Abstract
Genetic algorithms offer a powerful search method for a variety of learning tasks, and there are different approaches in which they have been applied to learning processes. Structural learning algorithm on vague environment (SLAVE) is a genetic learning algorithm that uses the iterative approach to learn fuzzy rules. SLAVE can select the relevant features of the domain, but when working with large databases the search space is too large and the running time can sometimes be excessive. We propose to improve SLAVE by including a feature selection model in which the genetic algorithm works with individuals (representing individual rules) composed of two structures: one structure representing the relevance status of the involved variables in the rule, the other one representing the assignments variable/value. For this general representation, we study two alternatives depending on the information coded in the first structure. When compared with the initial algorithm, this new approach of SLAVE reduces the number of rules, simplifies the structure of the rules and improves the total accuracy.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: A substantial number of small studies, most retrospective, have shown variable degrees of discordance in HER2, ER and PR expression between primary and metastatic breast cancer. This may have prognostic and therapeutic implications. These discordances could be triggered by tumor somatic mutations, intratumoral heterogeneity, or technical issues with receptor assayes. In this prospective study, we centrally analyzed and determined the changes in receptor status between primary tumor and corresponding metastases.
Methods: In 32 Spanish hospitals, patients where primary tumor sample was available, were prospectively included prior to the biopsy of the presumably metastatic lesion. Determinations of ER and PR status (assessed by immuhistochemistry [IHC]) and HER2 status (IHC and FISH) were centrally and blindly performed in both primary tumor and metastases. Concordance rate between local laboratories and central laboratory receptor determinations were analyzed. We also determined whether the biopsy results modified the oncologist initial treatment strategy.
Results: A total of 236 patients were included. To today, 183 paired cases were centrally evaluated. Patients in first recurrence were 65% and the mean age was 57.2 years. Biopsy samples were taken from locoregional recurrence (25%), liver metastases (28%), bone metastases (11%), lung metastases (7%) and other locations (29%). In 6.6% of the biopsies normal tissue, benign lesion or secondary malignant neoplasm were seen. The changes in HER2, ER and PR were 17%, 26% and 35% (local lab) and 4%, 12% and 26% (central lab), respectively; and were independent of treatment given or biopsy localization. Concordance rate in HER2, ER and PR between local and central determination were 83%, 92% and 78% (kappa index 0.58, 0.80 and 0.55), respectively. Changes in receptor status lead to a modification in medical management in 16% of patients.
Conclusions: A remarkable discordance in receptor status, especially in the hormonal receptors, was found between primary tumor and metastases that implies a change in medical management in 16% of patients. These discordances were reduced but remained after performing in a high-quality central laboratory, so that they could only be partly explained by technical discrepancies in receptor assessments.

Abstract
Long-term studies have revealed that the structure and dynamics of many tropical forests are changing, but the causes and consequences of these changes remain debated. To learn more about the forces driving changes within tropical forests, we investigated shifts in tree species composition over the past 25 years within the 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama, and examined how observed patterns relate to predictions of (1) random population fluctuations, (2) carbon fertilization, (3) succession from past disturbance, (4) recovery from an extreme El Niño drought at the start of the study period, and (5) long-term climate change. We found that there have been consistent and directional changes in the tree species composition. These shifts have led to increased relative representations of drought-tolerant species as determined by the species' occurrence both across a gradient of soil moisture within BCI and across a wider precipitation gradient from a dry forest near the Pacific coast of Panama to a wet forest near its Caribbean coast. These nonrandom changes cannot be explained by stochastic fluctuations or carbon fertilization. They may be the legacy of the El Niño drought, or alternatively, potentially reflect increased aridity due to long-term climate change. By investigating compositional changes, we increased not only our understanding of the ecology of tropical forests and their responses to large-scale disturbances, but also our ability to predict how future global change will impact some of the critical services provided by these important ecosystems.

Abstract
Current clinical trials of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted therapies are mostly guided by a classical approach coming from the cytotoxic paradigm. The predominant view is that the efficacy of EGFR antagonists correlates with skin rash toxicity and induction of objective clinical response. Clinical benefit from EGFR-targeted therapies is well documented; however, chronic use in advanced cancer patients has been limited due to cumulative and chemotherapy-enhanced toxicity. Here we analyze different pieces of data from mechanistic and clinical studies with the anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody Nimotuzumab, which provides several clues to understand how this antibody may induce a biological control of tumor growth while keeping a low toxicity profile. Based on these results and the current state of the art on EGFR-targeted therapies, we discuss the need to evaluate new therapeutic approaches using anti-EGFR agents, which would have the potential of transforming advanced cancer into a long-term controlled chronic disease.

AbstractSurface treatment is a key technological parameter in the microelectronics technology and especially for SiC devices since high temperatures must be used for implanted impurities annealing and crystal damage recovery. In this work we take profit of a novel fine polishing process developed by NOVASIC to improve the electrical characteristics of Boron and Aluminium implanted Schottky diodes, which are surface quality highly sensitive devices. The mentioned fine polishing process allows to remove a layer thickness of 100nm to 3000nm on the surface of a processed SiC wafer, reducing the surface roughness to RMS of 1Å. The impact of this process on the electrical properties of the samples shows a general improvement of characteristics reproducibility, reduction of leakage current and improvement of breakdown of Boron implanted diodes.

Abstract
Increased levels of NeuGc-containing gangliosides have been described in human breast cancer. A controlled Phase II clinical trial was conducted in patients with metastatic breast cancer to evaluate immunogenicity, safety and to identify evidences of biological activity of a cancer vaccine composed by NeuGcGM3 in a proteoliposome of Neisseria meningitidis together with Montanide ISA 51 as adjuvant. After first line chemotherapy, 79 women were randomized 1:1 to receive the vaccine candidate or best supportive care. All patients achieved at least stable disease to the first line therapy for the metastatic condition. Treatment consisted on 5 vaccine doses every 2 weeks and then, monthly re-immunization to complete 15 doses. Vaccination with the NeuGcGM3 based vaccine was safe and the most frequent adverse events consisted on injection site reactions, fever, arthralgia and chills. The vaccine was immunogenic and a sustained increase of both IgG and IgM antibody titters against NGcGM3 was observed after the second vaccination month. Antibodies were able to recognize the NeuGcGM3(+) murine tumor cell line L1210 and the myeloma cell line P3X63. Humoral response was specific since vaccination did not result in Neu-Acetyl GM3 or GM2-antibody response. Hyperimmune sera from vaccinated patients were able to prevent the NeuGcGM3 mediated CD4 down-modulation on T lymphocytes. In the intent to treat analysis, there was a trend toward a survival advantage for the vaccine group and this effect was significant for women bearing non-visceral metastasis. Two phase III clinical studies with this vaccine candidate are ongoing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The main objective of this study was to determine whether fetal thymic measurements could be obtained in twins, with a secondary goal to determine whether thymic measurements from uncomplicated singleton and twin pregnancies are comparable. METHODS The transverse diameter and perimeter of the fetal thymus were measured prospectively in 678 singleton and 56 twin pregnancies, and their relationships with gestational age were determined and compared between groups. RESULTS Thymic measurements were possible in 757 (95.8%) of the 790 fetuses. Measurements were not possible in 19 of 678 singletons (2.8%) and in 14 of the 112 (12.5%) twins (P < 0.001). After construction of nomograms for the transverse diameter and perimeter of the fetal thymus, similar measurements were noted for singletons and twins. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that sonographic measurements of the thymus are feasible in twin pregnancies and that, in uncomplicated pregnancies, these measurements are similar to those noted for singletons. These findings pave the way for future studies aimed at determining the clinical utility of thymic measurements in complicated singleton and twin pregnancies.

Abstract
The assembly of DNA barcode libraries is particularly relevant within species-rich natural communities for which accurate species identifications will enable detailed ecological forensic studies. In addition, well-resolved molecular phylogenies derived from these DNA barcode sequences have the potential to improve investigations of the mechanisms underlying community assembly and functional trait evolution. To date, no studies have effectively applied DNA barcodes sensu strictu in this manner. In this report, we demonstrate that a three-locus DNA barcode when applied to 296 species of woody trees, shrubs, and palms found within the 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama, resulted in >98% correct identifications. These DNA barcode sequences are also used to reconstruct a robust community phylogeny employing a supermatrix method for 281 of the 296 plant species in the plot. The three-locus barcode data were sufficient to reliably reconstruct evolutionary relationships among the plant taxa in the plot that are congruent with the broadly accepted phylogeny of flowering plants (APG II). Earlier work on the phylogenetic structure of the BCI forest dynamics plot employing less resolved phylogenies reveals significant differences in evolutionary and ecological inferences compared with our data and suggests that unresolved community phylogenies may have increased type I and type II errors. These results illustrate how highly resolved phylogenies based on DNA barcode sequence data will enhance research focused on the interface between community ecology and evolution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To look for predictors in the clinical records of orders for "limitation of life sustaining treatment" (LLST) or "do not attempt resuscitation" (DNAR) in hospitalized elders and to assess the relationship between the presence of these orders and the quality of end-of-life (EOL) care. DESIGN Retrospective clinical record review. SETTING Inpatients of an inner city elderly acute care unit (EACU) in Spain. PARTICIPANTS Of 103 hospitalized patients who died in the EACU during one year, 90 dying an expected death either from acute or chronic disease were included. MEASUREMENTS Demographic, functional, cognitive, clinical, and end-of-life (EOL) parameters. The influence of identifying closeness to death and the number of LLST suborders on the quality of EOL-management were considered simultaneously using structural equation modelling with LISREL 8.30 software. RESULTS LLST and specific DNAR orders were registered in 91.1% and 83.3% of patients, respectively. Failure of acute treatment, discussions with the patient/family, recognizing the presence of common EOL symptoms, and prescribing specific symptomatic treatment were recorded in 88.9%, 93.3%, 94.4%, and 86.7% of patients, respectively. LLST-orders were more likely to be documented if there was severe functional impairment prior to admission (p < 0.001), advanced organ disease criteria were met (p=0.006), or closeness to death was acknowledged in writing (p < 0.001). The quality of the EOL-management was better in patients for whom there were LLST-orders (p =0.01) and written acknowledgement of closeness to death (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS LLST-orders were more likely to be written in an EACU for patients with previous severe impairment, co-morbidity, or advanced disease. Written acknowledgement of closeness to death and LLST-orders were predictors of better EOL-management.

Abstract
Contrast is the most effective stimulus in the visual system. The response of single cells to changes in stimulus contrast has been studied in a large variety of animals and the contrast response function determined. In the rat, studies on responses to contrast have been focused primarily in the geniculocortical pathway and there are relatively few in subcortical structures. We report here for the first time the contrast response function of single units located in the superior colliculus (SC) of the albino rat to several stimulus contrast. Cells in the SC require a relatively high contrast to elicit a reliable response and the dynamic response range is restricted to a short contrast interval.

Abstract
The short range force between the tip and the surface atoms, that is responsible for atomic-scale contrast in atomic force microscopy (AFM), is mainly controlled by the tip apex. Thus, the ability to image, manipulate and chemically identify single atoms in semiconductor surfaces is ultimately determined by the apex structure and its composition. Here we present a detailed and systematic study of the most common structures that can be expected at the apex of the Si tips used in experiments. We tackle the determination of the structure and stability of Si tips with three different approaches: (i) first principles simulations of small tip apexes; (ii) simulated annealing of a Si cluster; and (iii) a minima hopping study of large Si tips. We have probed the tip apexes by making atomic contacts between the tips and then compared force-distance curves with the experimental short range forces obtained with dynamic force spectroscopy. The main conclusion is that although there are multiple stable solutions for the atomically sharp tip apexes, they can be grouped into a few types with characteristic atomic structures and properties. We also show that the structure of the last atomic layers in a tip apex can be both crystalline and amorphous. We corroborate that the atomically sharp tips are thermodynamically stable and that the tip-surface interaction helps to produce the atomic protrusion needed to get atomic resolution.

Abstract
Anti-idiotype monoclonal antibody (mAb) 1E10 was generated by immunizing BALB/c mice with an Ab1 mAb which recognizes NeuGc-containing gangliosides, sulfatides and some tumor antigens. 1E10 mAb induces therapeutic effects in a primary breast carcinoma and a melanoma model. However, the tumor immunity mechanisms have not been elucidated. Here we show that aluminum hydroxide-precipitated 1E10 mAb immunization induced anti-metastatic effect in the 3LL-D122 Lewis Lung carcinoma, a poorly immunogenic and highly metastatic model in C57BL/6 mice. The therapeutic effect was associated to the increment of T cells infiltrating metastases, the reduction of new blood vessels formation and the increase of apoptotic tumor cells in lung nodules. Interestingly, active immunization does not induce measurable antibodies to the 1E10 mAb, the NeuGc-GM3 or tumor cells, which may suggest a different mechanism which has to be elucidated. These findings may support the relevance of this target for cancer biotherapy.

Abstract
Anti-idiotypic monoclonal antibodies (mAb) have been evaluated for actively induced immunotherapy with encouraging results. However, rational combination of cancer vaccines with chemotherapy may improve the therapeutic efficacy of these two approaches used separately. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the antitumor effect of the co-administration of 1E10 (Racotumomab), a monoclonal anti-idiotype tumor vaccine against an IgM mAb, named P3 that reacts specifically with NeuGc-containing gangliosides and low-dose Cyclophosphamide in a mammary carcinoma model. F3II tumor-bearing mice were immunized subcutaneously with 100 microg of 1E10 mAb in Alum or with 150 mg/m(2) of Cyclophosphamide intravenously 7 days after the tumor inoculation. While a limited antitumor effect was induced by a single 1E10 mAb immunization; its co-administration with low-dose Cyclophosphamide reduced significantly the F3II mammary carcinoma growth. That response was comparable with the co-administration of the standard high-dose chemotherapy for breast cancer based on 60 mg/m(2) of Doxorubicin and 600 mg/m(2) of Cyclophosphamide, without toxicity signs. Combinatorial chemo-immunotherapy promoted the CD8(+) lymphocytes tumor infiltration and enhanced tumor apoptosis. Furthermore, 1E10 mAb immunization potentiated the antiangiogenic effect of low-dose Cyclophosphamide. Additionally, splenic myeloid cells Gr1(+)/CD11b(+) associated with a suppressor phenotype were significantly reduced in F3II tumor-bearing mice immunized with 1E10 mAb alone or in combination with low-dose Cyclophosphamide. This data may provide a rational for chemo-immunotherapy combinations with potential medical implications in breast cancer.

Abstract
The stereotype content model (SCM) proposes potentially universal principles of societal stereotypes and their relation to social structure. Here, the SCM reveals theoretically grounded, cross-cultural, cross-groups similarities and one difference across 10 non-US nations. Seven European (individualist) and three East Asian (collectivist) nations (N=1,028) support three hypothesized cross-cultural similarities: (a) perceived warmth and competence reliably differentiate societal group stereotypes; (b) many out-groups receive ambivalent stereotypes (high on one dimension; low on the other); and (c) high status groups stereotypically are competent, whereas competitive groups stereotypically lack warmth. Data uncover one consequential cross-cultural difference: (d) the more collectivist cultures do not locate reference groups (in-groups and societal prototype groups) in the most positive cluster (high-competence/high-warmth), unlike individualist cultures. This demonstrates out-group derogation without obvious reference-group favouritism. The SCM can serve as a pancultural tool for predicting group stereotypes from structural relations with other groups in society, and comparing across societies.
