Abstract
OBJECTIVE Violent behaviour has been associated with presence of certain mental disorders, most notably antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and schizophrenia, childhood abuse, and multiple brain abnormalities. This study examined for the first time, to the authors' knowledge, the role of psychosocial deprivation (PSD), including childhood physical and sexual abuse, in structural brain volumes of violent individuals with ASPD or schizophrenia. METHODS Fifty-six men (26 with ASPD or schizophrenia and a history of serious violence, 30 non-violent) underwent magnetic resonance imaging and were assessed on PSD. Stereological volumetric brain ratings were examined for group differences and their association with PSD ratings. PSD-brain associations were examined further using voxel-based-morphometry. RESULTS The findings revealed: reduced thalamic volume in psychosocially-deprived violent individuals, relative to non-deprived violent individuals and healthy controls; negative association between thalamic volume and abuse ratings (physical and sexual) in violent individuals; and trend-level negative associations between PSD and hippocampal and prefrontal volumes in non-violent individuals. The voxel-based-morphometry analysis detected a negative association between PSD and localised grey matter volumes in the left inferior frontal region across all individuals, and additionally in the left middle frontal and precentral gyri in non-violent individuals. CONCLUSIONS Violent mentally-disordered individuals with PSD, relative to those with no or minimal PSD, suffer from an additional brain deficit, i.e., reduced thalamic volume; this may affect sensory information processing, and have implications for management, of these individuals. PSD may have a stronger relationship with volumetric loss of stress-linked regions, namely the frontal cortex, in non-violent individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on the role of grass pollen on asthma emergency department (ED) presentations among children. None have examined whether a dose-response effect exists between grass pollen levels and these asthma exacerbations. OBJECTIVES To examine the association between increasing ambient levels of grass pollen and asthma ED presentations in children. To determine whether these associations are seen only after a thunderstorm, or whether grass pollen levels have a consistent influence on childhood asthma ED visits during the season. METHODS A short time series ecological study was conducted for asthma presentations to ED among children in Melbourne, Victoria, and grass pollen, meteorological and air quality measurements recorded during the selected 2003 period. A semi-parametric Poisson regression model was used to examine dose-response associations between daily grass pollen levels and mean daily ED attendance for asthma. RESULTS A smoothed plot suggested a dose-response association. As ambient grass pollen increased to about 19 grains/m(3) , the same day risk of childhood ED presentations also increased linearly (P < 0.001). Grass pollen levels were also associated with an increased risk in asthma ED presentations on the following day (lag 1, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION This is the first study to establish a clear relationship between increased risk of childhood asthma ED attendance and levels of ambient grass pollen below 20 grains/m(3) , independent of any impact of thunderstorm-associated asthma. These findings have important implications for patient care, such as asthma management programs that notify the general public regarding periods of high grass pollen exposure, as well as defining the timing of initiation of pollen immunotherapy.

A mouse model to study the alterations in haemostatic and inflammatory parameters induced by Lonomia achelous caterpillar haemolymph. Toxicon 2012; 59:547-54. Abstract
A mouse model was established to reproduce the haemorrhagic syndrome which occurs in humans after accidental contact with the hairs of the caterpillar Lonomia achelous (LA) and measures the haemostatic and inflammatory alterations that occur as a result of this contact. Mice were injected intradermally with different doses (0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 mg/animal) of L. achelous haemolymph (LAH). Haematological (haemoglobin, haematocrit, platelet count, differential leukocyte count), haemostatic (fibrinogen, plasminogen, factor XIII [FXIII], fibrinolytic activity) and inflammatory parameters (tumour necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α], nitric oxide [NO]) were measured at different times up to 48 h. C57BL/6 mice responded to LAH injection, in terms of these parameters, in a manner similar to that seen in humans, whereas the BALB/c mice were unresponsive. In C57BL/6 mice injected with LAH, time course measurements showed: a) a reduction in the haemoglobin, haematocrit, fibrinogen, FXIII and plasminogen levels, b) no effect on the platelet count and c) immediate leukocytosis and an increase in the fibrinolytic activity in plasma. An inflammatory response (TNF-α) was observed within 1 h post-injection, followed by a more persistent increase in serum NO. These findings suggest that C57BL/6 mice represent a useful model of the haemorrhagic syndrome observed in humans who have suffered contact with the caterpillar, permitting a deeper understanding of the role of the inflammatory response in the haematological and haemostatic manifestations of this syndrome.

J Med Econ 2012; 15:1192-200. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Specific symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including joint stiffness and functional disability, are most severe in the morning. 'Morning stiffness' has a negative impact on health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL); however, how HRQoL is correlated to morning stiffness duration is unknown. The objective of this study was to obtain population-based utility values associated with different durations of morning stiffness in RA. DESIGN AND METHODS The time-trade-off (TTO) approach was used to elicit utility values for four different health states (HS), which differed in morning stiffness duration. One hundred and nine members of the UK general public rated each HS in individual face-to-face interviews with trained investigators. TTO scores were converted into utility values. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores were obtained to validate TTO scores. RESULTS On a scale of 0 (death) to 1 (full health), a mean utility value of 0.45±0.29 was elicited for ∼3 h of morning stiffness (anchor HS), 0.50±0.28 for 2-3 h of morning stiffness (HS1), 0.61±0.25 for 1-2 h of morning stiffness (HS2) and 0.78±0.20 for <1 h of morning stiffness (HS3). The difference between each HS was statistically significant (p<0.01). Mean VAS utility scores followed the same trend. Utility incrementally increased with each HS associated with a shorter duration of morning stiffness. Limitations of this research include potential bias from the TTO method due to the discounting effect of time, scale compatibility, and loss aversion. CONCLUSIONS The UK population-based utility values show a reduction in morning stiffness duration in RA is associated with improved HRQoL. Despite the impact of morning stiffness on HRQoL, it is rarely evaluated and little is known as to how it is affected by current treatments. The results of this study can be applied in future cost-utility analyses of healthcare interventions which target an improvement in morning stiffness duration for RA patients.

Abstract
SUMMARY This study of 22 girls with Turner syndrome (TS) demonstrates a reduction in bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) at the femoral neck along with a reduction in cortical bone density at the radius (with sparing of trabecular bone). These findings may account for the increased fracture risk noted in this population. INTRODUCTION Increased fracture risk is a feature of TS; however, the reasons for this are unclear. Little is known regarding cortical and trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) in TS. We have addressed this by measurement of volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). METHODS We studied 22 females with TS and 21 females without TS; mean ages 12.7 and 12.9 years, respectively. Bone mass measurements were made by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine and femur and pQCT of the radius. BMAD was calculated from DXA values. We utilized published reference data to generate Z-scores for both populations. RESULTS The mean BMAD Z-score at the lumbar spine was not significantly different in individuals with TS compared to the controls. At the femoral neck, individuals with TS had a significantly lower BMAD Z-score compared to the controls (-1.32 vs. -0.14, p = 0.001). At the distal radius, total vBMD Z-score and trabecular vBMD Z-score were not significantly different between the TS group and controls. A significant reduction in cortical vBMD at the proximal radius was noted in the TS group however (-2.58 vs. -1.38, p = 0.02). There was also a trend towards reduced cortical thickness at this site in the TS group (Z-score -2.89 vs. -1.73, p = 0.08). DISCUSSION TS is associated with reduced BMAD at the femoral neck; pQCT data suggests that cortical density is reduced with sparing of trabecular bone. This differential of cortical and trabecular BMD may predispose to fracture.

Abstract
Studies of the evolution of a social trait often make ecological assumptions (of population structure, life history), and thus a trait can be studied many different times with different assumptions. Here, I consider a Moran model of continuous reproduction and use an inclusive fitness analysis to investigate the relationships between fecundity or survival selection and birth-death (BD) or death-birth (DB) demography on the evolution of a social trait. A simple symmetry obtains: fecundity (respectively survival) effects under BD behave the same as survival (respectively fecundity) effects under DB. When these results are specialized to a homogeneous population, greatly simplified conditions for a positive inclusive fitness effect are obtained in both a finite and an infinite population. The results are established using the elegant formalism of mathematical group theory and are illustrated with an example of a finite population arranged in a cycle with asymmetric offspring dispersal.

Abstract
Previous qualitative studies have revealed discrepancies between patients' and physicians' perceptions of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its treatment. Questionnaires were administered to 2795 patients with RA (756 from Europe; 2039 from the USA) to measure patients' perceptions regarding pain management in RA. Although the majority of patients reported their RA as somewhat-to-completely controlled, 75% of European and 82% of US patients reported their pain as moderate-to-severe in the previous 2 months. The majority of European (60%) and US (65%) patients reported dissatisfaction with their arthritis pain. Patients' pain levels corresponded with their disease severity. A higher percentage of patients who reported severe pain were being treated for depression than those who had moderate or mild pain. Patients in the USA rated pain relief as the top required benefit from their RA medication. A comprehensive examination of patients' perspectives regarding pain could lead to better patient care and pain management strategies.

Abstract
Long term trend analysis of bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil solution elemental fluxes from 12 years monitoring at 10 ICP Level II forest sites in the UK reveal coherent national chemical trends indicating recovery from sulphur deposition and acidification. Soil solution pH increased and sulphate and aluminium decreased at most sites. Trends in nitrogen were variable and dependant on its form. Dissolved organic nitrogen increased in bulk precipitation, throughfall and soil solution at most sites. Nitrate in soil solution declined at sites receiving high nitrogen deposition. Increase in soil dissolved organic carbon was detected - a response to pollution recovery, changes in soil temperature and/or increased microbial activity. An increase of sodium and chloride was evident - a possible result of more frequent storm events at exposed sites. The intensive and integrated nature of monitoring enables the relationships between climate/pollutant exposure and chemical/biological response in forestry to be explored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse associations between the clinical status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the gross domestic product (GDP) of their resident country. METHODS The Quantitative Standard Monitoring of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (QUEST-RA) cohort includes clinical and questionnaire data from 6004 patients who were seen in usual care at 70 rheumatology clinics in 25 countries as of April 2008, including 18 European countries. Demographic variables, clinical characteristics, RA disease activity measures, including the disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS28), and treatment-related variables were analysed according to GDP per capita, including 14 "high GDP" countries with GDP per capita greater than US$24,000 and 11 "low GDP" countries with GDP per capita less than US$11,000. RESULTS Disease activity DAS28 ranged between 3.1 and 6.0 among the 25 countries and was significantly associated with GDP (r = -0.78, 95% CI -0.56 to -0.90, r(2) = 61%). Disease activity levels differed substantially between "high GDP" and "low GDP" countries at much greater levels than according to whether patients were currently taking or not taking methotrexate, prednisone and/or biological agents. CONCLUSIONS The clinical status of patients with RA was correlated significantly with GDP among 25 mostly European countries according to all disease measures, associated only modestly with the current use of antirheumatic medications. The burden of arthritis appears substantially greater in "low GDP" than in "high GDP" countries. These findings may alert healthcare professionals and designers of health policy towards improving the clinical status of patients with RA in all countries.

Abstract
The Phoenix mission investigated patterned ground and weather in the northern arctic region of Mars for 5 months starting 25 May 2008 (solar longitude between 76.5 degrees and 148 degrees ). A shallow ice table was uncovered by the robotic arm in the center and edge of a nearby polygon at depths of 5 to 18 centimeters. In late summer, snowfall and frost blanketed the surface at night; H(2)O ice and vapor constantly interacted with the soil. The soil was alkaline (pH = 7.7) and contained CaCO(3), aqueous minerals, and salts up to several weight percent in the indurated surface soil. Their formation likely required the presence of water.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This evaluation was undertaken in 2005, in the African region, to better understand the reaching every district (RED) implementation process that provides a framework for strengthening immunization services at the district level. METHODS In June 2005, a convenience sample of five countries was selected to evaluate the implementation of RED. Evaluation teams consisting of key partners conducted site visits to the national, district and health facility levels using standardized qualitative questionnaires. RESULTS RED was implemented in a similar manner in all five countries, i.e. starting with training and micro-planning. All RED components were implemented to some degree in the countries. Common implementation factors included development of plans, expanding outreach services (defined as services provided in sites outside fixed immunization sites), planning of supervisory visits and efforts to link with communities and utilize community volunteers. Monitoring tools such as wall charts and maps were observed and reportedly used. CONCLUSIONS Evaluation of the RED implementation process provided evidence of improvement in delivery of routine immunization services. The RED framework should continue to be used to strengthen the immunization delivery system to meet continuing new demands, such as the introduction of new vaccines and integrated delivery of other child survival interventions.

Abstract
In 2007, JRC-IRMM began a series of atmospheric CO2 isotope measurements, with the focus on understanding instrumental effects, corrections as well as metrological aspects. The calibration approach at JRC-IRMM is based on use of a plain CO2 sample (working reference CO2) as a calibration carrier and CO2-air mixtures (in high-pressure cylinders) to determine the method-related correction under actual analytical conditions (another calibration carrier, in the same form as the samples). Although this approach differs from that in other laboratories, it does give a direct link to the primary reference NBS-19-CO2. It also helps to investigate the magnitude and nature for each of the instrumental corrections and allows for the quantification of the uncertainty introduced. Critical tests were focused on the instrumental corrections. It was confirmed that the use of non-symmetrical capillary crimping (an approach used here to deal with small samples) systematically modifies delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2), with a clear dependence on the amount of extracted CO2. However, the calibration of CO2-air mixtures required the use of the symmetrical dual-inlet mode. As a proof of our approach, we found that delta13C(CO2) on extracts from mixtures agreed (within 0.010 per thousand) with values obtained from the 'mother' CO2 used for the mixtures. It was further found that very low levels of hydrocarbons in the pumping systems and the isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) instrument itself were critical. The m/z 46 values (consequently the calculated delta18O(CO2) values) are affected by several other effects with traces of air co-trapped with frozen CO2 being the most critical. A careful cryo-distillation of the extracted CO2 is recommended. After extensive testing, optimisation, and routine automated use, the system was found to give precise data on air samples that can be traced with confidence to the primary standards. The typical total combined uncertainty in delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2) on the VPDB-CO2 scale, estimated on runs of CO2-air mixtures, is +/-0.040 per thousand and 0.060 per thousand (2-sigma values). Inter-comparison with MPI-BGC resulted in a scale discrepancy of a similar magnitude. Although the reason(s) for this discrepancy still need to be understood, this basically confirms the approach of using specifically prepared CO2-air mixtures as a calibration carrier, in order to achieve scale unification among laboratories. As important practical application and as a critical test, JRC-IRMM took part in the passenger aircraft-based global monitoring project CARIBIC (http://www.caribic-atmospheric.com). In this way, reliable CO2 isotope data for the tropopause region and the free troposphere were obtained. From June 2007 to January 2009, approximately 500 CARIBIC air samples have been analysed. Some flights demonstrated a compact correlation of both delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2) with respect to CO2 concentration, demonstrating mixing of tropospheric and stratospheric air masses. These excellent correlations provide an independent, realistic data quality check.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiologists often identify atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) during cardiac angiography. The importance of such 'incidental' ARAS (iARAS) is not known. The present study sought to describe renal perfusion using non-captopril (baseline) nuclear renograms in patients with iARAS, and to determine characteristics associated with a positive captopril renogram. METHODS Patients presenting for non-emergent coronary angiography between June 2001 and February 2006 were angiographically screened for iARAS. Those with >50% stenosis of one or both renal arteries were referred to nephrology and underwent nuclear renography. RESULTS 131 patients had renograms. The mean age was 73.2 +/-8.1 and median eGFR was 51.2 (40.0, 66.6) ml/min/1.73 m(2). 51% had evidence of reduced perfusion to one kidney, of which 13% were discordant with the angiographic lesion. 9% had positive captopril renograms. Captopril renogram positivity was associated with severe unilateral stenosis (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS In cardiac patients diagnosed with iARAS, the presence of known anatomic lesions did not correlate with captopril renogram positivity. Uncertainty remains as to whether nuclear renography is a poor functional test in this population, or the lesions are not functionally significant. These results lead us to question both the significance of such lesions, and the utility of conducting renograms in this population.

Abstract
A database with details of the geometry of metal sites in proteins has been set up. The data are derived from metalloprotein structures that are in the Protein Data Bank [PDB; Berman, Henrick, Nakamura & Markley (2006).Nucleic Acids Res.35, D301–D303] and have been determined at 2.5 Å resolution or better. The database contains all contacts within the crystal asymmetric unit considered to be chemical bonds to any of the metals Na, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn. The stored information includes PDB code, crystal data, resolution of structure determination, refinement program andRfactor, protein class (from PDB header), contact distances, atom names of metal and interacting atoms as they appear in the PDB, site occupancies,Bvalues, coordination numbers, information on coordination shapes, and metal–metal distances. This may be accessed by SQL queries, or by a user-friendly web interface which searches for contacts between specified types of atoms [for example Ca and carboxylate O of aspartate, Co and imidazole Nδ of histidine] or which delivers details of all the metal sites in a specified protein. The web interface allows graphical display of the metal site, on its own or within the whole protein molecule, and may be accessed at http://eduliss.bch.ed.ac.uk/MESPEUS/. Some applications are briefly described, including a study of the characteristics of Mg sites that bind adenosine triphosphate, the derivation of an average Mg—Ophosphatedistance and some problems that arise when average bond distances with high precision are required.
