Abstract
In this study, the expression of DNA excision repair cross-complementing gene 1 (ERCC1) in local advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma has been correlated with the efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy. A total of 76 patients diagnosed with undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed by nasopharyngeal biopsy and undergoing single-agent cisplatin chemotherapy (80 mg/m(2)) with concurrent radiotherapy (on the first, twenty-second, and forty-third day, 5 times per week, mean dose 74 Gy, range 70-78 Gy) at the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between January and December 2010 were included. After chemoradiotherapy, outcomes and long-term survival were evaluated. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect expression of ERCC1 protein in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The relationship between the expression of ERCC1 and efficacy of concurrent chemoradiotherapy and long-term survival were analyzed. ERCC1 was expressed in 42.1% of cases. The expression of ERCC1 was correlated with T stage and clinical staging (P < 0.05), but not with gender, age, or N stage. The response rate in the ERCC1-positive and ERCC1-negative groups was 75.0% and 97.7%, respectively (P < 0.05). In the 72 cases with follow-up available, 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 91.0, 83.3, and 79.0%; they were 92.4, 87.8, 80.5%, respectively, in the ERCC1-positive group, and 87.9, 77.4, 77.4%, respectively, in the ERCC1-negative group. The expression of ERCC1 may be a sensitive prognostic indicator of concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
After the discovery of stripelike order in lanthanum-based copper oxide superconductors, charge-ordering instabilities were observed in all cuprate families. However, it has proven difficult to distinguish between unidirectional (stripes) and bidirectional (checkerboard) charge order in yttrium- and bismuth-based materials. We used resonant x-ray scattering to measure the two-dimensional structure factor in the superconductor YBa2Cu3O(6+y) in reciprocal space. Our data reveal the presence of charge stripe order (i.e., locally unidirectional density waves), which may represent the true microscopic nature of charge modulation in cuprates. At the same time, we find that the well-established competition between charge order and superconductivity is stronger for charge correlations across the stripes than along them, which provides additional evidence for the intrinsic unidirectional nature of the charge order.

Abstract
In underdoped cuprate superconductors, the Fermi surface undergoes a reconstruction that produces a small electron pocket, but whether there is another, as yet, undetected portion to the Fermi surface is unknown. Establishing the complete topology of the Fermi surface is key to identifying the mechanism responsible for its reconstruction. Here we report evidence for a second Fermi pocket in underdoped YBa2Cu3Oy, detected as a small quantum oscillation frequency in the thermoelectric response and in the c-axis resistance. The field-angle dependence of the frequency shows that it is a distinct Fermi surface, and the normal-state thermopower requires it to be a hole pocket. A Fermi surface consisting of one electron pocket and two hole pockets with the measured areas and masses is consistent with a Fermi-surface reconstruction by the charge-density-wave order observed in YBa2Cu3Oy, provided other parts of the reconstructed Fermi surface are removed by a separate mechanism, possibly the pseudogap.

Abstract
Membrane damage as a result of oxidative stress is quantified using digital image heterogeneity analysis of single giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) composed of soy phosphatidylcholine (PC), which were found to undergo budding when containing chlorophyll a (Chla) as photosensitizer in the lipid bilayer. Based on digital image heterogeneity analysis, a dimensionless scalar parameter "entropy" for the budding process was found to change linearly during an initial budding stage. Photo-induced peroxidation of PC to form linoleoyl hydroperoxides, further leading to domains of higher polarities in GUVs, was suggested to initiate the budding process. The effect on budding process of GUVs was suggested for use in assays for evaluation of potential protectors of lipid bilayer integrity under oxidative stress, and "entropy" seemed to be a valid descriptor of such membranal integrity. The one-step procedure for quantification of prooxidative effects and antioxidative protection provided by drug candidates and potential food ingredients in membranes could be easily automated for direct measurement of oxidative and antioxidative effects on cellular integrity.

Abstract
Giant unilamellar vesicles of soy phosphatidylcholine are found to undergo budding when sensitized with chlorophyll a ([phosphatidylcholine] : [chlorophyll a] = 1500 : 1) under light irradiation (400-440 nm, 16 mW mm(-2)). 'Entropy' as a dimensionless image heterogeneity measurement is found to increase linearly with time during an initial budding process. For β-carotene addition ([phosphatidylcholine] : [β-carotene] = 500 : 1), a lag phase of 23 s is observed, followed by a budding process at an initial rate lowered by a factor of 3.8, whereas resveratrol ([phosphatidylcholine] : [resveratrol] = 500 : 1) has little if any protective effect against budding. However, resveratrol, when combined with β-carotene, is found to further reduce the initial budding rate by a total factor of 4.7, exhibiting synergistic antioxidation effects. It is also interesting that β-carotene alone determines the lag phase for the initiation of budding, while resveratrol supports β-carotene in reducing the rate of the budding process following the lag phase; however, it alone has no observable effect on the lag phase. Resveratrol is suggested to regenerate β-carotene following its sacrificial protection of unsaturated lipids from oxidative stress, modeling the synergistic effects in cell membranes by combinations of dietary antioxidants.

Abstract
Aqueous solubility of calcium l-lactate, calcium d-gluconate, and calcium d-lactobionate increases with temperature (10-30 °C investigated), most significantly for the least soluble d-gluconate, while the calcium ion activity of the saturated solutions decreases with temperature, as measured electrochemically, most significantly for the most soluble d-lactobionate. This unusual behavior is discussed in relation to dairy processing and explained by endothermic binding of calcium to hydroxycarboxylate anions determined to have ΔH°ass = (31 ± 3) kJ·mol(-1) for l-lactate, (34 ± 2) kJ·mol(-1) for d-gluconate, and (29 ± 3) kJ·mol(-1) for d-lactobionate in 1:1 complexes with thermodynamic binding constants at 25 °C of Kass = 49 (l-lactate), 88 (d-gluconate), and 140 (d-lactobionate). Quantum mechanical calculations within density functional theory (DFT) confirm the ordering of strength of binding. The complex formation is entropy driven with ΔS°ass > 0, resulting in decreasing calcium ion activity in aqueous solutions for increasing temperature, even for the saturated solutions despite increasing solubility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a common type of neuropathic pain occurring after resolution of herpes zoster rash. Although gabapentin is a widely used treatment, some disagreements exist about its efficacy and safety. Meta-analysis was performed to better evaluate the efficacy and safety of gabapentin for management of PHN. METHODS Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of gabapentin to treat PHN were identified by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL databases. Searches were restricted to studies published in English. RESULTS Seven trials involving a total of 2039 participants were identified. Pooled analysis showed that gabapentin reduced PHN-related pain significantly more than placebo (mean difference, MD=-0.89, 95% CI -1.58 to -0.18, P<0.001). Gabapentin reduced pain below baseline by at least 50% in significantly more patients than did placebo (RR=1.59, 95% CI 1.35 to 1.88, P<0.001). Gabapentin was significantly more likely than placebo to lead patients to rate their global impression of change as "much improved" or "very much improved" (RR=1.82, 95% CI 1.41 to 2.35, P=0.003). Gabapentin also improved sleep quality significantly more than did placebo (MD=-0.62, 95% CI -0.67 to -0.57, P<0.001). On the other hand, patients given gabapentin were significantly more likely to experience dizziness, somnolence, peripheral edema, ataxia or gait disturbance and diarrhea. Subgroup analysis on formulation of gabapentin showed that gabapentin enacarbil had similar efficacy of pain relief with other formulations while it may be superior to others in term of compliance and safety. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicates that gabapentin is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for patients with PHN.

Abstract
Solution-phase conformations and charge photogeneration dynamics of a pair of low-bandgap copolymers based on benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b(')]dithiophene (BDT) and thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TT), differed by the respective carbonyl (-C) and ester (-E) substituents at the TT units, were comparatively investigated by using near-infrared time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy at 25 °C and 120 °C. Steady-state and TA spectroscopic results corroborated by quantum chemical analyses prove that both PBDTTT-C and PBDTTT-E in chlorobenzene solutions are self-aggregated; however, the former bears a relatively higher packing order. Specifically, PBDTTT-C aggregates with more π-π stacked domains, whereas PBDTTT-E does with more random coils interacting strongly at the chain intersections. At 25 °C, the copolymers exhibit comparable exciton lifetimes (~1 ns) and fluorescence quantum yields (~2%), but distinctly different charge photogeneration dynamics: PBDTTT-C on photoexcitation gives rise to a branching ratio of charge separated (CS) over charge transfer (CT) states more than 20% higher than PBDTTT-E does, correlating with their photovoltaic performance. Temperature and excitation-wavelength dependent exciton∕charge dynamics suggest that the CT states localize at the chain intersections that are survivable up to 120 °C, and that the excitons and the CS states inhabit the stretched strands and the also thermally robust orderly stacked domains. The stable self-aggregation structures and the associated primary charge dynamics of the PBDTTT copolymers in solutions are suggested to impact intimately on the morphologies and the charge photogeneration efficiency of the solid-state photoactive layers.

Abstract
The characteristic absorption spectra of three kinds of phases, the isolated, ordered, and disordered phases, in a solvent-vapor annealed poly(3-hexylthiophene)/[6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) blend film were studied by means of spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy (TAS). The results reveal that the content of three phases are 12 % isolated, 37 % ordered, and 51 % disordered for the annealed P3HT neat film, and 25 % isolated, 31 % ordered, and 44 % disordered for the annealed P3HT/PCBM blend film. The vertical distribution of the different phases in the blend film was studied by SEC, and the results show that the ordered and isolated phases are mainly distributed in the top and in the bottom of the annealed films, respectively, while the disordered phase is mainly distributed in the middle and the bottom of the films.

Abstract
In the quest to increase the critical temperature Tc of cuprate superconductors, it is essential to identify the factors that limit the strength of superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2 is a fundamental measure of that strength, yet there is no agreement on its magnitude and doping dependence in cuprate superconductors. Here we show that the thermal conductivity can be used to directly detect Hc2 in the cuprates YBa2Cu3Oy, YBa2Cu4O8 and Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ, allowing us to map out Hc2 across the doping phase diagram. It exhibits two peaks, each located at a critical point where the Fermi surface of YBa2Cu3Oy is known to undergo a transformation. Below the higher critical point, the condensation energy, obtained directly from Hc2, suffers a sudden 20-fold collapse. This reveals that phase competition-associated with Fermi-surface reconstruction and charge-density-wave order-is a key limiting factor in the superconductivity of cuprates.

Abstract
This paper presents design of a climbing robot for inspection of glass curtain walls. The double-chamber structure enables the robot to climb over grooves on the glasses. In order to reduce the weight, both number and shape of the chambers are specially considered, and the pressure structure is optimized by FEA method. The statics models of different adsorption situations are also analyzed and deduced for the operational safety. In addition, design of the working arm and the wireless control system are introduced in detail. Finally, experiments of the robot are illustrated, including adsorption on different surfaces, vertical and horizontal groove-crossing as well as glass inspection. These experiments fully prove the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the climbing performance of the robot.

Abstract
Esterification by β-apo-14'-carotenoic acid was found to have opposite effects on antioxidant activity of quercetin (at B4', B3' hydroxyl) as of daidzein (at A7 hydroxyl) in phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The daidzein ester had increased activity, while quercetin had a significant decreased activity. Quantum mechanical calculations using density function theory (DFT) indicate a modest decrease in bond dissociation enthalpy, BDE, for (weakest) hydrogen-oxygen phenolic bond in daidzein from 368.4 kJ · mol(- 1) to 367.7 kJ · mol(- 1) compared to a significant increase in quercetin from 329.5 kJ · mol(- 1) to 356.6 kJ · mol(- 1) upon derivatization. These opposite changes in tendency for hydrogen atom transfer from phenolic groups to lipid radicals combined with an increase in A-to-B dihedral angle from 0.0° to 36.4° and in dipole moment from 0.40 D to 6.01 D for quercetin upon derivatization, while less significant for daidzein (36.4°-36.7° and 3.26 D-7.87 D, respectively), together provide a rationale for the opposite effect of esterification on antioxidation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of prolonged feeding of dietary nucleotides (NTs), and to clarify the effect of NTs on life extension of Sprague-Dawley rats. METHODS There were 50 Sprague-Dawley rats in each group (male:female ratio=1:1), which were fed diets supplemented with NTs at concentrations of 0%, 0.01%, 0.04%, 0.16% and 0.64% (wt/wt) from the age of 4 weeks until natural death. We investigated the moribundity and mortality, survival time, spontaneous tumor incidence, and serum oxidative status. RESULTS NTs have significantly influence body weight of first 3 month old and food consumption of male rats throughout the life span; it did dose-dependently inhibit the age-related decrease in the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the age-related increase in the levels of lipid peroxidation product in both sexes. NTs notably increased the mean life span, and the maximal life span. Compared to the control group, the incidence of death from tumors was decreased in NTs groups of both sexes. CONCLUSIONS Long-term feeding of NTs could dose-dependently increase life span in Sprague-Dawley rats, especially, the tumor-bearing ones. Moreover, the antioxidative property of NTs may be responsible for the increased life span.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the impact of the prototype prolapse mesh Gynemesh PS with that of two new-generation lower stiffness meshes, UltraPro and SmartMesh, on vaginal morphology and structural composition. DESIGN A mechanistic study employing a nonhuman primate model. SETTING Magee-Womens Research Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. POPULATION Parous rhesus macaques, with similar age, weight, parity and Pelvic Organ Prolapse-Questionnaire scores. METHODS Following Institutional Animal Care Use Committee approval, 50 rhesus macaques were implanted with Gynemesh PS (n = 12), UltraPro with its blue line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of vagina (n = 10), UltraPro with its blue line parallel to the longitudinal axis of vagina (n = 8) or SmartMesh (n = 8) via sacrocolpopexy following hysterectomy. Sham-operated animals (n = 12) served as controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The mesh-vagina complex was removed after 12 weeks and analysed for histomorphology, in situ cell apoptosis, total collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycan content and total collagenase activity. Appropriate statistics and correlation analyses were performed accordingly. RESULTS Relative to sham and the two lower stiffness meshes, Gynemesh PS had the greatest negative impact on vaginal histomorphology and composition. Compared with sham, implantation with Gynemesh PS caused substantial thinning of the smooth muscle layer (1557 ± 499 μm versus 866 ± 210 μm, P = 0.02), increased apoptosis particularly in the area of the mesh fibres (P = 0.01), decreased collagen and elastin content (20%, P = 0.03 and 43%, P = 0.02, respectively) and increased total collagenase activity (135%, P = 0.01). Glycosaminoglycan, a marker of tissue injury, was highest with Gynemesh PS compared with sham and other meshes (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION Mesh implantation with the stiffer mesh Gynemesh PS induced a maladaptive remodelling response consistent with vaginal degeneration.

Abstract
The Ubiquitin--specific protease 22 (USP22) is a new putative cancer stem cell marker, which plays a significant role in tumorigenesis and cell--cycle progression. However, little is known about the impact of USP22 knock--down on the growth of human hepatoma cell lines. In this study, elevated expression of USP22 was observed in the human HepG2 hepatic cancer cell line compared to the normal human hepatocyte Chang liver cell line. Subsequently, we used siRNA specifically suppressing expression of USP22 and observed that the knock--down of USP22 could effectively induce cell cycle arrest and inhibit HepG2 cell proliferation. Furthermore, our results showed that USP22 deletion caused down--regulation of cyclin D2 expression and up--regulation of p15 and p21 expression. Collectively, Our findings indicate that USP22 may be responsible for HepG2 cell growth and USP22 regulates the cell cycle via the c--Myc/cyclin D2 pathway and down--regulating p15 and p21 expression in HepG2 cell.

Abstract
Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs of diameter 5-25 μm) of soy phosphatidylcholine (PC), resistant to intense light exposure (400-440 nm, ~15 mW·mm(-2)), underwent budding when containing chlorophyll a (Chla) in the lipid bilayer ([PC]:[Chla] = 1500:1). On the basis of image heterogeneity analysis using inverted microscopy, a dimensionless entropy parameter for the budding process was shown to increase linearly during an initial budding process. Lipophilic β-carotene (β-Car, [PC]:[β-Car] = 500:1) reduced the initial budding rate by a factor of 2.4, while the hydrophilic glycoside rutin ([PC]:[rutin] = 500:1) had no effect. Chla photosensitized oxidation of PC to form linoleoyl hydroperoxides, further leading to domains of higher polarity in the vesicles, is suggested to trigger budding. The average dipole moment (μ) of linoleic acid hydroperoxides was calculated using density functional theory (DFT) to have the value of 2.84 D, while unoxidized linoleic acid has μ = 1.86 D. β-Carotene as a lipophilic antioxidant and singlet-oxygen quencher seems to hamper oxidation in the lipid bilayers and delay budding in contrast to rutin located in the aqueous phase. The effect on budding of GUVs as a detrimental process for membranes is suggested for use in assays for evaluation of potential protectors of cellular integrity and functions under oxidative stress.

Abstract
In the reaction between trans-resveratrol (resveratrol) and the hydroxyl radical, kinetic product control leads to a short-lived hydroxyl radical adduct with an absorption maximum at 420 nm and a lifetime of 0.21 ± 0.01 μs (anaerobic acetonitrile at 25 °C) as shown by laser flash photolysis using N-hydroxypyridine-2(1H)-thione (N-HPT) as a "photo-Fenton" reagent. The transient spectra of the radical adduct are in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing an absorption maximum at 442 or 422 nm for C2 and C6 hydroxyl adducts, respectively, and showing the lowest energy for the transition state leading to the C2 adduct compared to other radical products. From this initial product, the relative long-lived 4'-phenoxyl radical of resveratrol (τ = 9.9 ± 0.9 μs) with an absorption maximum at 390 nm is formed in a process with a time constant (τ = 0.21 ± 0.01 μs) similar to the decay constant for the C2 hydroxyl adduct (or a C2/C6 hydroxyl adduct mixture) and in agreement with thermodynamics identifying this product as the most stable resveratrol radical. The hydroxyl radical adduct to phenoxyl radical conversion with concomitant water dissociation has a rate constant of 5 × 10(6) s(-1) and may occur by intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer or by stepwise proton-assisted electron transfer. Photolysis of N-HPT also leads to a thiyl radical which adds to resveratrol in a parallel reaction forming a sulfur radical adduct with a lifetime of 0.28 ± 0.04 μs and an absorption maximum at 483 nm.
