Abstract
Wavelength spectra of Balmer-α light from plasmas in the extraction region of the Large Helical Device-R&D negative ion source, or the LHD one-third ion source have exhibited a blue shift as a negative bias voltage was applied to the plasma grid. The blue shift increased as the negative bias voltage with respect to the local plasma potential was increased. The measured spectra were compared with the velocity distributions of surface reflected hydrogen atoms calculated by atomic collisions in amorphous target code. The arc power and the source H2 pressure also affected the shift and broadening in the observed Balmer-α spectra. The possibility of identifying the negative hydrogen ions produced at the low work function plasma grid surface by high resolution spectroscopy is discussed.

Abstract
A 20 cm long 10 cm wide microwave plasma source was realized by inserting two 20 cm long 1.5 mm diameter rod antennas into the plasma. Plasma luminous distributions around the antennas were changed by magnetic field arrangement created by permanent magnets attached to the source. The distributions appeared homogeneous in one direction along the antenna when the spacing between the antenna and the source wall was 7.5 mm for the input microwave frequency of 2.45 GHz. Plasma density and temperature at a plane 20 cm downstream from the microwave shield were measured by a Langmuir probe array at 150 W microwave power input. The measured electron density and temperature varied over space from 3.0 × 10(9) cm(-3) to 5.8 × 10(9) cm(-3), and from 1.1 eV to 2.1 eV, respectively.

Abstract
A new type of laser ion source is being developed aiming at the production of positive and negative singly charged ions using a capillary graphite target structure. The initial results of the laser plasma produced inside of the 10 mm diameter conduit indicated the formation of the secondary charged particle production inside the target. A high speed camera clearly recorded the plasma plume expansion inside the target. The time-of-flight spectrum of the laser produced plasma in vacuum showed that the signal of the positive ions formed two peaks as the laser power density exceeded 10 GW/cm(2). The addition of neutral gas to the system produced a signal corresponding to negative ions after the positive signal.

Abstract
An ion source with a remote plasma chamber excited by a 13.56 MHz radio frequency power was used for low-energy broad ion beam extraction. Optical emission spectral analyses showed the sputtering and postionization of a liquid gallium (Ga) target placed in a chamber separated from the source bombarded by argon (Ar) plasma guided by a bent magnetic field. In addition, an E × B probe successfully showed the extraction of low-energy Ga and Ar ion beams using a dual-electrode extractor configuration. By introducing dilute amounts of nitrogen gas into the system, formation of thin Ga-based films on a silicon substrate was demonstrated as determined from X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity studies.

Abstract
Low-energy argon beams were extracted from a dual-chamber ion source system. The first chamber is a quartz cylinder where dense inductively coupled plasmas were produced using 13.56 MHz radio frequency (rf) power. The discharge was driven into an adjacent chamber which acts as a reservoir for ion beam extraction using a dual-electrode extractor configuration. Extraction of ions from the second chamber with energies in the 100 eV range was achieved while minimizing fluctuations induced by the rf signal. A custom-built retarding potential analyzer was used to analyze the effectiveness of ion beam transport using the remote plasma chamber. Well-defined beams were extracted between 60 and 100 V extraction potentials at 50-100 W rf powers. An increase in rf power resulted in an increase in average ion energy, increase in ion current density while the energy spread remains constant.

Abstract
Recent research results on negative-ion-rich plasmas in a large negative ion source have been reviewed. Spatial density and flow distributions of negative hydrogen ions (H(-)) and positive hydrogen ions together with those of electrons are investigated with a 4-pin probe and a photodetachment (PD) signal of a Langmuir probe. The PD signal is converted to local H(-) density from signal calibration to a scanning cavity ring down PD measurement. Introduction of Cs changes the slope of plasma potential local distribution depending upon the plasma grid bias. A higher electron density H2 plasma locally shields the bias potential and behaves like a metallic free electron gas. On the other hand, the bias and extraction electric fields penetrate in a Cs-seeded electronegative plasma even when the electron density is similar. Electrons are transported by the penetrated electric fields from the driver region along and across the filter and electron deflection magnetic fields. Plasma ions exhibited a completely different response against the penetration of electric fields.

Abstract
Dust particles of μm size produced by a monoplasmatron ion source are observed by a laser light scattering. The scattered light signal from an incident laser at 532 nm wavelength indicates when and where a particle passes through the ion beam transport region. As the result, dusts with the size more than 10 μm are found to be distributed in the center of the ion beam, while dusts with the size less than 10 μm size are distributed along the edge of the ion beam. Floating potential and electron temperature at beam transport region are measured by an electrostatic probe. This observation can be explained by a charge up model of the dust in the plasma boundary region.

Abstract
In 2010, Japan experienced a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) epidemic where 292 premises were infected over a period of 75 days. The epidemic was controlled by stamping-out and vaccination, applied 5 weeks after the first confirmation of disease within a 10 km radius of identified infected places. This study aimed at identifying the role of emergency vaccination to epidemic control while adjusting for the dynamic pattern of local spread, and assessing alternative vaccination strategies, using a disease simulation model. Our results indicate that the overall hazard of local spread remained high throughout the silent spread phase and the first two weeks post-detection, with significant reduction occurring from week 3 onwards. The estimated effectiveness of emergency vaccination quantified as reduction in the hazard of infection was at most 81% and 44% for cattle and pig farms, respectively. The vaccination strategy reduced the simulated median number of IPs by 22%, epidemic duration by 64% and culling duration by 52%, but increased the total number of infected or vaccinated premises subject to culling by 144% compared with no vaccination. The simulation indicated that vaccination starting 2 weeks earlier (3 weeks post-first detection) with a smaller vaccination radius (3 km) was more effective for eradication of the epidemic compared with the actually implemented strategy.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between initial stability and bone density in patients undergoing implant treatment. Twenty-five screw-type dental implants were inserted in 12 patients. All patients underwent multi-detector computed tomography (CT) examination prior to implant insertion. The implant sockets were prepared according to the drilling protocol, and peak insertion torque values were measured. CT values around the implants were measured using preoperatively scanned CT data, which were combined with actual implant positions. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to investigate the correlation between insertion torque values and CT values (in Hounsfield units, HU). Twenty-three implants (8 or 10 mm in length) were inserted in the mandibular molar region and two (10mm length) in the maxillary molar region. The mean CT value of the 8-mm implants was 508.6 ± 187.0 HU and mean insertion torque was 27.2 ± 12.1 N·cm; for the 10-mm implants, these values were 579.6 ± 224.3 HU and 28.1 ± 14.6 N·cm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between the insertion torque and mean CT values (r=0.699, 8 mm; r=0.771, 10 mm). The results revealed that bone density around the implant is a useful index. This study indicates that preoperative CT may enable the prediction of initial implant stability.

Abstract
AIM To discuss the chronological changes observed in a national survey of neonatal surgery in Japan performed every 5 years by the Committee in the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons. METHODS We analyzed the data obtained for 20 years from 1993 to 2013 and herein report the chronological changes. RESULTS The number of summarized cases was least in 1993, with 2806 cases, and subsequently increased to 3753 cases in 2013. The mortality rate among the patients with maternal transport linearly decreased (p = 0.0386). Although the proportion of extremely low birth weight infants linearly increased (p = 0.0014), with an annual rate of +0.39 %, the mortality rate linearly decreased (p = 0.0010), with an annual rate of -1.68 %. Moreover, the overall mortality rate linearly decreased (p = 0.0002), with an annual rate of -0.26 %. Most diseases were observed to exhibit a decline in the mortality rate with the same trend as overall mortality. The decline in the mortality rate was most robust with respect to congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The mortality rates, except for that of CDH, omphalocele, esophageal atresia, and intestinal perforation, declined to 5 % or lower by 2013. CONCLUSIONS The present findings may be the result of remarkable progress in perinatal management.

Abstract
We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_{LL}, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

Abstract
Trolox, a water-soluble vitamin E analogue has been used as a positive control in Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity and oxygen radical antioxidant capacity assays due to its high antioxidative effect. In this study, the ex vivo antioxidative effects of Trolox and its concentration in blood and brain microdialysates from rat after administration were evaluated by newly established semi-microflow injection analysis, chemiluminescence detection and HPLC-UV. In the administration test, the antioxidative effect of Trolox in blood and brain microdialysates after a single administration of 200 mg/kg of Trolox to rats could be monitored. The antioxidative effects in blood (12.0 ± 2.1) and brain (8.4 ± 2.1, × 10(3) antioxidative effect % × min) also increased. Additionally, the areas under the curve (AUC)s0-360 (n = 3) for blood and brain calculated with quantitative data were 10.5 ± 1.2 and 9.7 ± 2.5 mg/mL × min, respectively. This result indicates that Trolox transferability through the blood-brain barrier is high. The increase in the antioxidative effects caused by Trolox in the blood and brain could be confirmed because good correlations between concentration and antioxidative effects (r ≥ 0.702) were obtained. The fact that Trolox can produce an antioxidative effect in rat brain was clarified.

Abstract
A risk assessment study of seven phthalates in paper diapers for newborn babies produced in Japan was performed. The diapers were purchased and the contents of the seven phthalates were determined and estimated amounts of exposure were calculated based on the eluted rate into artificial medium of urine or sweat, average weight of infants, and frequency of use. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate were detected in the topsheets and determined to be 0.6 μg/g and 0.2 μg/g, respectively. The daily estimated exposure volume was calculated to be in the range of 1.86 × 10(-10)-2.98 × 10(-6) mg/kg/day as follows: content of seven phthalates in the topsheet (0.1-1 μg/g) × eluted rate of phthalates into artificial sweat (0.0006-2.4%) × weight of the topsheet of a diaper (1.5 g) × the number of diapers used per day (12 sheets) × skin absorption rate (0.005-0.1)/average body weight (2.9 kg). For hazard assessment, we used 0.2-300 mg/kg/day for the seven phthalates based on the data available at international agencies. The margin of exposure to the seven phthalates was 6.71 × 10(4)-1.99 × 10(11), indicating that the risk of exposure to phthalates from the diapers produced in Japan was negligible.

Abstract
More than half of the patients with glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome and renovascular hypertension showed obviously abnormal profiles of serum lipoproteins (Lps). The abnormal profiles returned to normal or near-normal when the disease was ameliorated or corrected surgically. A unique Lp profile (broad midband pattern, BMP) was observed in approximately 89% of uremic patients on hemodialysis therapy. The results of the current investigations indicated that the BMP could probably be formed by the accumulation of catabolic remnants of VLDL.

Abstract
The relationship between the lack of electromotive force in myocardial infarction and body surface potential distribution was investigated on maps reconstructed from a simulated heart model and transfer impedance vectors of human torso model. The heart model, a cluster of 3-mm cubic blocks, was stored in the memory of a computer. Transfer impedance vectors between 81 lead points on the human torso model and 392 positions covering ventricular areas in the torso were measure. Body surface potential values were calculated mathematically by summing up scalar products between the electromotive force of the heart model and the measured transfer impedance vectors. Thus, reconstructed maps changed in their patterns with the alternation in lacation and/or extent of infarcted region in the heart model. In particular, the appearance of the abnormal potential minimum, which projects the infarcted region in the heart model onto the torso surface, was characteristic in both transmural and subendocardial infarction. In addition, delayed activation in the intact layer of the epicardium overlying the infarcted region produced a potential maximum on the same place as the abnormal potential minimum appeared previously.

Abstract
A simple formula to calculate refocusing by locating the output slit at a specific distance away from the exit of 90° ion deflecting electric sector is given. Numerical analysis is also performed to calculate the ion beam trajectories for different values of the initial angular deviation of the beam. To validate the theory, a compact (90 mm × 5.5 mm × 32 mm) 90° sector ESA is fabricated which can fit through the inner diameter of a conflat 70 vacuum flange. Experimental results show that the dependence of resolution upon the distance between the sector exit and the Faraday cup agrees with the theory. The fabricated 90° sector electrostatic energy analyzer was then used to measure the space resolved ion energy distribution functions of an ion beam with the energy as low as 600 eV.

Abstract
We present ΛΛ correlation measurements in heavy-ion collisions for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV using the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The Lednický-Lyuboshitz analytical model has been used to fit the data to obtain a source size, a scattering length and an effective range. Implications of the measurement of the ΛΛ correlation function and interaction parameters for dihyperon searches are discussed.

Abstract
Sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs), homocysteine (Hcy), methionine (Met) and cysteine (Cys) in blood are related to homocystinuria, an inborn error of metabolism. In this study, an assay method with HPLC-fluorescence detection to quantify the SAAs in a dried blood spot was established and applied to samples from newborn babies (n=200). Sample pretreatment involving reduction, derivatization with 4-(N,N-dimethylaminosulfonyl)-7-fluoro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole, and liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate gave the separation of the derivatives with retention times within 12 min. The method was enough sensitive to determine the SAAs in a dried blood spot with 0.04-0.14 µm as the limit of detection at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. However, the absolute recoveries were very low (5.7% for Hcy, 4.6% for Cys) except for Met (105.4%) owing to inefficient recovery of Hcy and Cys from the blood matrix. Other validation parameters such as accuracy (93.5-106.2%) and intra- (≤ 9.0%) and inter-day precisions (≤ 8.7%) were acceptable. The reliability of a dried blood spot as an analytical sample was estimated. Furthermore, the proposed method was successfully applied to dried blood spots prepared from newborn babies.
