Abstract
In this paper we describe a novel methodology for grafting polymers via radical photopolymerization initiated on gold surfaces by aryl layers from diazonium salt precursors. The parent 4-(dimethylamino)benzenediazonium salt was electroreduced on a gold surface to provide 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl (DMA) hydrogen donor layers; free benzophenone in solution was used as a photosensitizer to strip hydrogen from the grafted DMA. This system permitted efficient surface initiation of photopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The resulting poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) grafts were found to be very adherent to the surface as they resist total failure after being soaked in the well-known paint stripper methyl ethyl ketone. The PHEMA grafts were reacted with 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole to yield carbamate groups that are able to react readily with amino groups from proteins. The final surface consisted of protein-functionalized PHEMA grafts where bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein is specifically linked to the grafts by covalent bonds. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to monitor the chemical changes at the gold surface all along the process from the neat gold to the end-protein-functionalized polymer grafts: the PHEMA graft thickness ranged from 7 to 27 nm, and the activation by 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole reached 37% of the OH groups, which was sufficient for 90% surface coverage of the grafts by BSA. This work conclusively provides a new approach for bridging reactive and functional polymers to surfaces via aryl diazonium salts in a simple, fast, and efficient approach of importance in biomedical and other applications.

Abstract
Inverse opal films of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) were elaborated using the colloidal crystal template method. The colloidal crystals of silica particles were built by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, allowing a perfect control of the film thickness. Polymerization in the interspaces of the colloidal crystal in the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) and removal of the used template provides 3D-ordered macroporous methacrylic acid-based hydrogel films in which nanocavities derived from bisphenol A are distributed within the thin walls of the inverse opal hydrogel. The equilibrium swelling properties of the nonimprinted (NIPs) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were studied as a function of pH and bisphenol A concentration, while the molecular structures of the bulk hydrogels were analyzed using a cross-linked network structure theory. This study showed an increase in nanopore (mesh) size in the MIPs after BPA extraction as compared to NIPs, in agreement with the presence of nanocavities left by the molecular imprints of the template molecule. The resulting inverse opals were found to display large responses to external stimuli (pH or BPA) with Bragg diffraction peak shifts depending upon the hydrogel film thickness. The film thickness was therefore shown to be a critical parameter for improving the sensing capacities of inverse opal hydrogel films deposited on a substrate.

Abstract
Homopolymer grafts from α-tert-butoxy-ω-vinylbenzyl-polyglycidol (PGL) were prepared on gold and stainless steel (SS) substrates modified by 4-benzoyl-phenyl (BP) moieties derived from the electroreduction of the parent salt 4-benzoyl benzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate. The grafted BP aryl groups efficiently served to surface-initiate photopolymerization (SIPP) of PGL. In similar conditions, SIPP of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) permitted the production of PHEMA grafts as model surfaces. Water contact angles were found to be 66°, 15°, and 0° for SS-BP, SS-PHEMA, and SS-PPGL, respectively. The spontaneous spreading of water drops on SS-PPGL was invariably observed with 1.5 μL water drops. PPGL thus appears as a superhydrophilic polymer. Resistance to nonspecific adsorption of proteins of PPGL and PHEMA grafts on gold was evaluated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) using antibovine serum albumin (anti-BSA). The results conclusively show that PPGL-grafts exhibit enhanced resistance to anti-BSA adsorption compared to the well-known hydrophilic PHEMA. PPGL grafts were further modified with BSA through the carbonyldiimidazole activation of the OH groups providing immunosensing surfaces. The so-prepared PPGL-grafted BSA hybrids specifically interacted with anti-BSA in PBS as compared to antimyoglobin. It is clear that the superhydrophilic character of PPGL grafts opens new avenues for biomedical applications where surfaces with dual functionality, namely, specific protein grafting together with resistance to biofouling, are required.

Abstract
Optical properties of polymer microspheres with polystyrene cores and polyglycidol-enriched shells poly(styrene/α-tert-butoxy-ω-vinylbenzyl-polyglycidol) (P(S/PGL) particles with number average diameters Dn determined by scanning electron microscopy equal 237 and 271 nm), were studied before and after immobilization of ovalbumin. The particles were synthesized by emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene and polyglycidol macromonomer (poly(styrene/α-tert-butoxy-ω-vinylbenzyl-polyglycidol)) initiated with potassium persulfate. Molar fraction of polyglycidol units in the interfacial layer of the microspheres determined by XPS was equal 42.6 and 34.0%, for the particles with Dn equal 137 and 271 nm, respectively. Colloidal crystals from the aforementioned particles were prepared by deposition of particle suspensions on the glass slides and subsequent evaporation of water. It was found that optical properties of colloidal crystals from the P(S/PGL) microspheres strongly depend on modification of their interfacial layer by covalent immobilization of ovalbumin. The coating of particles with ovalbumin resulted in decreasing their refractive index from 1.58 to 1.52.

Abstract
We describe a simple and robust method for high-throughput surface patterning of deformable substrates such as silicone rubber films covered with a thin layer of protein and cell antifouling hydrogel (PLL-g-PEG). The irradiation with deep UV (<200 nm) of PLL-g-PEG-coated rubber substrates through a synthetic quartz photomask created micropatterns over a large area of the substrate. Incubation with proteins resulted in stable patterns with high feature resolution. RPE1 cells seeded on fibronectin patterns were constrained for days even after stretching. We also propose the crossbow feature as an interesting example allowing the stretching of normalized stress fibers.

Abstract
AbstractPolystyrene latexes were prepared, in the presence of, vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) monomer. These particles were synthesized in surfactant-free batch radical emulsion polymerization of styrene and VBC monomer mixture, with 2,2’- azobis(2-amidino propane)di-hydrochloride (V50) initiator. The polymerization kinetics was found to be rapid, as a function of VBC monomer concentration in the polymerization recipe. It is interesting to notice that high VBC amount leads to marked coagulum formation. The final hydrodynamic particle size was found to be slightly sensitive to the VBC concentration in the investigated range. The presence of VBC at the surface of the particles was investigated by XPS analysis.

Abstract
This paper describes a general stepwise strategy combining diazonium salt, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and click chemistry for an efficient gold surface functionalization by poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes and gold nanoparticle assemblies. We designed by this way a new plasmonic device made of gold nanoparticles separated from a gold film through a thermoresponsive polymer layer. This organic layer responds to temperature variations by conformational changes (with a characteristic temperature called the lower critical solution temperature, LCST) and is therefore able to vary the distance between the gold nanoparticles and the gold film. The optical properties of these stimulable substrates were probed by surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS) using methylene blue (MB) as a molecular probe. We show that an increase of the external temperature reversibly induces a significant enhancement of the MB SERS signal. This was attributed to a stronger interaction between the gold nanoparticles and the gold substrate. The temperature-responsive plasmonic devices developed in this paper thus provide a dynamic SERS platform, with thermally switchable electromagnetic coupling between the gold nanoparticles and the gold surface.
