Abstract
Large parity-violating longitudinal single-spin asymmetries A(L)(e+) = -0.86(-0.14) (+0.30) and A(L)(e-) = 0.88(-0.71) (+0.12) are observed for inclusive high transverse momentum electrons and positrons in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s] = 500 GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. These e± come mainly from the decay of W± and Z0 bosons, and their asymmetries directly demonstrate parity violation in the couplings of the W± to the light quarks. The observed electron and positron yields were used to estimate W± boson production cross sections for the e± channels of σ(pp → W+ X) × BR(W+ → e+ ν(e)) = 144.1 ± 21.2(stat)(-10.3) (+3.4) (syst) ± 21.6(norm) pb, and σ(pp → W- X) × BR(W- → e- ν[over ¯](e)) = 31.7 ± 12.1(stat)(-8.2) (+10.1) (syst) ± 4.8(norm) pb.

Abstract
We report the first observation of electron-transfer-mediated decay (ETMD) and interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) from the triply charged states with an inner-valence vacancy, using the Ar dimer as an example. These ETMD and ICD processes, which lead to fragmentation of Ar(3+)-Ar into Ar(2+)-Ar(2+) and Ar(3+)-Ar+, respectively, are unambiguously identified by electron-ion-ion coincidence spectroscopy in which the kinetic energy of the ETMD or ICD electron and the kinetic energy release between the two fragment ions are measured in coincidence.

Abstract
We have measured the azimuthal anisotropy of π⁰ production for 1<p(T)<18 GeV/c for Au+Au collisions at sqrt((s)NN)=200 GeV. The observed anisotropy shows a gradual decrease for 3≲p(T)≲7-10 GeV/c, but remains positive beyond 10 GeV/c. The magnitude of this anisotropy is underpredicted, up to at least ∼10 GeV/c, by current perturbative QCD (PQCD) energy-loss model calculations. An estimate of the increase in anisotropy expected from initial-geometry modification due to gluon saturation effects and fluctuations is insufficient to account for this discrepancy. Calculations that implement a path-length dependence steeper than what is implied by current PQCD energy-loss models show reasonable agreement with the data.

Differential measurements of the elliptic (v(2)) and hexadecapole (v(4)) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p(T)) and collision centrality or number of participant nucleons (N(part)) for Au+Au collisions at sq.rt(s(NN))=200 GeV. The v(2,4) measurements at pseudorapidity |η|≤0.35, obtained with four separate reaction-plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0<|η|<3.9, show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant Δη-dependent nonflow correlations. Sizable values for v(4)(p(T)) are observed with a ratio v(4)(p(T),N(part))/v(2)(2)(p(T),N(part))≈0.8 for 50≲N(part)≲200, which is compatible with the combined effects of a finite viscosity and initial eccentricity fluctuations. For N(part)≳200 this ratio increases up to 1.7 in the most central collisions.

Abstract
Hard-scattered parton probes produced in collisions of large nuclei indicate large partonic energy loss, possibly with collective produced-medium response to the lost energy. We present measurements of π^{0} trigger particles at transverse momenta p{T}{t}=4-12 GeV/c and associated charged hadrons (p{T}{a}=0.5-7 GeV/c) vs relative azimuthal angle Δϕ in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s{NN}]=200 GeV. The Au+Au distribution at low p{T}{a}, whose shape has been interpreted as a medium effect, is modified for p{T}{t}<7 GeV/c. At higher p{T}{t}, the data are consistent with unmodified or very weakly modified shapes, even for the lowest measured p{T}{a}, which quantitatively challenges some medium response models. The associated yield of hadrons opposing the trigger particle in Au+Au relative to p+p (I{AA}) is suppressed at high p{T} (I{AA}≈0.35-0.5), but less than for inclusive suppression (R{AA}≈0.2).

Abstract
Sclerotherapy for arteriovenous malformations has to be performed under general anaesthesia because of the pain during injection and the need of careful monitoring. Two cases with arteriovenous malformations of the face regions are presented in whom percutaneous sclerotherapy was performed under local anaesthesia in the outpatient clinic. The sessions were uneventful and there was a visible decrease in the overall size and an improvement in skin colour of the lesion could be seen. Sclerotherapy can be used in the outpatient clinic to treat arteriovenous malformations that have a slow flow or a venous outflow that can be compressed to artificially slow the flow during injection.

Abstract
A dynamic phantom has been developed to allow for measurement of 3D cell survival distributions and the corresponding distributions of the RBE-weighted dose (RBED) in the presence of motion. The phantom consists of two 96-microwell plates holding Chinese hamster ovary cells inside a container filled with culture medium and is placed on a movable stage. Basic biological properties of the phantom were investigated without irradiation and after irradiation with a carbon ion beam, using both a stationary (reference) exposure and exposure during motion of the phantom perpendicular to the beam with beam tracking. There was no statistically significant difference between plating efficiency measured in the microwells with and without motion (0.75) and values reported in the literature. Mean differences between measured and calculated cell survival for these two irradiation modes were within +/-5% of the target dose of 6 Gy (RBE).

Abstract
The production of e+ e- pairs for m(e+ e-)<0.3 GeV/c2 and 1<p(T)<5 GeV/c is measured in p+p and Au+Au collisions at square root(S(NN))=200 GeV. An enhanced yield above hadronic sources is observed. Treating the excess as photon internal conversions, the invariant yield of direct photons is deduced. In central Au+Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over p+p is exponential in transverse momentum, with an inverse slope T=221+/-19(stat)+/-19(syst) MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T(init) approximately 300-600 MeV at times of approximately 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the data. Lattice QCD predicts a phase transition to quark gluon plasma at approximately 170 MeV.

Abstract
Soft tissue sarcomas of the head and neck region are rare, and very little has been described about the reconstructive methods used after sarcoma resection of cheek soft tissue sarcomas. Reconstructive methods for cheek defects after sarcoma resection are presented and the possibilities, advantages, disadvantages, and expected results are described. A series of 3 patients with cheek soft tissue sarcomas were examined. Reconstructive methods included; one skin graft, a free forearm flap and a cervicofacial flap. All patients had lesions < 5 cm and low-grade tumours, and no case presented local recurrence or metastases. The choice of reconstructive methods depends mostly on the complexity of the defect. In cases comprising comparatively small or minor defects, reconstructions using local flaps, such as the cervicofacial flap, provide better aesthetic and functional results than either free flaps or skin graft.

Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations of charged kaons are used to probe Au+Au collisions at sqrt[S(NN)]=200 GeV and are compared to charged pion probes, which have a larger hadronic scattering cross section. Three-dimensional Gaussian source radii are extracted, along with a one-dimensional kaon emission source function. The centrality dependences of the three Gaussian radii are well described by a single linear function of N(part)1/3 with a zero intercept. Imaging analysis shows a deviation from a Gaussian tail at r greater than or approximately equal to 10 fm, although the bulk emission at lower radius is well described by a Gaussian. The presence of a non-Gaussian tail in the kaon source reaffirms that the particle emission region in a heavy-ion collision is extended, and that similar measurements with pions are not solely due to the decay of long-lived resonances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the efficacy of complete (R0) resection for pulmonary metastases of colorectal carcinoma, and to clarify prognostic factors for survival that could be used to identify patients likely to benefit most from pulmonary resection. METHODS Data on 113 patients who underwent R0 resection of pulmonary metastases from colorectal cancer were reviewed. Overall median follow-up was 49 (range 1-140) months. Clinical and pathological factors were reviewed, and prognostic factors influencing survival were identified. RESULTS The overall 5-year survival rate was 67.8 per cent. Multivariable Cox hazard regression analysis revealed that the prethoracotomy serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level and lymphatic invasion by pulmonary tumour correlated significantly with survival. The 5- and 7-year survival rates of patients with a prethoracotomy CEA level below 5 ng/ml and no lymphatic invasion by pulmonary tumour were 94 and 79 per cent respectively. Pathological features of the primary colorectal cancer, previous hepatectomy for liver metastasis and repeated thoracotomy had no impact on survival. CONCLUSION Long-term survival can be expected after R0 resection of pulmonary metastases from colorectal cancer, particularly in patients with a prethoracotomy CEA level below 5 ng/ml and no lymphatic invasion by pulmonary tumour.

Abstract
The momentum distribution of electrons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom quarks for midrapidity |y|<0.35 in p+p collisions at square root of s=200 GeV is measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range 2<pT<7 GeV/c. The ratio of the yield of electrons from bottom to that from charm is presented. The ratio is determined using partial D/D-->e(+/-)K(-/+)X (K unidentified) reconstruction. It is found that the yield of electrons from bottom becomes significant above 4 GeV/c in pT. A fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation agrees with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The extracted total bottom production cross section at this energy is sigma(bb)=3.2(-1.1)(+1.2)(stat)(-1.3)(+1.4)(syst)mub.

Abstract
At photon energies near the Ne K edge it is shown that for 1s ionization the Auger electron, and for 2s ionization the fast photoelectron, launch vibrational wave packets in a Ne dimer. These wave packets then decay by emission of a slow electron via interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD). The measured and computed ICD electron spectra are shown to be significantly modified by the recoil induced nuclear motion.

Abstract
The double helicity asymmetry in neutral pion production for pT=1 to 12 GeV/c was measured with the PHENIX experiment to access the gluon-spin contribution, DeltaG, to the proton spin. Measured asymmetries are consistent with zero, and at a theory scale of micro2=4 GeV2 a next to leading order QCD analysis gives DeltaG[0.02,0.3]=0.2, with a constraint of -0.7<DeltaG[0.02,0.3]<0.5 at Deltachi2=9 (approximately 3sigma) for the sampled gluon momentum fraction (x) range, 0.02 to 0.3. The results are obtained using predictions for the measured asymmetries generated from four representative fits to polarized deep inelastic scattering data. We also consider the dependence of the DeltaG constraint on the choice of the theoretical scale, a dominant uncertainty in these predictions.

Abstract
In order to determine the effects of intestinal flora on the expression of cytochrome P450 (CYP), the mRNA expression of CYP was compared between specific pathogen-free (SPF) and germ-free (GF) mice. Most of the major CYP isozymes showed higher expression in the livers of SPF mice compared with GF mice. Nuclear factors such as pregnane X receptor (PXR) and constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), as well as transporters and conjugation enzymes involved in the detoxification of lithocholic acid (LCA), also showed higher expression in SPF mice. The findings suggest that in the livers of SPF mice, LCA produced by intestinal flora increases the expression of CYPs via activation of PXR and CAR. Drugs such as antibiotics, some diseases and ageing, etc. are known to alter intestinal flora. The present findings suggest that such changes also affect CYP and are one of the factors responsible for individual differences in pharmacokinetics.

Abstract
8601 Background: The mutations of P53 tumor suppressor protein are associated with progressive in Multiple Myeloma (MM), conversely, stabilization of P53 leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In this study, we examined p53 protein expression and demonstrated the effect of P53 stabilization using a novel specific P53 stabilizer CBS9106 in MM. Method: We examined P53 protein expression using Immunoblot analysis, as well as the growth inhibitory effect of CBS9106 in MM cell lines and primary tumor cells from MM patients. We also defined whether CBS9106 can overcome the growth promoting effect of exogenous cytokines and bone marrow stroma cells (BMSCs) using [3H]-thymidine uptake assay. Results: Expression of P53 protein was observed in 3/3 primary tumor cells from MM patients and 6/6 MM cell lines. CBS9106 at low nM levels triggered cytotoxicity against p53 wild type MM cell lines and primary tumor cells from MM patients, associated with phosphorylation of P53 (serine15 and 20). In contrast, CBS9106 did not affect the survival of normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy volunteers at concentrations as high as 10 μM. This agent also induced G1 cell cycle arrest, followed by apoptosis associated with cleavage of caspase-3, -8, -9 and PARP. Neither growth stimulating cytokines (IL-6 and IGF-1) nor BMSCs protected against apoptotic effect of CBS9106. Moreover, we demonstrate that combination of CBS9106 with MDM2 inhibitor Nutrin3 or proteasome inhibitor bortezomib induces synergistic anti-MM activity in both P53 wild type MM cell lines and primary tumor cells from MM patients. Conclusions: Stabilizing P53 by CBS9106 represents a novel promising p53-based therapy in MM. These results provide the preclinical framework supporting evaluation of CBS9106 in clinical trials to improve patient outcome in MM. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coregistration of any neuroimaging studies into treatment planning for stereotactic radiosurgery became easily applicable using the Leksell Gamma Knife 4C, a new model of gamma knife. The authors investigated the advantage of this image processing. METHOD Since installation of the Leksell Gamma Knife 4C at the authors' institute, 180 sessions of radiosurgery were performed. Before completion of planning, coregistration of frameless images of other modalities or previous images was considered to refine planning. Treatment parameters were compared for planning before and after refinement by use of coregistered images. FINDINGS Coregistered computed tomography clarified the anatomical structures indistinct on magnetic resonance imaging. Positron emission tomography visualized lesions disclosing metabolically high activity. Coregistration of prior imaging distinguished progressing lesions from stable ones. Diffusion-tensor tractography was integrated for lesions adjacent to the corticospinal tract or the optic radiation. After refinement of planning in 36 sessions, excess treated volume decreased (p = 0.0062) and Paddick conformity index improved (p < 0.001). Maximal dose to the white matter tracts was decreased (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Image coregistration provided direct information on anatomy, metabolic activity, chronological changes, and adjacent critical structures. This gathered information was sufficiently informative during treatment planning to supplement ambiguous information on stereotactic images, and was useful especially in reducing irradiation to surrounding normal structures.

Abstract
Time-resolved Schottky mass spectrometry has been applied to uranium projectile fragments which yielded the mass value for the 208Hg (Z=80, N=128) isotope. The mass excess value of ME=-13 265(31) keV has been obtained, which has been used to determine the proton-neutron interaction strength in 210Pb, as a double difference of atomic masses. The results show a dramatic variation of the strength for lead isotopes when crossing the N=126 neutron shell closure, thus confirming the empirical predictions that this interaction strength is sensitive to the overlap of the wave functions of the last valence neutrons and protons.

Abstract
The gamma decay from Coulomb excitation of 68Ni at 600 MeV/nucleon on a Au target was measured using the RISING setup at the fragment separator of GSI. The 68Ni beam was produced by a fragmentation reaction of 86Kr at 900 MeV/nucleon on a 9Be target and selected by the fragment separator. The gamma rays produced at the Au target were measured with HPGe detectors at forward angles and with BaF2 scintillators at backward angles. The measured spectra show a peak centered at approximately 11 MeV, whose intensity can be explained in terms of an enhanced strength of the dipole response function (pygmy resonance). Such pygmy structure has been predicted in this unstable neutron-rich nucleus by theory.

Abstract
For Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV, we measure neutral pion production with good statistics for transverse momentum, pT, up to 20 GeV/c. A fivefold suppression is found, which is essentially constant for 5 < pT < 20 GeV/c. Experimental uncertainties are small enough to constrain any model-dependent parametrization for the transport coefficient of the medium, e.g., q in the parton quenching model. The spectral shape is similar for all collision classes, and the suppression does not saturate in Au + Au collisions.

Abstract
Postoperative supraventricular tachyarrhythmia (SVT) remains the most common complication of cardiovascular surgery. Current guidelines recommend treatment with beta-blockers in prevention and management of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. Landiolol hydrochloride is a newly developed ultra short-acting selective beta1-blocker with a half-life of approximately 4 minutes. We investigated its effects on the cardiac function as well as on postoperative SVT. Landiolol hydrochloride had a sufficient therapeutic effect without apparent side effect. After its administration cardiac index decreased, whereas stroke volume increased. Pulmonary artery wedge pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, and central venous pressure remained unchanged. Its main effect proved to be decrease in heart rate.

Abstract
Intercellular signaling via cell-surface Notch receptors controls the cell-fate decision in the developing brain. Recent studies have suggested that the response of endogenous neural stem cells to brain injury in adult mammals might be mediated by Notch signaling. Here, we investigated the role of Notch signaling in ischemic damage in the hippocampal CA1 region after transient global ischemia in rats. In the acute phase of ischemia, Notch1-positive cells increased in number in the posterior periventricle, which is the posterior part of the lateral ventricle, after the i.c.v. administration of epidermal growth factor and fibroblast growth factor-2. In addition, Notch signaling was upregulated in the CA1 region 5 days after ischemia. By contrast, the attenuation of Notch signaling caused by the administration of a gamma-secretase inhibitor in the subacute phase (6-12 days after ischemia) amplified the immature migratory neurons 12 days after ischemia, and resulted in an increased number of newly generated neurons in the CA1 after 28 days. Our results suggest that Notch signaling in the CA1 is activated in parallel with the increase of endogenous neural stem cells stimulated by ischemia, and that the attenuation of Notch signaling could induce more efficient differentiation of neural progenitors toward a neuronal lineage.

Abstract
Neutral pion transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra at midrapidity (|y| less than or approximately 0.35) were measured in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=22.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. Relative to pi_(0) yields in p+p collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions (N(coll) the pi_(0) yields for p(T) more than or approximately 2 GeV/c in central Cu+Cu collisions are suppressed at 62.4 and 200 GeV whereas an enhancement is observed at 22.4 GeV. A comparison with a jet-quenching model suggests that final state parton energy loss dominates in central Cu+Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV, while the enhancement at 22.4 GeV is consistent with nuclear modifications in the initial state alone.

Abstract
We retrospectively evaluated the surgical outcome after sleeve lobectomy and pneumonectomy with tracheobronchial reconstruction for lung cancer. From 1993 to 2008, 46 patients with primary lung cancer underwent these surgical procedures. Seventeen patients (37%) received induction therapy, 15 received chemotherapy, while chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy alone were received by one patient each. Sleeve lobectomy without carinal resection was performed in 41 patients. Carinal resection with 2 sleeve pneumonectomies was performed in 5 patients. There were no operative deaths. Bronchopleural fistula occurred in one patient, who required completion pneumonectomy. One patient presented local mucosal necrosis in the anastomotic site and was managed conservatively. Two patients had bronchial strictures as late complications and successfully dilated by a balloon using bronchoscopy. Overall 5-year and 10-year survival rates were 54% and 48%, respectively. No recurrence developed at any anastomotic site. The results showed that sleeve lobectomy and pneumonectomy with tracheobronchial reconstruction can be performed with low mortality and bronchial anastomotic complication rates. As well, local control of the tumor was satisfactory.

Abstract
Yields for J/psi production in Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt s_NN=200 GeV have been measured over the rapidity range |y|<2.2 and compared with results in p+p and Au+Au collisions at the same energy. The Cu+Cu data offer greatly improved precision over existing Au+Au data for J/psi production in collisions with small to intermediate numbers of participants, in the range where the quark-gluon plasma transition threshold is predicted to lie. Cold nuclear matter estimates based on ad hoc fits to d+Au data describe the Cu+Cu data up to N_part approximately 50, corresponding to a Bjorken energy density of at least 1.5 GeV/fm(3).
