Abstract
We discuss approaches to increase the light outcoupling efficiency in organic microcavity (MC) lasers and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). We find that the introduction of metals into the cavities leads to additional Tamm-plasmon polariton modes, while the corrugation of metal contacts, such as perforated μ-size holes or a periodic array of metal stripes, leads to 2D confinement of the cavity modes, which in turn reduces the lasing threshold in MCs. Furthermore, we elucidate light loss mechanisms in OLEDs and reveal how external dielectric layers and periodic gratings can be used to enhance outcoupling from the OLED cavity.

Abstract
Powder-based three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a versatile method that allows creating synthetic calcium phosphate (CaP) scaffolds of complex shapes and structures. However, one major drawback is the difficulty of removing all remnants of loose powder from the printed scaffolds, the so-called depowdering step. In this study, a new design approach was proposed to solve this problem. Specifically, the design of the printed scaffolds consisted of a cage with windows large enough to enable depowdering while still trapping loose fillers placed inside the cage. To demonstrate the potential of this new approach, two filler geometries were used: sandglass and cheese segment. The distance between the fillers was varied and they were either glued to the cage or free to move after successful depowdering. Depowdering efficiency was quantified by microstructural morphometry. The results showed that the use of mobile fillers significantly improved depowdering. Based on this study, large 3DP scaffolds can be realized, which might be a step towards a broader clinical use of 3D printed CaP scaffolds.

Abstract
Bragg scattering effects in bottom-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) grown on corrugated aluminum-doped zinc oxide electrodes are analyzed. Periodic corrugation is introduced by structuring the oxide electrode via UV laser ablation, a process that enables flexible adjustment of the period and height of corrugation. We demonstrate that fabrication of stable and electrically efficient OLEDs on these rough substrates is feasible. Sharp spectral features are superimposed onto the broad emission spectra of the OLEDs, providing clear evidence for Bragg scattering of light from guided modes into the air cone. Theoretical analysis based on an emissive dipole model and conservation of momentum considerations allows a quantitative description of scattering and the associated dispersion relations.

Abstract
In recent experiments at the velocity filter Separator for Heavy Ion reaction Products (SHIP) (GSI, Darmstadt), an extended and improved set of α-decay data for more than 20 of the most neutron-deficient isotopes in the region from lead to thorium was obtained. The combined analysis of this newly available α-decay data, of which the (186)Po decay is reported here, allowed us for the first time to clearly show that crossing the Z = 82 shell to higher proton numbers strongly accelerates the α decay. From the experimental data, the α-particle formation probabilities are deduced following the Universal Decay Law approach. The formation probabilities are discussed in the framework of the pairing force acting among the protons and the neutrons forming the α particle. A striking resemblance between the phenomenological pairing gap deduced from experimental binding energies and the formation probabilities is noted. These findings support the conjecture that both the N = 126 and Z = 82 shell closures strongly influence the α-formation probability.

Abstract
Short selective neuropeptide Y (NPY) analogs are highly attractive because of their facile synthesis. Based on the reduced-size NPY analog [Pro(30), Nle(31), Bpa(32), Leu(34)]NPY 28-36 position 32 was identified as a key position to alter the preferential activation pattern of the human neuropeptide Y receptors (hYRs). By replacing benzoylphenylalanine (Bpa) by a biphenylalanine (Bip) the photostability was first improved while the biological activity was maintained. SAR-studies showed that both aromatic rings have a high influence on the preferential hYR subtype activation. Interestingly, replacement of Bpa(32) by a strongly hydrophobic moiety changed the hYR subtype preference of the analog. Whereas the parent compound is able to activate the human neuropeptide Y1 receptor (hY1R) subtype, the introduction of an N(ε)-ortho-carbaboranyl propionic acid modified lysine resulted in a loss of activity at the hY1R but in an increased activity at both the hY2R and the hY4R. However, subsequent receptor internalization studies with this novel analog revealed that receptor internalization can neither be triggered at the hY2R nor at the hY4R suggesting a biased ligand. Surprisingly, investigations by (1)H NMR spectroscopy revealed structural changes in the side chains of residues Pro(30) and Leu(34) which nicely correlates with the shift from hY1R/hY4R to hY2R/hY4R activation preference. Thus, position 32 has been identified to switch the bioactive conformation and subsequently influences receptor subtype activation behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Ectodomain shedding is a major mechanism to modulate platelet receptor signaling and to downregulate platelet reactivity. Proteins of the a disintegrin and metalloproteinase (ADAM) family are implicated in the shedding of various platelet receptors. The signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM) family receptor CD84 is highly expressed in platelets and immune cells, but its role in platelet physiology is not well explored. Because of its ability to form homodimers, CD84 has been suggested to mediate contact-dependent signaling and contribute to thrombus stability. However, nothing is known about the cellular regulation of CD84. METHODS We studied the regulation of CD84 in murine platelets by biochemical approaches and use of three different genetically modified mouse lines. Regulation of CD84 in human platelets was studied using inhibitors and biochemical approaches. RESULTS We show that CD84 is cleaved from the surface of human and murine platelets in response to different shedding inducing agents and platelet receptor agonists. CD84 downregulation occurs through ectodomain-shedding and intracellular cleavage. Studies in transgenic mice identified ADAM10 as the principal sheddase responsible for CD84 cleavage, whereas ADAM17 was dispensable. Western blot analyses revealed calpain-mediated intracellular cleavage of the CD84 C-terminus, occurring simultaneously with, but independently of, ectodomain shedding. Furthermore, analysis of plasma and serum samples from transgenic mice demonstrated that CD84 is constitutively shed from the platelet surface by ADAM10 in vivo. CONCLUSIONS These results reveal a dual regulation mechanism for platelet CD84 by simultaneous extra- and intracellular cleavage that may modulate platelet-platelet and platelet-immune cell interactions.

Abstract
Quantum-mechanical shell effects are expected to strongly enhance nuclear binding on an "island of stability" of superheavy elements. The predicted center at proton number Z = 114, 120, or 126 and neutron number N = 184 has been substantiated by the recent synthesis of new elements up to Z = 118. However, the location of the center and the extension of the island of stability remain vague. High-precision mass spectrometry allows the direct measurement of nuclear binding energies and thus the determination of the strength of shell effects. Here, we present such measurements for nobelium and lawrencium isotopes, which also pin down the deformed shell gap at N = 152.
