Abstract
In this work the photodegradation pathways and rates of oseltamivir ester (OE) and oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) were studied under artificial and natural solar irradiation with the goal of assessing the potential of photolysis as a removal mechanism in aquatic environments. The structures of the photoproducts of OE, elucidated by ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-QToF-MS), were proposed to originate from hydration of the cyclohexene ring (TP330), ester hydrolysis (TP284), a combination thereof (TP302), intramolecular cyclization involving the ester (TP312), and cleavage of the ethylpropoxy side chain (TP226). The only photoproduct detected in case of OC was postulated to correspond to the hydration of the α,β-unsaturated acid (TP302). Under simulated solar irradiation the degradation rate of OC was approximately 10 times slower than that of OE, with half-lives ranging from 48 h in ultrapure water to 12 h in surface water from Sant Joan Despi, Llobregat river. The photodegradation under natural solar irradiation during the season of pandemic Influenza peak incidence was about 150 days for OC and 15 days for OE. In general, the photoproducts proved to be more resistant toward further photodegradation than the parent antivirals. In a monitoring survey of surface waters from the Ebro river (NE Spain), OC and OE were detected along with the photoproducts TP330 and 312.

Abstract
In this work we evaluate the potential of grazing incidence X-ray scattering techniques in the investigation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) in a series of strongly absorbing model spin-coated polymer films which are amorphous, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and poly(carbonate bisphenol A), and in a weaker absorbing polymer, such as semicrystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride), over a narrow range of fluences. Irradiation was performed with pulses of 6 ns at 266 nm, and LIPSSs with period lengths similar to the laser wavelength and parallel to the laser polarization direction are formed by devitrification of the film surface at temperatures above the characteristic glass transition temperature of the polymers. No crystallization of the surface is induced by laser irradiation, and crystallinity of the material prevents LIPSS formation. The structural information obtained by both atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) correlates satisfactorily. Comparison of experimental and simulated GISAXS patterns suggests that LIPSSs can be well described considering a quasi-one-dimensional paracrystalline lattice and that irradiation parameters have an influence on the order of such a lattice.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the ability of Heidelberg Retina Tomography III (HRT 3) measurements to predict perimetry changes in patients with early glaucoma or suspected primary open-angle glaucoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and thirty two eyes with early glaucoma or suspected glaucoma with no changes in basal perimetry were prospectively selected and periodically evaluated over five years. The eyes were divided in two groups depending on the presence or absence of progression (changes in glaucoma perimetry). The association between morphometric parameters and baseline HRT 3 indices, glaucoma probability score (GPS) and Moorefield's Regression Analysis (MRA), and perimetry progression were studied using Cox multivariate regression analyses. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to illustrate the results. RESULTS Forty-eight eyes (36.36%) showed perimetry progression. Perimetry progression showed higher correlations with the disc area (p = 0.001), the cup area (p = 0.002) and the vertical cup disc area (p = 0.001). Multivariate regression analyses showed that eyes with baseline MRA or baseline GPA changes were at a higher risk of having perimetry abnormalities and a faster progression. CONCLUSIONS MRA and GPA indices are useful to predict perimetry progression in patients with early primary open-angle glaucoma or suspected glaucoma. These indices can be used as risk markers of functional progression in glaucoma.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The development of colonoscopy has increased the oral sodium phosphate (OSP) laxative use. OSP complications like hyperphosphatemia with acute and chronic kidney impairment with nephrocalcinosis have been reported. OBJECTIVE To describe and analyze acute and one year after OSP complications in low risk well hydrated patients. METHODS We performed a prospective study in 100 consecutive patients undergoing colonic cleansing with OSP for colonoscopy aged 35-74 year, ASA I-II. Exclusion criteria were congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, intestinal obstruction, decreased bowel motility, increased bowel permeability, hyperparathyroidism. Arterial pressure, hematocrit, serum osmolality, serum phosphate, ionic calcium, electrolytes (Na+, Cl-, K+), creatinine and urea were measured before and after OSP. The day before colonoscopy all the participants entered a 24 hr-period diet consisting in 4 litres of clear fluids and standard OSP dose (30 g at 17:00 and 30 gr at 22:00). Phosphatemia levels post OSP according to patient's weight (> or =, < or = 70 kg) and one year later kidney function were compared. RESULTS Mean age was 58.9 +/- 8.4 years, 66% of patients were women and mean weight was 71 +/- 13 kg. Kidney function showed no significant difference between pre and post OSP, and after one year values. Hyperphosphatemia appeared in 87%. Hyperphosphatemia was higher in patients with low weight (5.8 mg/dl vs 5.3 mg/dl, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION OSP complications were reduced through an adequate patient selection in order to avoid risk factors and an effective hydration. Phosphate overload was tolerated without symptoms. Considering high hyperphosphatemia incidence and its relation with weight, to adjust dose related to weight should be evaluated. There was no acute or a year later renal damage.

Abstract
We present an application of wavelet-based Information Theory quantifiers (Normalized Total Shannon Entropy, MPR-Statistical Complexity and Entropy-Complexity plane) on red blood cells membrane viscoelasticity characterization. These quantifiers exhibit important localization advantages provided by the Wavelet Theory. The present approach produces a clear characterization of this dynamical system, finding out an evident manifestation of a random process on the red cell samples of healthy individuals, and its sharp reduction of randomness on analyzing a human haematological disease, such as β-thalassaemia minor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the characteristics associated with human tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium bovis and M. caprae in Spain. DESIGN Retrospective study covering all M. bovis and M. caprae isolates identified at the National Mycobacterial Reference Laboratory (NRL) from 2004 to 2007. We studied the microbiological and epidemiological characteristics of patients and performed a genetic analysis of isolates. RESULTS The study covered 110 isolates (89 M. bovis and 21 M. caprae) that accounted for respectively 1.9% and 0.3% of the M. tuberculosis complex isolates available at the NRL. Data on risk of exposure to M. bovis or to M. caprae were available in 82 (74%) of the 110 cases, with 60 (73%) registering a probable or possible risk of exposure and 22 (27%) registering no risk. Probable exposure mainly included crop and livestock farmers, and possible exposure included patients born in countries with a high prevalence of bovine TB. Spoligotyping of strains yielded 36 different patterns, with SB0121, SB0134 and SB0157 being predominant. CONCLUSIONS In Spain, cases of human TB due to M. bovis and M. caprae represent a small proportion of all TB cases, and for a high percentage of cases this is linked to occupational exposure and coming from countries endemic for bovine TB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate long-term intraocular pressure results after trabeculectomy in low risk patients. Therefore differences among glaucoma type and previous medical treatment will be evaluated. METHODS A retrospective follow-up study, ranging between 3 and 20 years, was carried out on 965 trabeculectomy surgeries without any surgical- failure factor. Follow-up was carried-out one day, one week, one month, three months, six months and annually after surgery until the last visit. Primary open angle (POAG) (671 eyes), pseudoexfoliative (PSXG) (156 eyes) and chronic closure angle glaucomas (CCAG) (138 eyes) were included. IOP under 21 Hg mm without medical treatment was considered absolute success, relative success included those eyes with pressures under 21 and one or two daily antiglaucomatous drops. RESULTS Mean IOP ranged between 15 and 17 Hg mm. Mean IOP decreased from 30.7 to 37.4%. Relative success ten years after surgery was better in POAG; whereas absolute success resulted to be similar in POAG and PSXG. The group of patients less treated before surgery showed greater rate of absolute and relative success. CONCLUSIONS Trabeculectomy alone is an efficient technique in long-term tensional control for uncomplicated eyes. The group of patients less treated before surgery and POAG showed greater rate success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight and eating disorder (ED) are major public health problems in adolescents. AIMS To assess the association of overweight, body composition and anthropometric characteristics with the probability being at risk of ED. METHODS A two-phase study was used. 329 girls and 96 boys (aged 12-18 years) from an initial sample of 2967 adolescents were studied. The BMI, percentage of fat mass estimated by bioimpedance (FM(BIA)), waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHipr) were calculated. The Eating Attitudes Test, Youth's Inventory-4 and a questionnaire to evaluate social influences were administered. RESULTS A total of 34.7% of girls and 53.6% of boys at risk of ED were overweight (including obesity). For girls, overweight frequency was significantly higher in risk ED group than in control group. Increases of one point in the BMI or FM(BIA) increased the probability of being at risk of ED by 12% (3.0-19.0) and 4% (0.0-8.0), respectively. An increase in WHipr was negatively associated with ED risk. Smoking and symptoms of dysthymia and the genralized anxiety disorder also increase the probability of being at risk of ED in adolescent girls. In adolescent boys, these relations were not observed. CONCLUSIONS The higher BMI and the percentage of FM(BIA) are associated with greater risk of ED in adolescent girls, when psychological factors are present. Increases in the WHipr, characteristic of childhood body is negatively associated with that risk.

Abstract
Results for naturally occurring (7)Be, (210)Pb, (40)K, (214)Bi, (214)Pb, (212)Pb, (228)Ac and (208)Tl and anthropogenic (137)Cs in airborne particulate matter in the Barcelona area during the period from January 2001 to December 2005 are presented and discussed. The (212)Pb and (208)Tl, (214)Bi and (214)Pb, (7)Be and (210)Pb radionuclide levels showed a significant correlation with each other, with correlation coefficients of 0.99, 0.78 and 0.69, respectively, suggesting similar origin/behaviour of these radionuclides in the air. Caessium-137 and Potassium-40 were transported to the air as resuspended particle from the soil. The (7)Be and (210)Pb concentrations showed similar seasonal variations, with a tendency for maximum concentrations during the summer months. An inverse relationship was observed between the (7)Be, (210)Pb, (40)K and (137)Cs concentrations and weekly rainfall, indicating washout of atmospheric aerosols carrying these radionuclides.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oocyte cryopreservation is a useful tool for preserving the fertility of cancer patients at risk of losing ovarian function due to undergoing potentially sterilising therapies. Results obtained with different cryopreservation protocols have been disappointing, particularly those obtained with slow cooling procedures. The efficacy of vitrification as an application in clinical practice has recently been demonstrated. The aim of this study is to report results obtained with the Cryotop method of oocyte vitrification in a population of healthy women and to point out its potential usefulness for fertility preservation in oncological patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study population consisting of non-oncological patients included 47 oocyte donors and 57 recipients undergoing an oocyte donation cycle of assisted reproductive technology (ART). A total of 693 mature metaphase II oocytes were collected following ovarian stimulation using long protocol down-regulation plus gonadotropin administration. Vitrification was carried out by means of the Cryotop method. Oocytes were donated to a compatible recipient after endometrial preparation. RESULTS Of the 693 oocytes, 666 (96.1%) survived. A total of 487 (73.1%) were fertilised successfully. One hundred and seventeen embryos were transferred to 57 recipients. Pregnancy rate per transfer and implantation rates were 63.2% and 38.5% respectively. Twenty-eight healthy babies were later born. CONCLUSIONS Oocyte cryo-banking by means of the Cryotop vitrification method represents a viable option for healthy women, producing excellent survival rates and a clinical outcome similar to that obtained with fresh oocytes. This approach could potentially be used in cancer patients who want to safeguard their fertility. Cancer patients could potentially benefit from this approach by storing their oocytes before the onset of the oncological therapy.

Abstract
A white solid compound was isolated from the chloroform extract of the leaves of Senna villosa. The material was identified by (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, IR and EM methods as (8-hydroxymethylen)-trieicosanyl acetate, a new compound with biological activity, which was tested in vitro at concentrations of 1.65, 3.3 and 6.6 microg/ml for inhibition of the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes and tripomastigotes. We observed inhibition of growth at all concentrations tested, and the effect at concentrations of 3.3 and 6.6 microg/ml was greater than that of gentian violet (positive control). At the concentration of 6.6 microg/ml, the compound showed the greatest inhibitory effect against the growth of both forms of the parasite.

Abstract
In this work, the waste from 10 forest species of Cantabria have been characterized from the point of view of energy. The studied species were the waste of: Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens, the hybrid E. globulusxE. nitens, Eucalyptus viminalis, Eucalyptus smithii, Eucalyptus regnans, Eucalyptus gunni, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur and Pinus radiata. The leaves were the tree part with the greatest NCV (net calorific value) in all the species. The best results were obtained for the leaves of E. smithii (24.5 MJ/kg), F. sylvatica (22.8 MJ/kg) and E. nitens (22.5 MJ/kg), at minimum moisture. Values around 65,000 MJ per hectare and year were obtained for the Eucalyptus spp., and 47,000 MJ per hectare and year for the P. radiata. The economic-environmental analysis revealed that the use of the forest waste for energy production would mean an approximate annual income of 8 Meuro and would fix the annual CO(2) emitted by the Cantabrian industries at 78%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and hormonal profile in cardiac hypertrophy resulting from sequentially applied overloads. METHODS We studied Sprague-Dawley rats with renovascular hypertension (RV), where pressure overload predominates, or deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt (DS), where volume overload predominates, at 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, and the combination of both models in inverse sequence: RV 2 weeks/DS 2 weeks (RV2/DS2) and DS 2 weeks/RV 2 weeks (DS2/RV2), and their sham controls (Sh). RESULTS Blood pressure and cardiomyocyte diameter increased to a similar extent in RV and DS at 2 and 4 weeks and in combined models. Cardiomyocyte length increased remarkably in the DS4 group. Circulating atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was elevated in all hypertensive groups after 2 and 4 weeks. The RV2/DS2 group showed similar plasma ANP levels to RV4, but DS2/RV2 exhibited a three-fold increase in ANP levels (P<0.001 versus Sh4, DS2 and DS4). Atrial ANP mRNA remained unchanged in all groups. DS treatment alone or in combination with RV increased left ventricular ANP mRNA, meanwhile only RV treatment increased left ventricular B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) mRNA. Ventricular ANP expression levels, but not circulating ANP, correlated with both cardiomyocyte diameter (r=0.859, P<0.01) and length (r=0.848, P<0.01). Renal expression of natriuretic peptide receptor C (NPR-C) was unchanged in RV4 but decreased to a similar extent in the DS4 group and both combined treatments. CONCLUSION Morphometric patterns seem to be more related to the paracrine function of the heart than to the secretion of ANP and the endocrine function. Plasma ANP in the DS2/RV2 group could indicate a different evolution of the remodelling process. ANP expression seems to be a more sensitive marker for volume than for pressure overload.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the evolution of donation and organ transplantation in Uruguay, after the initiation of a program of transplant coordination, which began in 2000. The total number of effective donors increased from 28.7 per million people (pmp) in 2000 to 48.1 pmp in 2005, which constituted an increase of 75%. The number of real donors also increased from 10 pmp in 2000 to 20.6 pmp in 2005, more than a 100% increase, with a cadaveric renal transplantation rate of 36 pmp (2005). The conversion of effective to real donors (RD/ED) increased from 0.125 to 0.42. Familial refusal decreased from 62.1% in 2000 to 19% in 2005, which constituted a decrease of 70%. We concluded that implementation of transplant coordinators and involvement of intensive care medical doctors in coordination have had a strong impact on these results.
