Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical or psychological stress causes functional disorders in the upper gastrointestinal tract. This study aims to elucidate the ameliorating effect of exogenous acylated ghrelin or rikkunshito, a Kampo medicine which acts as a ghrelin enhancer, on gastric dysfunction during acute restraint stress in mice. METHODS Fasted and postprandial motor function of the gastric antrum was wirelessly measured using a strain gauge force transducer and solid gastric emptying was detected in mice exposed to restraint stress. Plasma corticosterone and ghrelin levels were also measured. To clarify the role of ghrelin on gastrointestinal dysfunction in mice exposed to stress, exogenous acylated ghrelin or rikkunshito was administered, then the mice were subjected to restraint stress. KEY RESULTS Mice exposed to restraint stress for 60 min exhibited delayed gastric emptying and increased plasma corticosterone levels. Gastric motility was decreased in mice exposed to restraint stress in both fasting and postprandial states. Restraint stress did not cause any change in plasma acylated ghrelin levels, but it significantly increased the plasma des-acyl ghrelin levels. Administration of acylated ghrelin or rikkunshito improved the restraint stress-induced delayed gastric emptying and decreased antral motility. Ameliorating effects of rikkunshito on stress-induced gastric dysfunction were abolished by simultaneous administration of a ghrelin receptor antagonist. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Plasma acylated/des-acyl ghrelin imbalance was observed in acute restraint stress. Supplementation of exogenous acylated ghrelin or enhancement of endogenous ghrelin signaling may be useful in the treatment of decreased gastric function caused by stress.

Abstract
Using radio frequency - magnetron sputtering, calcium-doped barium zirconate titanate ((Ba(0.85)Ca(0.15))(Zr(0.1)Ti(0.9))O(3), BCZT) thin films were deposited on Si wafers with different bottom electrodes. The obtained BCZT thin film on a lanthanum nickel oxide (LNO) electrode had a highly c-axis preferred orientation, while the BCZT thin film on a Pt bottom electrode had (111) preferred orientation. Furthermore, the out-of-plane lattice constant of the BCZT on LNO/Si was 3.4% larger than that of the reported bulk material because of the compressive thermal stress from LNO with a large thermal expansion coefficient. This compressive thermal stress engenders an increase of the Curie temperature. The local piezoelectric response of the BCZT thin film on a LNO/Si structure was measured by piezoresponse force microscope.

Abstract
We report the phase diagram of (Ba1-xCax)(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3 solid solution. It is found that substitution of smaller Ca ions for Ba ions can slightly increase the cubic-tetragonal (T) para-ferroelectric phase transition temperature and strongly decrease the T-orthorhombic (O) and O-rhombohedral (R) transition. This unique ferroelectric phase evolution is attributed to Ca off-centering effects. More importantly, lowering of the T-O or O-R phase transitions allows us to prepare the piezoelectric ceramics with a strain response as high as S/E ≈ 800 pm V(-1) (E = 10 kV cm(-1)) over a wide range of compositions with x ≈ 0.1-0.18 at room temperature, which may be interesting for piezoelectric applications.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional analysis. OBJECTIVE To examine whether intramedullary stress is related to the appearance of symptoms in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). SETTING Japan. METHODS Thirty-three consecutive patients with CSM and 30 consecutive patients without CSM were enrolled. A total of 99 disc levels from C3 to C6 in 33 patients with CSM were divided into two groups: 33 disc levels with high signal intensity (HSI) on T2-weighted magnetic resonance image (HSI group) and 66 disc levels without HSI (Non-HSI group). Ninety disc levels from C3 to C6 in patients without CSM were set up in a control group. Intramedullary stress value at each level was analyzed using the finite element method. Stress was compared among the three groups. A cutoff value of stress to present HSI was investigated from receiver operator characteristics (ROC) curve. RESULTS In all the patients with CSM, the disc level with HSI presented the highest stress among the three disc levels evaluated. The stress was 3.16 ± 0.86 kPa (mean ± s.d.) in the HSI group, 1.81 ± 0.72 kPa in the Non-HSI group and 1.01 ± 0.37 kPa in the control group. The stress differed significantly among the three groups (P<0.0001). The qualified cutoff value derived from the ROC curve was 2.30 kPa (sensitivity 78.8%, specificity 91.9%). None of the disc levels in the control group exceeded 2.30 kPa. CONCLUSION HSI was strongly associated with intramedullary stress. Threshold of intramedullary stress to present HSI that related closely to the symptoms of myelopathy was revealed.

Abstract
Immunosuppressants have impacts on the development of polyomavirus-associated nephropathy. We previously demonstrated that cyclosporin A (CsA) suppressed polyomavirus BK (BKV) replication. The role of cyclophilin A (CypA) and nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) in CsA-imposed suppression of BKV replication was determined in this study. Results demonstrated that knockdown of CypA but not CypB significantly reduced BKV large T antigen (TAg) expression and BKV titer. Overexpression of CypA reversed CypA siRNA-induced inhibition in BKV TAg expression. In addition, CypA overexpression attenuated the suppressive effect of CsA on TAg expression, suggesting CypA implicated in CsA-mediated anti-BKV effect. Knockdown of NFATc3 abrogated TAg expression, while overexpression of NFATc3 promoted TAg expression and augmented BKV promoter activity. NFATc3 binding to the BKV promoter was verified by chromatin immunoprecipitation assay and electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Renal histology also displayed an increase in NFATc3 expression in tubulointerstitium of BKV-associated nephropathy. Furthermore, overexpression of NFATc3 rescued CsA-mediated inhibition of BKV load and TAg expression. A CsA analog, NIM811, which cannot block NFAT functionality, failed to suppress TAg expression. In conclusion, CypA and NFAT are indispensable in BKV replication. CsA inhibits BKV replication through CypA and NFAT, which may be potential targets of anti-BKV treatment.

Abstract
A 53-year-old man was referred to our hospital with bloody stool. Barium enema study and colonoscopy revealed multiple small nodules on the anterior wall of the lower rectum. Biopsy specimens showed proliferation of atypical lymphoid cells forming the nodules. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma was diagnosed on the basis of histologic and immunohistochemical examinations. No metastasis was detected in lymph nodes or distant organs, indicative of clinical stage I disease. Although the test results were negative for Helicobacter pylori, eradication therapy was performed. The lesion disappeared completely within 9 months after the triple antibiotic therapy. H. pylori eradication therapy may be a useful treatment option regardless of H. pylori status.

Abstract
Several mutations in the surfactant protein C (SP-C) gene (SFTPC) have been reported as causing familial pulmonary fibrosis (FPF). However, the genetic background and clinical features of FPF are still not fully understood. We identified one Japanese kindred, in which at least six individuals over three generations were diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. We examined the patients radiologically and histopathologically and sequenced their SFTPC and ABCA3 genes. We also established a cell line stably expressing the mutant gene. All the patients had similar radiological and histopathological characteristics. Their histopathological pattern was that of usual interstitial pneumonia, showing numerous fibroblastic foci even in areas without abnormal radiological findings on chest high-resolution computed tomography. No child had respiratory symptoms in the kindred. Sequencing of SFTPC showed a novel heterozygous mutation, c.298G>A (G100S), in the BRICHOS domain of proSP-C, which co-segregated with the disease. However, in the ABCA3 gene, no mutation was found. In vitro expression of the mutant gene revealed that several endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins were strongly expressed. The mutation increases endoplasmic reticulum stress and induces apoptotic cell death compared with wild-type SP-C in alveolar type II cells, supporting the significance of this mutation in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract
TiO2 thin films with a periodical two-dimensional close-packed hemispherical structure were prepared on Si substrates using pulsed laser deposition and close-packed monolayer polystyrene colloidal crystals as a template. Compared with conventional methods, which use a top-down approach, this route supports low-cost production of a periodic structure. Additionally, it is applicable to various ceramics for use in applications related to photonic crystals, surface self-cleaning materials, data storage media, bioassays, and so on.

Abstract
Thin films composed of MgAl2O4 and (Ni0.5Zn0.5)Fe2O4 ([MA(100-x)-NZFx] films) were grown on fused SiO2 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the films were polycrystalline, and that their lattice constant varied linearly with composition, indicating the formation of a solid solution. The film with x=60 was paramagnetic and those with x ≥ 70 were ferromagnetic. The films had a transparency above 75% in the visible range, but the transparency decreased with the x value. The optical band gaps were 2.95, 2.55, 2.30 and 1.89 eV for x=20, 40, 60, 80 and 100, respectively. The Faraday rotation angle increased with x in the visible range, and the film with x=70 exhibited a value of 2000 degrees cm-1 at 570 nm, which is comparable to the rotation angle of Y3Fe5O12. Owing to their high transparency, which extends into the visible range, the [MA(100-x)-NZFx] films can be used in novel magneto-optical devices.
