Abstract
Ectopic pregnancy occurring in the same region is a comparatively rare disease, but sometimes it is very serious to patients if it is delayed. The authors present a case of spontaneous ectopic pregnancy occurring in the ipsilateral salpingectomy stump of a previous adnexectomy that was successfully removed via laparoscopic surgery without complication. This case may support the idea of intrauterine transmigration of a fertilized egg as an etiology of spontaneous ectopic pregnancy. Thus, the potential for ectopic pregnancy in the tubal remnant in cases of previous salpingectomy or adnexectomy needs to be carefully considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of the study was to investigate the frequencies and types of Y chromosome microdeletions in infertile men and to analyze the relationship between the levels of reproductive hormones and Y microdeletions. METHODS A total of 1,226 infertile men were screened for Y chromosome microdeletions using multiplex PCR assay. Karyotype analysis was performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes with standard G-banding. Serum reproductive hormone levels were measured. RESULTS Out of 1,226 infertile patients, 134 (10.93%) had Y microdeletions. One hundred seven of 765 (13.99%) non-obstructive azoospermic patients and 27 of 133 (20.30%) severe oligozoospermic patients had Y microdeletions. Among the 134 infertile men with Y microdeletions, the most frequent microdeletions were detected in the AZFc region, followed by AZFbc, AZFb, AZFa, AZFabc(Yq), Yp(SRY)+Yq, and partial AZFc regions. Karyotype analysis was available for 130 of the 134 patients with Y microdeletions. Of them, 36 (27.69%) patients had sex chromosomal abnormalities. Levels of FSH and LH in patients with AZFc microdeletion were significantly lower, while those in patients with Yp(SRY)+Yq were significantly higher than in patients without Y microdeletions. Level of testosterone in patients with AZFabc(Yq) or Yp(SRY)+Yq was significantly lower than that in patients without Y microdeletions. However, there was no significant difference in the levels of reproductive hormones between all patients with and without Y microdeletions. CONCLUSION These results highlight the need for Y chromosome microdeletion screening for correct diagnosis of male infertility. Obtaining reliable genetic information for assisted reproductive techniques can prevent unnecessary treatment and vertical transmission of genetic defects to offspring.

Abstract
Invasive apocrine carcinoma (IAC) of the breast is a rare subtype of breast malignancy. Its incidence is not well known, but it is approximately less than 1% to 4%. For these reasons, there are few reports and little information on the radiologic appearance of IAC. Furthermore, most of the case reports show malignant features which are similar to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). We present a rare case of IAC without typical malignant feature on mammography, and ultrasonography (USG). Imaging findings on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT are also presented. The nodule in our case showed a relatively benign feature on USG and it is the first case of IAC with unusual findings. Therefore, this report may encourage radiologists to consider the malignant potential and perform pathologic correlation even if a newly developed nodule does not present with a typical malignant feature on USG.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a polygenic and multi-factorial disease showing ethnic differences in terms of its severity and frequency. Therapies targeting interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-17 receptor (IL-17R) and Janus kinases (JAKs) are in clinical development for the treatment of psoriasis, and their success suggests the essential role of these molecules in psoriasis. To investigate the genetic susceptibility in T helper type 17 (Th17) cell signal transduction pathways for promoting psoriasis, we performed candidate gene and linkage disequilibrium analysis. In 208 patients and 266 normal controls, we analysed 31 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 12 genes (CAMP, IL17A, IL17F, IL17RA, IL22, JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, STAT3, TLR7, TLR9 and TYK2; abbreviations: CAMP, human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide; STAT-3, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3; TLR, Toll-like receptor; TYK2, tyrosine kinase 2). Patients with psoriasis showed a strong association for IL17F rs763780 [odds ratio (OR) = 3·27, P = 0·04], which results in a histidine-to-arginine substitution, and JAK2 rs2274471 (OR = 2·66, P = 0·02). In addition, JAK2 rs7849191 showed a protective pattern, met the significance threshold (OR = 0·77, P = 0·05) and showed a tendency for an inverse association with the frequency of early-onset psoriasis under age 40 years (P = 0·07). In haplotype analysis, JAK1 rs310241A/rs2780889T showed a protective effect (OR = 0·73, P = 0·03) in psoriasis. In conclusion, we report two new psoriasis-susceptibility loci, in IL17F and JAK2, as well as a newly identified late-onset associated protective JAK2 locus and a protective JAK1 haplotype in the Korean population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deletion of exon 2 of copper metabolism domain containing 1 (COMMD1) results in copper toxicosis in Bedlington terriers (CT-BT). OBJECTIVES This study was conducted to identify the prevalence and clinical relevance of the COMMD1 mutation in Bedlington terriers in Korea. ANIMALS A total of 105 purebred Bedlington terriers (50 males, 55 females) from the kennels and pet dog clubs in Korea were examined during the period 2008-2013. METHODS A multiplex PCR was carried out to detect exon 2 deletion of COMMD1. Clinical analysis was performed on each genetic group, and clinical status of the dogs was followed up to estimate survival probability. RESULTS Of the 105 samples, 52 (49%) were wild-type homozygote, 47 (45%) were heterozygote, and 6 (6%) were mutant-type homozygote. Plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity was increased in the mutant-type homozygous group >2 years of age (P < .0001). The survival probability of 6 mutant-type homozygotes surviving 2.5 years was 0.67, and 4 years was 0.5. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Results show the prevalence and clinical relevance of exon 2 deletion of COMMD1 and could help establish a structured selective breeding program to prevent CT-BT in Korea.

Abstract
Early detection of synchronous esophageal squamous cell neoplasm (ESCN) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients can significantly affect their prognosis. We investigated the prevalence of synchronous ESCN and the risk factors for developing ESCN in patients with HNSCC, and evaluated the effect of routine endoscopic screening in these patients. Subjects who were diagnosed as HNSCC from May 2010 to January 2014 were eligible. All patients underwent conventional white light endoscopic examinations with narrow band imaging and Lugol chromoendoscopy. Among 458 subjects screened, 28 synchronous ESCN were detected in 24 patients (5.2%). The prevalence of ESCN was greatest in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer (20.9%). In multivariate analysis, pyriform sinus involvement was independent risk factor for developing synchronous ESCN (odds ratio 171.2, P < 0.001). During the follow-up period (median, 24 months), the 3-year overall survival rates was significantly lower in patients with ESCN than in patients without ESCN (54.2% vs. 78.3%, P = 0.0013). Routine endoscopic screening for detecting synchronous ESCN should be recommended for patients with HNSCC, especially those with pyriform sinus involvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing awareness of the coexistence of Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular disease (AD+CVD), however, due to lack of well-defined criteria and treatment guidelines AD+CVD may be underdiagnosed in Asia. METHODS Sixteen dementia specialists from nine Asia Pacific countries completed a survey in September 2014 and met in November 2014 to review the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of AD+CVD in Asia. A consensus was reached by discussion, with evidence provided by published studies when available. RESULTS AD accounts for up to 60% and AD+CVD accounts for 10-20% of all dementia cases in Asia. The reasons for underdiagnosis of AD+CVD include lack of awareness as a result of a lack of diagnostic criteria, misdiagnosis as vascular dementia or AD, lack of diagnostic facilities, resource constraints and cost of investigations. There is variability in the tools used to diagnose AD+CVD in clinical practice. Diagnosis of AD+CVD should be performed in a stepwise manner of clinical evaluation followed by neuroimaging. Dementia patients should be assessed for cognition, behavioural and psychological symptoms, functional staging and instrumental activities of daily living. Neuroimaging should be performed using computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The treatment goals are to stabilize or slow progression as well as to reduce behavioural and psychological symptoms, improve quality of life and reduce disease burden. First-line therapy is usually an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor such as donepezil. CONCLUSION AD+CVD is likely to be under-recognised in Asia. Further research is needed to establish the true prevalence of this treatable and potentially preventable disease.

Abstract
AIM Little is known about the long-term outcome of T1 colorectal cancer (CRC) following curative resection. The present study addressed the long-term outcome of locally or radically resected T1 CRCs. METHOD A total of 430 patients with T1 CRC who underwent local or radical resection were considered. Unfavourable histological factors were defined as positive resection margin, deep submucosal invasion, vascular invasion, Grade 3 and budding. The patients were classified as low-risk (unfavourable histological factor negative, n = 65) or high-risk (unfavourable histological factor positive, n = 365). RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 78.4 months, disease recurred in 16 (3.7%) patients in the high-risk group, and no recurrence in the low-risk group. Resection type and vascular invasion were significantly associated with recurrence. In the vascular invasion (+) high-risk group, both 5-year disease-free survival rate and 5-year overall survival rate were significantly associated with resection type (radical 94.6%, local 43.8%, P < 0.001, and radical 99.1%, local 66.7%, P < 0.001). In the vascular invasion (-) high-risk group, 5-year disease-free survival rate was also significantly associated with resection type (radical 98.9%, local 84.7%, P = 0.001). However, 5-year overall survival rate was not associated with resection type (radical 98.9%, local 95.2%, P = 0.816). CONCLUSION Local resection may be effective and oncologically safe in low-risk T1 CRC. Although additional surgery should be recommended for the locally resected high-risk T1 CRC cases, intensive surveillance without additional surgery and timely salvage operation may offer another treatment option, if vascular invasion is negative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Retinopathy and vascular calcification (VC) are representative markers of microvascular and macrovascular dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, their relationship and combined effects on clinical outcomes remain undetermined. METHODS AND RESULTS We included 523 patients with nondialysis-dependent CKD stage 3-5 who had been examined with fundus photography for diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy. Simple radiographs were analyzed for the presence of VC. The clinical significance of VC of the abdominal aorta and iliofemoral artery (apVC) and retinopathy was evaluated in terms of the rate of renal function decline and composite of any cardiovascular event or death. CKD patients with retinopathy showed higher prevalence of apVC than those without retinopathy (25.6% vs. 12.5%, P < 0.001).The presence of retinopathy was independently associated with apVC (OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.31, 3.49). In multivariate analysis, compared with subjects with neither apVC nor retinopathy, the coexistence of both apVC and retinopathy were independently associated with rapid renal function decline (β = -1.51; 95% CI -2.40, -0.61), whereas apVC or retinopathy alone were not. Compared with subjects with neither apVC nor retinopathy, the HRs for composite end points were 1.05 (95% CI 0.48, 2.27), 1.79 (95% CI 1.14, 2.80), and 2.07 (95% CI 1.17, 3.67) for patients with apVC only, those with retinopathy only, and those with both apVC and retinopathy, respectively. CONCLUSION The coexistence of VC and retinopathy was independently associated with CKD progression and cardiovascular events or deaths, and its combined effect was stronger than any separate condition.

Abstract
The RENO experiment has analyzed about 500 live days of data to observe an energy dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} by comparing their prompt signal spectra measured in two identical near and far detectors. In the period between August of 2011 and January of 2013, the far (near) detector observed 31 541 (290 775) electron antineutrino candidate events with a background fraction of 4.9% (2.8%). The measured prompt spectra show an excess of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} around 5 MeV relative to the prediction from a most commonly used model. A clear energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} is observed in the deficit of the observed number of ν[over ¯]_{e}. Based on the measured far-to-near ratio of prompt spectra, we obtain sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.082±0.009(stat)±0.006(syst) and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=[2.62_{-0.23}^{+0.21}(stat)_{-0.13}^{+0.12}(syst)]×10^{-3} eV^{2}.

Abstract
Supraspinatus strengthening is an integral part of rehabilitation programs. However, there is disparity regarding the best exercise. Thus, we investigated the effects of supraspinatus strengthening exercises on muscle fiber bundle architecture using real-time ultrasound. Participants were randomized into full-can (FC; n = 12), empty-can (EC; n = 11,) and prone horizontal abduction (PHA; n = 11) groups and performed three sessions/week for 8 weeks. Each session involved four sets of exercise for weeks 1-4 and six sets for weeks 5-8 with eight repetitions/set. Images of supraspinatus were captured in 0° (relaxed) and 60° (contracted) glenohumeral abduction. Fiber bundle length (FBL), pennation angle, and muscle thickness were measured at beginning, mid, and end of training. Maximum isometric abduction strength was measured in full-can, empty-can, and prone horizontal abduction positions using a hand-held dynamometer. FBL decreased after 4 weeks in FC [relaxed: Δ = -0.54 cm, P = 0.001, d = 0.92; contracted: Δ = -0.27 cm, P = 0.008, d = 0.27] and EC [relaxed: Δ = -0.59 cm, P = 0.008, d = 0.86; contracted: Δ = -0.36 cm, P = 0.013, d = 0.59], but not in PHA [relaxed: Δ = -0.11, P = 0.121, d = 0.31; contracted: Δ = -0.06 cm, P = 0.486, d = 0.13]. Strength increased significantly from week 4-8 only in PHA (Δ = +0.96 kg, P = 0.004, d = 0.47) when tested in prone horizontal abduction position. Maintenance of FBL with increased strength indicates prone horizontal abduction may be a better exercise to strengthen supraspinatus.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided ethanol ablation (EA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating venolymphatic malformations (VLM) of the head and neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS US-guided EA and/or RFA were performed on 17 patients with VLM of the head and neck. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to locate the cranial nerves and salivary gland ducts that were close to targets, and these were avoided during the procedures. Treatment response was assessed using volume reduction and cosmetic grading scoring. RESULTS Nine VLMs were located close to the functional structures: Stensen's duct (n=3), cranial nerve branch (n=3), or both (n=3). All patients demonstrated >50% volume reduction, except one patient with a microcystic lymphatic malformation that was abutting the facial nerve. Median cosmetic grading scores improved from 4 to 1 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION US-guided EA and/or RFA are effective and safe treatment methods in patients with VLMs of the head and neck. Treatment selection of EA and/or RFA could be performed based on the composition of VLMs as assessed at CT and MRI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Trisomy 21 (T21) is the most common aneuploidy affecting humans and is caused by an extra copy of all or part of chromosome 21 (chr21). DNA methylation is an epigenetic event that plays an important role in human diseases via regulation of gene expression. However, the integrative association between DNA methylation and gene expression in T21 fetal placenta has yet to be determined. METHODS We profiled expression of 207 genes on chr21 and their DNA methylation patterns in placenta samples from normal and DS fetuses using microarray analysis and predicted the functions of differentially expressed genes using bioinformatics tools. RESULTS We found 47 genes with significantly increased expression in the T21 placenta compared to the normal placenta. Hypomethylation of the 47 genes was observed in the T21 placenta. Most of hypomethylated DNA positions were intragenic regions, i.e. regions inside a gene. Moreover, gene expression and hypomethylated DNA position showed significantly positive associations. By analyzing the properties of the gene-disease network, we found that increased genes in the T21 placenta were significantly associated with T21 and T21 complications such as mental retardation, neurobehavioral manifestations, and congenital abnormalities. DISCUSSION To our knowledge, this is the first study to comprehensively survey the association between gene expression and DNA methylation in chr21 of the T21 fetal placenta. Our findings provide a broad overview of the relationships between gene expression and DNA methylation in the placentas of fetuses with T21 and could contribute to future research efforts concerning genes involvement in disease pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the predictive value of separate and combined tests using cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA), cell-free total DNA (cfDNA), and biochemical markers for the early detection of pregnancies with hypertensive disorders. METHODS A nested case-control study was conducted with 135 singleton pregnancies including 17 gestational hypertension cases, 34 preeclampsia (PE) cases, and 84 controls. We performed real-time quantitative PCR to measure levels of DSCR3 and RASSF1A as cffDNA markers and HYP2 as a cfDNA marker in the first and early second trimesters. Levels of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), α-fetoprotein, β-human chorionic gonadotropin, unconjugated estriol, and inhibin A were also determined. RESULTS Compared with controls, the median levels and multiples of the median (MoM) values of HYP2 were significantly higher in the PE and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) groups at 6-14 and 15-23 weeks. Frist-trimester PAPP-A MoM was significantly lower in PE and HDP than in controls. For PE and HDP, the best model included the first-trimester DSCR3, HYP2, and PAPP-A MoM values achieving detection rates of 67 and 58% at a fixed 10% false-positive rate, respectively [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.832 (95% CI 0.689-0.928) for PE; 0.751 (0.607-0.863) for HDP]. DISCUSSION The study demonstrates the potential utility of combined first-trimester cffDNA, cfDNA, and PAPP-A for the early prediction of PE.

Abstract
SUMMARY Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS) was significantly decreased in active acromegaly patients. TBS may be useful to assess the skeletal fragility in acromegaly in which bone mineral density (BMD) is not sufficient to represent bone strength and explain the high incidence of fragility fractures in acromegaly patients. INTRODUCTION Although the data on BMD are controversial, patients with acromegaly have an increased risk of fragility fracture. We examined the lumbar spine TBS to explain the skeletal deterioration in acromegaly patients. METHODS We included 14 men and 19 women acromegaly patients who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the time of diagnosis from 2000 to 2014 at Seoul National University Hospital. Ninety-nine age-, sex- and body mass index-matched controls were recruited. Biochemical parameters, lumbar spine TBS, and BMD at all sites were measured. Gonadal status was evaluated at diagnosis. RESULTS Lumbar spine TBS was lower in acromegaly patients than in controls in both genders (1.345 ± 0.121 vs. 1.427 ± 0.087, P = 0.005 in men; 1.356 ± 0.082 vs. 1.431 ± 0.071, P = 0.001 in women). In contrast, BMD at all sites did not differ between the two groups. Hypogonadal acromegaly patients (men, n = 9; women, n = 12) had lower TBS values compared with controls both in men and women (all P < 0.05), although BMD at all sites were similar for the two groups. In eugonadal acromegaly patients, lumbar spine TBS was lower than in women controls only (P = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS Skeletal microarchitecture was deteriorated in acromegaly patients as assessed by TBS, which seems to be a consequence of growth hormone excess as well as hypogonadism, especially in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Syphilis is a well-known sexually transmitted disease, and has multiple stages and various symptoms. However, it is difficult to diagnose syphilis in patients who may have no clinical symptoms. Because of these reasons, there have been several case reports on misdiagnosis of syphilis. Generalized lymphadenopathy could be an indication of various diseases including malignancies or infections. CONCLUSION We report a case of a secondary syphilis in a patient with generalized lymphadenopathy detected by fluorine-18-fluorodeoxy glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG PET/CT) images without any clinical symptom. Clinical examination found an ulcer on his penis and serologic tests set the diagnosis of an early stage of secondary syphilis.

Abstract
Activation of the extensive cross-talk among the receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), particularly ErbB family-Met cross-talk, has emerged as a likely source of drug resistance. Notwithstanding brilliant successes were attained while using small-molecule inhibitors or antibody therapeutics against specific RTKs in multiple cancers over recent decades, a high recurrence rate remains unsolved in patients treated with these targeted inhibitors. It is well aligned with multifaceted properties of cancer and cross-talk and convergence of signaling pathways of RTKs. Thereby many therapeutic interventions have been actively developed to overcome inherent or acquired resistance. To date, no bispecific antibody (BsAb) showed complete depletion of dual RTKs from the plasma membrane and efficient dual degradation. In this manuscript, we report the first findings of a target-specific dual internalization and degradation of membrane RTKs induced by designed BsAbs based on the internalizing monoclonal antibodies and the therapeutic values of these BsAbs. Leveraging the anti-Met mAb able to internalize and degrade by a unique mechanism, we generated the BsAbs for Met/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and Met/HER2 to induce an efficient EGFR or HER2 internalization and degradation in the presence of Met that is frequently overexpressed in the invasive tumors and involved in the resistance against EGFR- or HER2-targeted therapies. We found that Met/EGFR BsAb ME22S induces dissociation of the Met-EGFR complex from Hsp90, followed by significant degradation of Met and EGFR. By employing patient-derived tumor models we demonstrate therapeutic potential of the BsAb-mediated dual degradation in various cancers.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Trabecular bone scores (TBS) have recently been developed as a diagnostic tool to assess bone texture. We studied thyroid status and TBS in a population-based cohort and demonstrated that high-normal thyroxine levels are associated with low TBS in healthy euthyroid postmenopausal women. INTRODUCTION Increased thyroid hormone levels affect bone mineral density (BMD) and, if untreated, increase the risk of fracture. However, the relationship between thyroid function and bone microarchitecture has not yet been established. Trabecular bone scores (TBS) are gray-level textural measurements of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) images. The TBS has been proposed as an indirect index of bone microarchitecture. The goal of this study was to characterize the relationship between thyroid function and TBS in euthyroid men and postmenopausal euthyroid women. METHODS A total of 1376 euthyroid subjects (648 postmenopausal women and 728 men) were recruited from a community-based cohort in Korea. Free thyroxine (fT4) levels, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, BMD, and TBS were measured and compared. RESULTS There was no significant relationship between either fT4 or TSH levels and BMD in men and women. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that high-normal fT4 levels were negatively correlated with TBS (β = -0.111; P = 0.002, after adjusting for both age and body mass index [BMI]) in postmenopausal women. In men, however, there was no significant correlation between fT4 levels and TBS. TSH levels were not significantly associated with TBS in either men or women. CONCLUSION Higher fT4 levels within the normal reference range are associated with deterioration of trabecular microarchitecture in healthy euthyroid postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Background Potential associations between oral health and respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), have been suggested in several studies. Among the indicators reflecting oral health, the number of natural teeth is an integrated and simple index to assess in the clinic. In this study, we examined the relationship between the number of natural teeth and airflow obstruction, which is a central feature of COPD. Methods A total of 3,089 participants over 40 years, who underwent reliable spirometry and oral health assessments were selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012, a cross-sectional and nationally representative survey. Spirometry results were classified as normal, restrictive, or obstructive pattern. Total number and pairs of natural teeth were counted after excluding third molars. Results After adjusting for other variables, such as age, body mass index, socioeconomic factors, and oral health factors, the group with airflow obstruction showed significantly fewer natural teeth than the other groups in males (P=0.014 and 0.008 for total number and total pairs of natural teeth, respectively). Compared with participants with full dentition, the adjusted odds ratio for airflow obstruction in males with fewer than 20 natural teeth was 4.18 (95% confidence interval: 2.06–8.49) and with fewer than 10 pairs of natural teeth was 4.74 (95% confidence interval: 2.34–9.62). However, there was no significant association between the total number or pairs of natural teeth and airflow obstruction after adjustment in females. Conclusions Loss of natural teeth was significantly associated with the presence of airflow obstruction in males. Our finding suggests that the number of natural teeth could be one of the available indices for obstructive lung diseases, including COPD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitative aberrations of novel fetal-specific epigenetic markers in maternal plasma of pregnancies with hypertensive disorders. We compared the concentrations of DSCR3, RASSF1A, and SRY as cell-free fetal DNA markers in 188 normal pregnancies, 16 pregnancies with early-onset preeclampsia (EO-PE), 47 pregnancies with late-onset preeclampsia (LO-PE), and 29 pregnancies with gestational hypertension (GH). The concentrations of all markers were significantly correlated with gestational age (p < 0.001 for all). Strong positive correlations were also observed between DSCR3 and SRY (r = 0.471, p < 0.001), as well as between RASSF1A and SRY (r = 0.326, p = 0.015) and between DSCR3 and RASSF1A (r = 0.673, p < 0.001). The concentrations of DSCR3 and RASSF1A in the EO-PE were significantly higher at 24–32 weeks and onwards (p < 0.05 for both). In the LO-PE, DSCR3 and RASSF1A concentrations were significantly higher only at 33–41 weeks compared with the controls. The concentrations of all markers in the GH group were not significantly different from those in the control group. This study is the first demonstration that DSCR3 is a novel epigenetic marker that can be an alternative to the RASSF1A for the prediction of EO-PE.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
This study aimed to investigate whether radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an alternative to surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the context of current guidelines.
Methods
This retrospective study included patients with normal portal pressure and serum bilirubin level who initially underwent liver resection or RFA for a single HCC of maximum size 3 cm. Between-group differences in cumulative rates of survival and recurrence specific for HCC were analysed in the entire cohort and in a propensity score-matched cohort.
Results
A total of 604 patients were enrolled, 273 in the liver resection group and 331 in the RFA group. The 5- and 10-year HCC-specific survival rates for the resection and RFA groups were 87·6 versus 82·1 per cent and 59·0 versus 61·2 per cent respectively (P = 0·214), whereas overall 5- and 10-year recurrence-free survival rates for the corresponding groups were 60·6 versus 39·4 per cent and 37·5 versus 25·1 per cent respectively (P < 0·001). In the propensity score-matched cohort (152 pairs), there were no differences in HCC-specific survival (hazard ratio (HR) 1·03 for RFAversus resection; P = 0·899), whereas recurrence-free survival again differed between the treatment groups (HR 1·75; P < 0·001). RFA was independently associated with poorer outcomes in terms of treatment-site recurrence-free survival (adjusted HR 1·66; P = 0·026), but not non-treatment-site recurrence-free survival (adjusted HR 1·15; P = 0·354).
Conclusion
Although RFA carries a higher risk of treatment-site recurrence than hepatic resection, it provides comparable overall survival in patients with a single small HCC without portal hypertension or a raised bilirubin level.

Abstract
We investigated the local electronic structure and magnetic properties of the cobaltite double perovskites La2CoIrO6 and La2CoPtO6 using Co L2,3-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Despite similarity in the local electronic structure (Co(2+) high-spin states) as well as in the crystal structure (P2(1)/n), only La2CoIrO6 exhibits substantial orbital and spin magnetic moments of Co(2+), whereas they are much weaker in the case of La2CoPtO6. This composition dependence is consistent with the results of magnetization measurements. The details of the mechanism of ferromagnetic ordering in the Co(2+) sublattice in La2CoIrO6 and the lack thereof in La2CoPtO6 are explained in terms of the orbital hybridization of the Co minority-spin t(2g) state and the Ir/Pt j(eff) = 1/2 state.

Abstract
Polymorphisms in the genes encoding enzymes in the folate metabolism pathway have been associated with male infertility and chromosome abnormalities. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase (MTR), and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) polymorphisms in fertile men and infertile men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). A case-control study comprising 85 infertile men with NOA and 246 fertile men as controls was carried out. MTHFR c.677C > T (rs1801133), MTHFR c.1298A > C (rs1801131), MTR c.2756A > G (rs1805087), and MTRR c.66A > G (rs1801394) polymorphisms were determined using the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. There were significant differences in AC + CC genotype (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.1-3.2) and C allele frequencies (OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.2-2.8) of MTHFR c.1298A > C polymorphism between NOA patients and controls after applying the Bonferroni correction. Moreover, the 1298AC genotype, 1298AC + CC genotype, and 1298C allele frequencies were statistically significant in NOA with chromosomal abnormalities and/or a Y chromosome deletion compared to the controls (AC genotype: OR = 3.0; AC + CC genotype: OR = 3.0; C allele: OR = 2.3). Considering the other polymorphisms, no differences were found between cases and controls. Our findings suggest the MTHFR c.1298A > C polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of male infertility, i.e., NOA.
