Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been no information about the concentration of 14,15-leukotriene C4, which is generated by 15- and 12-lipoxygenase and has been recently named eoxin C4, in biological fluids. OBJECTIVE To determine the clinical concentrations of eoxin C4 in various respiratory inflammatory diseases, we quantified eoxin C4 in relation to the concentrations of cysteinyl-leukotrienes (CysLTs) and 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). METHODS BALF fluid was obtained from patients with a number of inflammatory lung diseases. Eoxin C4 and CysLTs were quantified by enzyme immunoassay in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography. Eoxin C4 immunoassay does not detect eoxin D4 or eoxin E4. 15-HETE was quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using (18)O-labeled compounds as an internal standard. RESULTS The concentration of eoxin C4 (median 1.4, range <1.12-6.7 pg/mL) was significantly lower than that of eoxin C4 or CysLTs (P<0.0001). The concentration of 15-HETE significantly correlated with those of LTC4 and CysLTs or the number and the percentage of eosinophils in BALF. On the other hand, eoxin C4 concentration did not correlate with eosinophil number or CysLTs concentration in BALF. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study demonstrating the presence of eoxin C4 in human biological fluids. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the pathophysiological role of eoxin C4 in some respiratory inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The nature of the spin-density wave (SDW) and its relation with superconductivity are crucial issues in the newly discovered iron-pnictide superconductors. Particularly, it is unclear whether the superconducting phase and SDW are truly exclusive from each other. We here report splittings of the band structures in Sr1-xKxFe2As2 (x=0, 0.1, 0.18), and their unusual doping dependence. Our data on single crystalline samples prove that the SDW and superconductivity could coexist in iron pnictides.

Abstract
The magnetic properties in the parent compounds are often intimately related to the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity. Here we report the first direct measurements on the electronic structure of a parent compound of the newly discovered iron-based superconductor, BaFe2As2, which provides a foundation for further studies. We show that the energy of the spin density wave in BaFe2As2 is mainly lowered through exotic exchange splitting of the band structure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening syndrome resulting from the sudden release of mast cell- and basophil-derived mediators into the circulation. However, pathological evidence of the association between inflammatory mediators and human anaphylaxis is insufficient. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to better understand the relationship between in vivo production of inflammatory mediators and the pathogenesis of anaphylaxis. We also sought to evaluate mast cell activation in anaphylaxis. METHODS We measured the concentrations of various inflammatory mediators in urine samples, which were collected from 32 anaphylactic patients during the onset of anaphylaxis and during clinical remission, 21 patients with asthma on acute exacerbation and 15 healthy control subjects. Blood and urine specimens were collected from the patients after provocation test. Urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4), 9alpha, 11beta-prostaglandin F2 (9alpha, 11beta-PGF2), eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) and leukotriene B4 glucuronide (LTBG) concentrations were determined by enzyme immunoassay, and the activity of plasma platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase and serum tryptase concentration were measured using commercially available kits. RESULTS Significantly higher concentrations of urinary LTE4 and 9alpha, 11beta-PGF2, which immediately decreased during clinical remission, were observed in the anaphylactic patients than in asthmatic patients on acute exacerbation and healthy control subjects. Concentrations of EDN and LTBG were not significantly different among the anaphylactic patients, asthmatic patients on acute exacerbation and healthy subjects. There was a significant correlation between urinary LTE4 and 9alpha, 11beta-PGF2 concentrations in the anaphylactic patients (r=0.672, P=0.005, n=32). In addition, LTE4 concentration in patients with anaphylactic shock is significantly elevated compared with that in patients without anaphylactic shock. CONCLUSIONS This is a report on the significant increase in urinary LTE4 and 9alpha, 11beta-PGF2 concentrations during anaphylaxis. Urinary LTE4 and 9alpha, 11beta-PGF2 concentrations may be a reliable marker of endogenous production of inflammatory mediators associated with anaphylaxis.

Abstract
The misfit oxide, Bi2Ba1.3K0.6Co2.1O7.94, made of alternating rocksalt-structured [BiO/BaO] layers and hexagonal CoO2 layers, was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, revealing the electronic structure of a highly strained oxide interface. We found that low-energy states are confined within individual sides of the interface, but scattered by the incommensurate crystal field from the other side. Furthermore, the high strain on the rocksalt layer induces large charge transfer to the CoO2 layer, and a novel effect, the interfacial enhancement of electron-phonon interactions, is discovered.

Abstract
NbSe2 is a prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) material, whose mechanism remains mysterious so far. With angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we recovered the long-lost nesting condition over a large broken-honeycomb region in the Brillouin zone, which consists of six saddle band point regions with high density of states (DOS), and large regions away from Fermi surfaces with negligible DOS at the Fermi energy. We show that the major contributions to the CDW formation come from these barely occupied states rather than the saddle band points. Our findings not only resolve a long-standing puzzle, but also overthrow the conventional wisdom that CDW is dominated by regions with high DOS.

Abstract
A chronic inhalation toxicity/carcinogenicity study of potassium octatitanate fibers (TISMO) was conducted in male Fischer 344 rats. Groups of 135 rats were exposed via whole-body inhalation to 0, 20, 60, or 200 WHO fibers/cc of TISMO, 6 h/day, 5 days/w for 24 mo. Six of 30 subgroup rats were killed after 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 mo of exposure for lung burden evaluations. Another 30 subgroup rats were removed from the exposure chambers after 6 mo of exposure, placed in clean air, and from this group 6 rats were killed at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 mo later to study lung clearance. The remaining 75 rats in each group were subjected to 24 mo of exposure for chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity study. Rats exposed to HEPA-filtered air (chamber control) were used as a negative control in each study. The lung burden results indicated that a time point of equilibrium between lung burden and lung clearance at 20 WHO fibers/cc exposure was attained after approximately 18 mo of exposure. There was no difference in the number of WHO fiber from the lungs between 18 and 24 mo at 20 WHO fibers/cc exposure. But disproportional rapid increase in lung burden at 200 WHO fibers/cc exposure appeared to be saturation of lung clearance mechanism resulting from lung overloading. At 200 WHO fibers/cc exposure, approximately 22.9 and 70.5 million WHO fibers were retained in the lung after 3 and 6 mo of exposure, respectively, but lungs revealed normal in appearance. However, alveolar walls enclosing aggregated TISMO-laden alveolar macrophages (AMs) showed fibrotic thickening and approximately 197.3 million WHO fibers were retained in the lungs after 18 mo of exposure. Inhaled fibers were rapidly cleared during 3- and 6-mo recovery periods, and thereafter gradually progressive fiber reduction was observed throughout 18 mo of recovery. The number of WHO fibers decreased by approximately 72%, 74%, and 79% in the 200, 60, and 20 WHO fibers/cc groups, respectively, at the end of the 18-mo recovery period following 6 mo of exposure. Although inhaled TISMO fibers in the 20 WHO fibers/cc exposure group were phagocytized by alveolar macrophages (AMs) the lung morphology appeared normal throughout 24 mo of exposure. At 60 WHO fibers/cc exposure, a slight dose- and time-dependent increase in TISMO-laden AMs was observed throughout 3, 6, and 12 mo of exposure and some alveoli containing aggregated TISMO-laden AMs showed alveolar wall thickening at 18 mo of exposure and minimal alveolar fibrosis at 24 mo of exposure. The exposure concentration is interpreted as a borderline effect level. At 200 WHO fibers/cc exposure, lungs preserved normal architecture at 3 and 6 mo of exposure. Some alveolar walls enclosing aggregates of TISMO-laden AMs were slightly thickened after 12 mo of exposure and revealed slight alveolar fibrosis after 18 and 24 mo of exposure. Neither exposure related-pulmonary neoplasm nor mesothelioma was observed in 24 mo of exposure. The 20 WHO fibers/cc exposure concentration is considered to be a no-observable-adverse-effect level (NOAEL). TISMO exposure limits of 1 WHO fiber/cc would not impose a significant health hazard to humans in the workplace based on the animal experiments and medical surveys on workers.

Abstract
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons along the nodal direction of oxygen isotope substituted Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) reveals a distinct oxygen isotope shift near the electron-boson coupling "kink" in the electronic dispersion. The magnitude (a few meV) and direction of the kink shift are as expected due to the measured isotopic shift of phonon frequency, and are also in agreement with theoretical expectations. This demonstrates the participation of the phonons as dominant players, as well as pinpointing the most relevant of the phonon branches.

Abstract
Results of groundwater and seawater analyses for radioactive (3H, 222Rn, 223Ra, 224Ra, 226Ra, and 228Ra) and stable (D and 18O) isotopes are presented together with in situ spatial mapping and time series 222Rn measurements in seawater, direct seepage measurements using manual and automated seepage meters, pore water investigations using different tracers and piezometric techniques, and geoelectric surveys probing the coast. This study represents first time that such a new complex arsenal of radioactive and non-radioactive tracer techniques and geophysical methods have been used for simultaneous submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) investigations. Large fluctuations of SGD fluxes were observed at sites situated only a few meters apart (from 0 cm d(-1) to 360 cm d(-1); the unit represents cm3/cm2/day), as well as during a few hours (from 0 cm d(-1) to 110 cm d(-1)), strongly depending on the tidal fluctuations. The average SGD flux estimated from continuous 222Rn measurements is 17+/-10 cm d(-1). Integrated coastal SGD flux estimated for the Ubatuba coast using radium isotopes is about 7x10(3) m3 d(-1) per km of the coast. The isotopic composition (deltaD and delta18O) of submarine waters was characterised by significant variability and heavy isotope enrichment, indicating that the contribution of groundwater in submarine waters varied from a small percentage to 20%. However, this contribution with increasing offshore distance became negligible. Automated seepage meters and time series measurements of 222Rn activity concentration showed a negative correlation between the SGD rates and tidal stage. This is likely caused by sea level changes as tidal effects induce variations of hydraulic gradients. The geoelectric probing and piezometric measurements contributed to better understanding of the spatial distribution of different water masses present along the coast. The radium isotope data showed scattered distributions with offshore distance, which imply that seawater in a complex coast with many small bays and islands was influenced by local currents and groundwater/seawater mixing. This has also been confirmed by a relatively short residence time of 1-2 weeks for water within 25 km offshore, as obtained by short-lived radium isotopes. The irregular distribution of SGD seen at Ubatuba is a characteristic of fractured rock aquifers, fed by coastal groundwater and recirculated seawater with small admixtures of groundwater, which is of potential environmental concern and has implications on the management of freshwater resources in the region.

Abstract
Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells play a protective role in the development of certain autoimmune diseases. However, their precise role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune arthritis remains unclear. In this study, we examined the possible contribution of iNKT cells in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) by using iNKT cell-deficient mice (Jalpha281-/- mice). CIA in these mice was markedly suppressed and interleukin (IL)-17 production was reduced in a native type II collagen (CII)-specific T cell response. Draining lymph nodes of CII-immunized Jalpha281-/- mice contained a significantly low number of IL-17-producing T helper cells. To determine whether iNKT cells produce IL-17, we measured IL-17 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in iNKT cells stimulated with the ligand, alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer). Notably, splenocytes from Jalpha281-/- mice stimulated in this way were negative for IL-17, whereas those from C57BL/6 mice produced IL-17. Immunostaining for IL-17 in iNKT cells confirmed intracellular staining of the protein. RT-PCR analysis showed that iNKT cells expressed retinoid-related orphan receptor gammaT and IL-23 receptor. Moreover, cell sorting demonstrated that NK1.1- iNKT cells were the main producers of IL-17 compared with NK1.1+ iNKT cells. IL-17 production by iNKT cells was induced by IL-23-dependent and -independent pathways, since iNKT produced IL-17 when stimulated with either IL-23 or alpha-GalCer alone. Our findings indicate that iNKT cells are producers and activators of IL-17 via IL-23- dependent and -independent pathways, suggesting that they are key cells in the pathogenesis of CIA through IL-17.

Abstract
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study is reported on a high quality optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta high-Tc superconductor. In the antinodal region with a maximal d-wave gap, the symbolic superconducting coherence peak, which has been widely observed in multi-CuO2-layer cuprate superconductors, is unambiguously observed in a single-layer system. The associated peak-dip separation is just about 19 meV, which is much smaller than its counterparts in multilayered compounds, but correlates with the energy scales of spin excitations in single-layer cuprates.

Abstract
The basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is one of the most powerful growth factors to promote wound healing. In this paper we describe two cases of skull base tumor requiring extensive skull base reconstruction, in which the application of bFGF was effective in the management and prevention of CSF leaks. The role and safeness of bFGF for skull base reconstruction are discussed.

Abstract
In a nasal vaccine against influenza, the activation of natural killer T (NKT) cells by intranasal coadministration of alpha-galactosylceramide (alpha-GalCer) can potently enhance protective immune responses. The results of this study show that the NKT cell-activated nasal vaccine can induce an effective cross-protection against different strains of influenza virus, including H5 type. To analyze the mechanism of NKT cell activation by this nasal vaccine, we prepared fluorescence-labeled alpha-GalCer by which we detect a direct interaction between NKT cells and alpha-GalCer-stored dendritic cells in nasal mucosa-associated tissues. Accordingly, although very few NKT cells exist at mucosa, the nasal vaccination induced a localized increase in NKT cell population, which is partly dependent on CXCL16/CXCR6. Furthermore, we found that NKT cell activation stimulates mucosal IgA production by a mechanism that is dependent on interleukin (IL)-4 production. These results strengthen the basis of nasal vaccination via NKT cell activation, which can induce immune cross-protection.

Abstract
Although eosinophils produce cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs) in large quantities, information on the relationship between CysLTs and eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) is lacking. Inflammatory mediator concentrations in urine were quantified to clarify the relationship between CysLT concentrations and EP severity. Leukotriene (LT)E(4), eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), 9alpha,11beta-prostaglandin F2 and LTB(4) glucuronide concentrations were quantified in the urine of: EP patients during acute exacerbation and clinical remission; asthmatic patients during acute exacerbation and under stable conditions; and healthy control subjects. The urinary LTE(4) and EDN concentrations of EP patients during acute exacerbation were significantly higher than those of asthmatic patients and healthy subjects, and decreased immediately during clinical remission. The urinary LTE(4) concentration was associated with the urinary EDN concentration of EP patients during acute exacerbation. The urinary LTE(4) concentration significantly correlated with the diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide in EP patients during acute exacerbation. The increased urinary concentrations of leukotriene and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin were associated with acute exacerbation in eosinophilic pneumonia patients. The increased leukotriene concentration significantly correlated with diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, suggesting that the monitoring of leukotriene concentration may aid in the management of eosinophilic pneumonia patients.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the effects of the reproductive cycle of donor cat on the quality of oocytes at recovery and developmental competence of oocytes after in vitro fertilization (IVF) and somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT). Based on the presence or absence of follicles and corpora lutea, the ovarian pairs collected were classified into inactive, follicular or luteal stages. After collection of oocytes, the oocytes were classified into four grades according to the morphological condition of oocyte cytoplasm and cumulus cells. A total of 16 558 oocytes were obtained from 198 ovarian pairs. The total mean numbers of oocytes and the mean numbers of oocytes with high quality (grade I) were significantly higher in ovarian pairs at the inactive stage (111.1 and 19.0 oocytes, respectively) than in ovarian pairs at the follicular stage (67.1 and 11.4 oocytes, respectively). A significant difference in the proportions of oocytes with grade I out of the total examined oocytes was observed between the follicular and luteal stages of ovaries (14.9% vs 20.2%, p < 0.05). The proportions of IVF embryos cleaved and developed to blastocysts significantly decreased with decreased quality of oocytes at recovery, irrespective of the reproductive status of ovaries. Moreover, there were no significant differences in the proportions of cleavage and development to the blastocyst stage of IVF and NT embryos among three oestrous stages of ovaries. These results indicate that the reproductive cycle stage of donor cat ovaries has no apparent effects on the in vitro development of oocytes after IVF and NT, but the quality of oocytes at recovery influences the development of IVF embryos.

Abstract
Catalase, which can decompose H2O2, has recently been found to generate unspecified reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a result of ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation. Many proteins, hemes, and iron compounds were first tested to determine that this ROS generation was unique to catalase and immunoglobulin G (IgG). An increase in absorbance at 502 nm due to 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein, the oxidized product of 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorecein diacetate as a result of UVB (310 nm) irradiation, was measured in order to estimate this ROS generation. Catalase and IgG generated a pronounced amount of ROS when irradiated with UVB. Another heme protein, cytochrome c, and heat-inactivated catalase had no such effect. ROS generation by catalase was at least 5 times more potent than that reported for IgG with UVB and without antigens. This catalasemediated ROS generation was largely temperaturedependent in the range of 25 to 42°C. As IgG is considered an evolutionally important bactericidal component, the same was considered true for this enzyme. Next, inhibitory effects of various drugs, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory drugs, on catalase-mediated and UVB-induced ROS generation were examined. Many of the drugs, including catalase inhibitors, had inhibitory effects with different potencies. Melanin was found to be the most effective inhibitor of this ROS generation (IC(30), 0.2 μg/mL), followed by Indigo Carmine and rutin. Also inhibiting this ROS generation were ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol, indomethacin, coenzyme Q10, β-carotene, uric acid, piroxicam, diclofenac, and glutathione, in that order of potency. Various ROS were apparently generated by catalase under UVB, creating a cycle or chain which was thought due to the biphasic effects of some drugs such as 3-aminotriazole or sodium azide. Excess ROS generation induces inflammation. Catalase might serve dual roles, removing H2O2 and generating various ROS depending on the H2O2 concentration and other factors.

Abstract
We investigated the role of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons in receptive relaxation of the rat stomach in response to distension. Under urethane anesthesia, a balloon with barostat was inserted through the pylorus and placed in the forestomach. Isobaric distension was performed in a stepwise increment of 2 mmHg, each lasting for 2 min, while the corresponding intragastric volume was recorded. Gastric distension produced the intraballoon volume in a progressive manner with saturation, suggesting the occurrence of receptive relaxation of the stomach during distension. Intragastric application of capsaicin significantly enhanced the degree of receptive relaxation. The capsaicin-induced enhancement of receptive relaxation was totally abolished by bilateral vagotomy as well as chemical ablation of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons. Likewise, the enhanced receptive relaxation in response to stomach distension was also significantly attenuated by pretreatment of the animals with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, an inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP)8-37 (CGRP antagonist), indomethacin and ONO-8711 (EP1 receptor antagonist). These results suggest that capsaicin significantly enhanced the receptive relaxation induced by gastric distention through both vagal nerves and capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons. This process is intervened by endogenous NO and CGRP in addition to prostaglandins (PGs), and the effect of PGs may be mediated by EP1 receptors.

Abstract
The H(-) ion accelerator R&D to realize the international thermonuclear experimental reactor neutral beam is ongoing at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The required performance for the prototype MeV accelerator developed at JAEA is 1 MeV, 500 mA (current density of 200 A/m(2)) H(-) ion beam at the beamlet divergence angle of less than 7 mrad. Up to 2005, 836 keV, 146 A/m(2) H(-) ion beam was successfully accelerated as the highest record of the current density at MeV class energy beams. In the present work, high current negative ion beam acceleration test was performed by increasing the beam extraction apertures from 3 x 3 (9 apertures) to 3 x 5 (15 apertures). By fixing the air leak at the source chamber due to backstream ions as well as the improvement of voltage holding capability by a new fiber reinforced plastic insulator ring, the performance of the MeV accelerator was improved. So far, H(-) ion beam of 320 mA was successfully accelerated up to 796 keV with the beam divergence angle of 5.5 mrad. The accelerated drain current including the electron reaches close to the power supply limit for the MeV test facility. The heat flux by the backstream ion during the above beam acceleration was estimated to be 360 W/cm(2). The Cs leakage to the accelerator during the test campaign (Cs total input of 5.0 g) was 0.26 mg (7.0 microg/cm(2)). This is considered to be the allowable level from the viewpoint of voltage holding.

Abstract
Based on previous studies on the spatial uniformity of the negative ion beam, the external magnetic filter was replaced to a novel tent-shaped magnetic filter in the JAEA 10 A negative ion source. The line-cusp field configuration on the source chamber was also changed to form a symmetric magnetic field like many of positive ion sources aiming at high proton yield. This magnetic field configuration allows fast electrons emitted from filament cathodes to rotate azimuthally inside the source chamber. The source configuration thus prevents localization of fast electrons due to their B x grad B drift in the filter field. As a result, the H(-) ion beam profile extracted from a wide region of 340 x 170 mm(2) showed reduction of standard deviation from 16% in the original to 7.9% with the tent filter. The negative ion source with the tent filter satisfied the requirement of the beam uniformity for a large negative ion source in the ITER neutral beam injection.

Abstract
In order to obviate a small-for-size graft syndrome (SFSGS), a portacaval (PC) shunt had been considered in a case of adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation (AA-LDLT). In a recent AA-LDLT case, we adopted the PC shunt to resolve SFSGS; however, graft atrophy was observed in the late period of LDLT, thereby resulting in liver dysfunction. Due to the surgical closure of the PC shunt at 11 months post-LDLT, the graft regenerated gradually and resulted in the recovery of the liver function. This experience indicates that the portacaval shunt would overcome SFSGS in the early period of LDLT, while it would cause the graft atrophy and the graft dysfunction in the late period of LDLT.

Abstract
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) catalyzes the synthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). In cattle, the MUFAs are related to softness and flavor of meat. In order to investigate gene expression profile during bovine preadipocyte differentiation, we isolated stromal-vascular cells from perirenal adipose tissues of Japanese Black and Holstein steers. Gene expression level of adipocyte type fatty acid binding protein (FABP4), SCD, sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha (C/EBP-alpha) were elucidated by real-time PCR assay. The levels of SCD mRNA expression were significantly increased to 10.8 and 6.3-fold in Japanese Black and Holstein, respectively, on day 1 of the culture. The difference in SCD expression between the two breeds may reflect differences in the fat development characteristics of the cattle breeds. Although transcription factors SREBP1 and C/EBP-alpha are supposed to regulate SCD expression, expression levels of the two factors were not completely consistent with that of SCD.

Abstract
The electronic structure of a new charge-density-wave system or superconductor, 1T-Cu(x)TiSe(2), has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. A correlated semiconductor band structure is revealed for the undoped case, which resolves a long-standing controversy in the system. With Cu doping, the charge-density wave is suppressed by the raising of the chemical potential, while the superconductivity is enhanced by the enhancement of the density of states, and possibly suppressed at higher doping by the strong scattering.

It is necessary for anesthesiologists to concentrate on caring of the parturients in order to offer safe and effective labor epidural analgesia. We discussed how to begin and continue to offer the labor epidural based on our experience while the number of anesthesiologists is insufficient.

Abstract
Calciphylaxis (calcific uremic arteriolopathy) is a poorly understood and highly morbid syndrome of both vascular calcification and skin necrosis. The main histopathological finding is calcium deposits within arteriolar and small vessel walls, showing endovascular fibrosis associated with fat necrosis. The therapeutic strategy is to normalize the high calcium-phosphate products (Ca x P). When calciphylaxis is complicated with advanced renal hyperparathyroidism (HPT), parathyroidectomy (PTX) should be performed promptly. However, for patients with low PTH level, calciphylaxis is unresponsive to PTX, and such an approach may worsen hyperphosphatemia and hypercalcemia. We report two patients with calciphylaxis confirmed by skin biopsy. PTX was performed in both patients based on high PTH levels. PTH and Ca x P level decreased in both patients post PTX. In Case 1, the skin ulcers gradually improved and almost disappeared after PTX. However, in Case 2, new ulcers appeared after PTX. In Case 1, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) after PTX was approximately twice its level before surgery and PTX resulted in normalization of uptake on bone scintigraphy. However, no rise in ALP was noted in Case 2, probably due to long-term use of aluminum, which prevented bone formation. These findings suggest that differences in the extent of bone formation explain the different response in post-PTX ulcer healing.

Abstract
A quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst is a very rare cause of typical trigeminal neuralgia. A 62-year-old woman presented with right facial pain of 8 years duration. Neuroradiological findings revealed a cystic mass in the quadrigeminal region that compressed the cerebellum downward and the brainstem anteriorly and was associated with hydrocephalus. She had neuroendoscopically-assisted cyst-cisternal shunting via a small craniotomy. Postoperatively, the trigeminal neuralgia disappeared. The origin of the trigeminal neuralgia may have either been a marked distortion of the pons that caused stretching of the trigeminal nerve and irregular demyelination within the root entry zone, or there was contact between the root entry zone and a vascular structure. Neuroendoscopy is useful for treating arachnoid cysts; however, in order to safely relieve symptoms, the procedure needs to be appropriately adapted depending on the pathogenesis. In this paper, we review the literature and discuss the pathophysiology and treatment of our case.

Abstract
The mechanism by which CD1d-restricted Valpha14 natural killer T (NKT) cells participate in transplant tolerance has yet to be completely clarified. Recently, we showed that repeated activation of NKT cells by their specific glycolipid ligand, alpha-galactosylceramide, leads to a change in function to an immune regulatory role with IL-10 production. Moreover, these cells were shown to be able to induce regulatory dendritic cells (DCs). In this study, we showed that NKT cells from transplant tolerant recipients of cardiac allograft produced higher levels of IL-10, which is required for the maintenance of tolerance; this was proved by adoptive transfer experiments. In addition, DCs from wild-type (WT) tolerant recipients but not NKT cell-deficient recipients showed a higher IL-10-producing profile, a more immature phenotype, and tolerogenic capability. CD4 T cells from WT tolerant recipients but not NKT cell-deficient recipients also produced higher levels of IL-10 upon alloantigen stimulation and showed lower proliferative activity that was reversed by blocking the IL-10 receptor. These data indicate the existence of IL-10-dependent immune regulatory interplay among NKT cells, DCs, and CD4 T cells, even in the absence of artificial stimulation of NKT cells with synthetic glicolipids, which is required for the maintenance of transplant tolerance.

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to investigate the effects of the stage of the estrous cycle at the start of an estradiol benzoate (EB) and progesterone (P) based treatment protocol on new follicular wave emergence, subsequent estrus and ovulation. The experiment was conducted using a crossover design with each cow (five cross-bred cows) being assigned to one of three groups at 3-month intervals within a 1-year period. Estrous cycle stage in individual cows was initially synchronized with prostaglandin F(2)alpha. After detection of estrus, each cow was injected intramuscularly (i.m.) with 2 mg EB and 200 mg P (EB/P) on day 5, 12 or 17 of the estrous cycle (estrus=day 0), followed by 1 mg EB i.m. 12 days after the EB/P treatment. Ovarian ultrasonographic examinations showed that the emergence of a new follicular wave occurred after EB/P treatment in all groups and the mean interval from EB/P treatment to wave emergence did not differ among the groups (3.2-3.8 days). All cows in each group exhibited behavioral estrus and ovulated the newly formed dominant follicle. However, cows in the day-17 group exhibited estrus 1-3 days before the second EB injection. The concentrations of progesterone showed faster reduction, during the treatment period, in the day-12 and -17 groups compared to the day-5 group. These results indicate that the EB/P treatment induces an emergence of a new follicular wave, irrespective of the estrous cycle stage at the start of treatment, but the effect of EB/P protocol on estrous/ovulation synchronization is influenced by the stage of the estrous cycle.

Abstract
The enteric nervous system arises from vagal (caudal hindbrain) and sacral level neural crest-derived cells that migrate into and along the developing gut. Data from previous studies have suggested that (i) there may be gradients along the gut that induce the caudally directed migration of vagal enteric neural precursors (ENPs), (ii) exposure to the caecum might alter the migratory ability of vagal ENPs and (iii) Sema3A might regulate the entry into the hindgut of ENPs derived from sacral neural crest. Using co-cultures we show that there is no detectable gradient of chemoattractive molecules along the pre-caecal gut that specifically promotes the caudally directed migration of vagal ENPs, although vagal ENPs migrate faster caudally than rostrally along explants of hindgut. Exposure to the caecum did not alter the rate at which ENPs colonized explants of hindgut, but it did alter the ability of ENPs to colonize the midgut. The co-cultures also revealed that there is localized expression of a repulsive cue in the distal hindgut, which might delay the entry of sacral ENPs. We show that Sema3A is expressed by the hindgut mesenchyme and its receptor, neuropilin-1, is expressed by migrating ENPs. Furthermore, there is premature entry of sacral ENPs and extrinsic axons into the distal hindgut of fetal mice lacking Sema3A. These data show that Sema3A expressed by the distal hindgut regulates the entry of sacral ENPs and extrinsic axons into the hindgut. ENPs did not express neuropilin-2 and there was no detectable change in the timetable by which ENPs colonize the gut in mice lacking neuropilin-2.

Abstract
In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. Similar behavior observed in blue bronze and the Mott insulator Ca2CuO2Cl2 suggests that the origin of hopping-dominated dispersion in an overdoped cuprate might be quite complicated. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.

Abstract
Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) is a gene disrupted by a (1;11) (q42.1;q14.3) translocation that segregates with major psychiatric disorders in a Scottish family. To investigate how DISC1 confers susceptibility to psychiatric disorders, we previously identified fasciculation and elongation protein zeta-1 and Kendrin as DISC1-interacting molecules in a yeast two-hybrid screen of a human brain complementary DNA library. Here, we have further identified a novel DISC1-interacting protein, termed DISC1-Binding Zinc-finger protein (DBZ), which has a predicted C(2)H(2)-type zinc-finger motif and coiled-coil domains. DBZ was co-immunoprecipitated with DISC1 in lysates of PC12 cells and rat brain tissue. The domain of DISC1 interacting with DBZ was close to the translocation breakpoint in the DISC1 gene. DBZ messenger RNA (mRNA) was expressed in human brains, but not in peripheral tissues. In situ hybridization revealed high expression of DBZ mRNA in the hippocampus, olfactory tubercle, cerebral cortex and striatum in rats. Because this pattern of localization was similar to that of the pituitary adenylate cyclase (PAC(1)) receptor for pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), which has recently been implicated in neuropsychological functions, we examined whether DISC1/DBZ interaction was involved in the PACAP signaling pathway. PACAP upregulated DISC1 expression and markedly reduced the association between DISC1 and DBZ in PC12 cells. A DISC1-binding domain of DBZ reduced the neurite length in PC12 cells after PACAP stimulation and in primary cultured hippocampal neurons. The present results provide some new molecular insights into the mechanisms of neuronal development and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To establish multiple bypass flow in an adult Moyamoya disease patient, the distal stump of the parietal superficial temporal artery (dsPSTA) was used as an additional donor. METHODS Its potential as the donor was first evaluated by measuring the arterial pressure directly in three patients, revealing about 80% in mean arterial pressure of those measured at the proximal stump and radial artery. The anastomosis was performed just as conventionally except an additional anastomosis between the dsPSTA and frontal branch of the middle cerebral artery in 10 hemispheres of 7 patients. RESULTS The patency of the dsPSTA bypass was confirmed on postoperative angiography in 5 patients. The comparison of pre- and post-operative single photon emission computed tomography was feasible in 8 hemispheres of 6 patients of which 7 demonstrated improvement of the cerebral blood flow. CONCLUSION; This technique provides a novel source of donor artery in the treatment of Moyamoya disease, in which multiple anastomoses are desirable.
