Abstract
We have investigated the response of the work function, W, of low-index aluminum surfaces to tangential strain by using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. This response parameter is a central quantity in electrocapillary coupling of metal electrodes relating to the performance of porous metal actuators and surface stress based sensing devices. We find that Al surfaces exhibit a positive response for all orientations considered. By contrast, previous studies reported negative-valued response parameters for clean surfaces of several transition metals. We discuss separately the response of W to different types of strain and the impact of the strain on the Fermi energy and the surface dipole. We argue that the reason for the abnormal positive sign of the Al response parameter lies in its high valence electron density.

Abstract
AIM To assess volume changes of treated and non-treated liver segments after selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and compromised hepatic function due to cirrhosis over a time course of 12 months after SIRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients underwent SIRT of the right liver lobe with yttrium 90 (Y-90). Absolute volumes of the right liver lobe (RLV) and left liver lobe (LLV) were assessed using computed tomography (CT) before and 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after SIRT. Changes at follow-up relative to baseline volumes were analysed ("normalized" volumes). Furthermore, the relative volume of the LLV [LLV/(RLV + LLV)] was calculated ("relative" volumes). For statistical analysis p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Forty-five HCC patients (36 men, nine women, mean age 71.9 years, range 55-90 years) were studied. The mean baseline RLV and LLV reached 1116 ml [95% confidence intervals (CI): 1006-1226 ml] and 601 ml (95% CI: 514-688 ml), respectively. At 6 months following radioembolization, the LLV increased by 30.8% (RLV -33.9%), with the relative LLV increasing from 35% (pre-radioembolization) to 50.5%. RLV further decreased and LLV increased 12 months after SIRT (nRLV -44.9%, nLLV +40.1%, relative LLV 56.5%). All changes were significant. CONCLUSION Constraints of liver function after radioembolization of one liver lobe can be partially compensated through hypertrophy of the contralateral lobe. The rate of volumetric changes is the highest in the first 6 months following radioembolization. The present data can also be the basis to propagate radiation lobectomy for selected patients, simultaneously providing tumour control and future remnant liver hypertrophy before curative hemihepatectomy.

Abstract
We report the fabrication and visible laser operation of Pr,Mg:SrAl12O19 waveguides. Waveguiding structures were created by focusing the radiation of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser into bulk material. Guiding losses were determined to be as low as 0.12 dB cm(-1) at 632.8 nm. By employing a frequency-doubled optically pumped semiconductor laser, waveguide laser operation was realized at wavelengths of 525.3, 644.0, and 724.9 nm with output powers as high as 36, 1065, and 504 mW, respectively. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of green laser operation in a Pr(3+)-doped crystalline waveguide laser.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Loss of integrity in nonlesional white matter occurs as a fundamental feature of multiple sclerosis in adults. The purpose of our study was to evaluate DTI-derived measures of white matter microstructure in children with MS compared with age- and sex-matched controls by using tract-based spatial statistics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen consecutive pediatric patients with MS (11 female/3 male; mean age, 15.1 ± 1.6 years; age range, 12-17 years) and age- and sex-matched healthy subjects (11 female/3 male; mean age, 14.8 ± 1.7 years) were included in the study. After we obtained DTI sequences, data processing was performed by using tract-based spatial statistics. RESULTS Compared with healthy age- and sex-matched controls, children with multiple sclerosis showed a global decrease in mean fractional anisotropy (P ≤ .001), with a concomitant increase in mean (P < .001), radial (P < .05), and axial diffusivity (P < .001). The most pronounced fractional anisotropy value decrease in patients with MS was found in the splenium of the corpus callosum (P < .001). An additional decrease in fractional anisotropy was identified in the right temporal and right and left parietal regions (P < .001). Fractional anisotropy of the white matter skeleton was related to disease duration and may, therefore, serve as a diagnostic marker. CONCLUSIONS The microstructure of white matter is altered early in the disease course in childhood multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
Currently laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard of therapy for diseases related with gallstones, namely symptomatic cholecystolithiasis, acute and chronic cholecystitis and also as therapy for gallbladder adenoids. Together with laparoscopic appendectomy, this procedure often is one of the first laparoscopic operations performed by new interns. Therefore a standardised, reproducible approach to ensure the patient safety is necessary. The procedure can be subdivided into 10 substeps--so-called "nodal points"--which must be completed before the next substep can be started. This article and the attached video show the ten "nodal points" of a standardised laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Abstract
The current legal uncertainty on compulsory treatment of mentally ill patient incapable of giving consent favors the practice of defensive treatment, such as the increased use of isolation and fixation instead of medication. Such a stance runs the risk of acute or chronic health damage for patients. The dissent between legal practitioners and psychiatrists on compulsory treatment is obviously based on a different understanding of autonomy and its prerequisites. We advocate an individual centered, preferably open form of treatment by medicinal and milieu therapeutic approaches in association with intensified relationships with the aim to restore or improve the ability for self-determination. We also call upon the legislative authorities to establish legal certainty. It is decisive that the characteristics of mental diseases and the possibilities of modern treatment are taken into consideration in order to suitably respect patient autonomy without neglecting the necessary help.

Abstract
A series of recent court decisions have been concerned with the compulsory treatment of patients with mental disorders who are incapable of giving consent. This article describes the current legal situation on compulsory treatment for different cases to achieve the aim of internment, endangerment to third parties, self-endangerment, for intercurrent diseases and to achieve the aim of therapy. The verdicts contribute on the one hand to strengthen patient autonomy against governmental or medical paternalism. On the other hand the verdicts have effected a substantial legal uncertainty with the undesired indirect consequence that fixation will probably be used more often.

Abstract
If prosthodontic treatment is considered after periodontal therapy, the questions arise i) does prosthodontic treatment affect the treatment outcome of the dentition in general and ii) which type of prosthesis is related to best treatment outcome of abutment teeth? Our goal was to compare long-term tooth loss after comprehensive periodontal therapy in patients with or without prosthodontic treatment. Ninety patients' charts with a total of 1937 teeth who had received comprehensive periodontal treatment 5-17 years ago by the same periodontist were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty-five patients received fixed dental prostheses (FDP; n = 29) and/or removable partial dentures anchored with clips (RPDC; n = 25) or double crowns (RPDD; n = 25). Twenty-five patients were also periodontally compromised but treated without prosthodontic treatment and served as a control group. A total of 317 teeth and 70 abutment teeth were lost during 9.7 ± 4.1 years of observation. Thereof, 273 teeth and 48 abutment teeth were lost due to periodontal reasons. Mean tooth loss amounted to 1.2 ± 1.5 (controls) and 4.4 ± 3.4 (partial dentures). Abutment tooth loss was 0.4 ± 1.1 (FDP), 1.0 ± 1.2 (RPDC) and 1.3 ± 1.0 (RPDD). Poisson regressions identified prosthodontic treatment, age, socio-economic status, diabetes mellitus, mean initial bone loss and aggressive periodontitis as factors significantly contributing to tooth loss. Age, diabetes and non-compliance contributed to abutment tooth loss. Not considering biomechanical factors, patients with prosthodontic reconstructions under long-term supportive periodontal therapy were at higher risk for further tooth loss than patients without prostheses. Not only the type of partial denture but also the patient-related risk factors were associated with abutment tooth loss.

Abstract
There are many challenges in accomplishing tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) and obtaining a proper tip is probably the greatest one. Since tip size, composition, and geometry are the ultimate parameters that determine enhancement of intensity and lateral resolution, the tip becomes the most critical component in a TERS experiment. However, since the discovery of TERS the cantilevers used in atomic force microscopy (AFM) have remained basically the same: commercial silicon (or silicon nitride) tips covered by a metallic coating. The main issues of using metal-coated silicon cantilevers, such as wearing off of the metal layer or increased tip radius, can be completely overcome by using all-metal cantilevers. Until now in TERS experiments such probes have only been used in a scanning tunneling microscope or in a tuning fork-based shear force microscope but not in AFM. In this work for the first time, we show the use of compact silver cantilevers that are fully compatible with contact and tapping modes in AFM demonstrating their superb performance in TERS experiments.

Abstract
Epigenetic control of gene expression occurs at two distinctlevels: DNA methylation and histone modification. Over thepast 10 years, the discovery of epigenetic targets has acceleratedto the point where more than 400 domains have beenidentified that are involved in either DNA methylation, themodification of histones (and some nonhistones), or translationof these modifications into changes in gene expression

Abstract
We study the properties of spin systems realized by cold polar molecules interacting via dipole-dipole interactions in two dimensions. Using a spin wave theory, that allows for the full treatment of the characteristic long-distance tail of the dipolar interaction, we find several anomalous features in the ground state correlations and the spin wave excitation spectrum, which are absent in their counterparts with short-range interaction. The most striking consequence is the existence of true long-range order at finite temperature for a two-dimensional phase with a broken U(1) symmetry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care in nursing homes has become an increasing focal point of healthcare in Germany and the evaluation of the specific quality of palliative care in this setting is under discussion. The assessment of quantitative data has the advantage of allowing pre-post comparisons of different interventions and implementation procedures and can therefore be used for evaluation of effectiveness. However, no assessment tool in German is available yet. Recent research on the assessment of healthcare professionals' knowledge indicated that knowing about technical and psychosocial aspects of palliative care is an easily measurable index for the quality of care. In consequence this index will be used as the core of the test instrument. The specific self-efficacy related to palliative care should be additionally included. METHOD An analysis of the two most common tests of palliative care knowledge by three experts revealed that these instruments were only partly useful in Germany because of differences in the healthcare systems. The experts also criticised that the tests included only a few items concerning psychosocial care and that these items often showed ceiling effects. In addition, the instruments were not suitable for use in nursing homes. For specific self-efficacy only one test is available in Dutch. The items of these three instruments were face validated by 5 experts and new items were generated where needed. The content validity was verified again by five experts with the think-aloud method. Items were validated in 23 calliative care trainers whose expert knowledge served as an external criterion. Items that scored low in this group were eliminated. A second sample of 36 assistant nurses working in nursing homes who took part in a workshop for palliative care was used to assess change sensitivity before and after training. RESULTS A total of 23 items for the knowledge test and 15 items for specific self-efficacy were selected. The level of difficulty was suitable because an expert group could answer the questions while for assistant nurses the items were sufficiently difficult to show a difference between groups. Items were very sensitive to change after a training course. CONCLUSION The BPW is the first standardized test instrument for palliative care in the German language. In comparison to the other tests it includes items from the psychosocial domain without demonstrating a ceiling effect for these items. Content and criterion validity were good. Additional tests with larger samples and with other groups of nurses working in other settings would be needed to improve the data on reliability and to extend the validation to other settings.

Abstract
During the last decades, New World monkey (NWM, Platyrrhini, Anthropoideae) comparative cytogenetics has shed light on many fundamental aspects of genome organisation and evolution in this fascinating, but also highly endangered group of neotropical primates. In this review, we first provide an overview about the evolutionary origin of the inferred ancestral NWM karyotype of 2n = 54 chromosomes and about the lineage-specific chromosome rearrangements resulting in the highly divergent karyotypes of extant NWM species, ranging from 2n = 16 in a titi monkey to 2n = 62 in a woolly monkey. Next, we discuss the available data on the chromosome phylogeny of NWM in the context of recent molecular phylogenetic analyses. In the last part, we highlight some recent research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the large-scale evolutionary genomic changes in platyrrhine monkeys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Memory disturbance is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS), but little is known about autobiographical memory deficits in the long-term course of different MS subtypes. Inflammatory activity and demyelination is pronounced in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) whereas, similar to Alzheimer's disease, neurodegeneration affecting autobiographical memory-associated areas is seen in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). OBJECTIVE In light of distinct disease mechanisms, we evaluated autobiographical memory in different MS subtypes and hypothesized similarities between elderly patients with SPMS and Alzheimer's disease. METHODS We used the Autobiographical Memory Interview to assess episodic and semantic autobiographical memory in 112 education- and gender-matched participants, including healthy controls and patients with RRMS, SPMS, amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and early Alzheimer's dementia (AD). RESULTS Patients with SPMS, AD, and aMCI, but not with RRMS, exhibited a pattern of episodic autobiographical memory impairment that followed Ribot's Law; older memories were better preserved than more recent memories. In contrast to aMCI and AD, neither SPMS nor RRMS was associated with semantic autobiographical memory impairment. CONCLUSION Our neuropsychological findings suggest that episodic autobiographical memory is affected in long-term patients with SPMS, possibly due to neurodegenerative processes in functional relevant brain regions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Postsurgical evaluation of bone microcirculation in osseous and osseocutaneus free flaps by contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with time intensity curve (TIC) analysis and [18F]-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (Fluoride-PET/CT). PATIENTS AND METHODS 10 patients with osseous or osseocutaneus microvascular flaps were evaluated with CEUS. Ultrasound was carried out by an experienced examiner with a high resolution linear probe (6-9 MHz, LOGIQ E9, GE) after intravenous bolus injection of 2.4 ml SonoVue® (BRACCO, Germany). Time intensity curves (TIC) in selected regions of interest (ROI) were analyzed and compared with the evaluation of [18F]-positron emission tomography/computed tomography and the clinical course for at least 2 month. RESULTS 9/10 patients showed evidence for soft tissue and osseous microcirculation of the transplants in CEUS correlating with the clinical course. The soft tissue parts of the transplant showed a mean value of 84% (range 51-98%) and the bone parts a mean value of 39% (range 11-75%) for the Area under the curve (AuC) compared with the AuC for the anastomotic vessel region. Mean values for time to peak (TTP) were 27,1 sec (range 8.7-52.0 sec) for the anastomotic vessels, 29.3 sec (range 7.9-62.0 sec) for the soft tissue of and 32.0 sec (range 7.4-69.0 sec) for the transplant bone. In 1/10 patients flap failure occurred, after denudation the bone was left as an avascular transplant. AuC showed a mean value of 0.5 % for the bone region compared with the vessel region. Fluoride-PET/CT assessed bone vitality in 7 patients as "good" in 1 patient as "uncertain" and in 1 patient as "poor". CEUS assessment was corresponding with Fluoride-PET/CT in 4 patients, clinical assessment in 6 patients. CONCLUSION Fluoride-PET/CT is a valuable tool to make an indirect statement about the perfusion of the transplanted bone and was used as control in this study. CEUS is a new and promising method for the evaluation of microcirculation of buried free microvascular bone grafts and the osseous part of osseocutaneous flaps and may be used for a steady monitoring in the first postoperative days.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Estrogen Receptor 1 (ESR1) aberrations may be associated with expression of estrogen receptor (ER) or progesterone receptor (PgR), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) or Ki-67 labeling index and prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS ESR1 was assessed in 1129 (81%) of 1396 postmenopausal Danish women with early breast cancer randomly assigned to receive 5 years of letrozole, tamoxifen or a sequence of these agents in the Breast International Group 1-98 trial and who had ER ≥ 1% after central review. RESULTS By FISH, 13.6% of patients had an ESR1-to-Centromere-6 (CEN-6) ratio ≥ 2 (amplified), and 4.2% had ESR1-to-CEN-6 ratio <0.8 (deleted). Deletion of ESR1 was associated with significantly lower levels of ER (P < 0.0001) and PgR (P = 0.02) and more frequent HER2 amplification. ESR1 deletion or amplification was associated with higher-Ki-67 than ESR1-normal tumors. Overall, there was no evidence of heterogeneity of disease-free survival (DFS) or in treatment effect according to ESR1 status. However, significant differences in DFS were observed for subsets based on a combination of ESR1 and HER2 status (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS ESR1 aberrations were associated with HER2 status, Ki-67 labeling index and ER and PgR levels. When combined with HER2, ESR1 may be prognostic but should not be used for endocrine treatment selection in postmenopausal women with endocrine-responsive early breast cancer.

Abstract
A 13-year-old girl presented with load-dependent pain of the medial part of the right foot. The medical history revealed no trauma and no sports-related injury. X-ray examinations of the foot and lower leg showed subcortical increased sclerosis at the medial part of the tibia, the medial tarsal bones and of a bunion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed corresponding findings with localized edema of the bone marrow within the increased subcortical sclerosis but no indications of subcutaneous fibrosis. The constellation is indicative of melorheostosis, a rare benign sclerosis of bones and soft tissue. Subcutaneous fibrosis and limb shortening are also common.
