In the title mol­ecule, C₃₇H₃₅N₃O₆, the pyrrolidine ring adopts a twist conformation and the piperidine ring is in a distorted boat conformation. One of the phenyl rings is disordered over two positions with occupancies of 0.54 (2) and 0.46 (2) and the ethyl carboxyl­ate group is also disordered over two orientations with occupancies of 0.75 (1) and 0.25 (1).

1-Dichloro-acetyl-r-2,c-6-bis-(4-methoxy-phen-yl)-t-3-methyl-piperidin-4-one

In the title compound, C(22)H(23)Cl(2)NO(4), the piperidine ring adopts a distorted boat conformation. The meth-oxy groups lie in the plane of the benzene rings to which they are attached. The benzene rings are oriented at angles of 84.3 (1) and 76.8 (1)° with respect to the best plane through the piperidine ring. The crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular C-H⋯O inter-actions.

1-Chloro-acetyl-3-isopropyl-r-2,c-6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one

In the title compound, C(22)H(24)ClNO(2), the piperidine ring adopts a distorted boat conformation. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 83.2 (1)°. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked into chains running along the b axis by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The Cl atom of the chloro-acetyl group is disordered over two positions with occupancies of 0.66 (2) and 0.34 (2).

(E)-3-(4-Bromo-phen-yl)-3-[3-(4-bromo-phen-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]prop-2-enal

There are two crystallographically independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C₁₈H₁₂Br₂N₂O. In each mol­ecule, one of the bromo­phenyl rings lies almost in the plane of pyrazole unit [dihedral angles of 5.8 (3)° in the first mol­ecule and and 5.1 (3)° in the second] while the other ring is approximately perpendicular to it [dihedral angles of 80.3 (3) and 76.5 (3)°]. The crystal packing shows inter­molecular C—H⋯O inter­actions. The crystal studied was a racemic twin.

1-Dichloro-acetyl-r-2,c-6-bis-(4-methoxy-phen-yl)-t-3,t-5-dimethyl-piperidin-4-one

In the title compound, C₂₃H₂₅Cl₂NO₄, the piperidine ring adopts a distorted boat conformation. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 54.8 (1)°. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are linked into a two-dimensional network parallel to the ab plane by C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

In the title compound, C₃₁H₂₄Cl₂N₂S₂, the pyrazole ring adopts planar conformation with a maximum deviation of 0.002 (2) Å. The chloro­phenyl rings are twisted out of the plane of the pyrazole ring by 75.1 (1) and 39.5 (1)°. The crystal packing is controlled by weak intermolecular C—H⋯π interactions.

Chloridobis(ethane-1,2-diamine)(4-methyl-aniline)cobalt(III) dichloride monohydrate

In the title compound, [CoCl(C(2)H(8)N(2))(2)(C(7)H(9)N)]Cl(2)·H(2)O, the Co(III) ion has a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment and is surrounded by four N atoms in an equatorial plane, with the other N and Cl atoms occupying the axial positions. The title compound, C(21)H(26)N(2)O(3), crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. In both independent mol-ecules, the diazepine ring adopts a chair conformation. In the crystal, the independent mol-ecules exist as N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded R(2) (2)(8) dimers which are linked via N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming tetra-mers. The tetra-mers are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. In one of the molecules in the asymmetric unit, the terminal C atom of the ethyl group is disordered over two positions with refined occupancies of 0.742 (4) and 0.258 (4).

Purification, crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of haemoglobin from ostrich (Struthio camelus)

Haemoglobin is a tetrameric protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues back to the lungs. The oxygen-binding properties of haemoglobin are regulated through the binding of allosteric effectors. The respiratory system of avian species is unique and complex in nature when compared with that of mammals. In avian species, inositol pentaphosphate (inositol-P(5)) is present in the erythrocytes of the adult and is thought to be the major factor responsible for the relatively high oxygen affinity of the whole blood. The ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a large flightless bird which contains inositol tetrakisphosphate (inositol-P(4)) in its erythrocytes and its whole blood oxygen affinity is higher. Efforts have been made to explore the structure-function relationship of ostrich haemoglobin. Ostrich haemoglobin was purified using ion-exchange chromatography. Haemoglobin crystals were grown by the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method using PEG 3350 as the precipitant in 50 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.2. Data were collected using a MAR345 image-plate detector system. The crystals of ostrich haemoglobin diffracted to 2.2 A resolution. They belonged to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with one whole biological molecule in the asymmetric unit; the unit-cell parameters were a = 80.93, b = 81.68, c = 102.05 A.

4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-6-methoxy-2,2′-bipyridine-5-carbonitrile

There are two independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C₁₈H₁₂ClN₃O. The two pyridine rings are almost coplanar [dihedral angles between the rings: 2.87 (15) and 5.36 (16)°] while the chloro­phenyl rings are twisted out of the plane of the adjacent bipyridine ring by 44.1 (1) and 43.8 (1)° in the two mol­ecules. The crystal packing is stabilized by C—H⋯N and C—H⋯Cl inter­actions.

4-(2,4-Dichloro-phen-yl)-6-(1H-indol-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine-5-carbonitrile

The title compound, C(25)H(14)Cl(2)N(4), crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The two pyridine rings are almost coplanar, making dihedral angles of 3.2 (1) and 8.6 (1)° in the two independent mol-ecules. The dichloro-phenyl and indole rings are twisted away from the bipyridine ring by 64.32 (5) and 18.46 (4)°, respectively in the first molecule and by 51.0 (1) and 27.99 (5)°, respectively in the second molecule. The crystal packing is stabilized by C-H⋯N, C-H⋯Cl, N-H⋯N and C-H⋯π inter-actions.

3'-Benz-yloxy-3-hydr-oxy-3,3'-bi-1H-indole-2,2'(3H,3'H)-dione monohydrate

In the title compound, C(23)H(18)N(2)O(4)·H(2)O, the two oxindole rings subtend a dihedral angle of 54.29 (5)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and C-H⋯π inter-actions.

4-(4-Bromo-phen-yl)-6-(1H-indol-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine-5-carbonitrile

In the title compound, C₂₅H₁₅BrN₄, the two pyridine rings lie in a common plane [r.m.s. deviation = 0.023 (2) Å], whereas the bromo­phenyl and indole rings are twisted away from this plane by 52.82 (12) and 28.02 (10)°, respectively. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter­molecular N—H⋯N inter­actions.

2-(1H-indol-3-ylcarbon-yl)acetonitrile

The title compound, C(11)H(8)N(2)O, crystallizes with two crystallographically independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit which are approximately perpendicular to each other [79.97 (6)°]. The indole ring system is planar [r.m.s. deviation = 0.010 (1) Å]. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular C-H⋯N and N-H⋯O inter-actions.

Ethyl 4′-ethenyl-2′-oxo-4-phenyl-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)spiro[pyrrolidine-3,3′-indoline]-5-carboxylate monohydrate
