Abstract
A recent trend in cancer control programmes is the development of early detection strategies and chemoprevention of premalignant lesions. The present study evaluates the potential of selected markers in the biological staging of tumor progression in oral mucosa for better management of the disease. The expression patterns of various cytokeratin protein types such as 10/11, 13 & 16, 19, 18, 14 and pancytokeratin, involucrin, ras p21, epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor (EGFR) were assessed immunohistochemically in various stages of tumor progression in oral mucosa. Statistical analyses such as the Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA, Spearman's rank correlation and multiple regression analysis were carried out to see which proteins have a significant association with tumor progression in oral mucosa. Statistical analysis showed that the expression patterns of cytokeratin types 10/11, 14 and 19, involucrin and epidermal growth factor were significantly correlated with tumor progression in oral mucosa in both univariate and multivariate analysis. Thus the biological stage of a lesion can be calculated from the multiple regression equation derived for these proteins, which could be more useful in assessing the stage of tumor progression in oral mucosa than histopathological grading.

Abstract
Mechanical strength and biocompatibility are considered the main prerequisites for materials in total hip replacement or joint prosthesis. Noninvasive surgical procedures are necessary to monitor the performance of a medical device in vivo after implantation. To this aim, simultaneous Gd3+ and Dy3+ additions to the ZrO2-SiO2 binary system were investigated. The results demonstrate the effective role of Gd3+ and Dy3+ to maintain the structural and mechanical stability of cubic zirconia ( c-ZrO2) up to 1400 °C, through their occupancy of ZrO2 lattice sites. A gradual tetragonal to cubic zirconia ( t-ZrO2 → c-ZrO2) phase transition is also observed that is dependent on the Gd3+ and Dy3+ content in the ZrO2-SiO2. The crystallization of either ZrSiO4 or SiO2 at elevated temperatures is delayed by the enhanced thermal energy consumed by the excess inclusion of Gd3+ and Dy3+ at c-ZrO2 lattice. The addition of Gd3+ and Dy3+ leads to an increase in the density, elastic modulus, hardness, and toughness above that of unmodified ZrO2-SiO2. The multimodal imaging contrast enhancement of the Gd3+ and Dy3+ combinations were revealed through magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography contrast imaging tests. Biocompatibility of the Gd3+ and Dy3+ dual-doped ZrO2-SiO2 systems was verified through in vitro biological studies.

Abstract
The specificity of carbohydrate transporters towards their substrates poses a significant challenge for the development of molecular probes to monitor sugar uptake in cells for biochemical and biomedical applications. Herein we report a new set of coumarin-based fluorescent sugar conjugates applicable for the analysis of fructose uptake due to their free passage through the fructose-specific transporter GLUT5. The reported probes cover a broad range of the fluorescence spectrum providing essential tools for the evaluation of fructose transport capacity in live cells.

Abstract
The selective separation of uranyl ions from an aqueous solution is one of the most important criteria for sustainable nuclear energy production. We report herein a known, but unexplored extractant, tetraalkyl urea, which shows supreme selectivity for uranium in the presence of interfering thorium and other lanthanide ions from a nitric acid medium. The structural characterization of the uranyl complex (UO2X2·2L, where X = NO3(-), Cl(-) and Br(-)) by IR, NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction provides insight into the strong interaction between the uranyl ion and the ligand. The origin of this supreme selectivity for uranyl ions is further supported by electronic structure calculations. Uranyl binding with the extractant is thermodynamically more favourable when compared to thorium and the selectivity is achieved through a combination of electronic and steric effects.

Abstract
Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is the most accepted antiviral drug that targets the neuraminidase (NA) protein to inhibit the viral release from the host cell. Few H1N1 influenza strains with the H274Y mutation creates drug resistance to oseltamivir. In this study, we report that flavonoid cyanidin-3-sambubiocide (C3S) compound acts as a potential inhibitor against H274Y mutation. The drug resistance mechanism and inhibitory activity of C3S and oseltamivir against wild-type (WT) and H274Y mutant-type (MT) have been studied and compared based on the results of molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and quantum chemical methods. Oseltamivir has been found less binding affinity with MT. C3S has more binding affinity with WT and MT proteins. From the dynamical study, the 150th loop of the MT protein has found more deformation than WT. A single H274Y mutation induces the conformational changes in the 150th loop which leads to produce more resistance to oseltamivir. The 150th cavity is more attractive target for C3S to stop the conformational changes in the MT, than 430th cavity of NA protein. The C3S is stabilized with MT by more number of hydrogen bonds than oseltamivir. The electrostatic interaction energy shows a stronger C3S binding with MT and this compound may be more effective against oseltamivir-resistant virus strains.

Abstract
An engineered metallic nanostructure is an excellent candidate for "theranosis" of cancer, having intrinsic properties of multimodal imaging and therapy. Toward this target, the development of silver-neodymium bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag-Nd BNPs) via microwave-assisted polyol synthesis is presented. The resultant Ag-Nd BNPs exhibit good monodispersity with average size of 10 nm, fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) region, and magnetic properties. The Ag-Nd BNPs also validate MRI, CT, and NIR trimodal imaging ability and enunciate valuable temperature response upon irradiation under a NIR laser. Aided by chitosan functionalization on the surface, the Ag-Nd BNPs deliver good biocompatibility and also promote the loading of paclitaxel, an anticancer drug. Isothermal titration calorimetry affirms the combination of strong binding affinity of drug and high loading efficiency of 7 drug molecules per nanoparticle. Moreover, Ag-Nd BNPs also illustrate a highly efficient photothermal effect in PBS. Therefore, the synergistic effects of paclitaxel and the photothermal effect make BNPs excellent "combined therapeutic agents", and also give them the important ability to destroy cancer cells in vitro at very low dose in comparison to single therapy. Thus, the Ag-Nd BNPs unveil a combination of MRI/CT/NIR imaging and chemo-photothermal therapy that ensures accurate diagnosis at an early stage and comprehensive eradication of tumor cells without affecting healthy cells.

Abstract
A series of Gd3+ dopings in zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) systems were undertaken to explore the resultant structural, morphological, hydrothermal aging, and mechanical behavior and imaging contrast abilities. The results from the characterization techniques demonstrate the significance of Gd3+ in preserving the structural stability of ZTA systems. ZTA undergoes phase degradation with 10 wt % Gd3+ at 1400 °C, while the 100 wt % Gd3+ yields GdAlO3 even at 1200 °C. Gd3+ doping at the intermediate level preserves the structural stability of ZTA systems until 1400 °C. Gd3+ occupies the ZrO2 lattice, and its gradual accumulation induces tetragonal ZrO2 (t-ZrO2) to cubic ZrO2 (c-ZrO2) phase transition. α-Al2O3 crystallizes at 1200 °C and remains unperturbed except for its reaction with the free Gd3+ ions to yield GdAlO3. Aging studies and mechanical tests signify the impeccable role of Gd3+ in ZTA systems to resist phase degradation. Further, the imaging contrast ability of ZTA systems due to Gd3+ doping is verified from the in vitro magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To generate a nomogram for predicting the risk of neck node metastasis in pathologically node-negative patients using a combination of variables comprising of protein expression, ultrastructural alterations and clinicopathological parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Surgically removed oral tumours (n = 103) were analysed for the expression of desmosomal and hemidesmosomal assembly proteins by immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural alterations by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Protein expression, ultrastructural alterations and clinicopathological variables were used to construct nomogram from the training set in 75 patients. Clinical utility of the nomogram was validated in a discrete set of 28 patients. RESULTS Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on the training set, and obtained significant variables comprising of integrin β4 expression (p = .027), number of hemidesmosomes (p = .027)/desmosomes (p = .046), tumour differentiation grade (p = .033) and tumour thickness (p = .024) were used for construction of the nomogram. The area under the curve was calculated for both training 0.821 (95% CI 0.725-0.918) and validation sets 0.880 (95% CI 0.743-1.000). The nomogram demonstrated a predictive accuracy of 73.3% and 78.6% with the sensitivity of 81.4% and 83.3% in the training and validation sets, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The nomogram constructed on postsurgical tumour samples will be a value addition to histopathology for the detection of neck node metastasis in pathologically node-negative patients.

Abstract
The ability of β-Tricalcium phosphate [β-TCP, β-Ca3(PO4)2] to host iron at its structural lattice and its associated magnetic susceptibility, hyperthermia effect, biocompatibility and mechanical characteristics is investigated. The studies revealed the ability of β-Ca3(PO4)2 to host 5.02mol% of Fe3+ at its Ca2+(5) site. Excess Fe3+ additions led to the formation of trigonal Ca9Fe(PO4)7 and moreover a minor amount of CaFe3(PO4)3O crystallization was also observed. A gradual increment in the iron content at β-Ca3(PO4)2 results in the simultaneous effect of pronounced hyperthermia effect and mechanical stability. However, the presence of CaFe3(PO4)3O contributes for the reduced hyperthermia effect and mechanical stability of iron substituted β-Ca3(PO4)2. Haemolytic tests, cytotoxicity tests and ALP gene expression analysis confirmed the biocompatibility of the investigated systems.
