (CPI) of 0 to 2 were considered controls, and patients with a CPI >2 were considered to have periodontitis. RESULTS The prevalence of underweight, normal weight, and overweight patients was 21%, 62%, and 17%, respectively. In overweight patients, the periodontitis risk was increased by the frequent consumption of fatty foods (adjusted odds ratio: 2.3; 95% confidence interval: 1.1 to 5.2; P <0.05) and reduced by the frequent consumption of vegetables (adjusted odds ratio: 0.2; 95% confidence interval: 0.1 to 0.7; P <0.01). In underweight and normal-weight groups, eating habits did not differ significantly according to the presence of periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS In overweight students, the frequent consumption of fatty foods and infrequent consumption of vegetables were associated with an increased risk of periodontitis. In underweight and normal-weight students, eating habits had little effect on the periodontal condition.

Abstract
Identifying risk factors is important to prevent a wide range of health-damaging behaviours and to improve the quality of life of young people. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between impacts on daily performance attributed to malocclusion and psychological stress in healthy young Japanese adults. Medical and oral health data were collected during a cross-sectional examination conducted by the Health Service Center of Okayama University. Systemically healthy non-smoking students aged 18 and 19 years (n = 641; 329 males and 312 females) were included. Malocclusion was defined using a modified version of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). The impacts on daily performance attributed to malocclusion and psychological stress were assessed using self-reported questionnaires, the condition-specific oral impacts on daily performances (CS-OIDP), and the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist. Mann-Whitney U- and chi-square tests and structural equation modelling (SEM) were used for statistical analysis. Forty per cent of subjects had a malocclusion (n = 255). Subjects with impacts on daily performance had a significantly higher prevalence of malocclusion than those without impacts (P < 0.001). SEM showed that psychological stress, especially interpersonal sensitivity and depression, was significantly correlated with CS-OIDP and malocclusion. Negative impacts on daily performance attributed to malocclusion may contribute to psychological stress in young Japanese adults.

Abstract
A case of sarcomatoid collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) of kidney is presented, in which the diagnosis was made cytologically with voided urine and renal pelvis lavage. Cytology of hemorrhagic voided urine revealed highly atypical adenocarcinoma cells with reminiscent ductal structure, which suggested CDC as the most likely diagnosis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a left renal tumor, and selective lavage of left renal pelvis yielded spindle-shaped, highly atypical cells that indicated sarcomatoid carcinoma. The diagnosis of renal cancer with urine cytology is challenging because of small number of tumor cells in the urine, which are often associated with degeneration. As the urinary cytologic findings of sarcomatoid CDC have not been reported, the characteristic cytologic findings of sarcomatoid CDC are described in detail, and the differential diagnoses with diagnostic pitfalls were discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess sympathetic and parasympathetic modulation of heart rate. Chronic stress relates to reduced HRV. Malocclusion has effects on quality of life, which can lead to chronic stress. Therefore, we hypothesized that malocclusion, as chronic stress, may contribute to reduced HRV. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between malocclusion and HRV indices in healthy young adults. METHODS Thirty-seven non-smoking healthy subjects, aged 22 to 25 years, were examined. Malocclusion was defined by Angle classification. HRV indices included root mean square of successive differences, low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) and ratio of LF to HF. The effects of malocclusion on quality of life and mental health were assessed using self-reported questionnaires, the condition-specific Oral Impacts on Daily Performances index (CS-OIDP) and the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist (HSCL), respectively. RESULTS Significantly lower score of HF and higher heart rate (HR) level and CS-OIDP score were observed in subjects with malocclusion (n = 17) compared to those in the control subjects (n = 20) ( P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between HR and score of "anxiety" in HSCL ( P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The data showed an association between malocclusion and lower HRV. Based on our results, orthodontic treatment might contribute not only to improvement of oral esthetic and functional problems but also to improvement of stress and HRV indices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many epidemiologic surveys have shown that gingivitis is more prevalent in males than in females, few studies have clearly explained what causes this difference. The objective of the present study is to explain the sex difference in gingivitis based on the interaction between oral health behaviors and related factors, such as knowledge, attitude, and lifestyle, in young people. METHODS The study was comprised of 838 subjects (440 males and 398 females), aged 18 and 19 years. Gingivitis was assessed by the percentage of bleeding on probing (%BOP). Additional information was collected regarding oral hygiene status, oral health behaviors, and related factors. Structural equation modeling was used to test pathways from these factors to %BOP. Multiple-group modeling was also conducted to test for sex differences. RESULTS Females had greater knowledge, a more positive attitude, a healthier lifestyle, and higher level of oral health behaviors than males. There were significant differences in the paths (i.e., from lifestyle, knowledge, and attitude to %BOP) through oral health behaviors and oral health status. CONCLUSIONS Sex-based differences in gingivitis in young people can be explained by oral health behaviors and hygiene status, which are influenced by lifestyle, knowledge, and attitude. To prevent gingivitis, different approaches to males and females may be useful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity has been implicated as a risk factor for periodontitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In NAFLD, elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is associated with obesity. Although a possible interrelationship between liver function and periodontitis has been reported among the middle-aged population, the correlation in young adults is little known. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between ALT and the presence of periodontitis in university students in Japan. MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical and oral health data were collected in a cross-sectional examination conducted by the Health Service Center of Okayama University. Systemically healthy, non-smoking students aged 18 and 19 years old (n = 2225) were included. The protocol of the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was applied. Subjects with probing pocket depth >or= 4 mm were defined as having periodontitis. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between ALT, body mass index and periodontitis. RESULTS The number of subjects with periodontitis was 104 (4.7%). In males, having periodontitis was significantly associated with an increased level of ALT (>or= 41 IU/l) in logistic regression analysis (adjusted odds ratio 2.3; 95% confidence interval 1.0-5.2; p < 0.05). However, there was no significant association between periodontitis and ALT in female students. CONCLUSIONS Elevated ALT could be a potential risk indicator for periodontitis among young males. Monitoring hepatic abnormalities to prevent periodontitis must be better understood, even in the young adult population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report three cases of bilateral primary choroidal melanoma treated with bilateral plaque radiotherapy. METHODS Retrospective, single-center case series. RESULTS Case 1: In 1981, a 50-year-old man was diagnosed with a 5-mm-thick choroidal melanoma in the right eye (OD) and treated with plaque radiotherapy. In 1994, a 6.8-mm-thick choroidal melanoma in the left eye (OS) was treated with plaque radiotherapy. Final visual acuity was light perception OD and 20/20 OS at 24 years follow-up. Case 2: In 1983, a 53-year-old woman was diagnosed with a 3.5-mm-thick choroidal melanoma OS and treated with plaque radiotherapy. In 2001, an enlarging 2.5-mm-thick choroidal melanoma OD was treated with plaque radiotherapy. Final visual acuity was 20/30 OD and 20/20 OS at 22 years follow-up. Case 3: In 2001, a 92-year-old man was diagnosed with a 7.9-mm-thick choroidal melanoma OD treated with plaque radiotherapy. In 2003, an enlarging 2.8-mm-thick juxtapapillary choroidal melanoma was treated with plaque radiotherapy. Final visual acuity was 20/70 OD and 20/60 OS at 2.5 years follow-up. No patient showed ocular melanocytosis. Stable tumor regression was achieved in all six eyes. Metastatic disease did not develop in any case over 16 years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Monitoring of both eyes of patients with uveal melanoma is important for the remote possibility of melanoma in the second eye. In these three patients, plaque radiotherapy allowed for preservation of the globes and some vision.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In myocardial infarction and Chagas's disease, some physiopathological aspects are common: cardiomyocyte loss due to ischemia leads to a reduction of contractility and heart function. Different cells have been proposed for cellular cardiomioplasty. OBJECTIVE Our goal was to evaluate the method of co-culture of skeletal muscle (SM) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) for cell therapy of heart failure in Chagas's disease (CD) and myocardium postinfarction (MI). METHODS For MI, 39 rats completed the study at 1 month. Seventeen rats received cell therapy into the scar and 22 rats only medium. For CD, 15 rats completed the study at 1 month including 7 that received cell therapy and eight followed the natural evolution. All animals underwent ecocardiographic analysis at baseline and 1 month. Left ventricular, ejection fraction, end systolic, and end dyastolic volume were registered and analyzed by ANOVA. The co-culture method of SM and MSC was performed at 14 days (DMEM, with 15% FCS, 1% antibiotic, IGF-I, dexamethasone). Standard stain analysis was performed. RESULTS For MI ejection fraction in the animals that received the co-cultured cells increased from 23.52+/-8.67 to 31.45+/-8.87 (P=.006) versus the results in the control group: 26.68+/-6.92 to 22.32+/-6.94 (P=.004). For CD, ejection fraction in animals that received the co-cultured cells increased from 31.10+/-5.78 to 53.37+/-5.84 (P<.001) versus the control group values of 36.21+/-3.70 to 38.19+/-7.03 (P=0.426). Histopathological analysis of the animals receiving co-cultured cells demonstrated the presence of myogenesis and angiogenesis. CONCLUSION The results validated the product of SM and MSC co-cultures for treatment of diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cellular transplantation has emerged as a novel therapeutic option for treatment of ventricular dysfunction. Both skeletal myoblasts (SM) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been proposed as ideal cell for this aim. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of these cells in improving ventricular function and to evaluate the different histological findings in a rat model of severe post-infarct ventricular dysfunction. METHODS Myocardial infarction was induced in Wistar rats by left coronary occlusion. Animals with resulting ejection fraction (EF) lower than 40% were included. Heterologous SM were obtained by lower limb muscle biopsy and MSC by bone marrow aspiration. Nine days after infarction, rats received intramyocardial injection of SM (n=8), MSC (n=8) or culture medium, as control (n=11). Echocardiographic evaluation was performed at baseline and after 1 month. Histological evaluation was performed after HE and Gomori's trichrome staining and immunostainig against desmin, fast myosin and factor VIII. RESULTS There was no difference in baseline EF and left ventricular end diastolic (LVEDV) and systolic volume (LVESV) between all groups. After 1 month a decrease was observed in the EF in the control group (27.0+/-7.10% to 21.46+/-5.96%, p=0.005) while the EF markedly improved in SM group (22.66+/-7.29% to 29.40+/-7.01%, p=0.04) and remained unchanged in the MSC group (23.88+/-8.44% to 23.63+/-10.28%, p=0.94). Histopathology identified new muscular fibers in the group that received SM and new vessels and endothelial cells in the MSC. CONCLUSION Skeletal myoblasts transplantation resulted in myogenesis and improvement of ventricular function. In contrast, treatment with mesenchymal stem cells resulted in neoangiogenesis and no functional effect.

Abstract
Methods to permit more precise delineation of astrocytomas of different grades may have therapeutic utility. The authors selectively microdissected pure populations of cells from normal brain and astrocytomas. They performed two-dimensional protein gel electrophoresis (2DGE) followed by protein sequencing. Differential expression was confirmed immunohistochemically. 2DGE identified proteomic patterns and proteins that differentiated normal brain from tumor and distinguished astrocytomas of increasing grade.

Abstract
The inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum was investigated by the use of three different sonicators utilizing the squeeze-film effect, which may occur when ultrasound is irradiated into an extremely thin space and generate intensified pressure in the sample suspension. To expand from the small-scale horn-type sonicator to large-scale cylindrical or cleaning bath sonicators, the inactivation effectwas improved. In the case of the cylindrical sonicator (26.6 kHz, 30 W), 97% of the initial concentration of 2260 oocysts mL(-1) was inactivated at33 mL min(-1) (residence time of approximately 5.2 min). Hundreds of cubic meters of water can be treated per day at several kW using this sonicator. In addition, the simultaneous use of sonication and chlorination showed a beneficial effect on inactivation for C. parvum based on the evaluation of infectivity testing and morphological observation.

Abstract
Described is a patient with concurrent discrete gliomas: a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma with anaplastic features and an anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. The distinct and morphologically dissimilar tumors demonstrated similar genetic abnormalities by loss of heterozygosity and comparative genome hybridization. Clonality and proteomic analyses highlighted an independent origin for the two tumors. Proteomic methods may prove useful in cases where the differential diagnosis and pathogenetic origin of tumors are uncertain, as well as more globally for its ability to provide insight into specific expression of proteins that may serve as unique markers of tumorigenesis or as novel targets of therapy.

Abstract
The inactivation effects of ultrasonic irradiation at 27.5 kHz and chlorination using sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl) on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast cells) were investigated. In order to evaluate the effect of ultrasound on the growth of the yeast cells, calorimetric analysis was carried out in addition to colony counting. The heat evolution produced by the growth of yeast cells detected by calorimetry showed completely different patterns between sonication and chlorination. In case of sonication, the yeast cells were inactivated almost like a bactericidal effect, i.e. a quantitative change in cell number, at the beginning of sonication. It was similar to patterns obtained on simple dilution of yeast cells. In contrast, longer sonication increased the bacteriostatic effect, i.e. qualitative damage of the cell growth activity, together with the bactericidal effect. These results suggest that the cavitation caused by ultrasonic irradiation initially disrupted the cells located near the cavitation bubble which caused immediate cell death and the growth activity of the surviving cells was gradually damaged by further sonication. On the other hand, only a bacteriostatic effect was observed when the yeast cells were inactivated by chlorination.

Abstract
We have investigated the inactivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast cells) by ultrasonic irradiation. The amplitude on the vibration face contacting the sample solution was used as an indication of the ultrasonic power intensity. The effects of the amplitude on the vibration face and the initial cell numbers on the sonolytic inactivation of yeast cells have been investigated using a horn-type sonicator (27.5 kHz). The inactivation of the yeast cells by ultrasonic irradiation shows pseudo first-order behavior. The inactivation rate constant varied from 0.0007 to 0.145 s(-1) when the amplitude on the vibration face was in the range of 1-7 microm(p-p). The change in the inactivation rate constant as a function of the amplitude on the vibration face was similar to that of the OH radical formation rate under the same conditions. The threshold of this sonicator was 3 microm(p-p) with the amplitude on the vibration face. The initial cell numbers (from 10(2) to 10(5) mL(-1)) had an influence on the inactivation of the yeast cells by ultrasonic irradiation. The inactivation rate constants varied from 0.023 to 6.4 x 10(-3) s(-1), and the inactivation by ultrasonic irradiation was fastest at the lowest initial cell numbers. In a squeeze-film-type sonicator (26.6 kHz), 90% inactivation of the yeast cells was achieved by ultrasonic irradiation for 60 min.

Abstract
Ultrasonic inactivation of Escherichia coli XL1-Blue has been investigated by high-intensity ultrasonic waves from horn type sonicator (27.5 kHz) utilizing the "squeeze-film effect". The amplitude of the vibration face contacting the sample solution was used as an indication of the ultrasonic power intensity. The inactivation of the E. coli cells by ultrasonic irradiation shows pseudo first-order behavior. The inactivation rate constant gradually increased with increasing amplitude of the vibration face and showed rapid increase above 3 microm (p-p). In contrast, the H2O2 formation was not observed below 3 microm (p-p), indicating that the ultrasonic shock wave might be more important than indirect effect of OH radicals formed by ultrasonic cavitation in this system. The optimal thickness of the squeeze film was determined as 2 mm for the E. coli inactivation. More than 99% of E. coli cells was inactivated within 180-s sonication at the amplitude of 3 microm (p-p) and 2 mm of the thickness of the squeeze film.
