Abstract
Development of smart soft actuators is highly important for fundamental research and industrial applications but has proved to be extremely challenging. In this work, we present a facile, one-pot, one-step method to prepare dual-responsive bilayer hydrogels, consisting of a thermoresponsive poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAM) layer and a salt-responsive poly(3-(1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1 H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonate) (polyVBIPS) layer. Both polyNIPAM and polyVBIPS layers exhibit a completely opposite swelling/shrinking behavior, where polyNIPAM shrinks (swells) but polyVBIPS swells (shrinks) in salt solution (water) or at high (low) temperatures. By tuning NIPAM:VBIPS ratios, the resulting polyNIPAM/polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels enable us to achieve fast and large-amplitude bidirectional bending in response to temperatures, salt concentrations, and salt types. Such bidirectional bending, bending orientation, and degree can be reversibly, repeatedly, and precisely controlled by salt- or temperature-induced cooperative swelling-shrinking properties from both layers. Based on their fast, reversible, and bidirectional bending behavior, we further design two conceptual hybrid hydrogel actuators, serving as a six-arm gripper to capture, transport, and release an object and an electrical circuit switch to turn on-and-off a lamp. Different from the conventional two- or multistep methods for preparation of bilayer hydrogels, our simple, one-pot, one-step method and a new bilayer hydrogel system provide an innovative concept to explore new hydrogel-based actuators through combining different responsive materials that allow us to program different stimuli for soft and intelligent materials applications.

Abstract
Polymer dielectric film with a large dielectric constant, high energy density and enhanced thermal conductivity are of significance for the development of impulse capacitors. However, the fabrication of polymer dielectrics combining high energy density and thermal conductivity is still a challenge at the moment. Here we demonstrate the facile exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) in common organic solvents under sonication with the assistance of hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE). The noncovalent CH-π interactions between the nanosheets and HBPE ensure the dispersion of BNNSs in organic solvents with high concentrations, because of the highly branched chain structure of HBPE. Subsequently, the resultant BNNSs with a few defects are distributed uniformly in the poly(fluorovinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) nanocomposite films prepared via simple solution casting. The BNNS/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite exhibits outstanding dielectric properties, high energy density and high thermal conductivity. The dielectric constant of the 0.5 wt% nanocomposite film is 35.5 at 100 Hz with an energy density of 5.6 J cm-3 at 325 MV m-1 and a high charge-discharge efficiency of 79% due to the depression of the charge injection and chemical species ionization in a high field. Moreover, a thermal conductivity of 1.0 wt% nanocomposite film reaches 0.91 W·m-1 · K-1, which is 3.13 times higher than that of the fluoropolymer matrix. With dipole accumulation and orientation in the interfacial zone, lightweight, flexible BNNS/P(VDF-HFP) nanocomposite films with high charge-discharge performance and thermal conductivity, exhibit promising applications in relatively high-temperature electronics and energy storage devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are the main methods for treatment of neonatal seizures; however, a few AEDs may cause developing brain damage of neonate. This study aims to investigate effects of oxcarbazepine (OXC) on developing brain damage of neonatal rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Both of neonatal and adult rats were divided into 6 groups, including Control, OXC 187.5 mg/kg, OXC 281.25 mg/kg, OXC 375 mg/kg group, LEV and PHT group. Body weight and brain weight were evaluated. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Nissl staining were used to observe neurocyte morphology and Nissl bodies, respectively. Apoptosis was examined using TUNEL assay, and caspase 8 activity was evaluated using spectrophotometer method. Cytochrome C-release was evaluated using flow cytometry. Western blot was used to examine Bax and Bcl-2 expression. RESULTS OXC 375 mg/kg treatment significantly decreased brain weight compared to Control group in neonatal rats (P5 rats) (p<0.05). OXC administration causes histological changes of neurocytes. OXC 281.25 mg/kg or more concentration significantly decreased neurocytes counts and increased TUNEL-staining positive neurocytes compared to Control group (p<0.05). OXC 281.25 mg/kg and OXC 375 mg/kg significantly increased caspase 3 activity compared to Control group in P5 rats (p<0.05). OXC 281.25 mg/kg and OXC 375 mg/kg significantly increased Bax, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and cytochrome C release in frontal lobes compared to Control group in P5 rats (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Oxcarbazepine at a concentration of 281.25 mg/kg or more causes neurocyte apoptosis and developing brain damage by triggering Bax/Bcl-2 signaling pathway mediated caspase 3 activation in neonatal rats.

Abstract
Some polyzwitterionic brushes exhibit a strong "anti-polyelectrolyte effect" and ionic specificity that make them versatile platforms to build smart surfaces for many applications. However, the structure-property relationship of zwitterionic polymer brushes still remains to be elucidated. Herein, we aim to study the structure-dependent relationship between different zwitterionic polymers and the anti-polyelectrolyte effect. To this end, a series of polyzwitterionic brushes with different cationic moieties (e.g., imidazolium, ammonium, and pyridinium) in their monomeric units and with different carbon spacer lengths (e.g., CSL = 1, 3, and 4) between the cation and anion were designed and synthesized to form polymer brushes via the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. All zwitterionic brushes were carefully characterized for their surface morphologies, compositions, wettability, and film thicknesses by atomic force microscopy, contact angle measurement, and ellipsometry, respectively. The salt-responsiveness of all zwitterionic brushes to surface hydration and friction was further examined and compared both in water and in salt solutions with different salt concentrations and counterion types. The collective data showed that zwitterionic brushes with different cationic moieties and shorter CSLs in salt solution induced higher surface friction and lower surface hydration than those in water, exhibiting strong anti-polyelectrolyte effect salt-responsive behaviors. By tuning the CSLs, cationic moieties, and salt concentrations and types, the surface wettability can be changed from a highly hydrophobic surface (∼60°) to a highly hydrophilic surface (∼9°), while interfacial friction can be changed from ultrahigh friction (μ ≈ 4.5) to superior lubrication (μ ≈ 10-3). This work provides important structural insights into how subtle structural changes in zwitterionic polymers can yield great changes in the salt-responsive properties at the interface, which could be used for the development of smart surfaces for different applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although the frontolimbic cortex has been implicated in borderline personality disorder (BPD), information about possible asymmetries in this region in patients with BPD is limited. This study aimed to examine whether frontolimbic cortex asymmetries differ between patients with BPD and healthy individuals. METHODS The brains of 30 young adult patients with BPD and 32 healthy control subjects were scanned with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The participants completed self-report scales assessing impulsivity, affect intensity and other psychological variables. Gray matter volume, surface area, and cortical thickness in regions of interest (ROIs), namely anterior insula (AI) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) were determined and the data were probed for hemisphere-group interactions. RESULTS Relative to controls, patients with BPD had reduced cortical thickness in left ACC and less surface area and gray matter volume in left AI. Significant group-hemisphere interactions were observed for gray matter volume and surface area of AI and for cortical thickness of ACC. Post hoc analysis showed that the BPD patients had greater frontolimbic cortex asymmetry than healthy controls; furthermore, greater asymmetry of AI&ACC correlated with a higher score in attention subscale of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. CONCLUSION Patients with BPD have greater frontolimbic asymmetry than healthy individuals.

Abstract
To improve the mechanical strength and antipollution properties of membranes, this research presents a facile method to prepare crosslinked polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes. This was achieved firstly by radical copolymerization with acrylonitrile, allyl methacrylate and sulfobetaine methacrylamide. Then, the copolymer was crosslinked by a thiol-ene click reaction under UV irradiation. Finally, the crosslinked membranes were prepared by traditional immersion precipitation phase inversion. These prepared membranes showed excellent water-pressure resistance and solvent swelling, owing to their crosslinked structure. This research will help in preparing crosslinked membranes through facile crosslinking under mild reaction conditions. The betaine structure also considerably improved the antifouling properties of the membranes.

Abstract
Antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria killing and release functions show great promise in biological and biomedical applications, in particular for reusable medical devices. However, these surfaces either require a sophisticated technique to create delicate structures or need rigorous stimuli to trigger the functions, greatly limiting their practical application. In this study, we made a step forward by developing a simple system based on a salt-responsive polyzwitterionic brush. Specifically, the salt-responsive brush of poly(3-(dimethyl (4-vinylbenzyl) ammonium) propyl sulfonate) (polyDVBAPS) was endowed with bactericidal function by grafting an effective bactericide, i.e., triclosan (TCS). This simple functionalization successfully integrated the bacteria attach/release function of polyDVBAPS and bactericidal function of TCS. As a result, the surface could kill more than 95% attached bacteria and, subsequently, could rapidly detach ∼97% bacteria after gently shaking in 1.0 M NaCl for 10 min. More importantly, such high killing efficiency and release rate could be well retained (unchanged effectiveness of both killing and release after four severe killing/release cycles), indicating the highly efficient regeneration and long-term reusability of this system. This study not only contributes zwitterionic polymers by conferring new functions but also provides a new, highly efficient and reliable surface for "killing-release" antibacterial strategy.

Abstract
Development of stimuli-responsive, shape-transformable materials is fundamentally and practically important for smart actuators. Herein, we design and synthesize a bilayer hydrogel by assembling a polycationic (polyMETAC/HEAA) layer with polyelectrolyte effect and a polyzwitterionic (polyVBIPS) layer with antipolyelectrolyte effect together. The bilayer hydrogels adopt a pseudo-double-network structure, and both polyelectrolyte and polyzwitterionic layers have salt-responsive swelling and shrinkage properties, but in a completely opposite way. The resulting polyMETAC/HEAA-polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels exhibit bidirectional bending in response to salt solutions, salt concentrations, and counterion types. Such bidirectional bending of this bilayer hydrogel is fully reversible and triggered between salt solution and pure water multiple times. The bending orientation and degree of the bilayer hydrogel is driven by the opposite volume changes between the volume shrinking (swelling) of polyMETAC/HEAA layer and the volume swelling (shrinking) of polyVBIPS layer. Such cooperative, not competitive, salt-responsive swelling-shrinking properties of the two layers are contributed to by the polyelectrolyte and antipolyelectrolyte effects from the respective layers. Moreover, an eight-arm gripper made of this bilayer hydrogel is fabricated and demonstrates its ability to grasp an object in salt solution and release the object in water. This work provides a new shape-regulated, stimuli-responsive asymmetric hydrogel for actuator-based applications.

Abstract
An ultra-low-frequency platform leveling loop based on a mixed sensitivity H∞ approach, which considers both the system bandwidth and response speed, was designed and applied to a prototype, two-axis gyro-stabilized platform marine gravimeter CHZ-II. The instrument was developed for regional surveys in deep ocean areas where high-resolution gravity measurements with accuracy 1 mGal are required. Horizontal accelerations in the surge and sway directions are suppressed about 60 dB in the frequency range 0.05 to 0.5 Hz. This typically improves the quality of the gravity data before any processing corrections. The time required for stabilizing the platform at the beginning of a survey line or course change is about 3 min, which improves the data collection efficiency. In May 2015, the first test was conducted in open sea conditions aboard the Chinese State Oceanic Administration's R/V Xiangyanghong 10. Sixteen traverses were run in the South China Sea to evaluate the loop performance. Platform motion tracks and gravity data from the survey were of satisfactory quality. According to analyses of 16 sets of calculated errors, the root mean square repeatability of the pitch and roll off-level angles were less than 10 and 20 arc sec, respectively, with a horizontal acceleration of about 50 Gal. Errors derived from the inability of the platform to maintain perfect sensor leveling during the survey cruise were less than 0.3 mGal.

Abstract
Maximum-likelihood estimation of robust regression is employed to process absolute gravimeter data because this method is insensitive to outliers. Gravity values obtained by both ordinary least squares and different approaches for robust regression are compared with the results obtained by the g9 processing software for the FG5 gravimeter. The results show that the accuracy of gravity data can be improved by rejecting certain outliers via adjustments to a suitable weighting function of time-distance pairs. A convenient method of identifying those outliers by their weight is also presented.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is a common disease unique to pregnant women, and its development involves many genetics l factors. IL-4 is an important regulatory factor of the Th2 cellular immune response, and plays an important role in the induction of placental growth. In this study, we investigated the relationship between IL-4 C-590T, C+33T and G-1098T polymorphisms and risk of pre-eclampsia in a population of pregnant women. A case-control study of 196 pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and 257 healthy controls was conducted. Genotyping of IL-4 C-590T, C+33T and G-1098T was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. We observed that the TT genotype, compared to the CC genotype, of IL-4 C-590T harbored a lower risk of pre-eclampsia; adjusted OR (95%CI) was 0.29 (0.11-0.81). The CT+TT genotype, compared to the CC genotype, harbored a lower risk of pre-eclampsia (adjusted OR = 0.50, 95%CI = 0.30-0.84) in the dominant model. In the recessive model, the TT genotype, compared to the CC+CT genotype, harbored a lower risk of pre-eclampsia (adjusted OR = 0.31, 95%CI = 0.11-0.86). However, no significant correlation was observed between the IL-4 C+33T and G-1098T polymorphisms and risk of pre-eclampsia in three genetic models. In conclusion, IL-4 C-590T polymorphism could be used as a predictive risk factor for pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The pathogenesis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is not well understood. We examined the microstructure of white matter in patients with BPD. METHOD Treatment-naïve young adult with BPD (N = 30) and young-adult healthy controls (HCs; N = 31) were subjected diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Microstructural parameters were analyzed via tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and post hoc tractography. RESULTS TBSS analysis revealed that, relative to the HC group, the BPD group had significantly lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the genu and body of the corpus callosum (CC), right superior corona radiate, right anterior corona radiate, as well as higher radial diffusivity (RD) in the left anterior thalamic radiation. Tractography showed that FA values of fiber bundles passing through the fornix were significantly reduced in BPD group relative to HCs. No significant correlations were observed between clinical symptom and DTI indices in BPD group (FDR corrected). CONCLUSION Focal microstructural alterations were found in BPD group, mainly in the limbic system and CC. The present findings support the fronto-limbic disconnectivity hypothesis and suggest that abnormal maturation of white matter structures may play an important role in mechanism of BPD.
