Abstract
Objetivos: Estudiar los resultados obtenidos con la técnica de Chevallard, versión simplificada de la técnica de Zancolli, para corregir la deformidad de la mano en garra secundaria a una parálisis cubital.Material y método: Estudio retrospectivo (enero 2006-diciembre 2013) de 16 pacientes (16 manos) que fueron intervenidos quirúrgicamente por deformidad en garra de la mano secundaria a parálisis del nervio cubital. Siguiendo los criterios de Brand, los pacientes fueron evaluados a las 6 semanas, 3 meses, 6 meses y al año.Resultados: Los resultados al año de la intervención fueron: excelentes en el 18,75% (3 pacientes); buenos en el 75% (12 pacientes) y malos en el 6,25% (un paciente). Este último requirió una nueva intervención para solucionar la recidiva de la garra.Conclusión: La técnica simplificada de Zancolli, o técnica de Chevallard, permite corregir fácilmente la deformidad de la mano en garra secundaria a una parálisis cubital, no hipotecando una ulterior intervención en el caso de recidiva.

Abstract
CLINICAL CASE A 27-year-old woman with a history of nyctalopia and constriction of visual field of the right eye. The ophthalmological examination showed a visual field and electroretinogram that were compatible with unilateral retinitis pigmentosa (RP). After a one year follow-up, the unilateral condition remained. DISCUSSION Unilateral retinitis pigmentosa is a rare condition, with a frequency between 0.2%-5% of the RP. It mainly affects women and older age groups than bilateral RP. For a definitive diagnosis, it is necessary to have a funduscopy and electroretinogram (ERG) altered unilaterally, and exclude infectious, inflammatory, and vascular causes.

Abstract
Aims Actual resuscitation guidelines recommend 10 respirations per minute (rpm) for advanced pediatric life support. This respiratory rate (RR) is much lower than what is physiological for children. The aim of this study is to compare changes in ventilation, oxygenation, haemodynamics and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) rates with three RR. Methods An experimental model of asphyxial cardiac arrest (CA) in 46 piglets (around 9.5 kg) was performed. Resuscitation with three different RR (10, 20 and 30 rpm) was carried out. Haemodynamics and gasometrical data were obtained at 3, 9, 18 and 24 minutes after beginning of resuscitation. Measurements were compared between the three groups. Results No statistical differences were found in ROSC rate between the three RR (37.5%, 46.6% and 60% in the 10, 20 and 30 rpm group respectively P = 0.51). 20 and 30 rpm groups had lower PaCO2 values than 10 rpm group at 3 minutes (58 and 55 mmHg vs 75 mmHg P = 0.08). 30 rpm group had higher PaO2 (61 mmHg) at 3 minutes than 20 and 10 rpm groups (53 and 45 mmHg P = 0.05). No significant differences were found in haemodynamics or tissue perfusion between hyperventilated (PaCO2 <30 mmHg), normoventilated (30–50 mmHg) and hypoventilated (>50 mmHg) animals. PaO2 was significantly higher in hyperventilated (PaO2 153 mmHg) than in normoventilated (79 mmHg) and hypoventilated (47 mmHg) piglets (P<0.001). Conclusions Our study confirms the hypothesis that higher RR achieves better oxygenation and ventilation without affecting haemodynamics. A higher RR is associated but not significantly with better ROSC rates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A dimensional assessment model as a supplement to the diagnosis process could overcome the current pitfalls in classifying psychopathology in ethnic minorities. The aim of the study described herein was to examine a sample of Puerto Rican patients diagnosed with anxiety disorder in order to evaluate the psychometric properties of the specific scales that assess the following 3 domains: clinical symptoms, personality/trait, and affective style. METHODS 80 subjects were recruited and interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV to identify the presence of anxiety disorders. Following this, various questionnaires assessing each proposed domain were administered to the participants. Reliability and validity of these questionnaires were examined using Cronbach's alpha and exploratory factor analysis. The effect of the individual items of the questionnaires on the overall reliability and validity was assessed using factor scores component matrix. RESULTS Analyses revealed moderate to high reliability and validity scores within all 3 domains. The sample obtained moderate to high scores on the scales comprising clinical and personality/trait domains. CONCLUSION The use of self-report scales in accordance with the proposed dimensional framework may be an effective way to supplement categorical diagnoses within the Hispanic population represented by this sample.

Abstract
Sensory evaluation (SE) involves evoking, measuring and interpreting human responses to the properties of foods. Among these properties texture is an important one for food acceptability. Texture is mainly perceived through mastication, a process that changes food characteristics throughout time by comminuting and salivation. Electromyography (EMG) has emerged as a new tool in sensory evaluation mainly for assessing texture characteristics. Thus, it is interesting to analyze the knowledge so far generated and the procedures employed. Bipolar surface electrodes are placed on the four main masticatory muscles (masseter right-left and temporalis right-left) and their electric activity recorded during mastication. The signals need to be amplified and filtered, and afterwards their acquisition by a computer allows conditioning and analysis. The output is a series of bursts corresponding to the chews during mastication. EMG parameters include the area under the curve (linked to masticatory work) and voltage (linked to the force exerted) at different moments of the process. Many other parameters are derived from the recording and related to food texture characteristics. EMG allows the study of changes throughout the masticatory process, these changes in EMG parameters permit a better assessment of sensory characteristics than mechanical measurements. Nevertheless, close-fitting correlations have been found between sensorymechanical-EMG measurements. In the literature, texture assessment by using EMG includes many products like carrots, biscuits, cooked meat, cooked rice, cheese, etc., as well as different texture characteristics like tenderness, hardness, crunchiness, juiciness, among others. Nowadays, texture studies involving EMG are mainly linked to describing changes or differences in the signals, good descriptors of perceived differences. Nevertheless for quantifying purposes, in order to allow comparisons among authors, a first step should be undertaken to standardize EMG parameters definition and procedures used in SE.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study sought to determine if there is a relationship between the consumption of alcohol and tobacco and oral colonization by mutans streptococci and Candida species. Subjects were recruited from the University Dental Clinic of CEU Cardenal Herrera University (Moncada, Valencia). Information on alcohol and tobacco consumption was obtained by questionnaire. Individual stimulated saliva samples from 105 patients were obtained and selective media was used to isolate and quantify mutans streptococci and Candida spp. colony forming units per millilitre of saliva (CFU ml(-1) ). Samples were stratified by duration and quantity of alcohol and tobacco consumption. Alcohol consumption statistically significantly decreased oral carriage of mutans streptococci, whereas there was no effect on Candida albicans colonization levels. Tobacco users were found to harbour elevated levels of C. albicans; however, there was no observed effect on bacterial colonization by mutans streptococci. The carriage of other species investigated, such as Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis and lactobacilli, do not show a response to the consumption of the stimulants analysed. Microbial colonization of the oral cavity changes in a species-specific manner in response to dietary and social habits such as drinking alcohol and smoking. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY In this paper, we evaluate the effect of alcohol and tobacco consumption on key species of the oral microflora. Our results show species-specific changes in two major opportunistic pathogens, such as Candida albicans and mutans streptococci, whereas other members of oral microflora are not affected by the consumption of the stimulants studied. We believe this original paper will contribute to raise awareness among the dental community towards a more personalized oral health assessment, taking in consideration alcohol and tobacco consumption in the prevention of specific oral and systemic pathologies.

High Alt Med Biol. 17:336-341, 2016.-We evaluated the prevalence of sleep apnea (SA) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) at different altitudes. A total of 398 subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD), 144 subjects with atrial fibrillation (AF), and 292 controls (without CVD) were recruited in three cities at sea level, moderate altitude, and high altitude. All participants underwent polysomnography. Multinomial logistic regression, X2, and Hosmer and Lemeshow tests were used to determine interactions among CVD, SA, and altitude. Men and women with CVD at high altitude had a higher risk for SA than men and women living at lower altitudes. The highest risk of SA was observed in men with AF and men with CAD living at high altitude. Obstructive SA (OSA) prevalence was significantly increased in CVD subjects living at high altitude (OR: 5.52; p < 0.0001). Central SA (CSA) was more frequent in subjects with CVD than control group (OR: 2.44; p < 0.021). OSA was the most frequent type of SA in subjects with CVD and overweight subjects, and in control individuals with obesity or being overweight. Significant differences in the prevalence of SA associated with altitude and gender were noted in subjects with CAD and AF.

Abstract
Preclinical trials are essential to the development of scientific technologies. Remarkable molecular and cellular research has been done using small animal models. However, significant differences exist regarding the articular behavior between these models and humans. Thus, large animal models may be more appropriate to perform trials involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The aim of this work was to make a morphological (anatomic dissection and white light 3D scanning system), histological (TMJ in bloc was removed for histologic analysis) and biomechanical characterization (tension and compression tests) of sheep TMJ comparing the obtained results with human data. Results showed that sheep processus condylaris and fossa mandibularis are anatomically similar to the same human structures. TMJ disc has an elliptical perimeter, thinner in the center than in periphery. Peripheral area acts as a ring structure supporting the central zone. The disc cells display both fibroblast and chondrocyte-like morphology. Marginal area is formed by loose connective tissue, with some chondrocyte-like cells and collagen fibers in diverse orientations. Discs obtained a tensile modulus of 3.97±0.73MPa and 9.39±1.67MPa, for anteroposterior and mediolateral assessment. The TMJ discs presented a compressive modulus (E) of 446.41±5.16MPa and their maximum stress value (σmax) was 18.87±1.33MPa. Obtained results suggest that these animals should be considered as a prime model for TMJ research and procedural training. Further investigations in the field of oromaxillofacial surgery involving TMJ should consider sheep as a good animal model due to its resemblance of the same joint in humans.

Abstract
Since 1992, the Spanish and Portuguese-Speaking Working Group of the ISFG (GHEP-ISFG) has been organizing annual Intercomparison Exercises (IEs) coordinated by the Quality Service at the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF) from Madrid, aiming to provide proficiency tests for forensic DNA laboratories. Each annual exercise comprises a Basic (recently accredited under ISO/IEC 17043: 2010) and an Advanced Level, both including a kinship and a forensic module. Here, we show the results for both autosomal and sex-chromosomal STRs, and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in two samples included in the forensic modules, namely a mixture 2:1 (v/v) saliva/blood (M4) and a mixture 4:1 (v/v) saliva/semen (M8) out of the five items provided in the 2014 GHEP-ISFG IE. Discrepancies, other than typos or nomenclature errors (over the total allele calls), represented 6.5% (M4) and 4.7% (M8) for autosomal STRs, 15.4% (M4) and 7.8% (M8) for X-STRs, and 1.2% (M4) and 0.0% (M8) for Y-STRs. Drop-out and drop-in alleles were the main cause of errors, with laboratories using different criteria regarding inclusion of minor peaks and stutter bands. Commonly used commercial kits yielded different results for a micro-variant detected at locus D12S391. In addition, the analysis of electropherograms revealed that the proportions of the contributors detected in the mixtures varied among the participants. In regards to mtDNA analysis, besides important discrepancies in reporting heteroplasmies, there was no agreement for the results of sample M4. Thus, while some laboratories documented a single control region haplotype, a few reported unexpected profiles (suggesting contamination problems). For M8, most laboratories detected only the haplotype corresponding to the saliva. Although the GHEP-ISFG has already a large experience in IEs, the present multi-centric study revealed challenges that still exist related to DNA mixtures interpretation. Overall, the results emphasize the need for further research and training actions in order to improve the analysis of mixtures among the forensic practitioners.

Abstract
This paper discusses the use of standardized bibliographic metadata sets for the retrieval of software components. Their proven success, and the assumption that software components are a sort of dynamic document, leads to the assumption that it could be effective to adopt bibliographic metadata element sets for resource discovery of software components. Stemming from four sets, viz. the Dublin Core, EAD, ISAD(G) and MARC, a metadata element set for software components was constructed. The resulting set, an extended Dublin Core set for software components (XDCSC), implemented in XML, can be used for component retrieval and thus supports software reuse. A first test was performed with components of the BETADE research group. It demonstrates that the retrieval of software can be addressed in this way, XDC-SC is useful as a source of metadata for software components. XDC-SC could serve as a basis for a standard.

Abstract
Background The pressure-recording analytical method is a new semi-invasive method for cardiac output measurement (PRAM). There are no studies comparing this technique with femoral artery thermodilution (FATD) in an infant animal model. Methods A prospective study was performed using 25 immature Maryland pigs weighing 9.5 kg. Fifty-eight simultaneous measurements of cardiac index (CI) were made by FATD and PRAM at baseline and after return of spontaneous circulation. Differences, correlation, and concordance between both methods were analyzed. The ability of PRAM to track changes in CI was explored with a polar plot. Results Mean CI measurements were 4.5 L/min/m2 (95 % CI, 4.2–4.8 L/min/m2; coefficient of variation, 27 %) by FATD and 4.0 L/min/m2 (95 % CI, 3.6–4.3 L/min/m2; coefficient for variation, 37 %) by PRAM (difference, 0.5 L/min/m2; 95 % CI for the difference, 0.1–1.0 L/min/m2; p = 0.003; n = 58). No correlation between both methods was observed (r = 0.170, p = 0.20). Limits of agreement were −2.9 to 4.0 L/min/m2 (−69.9 to 84.9 %). Percentage error was 80.6 %. Only 26.1 % of data points lied within an absolute deviation of ±30° from the polar axis. Conclusions No correlation nor concordance between both methods was observed. Limits of agreement and percentage of error were high and clinically not acceptable. No concurrence between both methods in CI changes was observed. PRAM is not a useful method for measurement of the CI in this pediatric model of cardiac arrest.

Abstract
Food allergy and respiratory allergy are two frequently associated diseases and with an increasing prevalence. Several reports show the presence of respiratory symptoms in patients with food allergy, while certain foods may be related to the development or exacerbation of allergic rhinitis and asthma. The present update focuses on this relationship, revealing a pathogenic and clinical association between food and respiratory allergy. This association is even more intense when the food hypersensitivity is persistent or starts in the early years of life. Food allergy usually precedes respiratory allergy and may be a risk factor for allergic rhinitis and asthma, becoming a relevant clinical marker for severe atopic asthma. Furthermore, the presence of co-existing asthma may enhance life-threatening symptoms occurring during a food allergic reaction. Recommendations for dietary restrictions during pregnancy and breastfeeding to prevent the development of respiratory allergy are controversial and not supported by consistent scientific data. Current recommendations from medical societies propose exclusive breastfeeding during the first four months of life, with the introduction of solid food in the fourth to the seventh month period of life. A delayed introduction of solid food after this period may increase the risk of developing subsequent allergic conditions. Further studies are encouraged to avoid unjustified recommendations involving useless dietary restrictions.

Abstract
The intraoperative computer-assisted navigation technique has evolved and changed the way we approach certain complex cases in the vertebral pathologies. The main advantages of this technique are that it increases the accuracy of the procedure, reduces its morbidity and invasiveness, diminishes the radiation dose and improves surgical protocols. In addition to the transpedicular fixation, the navigation system is useful in a high variety of pathologies such as spinal decompression or tumor resection. In the present study, we show several cases where navigation is used intraoperatively in different pathologies and their clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Objective To design an experimental pediatric animal model of acute kidney injury induced by cisplatin. Methods Prospective comparative observational animal study in two different phases. Acute kidney injury was induced using three different doses of cisplatin (2, 3 and 5 mg/kg). The development of nephrotoxicity was assessed 2 to 4 days after cisplatin administration by estimating biochemical parameters, diuresis and renal morphology. Analytical values and renal morphology were compared between 15 piglets treated with cisplatin 3 mg/kg and 15 control piglets in the second phase of the study. Results 41 piglets were studied. The dose of 3 mg/kg administered 48 hours before the experience induced a significant increase in serum creatinine and urea without an increase in potassium levels. Piglets treated with cisplatin 3 mg/kg had significantly higher values of creatinine, urea, phosphate and amylase, less diuresis and lower values of potassium, sodium and bicarbonate than control piglets. Histological findings showed evidence of a dose-dependent increase in renal damage. Conclusions a dose of 3 mg/kg of cisplatin induces a significant alteration in renal function 48 hours after its administration, so it can be used as a pediatric animal model of non-oliguric acute kidney injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Haemorrhagic shock is frequent in paediatric trauma patients and after cardiac surgery, especially after cardiopulmonary bypass. It has demonstrated to be related to bad outcome. OBJECTIVES To evaluate changes on microcirculatory parameters during haemorrhagic shock and resuscitation in a paediatric animal model. To determine correlation between microcirculatory parameters and other variables routinely used in the monitoring of haemorrhagic shock. METHODS Experimental study on 17 Maryland pigs. Thirty minutes after haemorrhagic shock induction by controlled bleed animals were randomly assigned to three treatment groups receiving 0.9% normal saline, 5% albumin with 3% hypertonic saline, or 5% albumin with 3% hypertonic saline plus a bolus of terlipressin. Changes on microcirculation (perfused vessel density (PVD), microvascular blood flow (MFI) and heterogeneity index (HI)) were evaluated and compared with changes on macrocirculation and tisular perfusion parameters. RESULTS Shock altered microcirculation: PVD decreased from 13.5 to 12.3 mm mm(-2) (p=0.05), MFI decreased from 2.7 to 1.9 (p<0.001) and HI increased from 0.2 to 0.5 (p<0.001). After treatment, microcirculatory parameters returned to baseline (PVD 13.6 mm mm(-2) (p<0.05), MFI 2.6 (p<0.001) and HI 0.3 (p<0.05)). Microcirculatory parameters showed moderate correlation with other parameters of tissue perfusion. There were no differences between treatments. CONCLUSIONS Haemorrhagic shock causes important microcirculatory alterations, which are reversed after treatment. Microcirculation should be assessed during haemorrhagic shock providing additional information to guide resuscitation.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) plays a relevant role during cell death regulation in tumor cells. The overexpression of nitric oxide synthase type III (NOS-3) induces oxidative and nitrosative stress, p53 and cell death receptor expression and apoptosis in hepatoblastoma cells. S-nitrosylation of cell death receptor modulates apoptosis. Sorafenib is the unique recommended molecular-targeted drug for the treatment of patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. The present study was addressed to elucidate the potential role of NO during Sorafenib-induced cell death in HepG2 cells. We determined the intra- and extracellular NO concentration, cell death receptor expression and their S-nitrosylation modifications, and apoptotic signaling in Sorafenib-treated HepG2 cells. The effect of NO donors on above parameters has also been determined. Sorafenib induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells. However, low concentration of the drug (10nM) increased cell death receptor expression, as well as caspase-8 and -9 activation, but without activation of downstream apoptotic markers. In contrast, Sorafenib (10 µM) reduced upstream apoptotic parameters but increased caspase-3 activation and DNA fragmentation in HepG2 cells. The shift of cell death signaling pathway was associated with a reduction of S-nitrosylation of cell death receptors in Sorafenib-treated cells. The administration of NO donors increased S-nitrosylation of cell death receptors and overall induction of cell death markers in control and Sorafenib-treated cells. In conclusion, Sorafenib induced alteration of cell death receptor S-nitrosylation status which may have a relevant repercussion on cell death signaling in hepatoblastoma cells.

Abstract
The study of atmospheric aerosol load over the Iberian Peninsula (IP) under a climatological perspective is accomplished by means of PM10 and AOD440 nm measurements from EMEP and AERONET networks, respectively, in the period 2000-2013. The PM10 annual cycles in five Iberian sectors show a main maximum in summer and a secondary maximum in spring, which is only observed in the southern area for the AOD climatology. The characteristics of PM10-AOD annual cycles of each geographical sector are explained by the different climatology of the air mass origins and their apportioning. The two magnitudes are correlated with a factor ranging between 20 and 90 depending on the sector. The temporal evolution of the aerosol load has shown a notable decrease in the IP since the 1980s. Statistically significant trends are obtained in the Northeastern sector with a reduction of 26% (period 1985-2000) for the total suspended particles, which continues for the PM10 data with a value of 35% per decade (2001-2013), and also in the whole column, 61% per decade in the AOD440 nm (2004-2013).
