Abstract
The reliability of clinical signs to differentiate between autosomal dominant ichthyosis (ADI) or sex-linked ichthyosis (SLI) were assessed. SLI was defined as ichthyosis in combination with steroid sulphatase deficiency. Age of onset and format of the scales were found to be reliable signs to ascertain the diagnosis of ADI or SLI. The ADI-like appearance in histopathology seems to be of little diagnostic value.

Abstract
The pathologic findings in the skin in a new case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) are detailed and are discussed in view of previously reported data on TSS in the literature. Necrolysis of keratinocytes at different levels of the epidermis in combination with a predominantly perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate were characteristic features in lesional skin biopsy specimens obtained 5 days after the onset of acute illness and during the development of erythroderma with purpura and diffuse intravasal coagulation. Prominent vascular changes in the skin, which have not been reported before in TSS, were excited endothelial cells in combination with the presence of thrombi in the superficial capillaries. Histopathologic investigations of the dermatitis in TSS can be helpful in differentiating this syndrome from other acute toxic skin eruptions.

Abstract
We report the case of a 30-year-old female patient with non-von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis. In our opinion it does not fit within a system of classification recently described. Clinically, the abnormality resembled a giant pigmented nevus; however, light- and electron microscopy findings were consistent with those of a neurofibroma. No other symptoms of classic neurofibromatosis or other diseases were present. The family history showed no evidence of neurofibromatosis. To the best of our knowledge this manifestation of non-von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis has not been previously described. The cause and the inheritance pattern of this variant are not clear.

Abstract
The effects of repeated topical application of a strong glucocorticosteroid (GCS) on patch test responses and the inflammatory infiltrate were studied in twenty nickel allergic patients. Patch test responses were strongly inhibited in 18 out of 20 patients. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed marked reductions in CD1+(T6+) Langerhans cells, activated inflammatory T cells and of mast cells in the skin. It is concluded that GCS suppress contact allergic responses by reduction, or functional inhibition of antigen presenting cells. The reduced number of mast cells release less vasoactive mediators, inhibiting recruitment of inflammatory cells.

Abstract
The expression of human leukocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) and beta 2-microglobulin on the tumor cells and their correlation (if any) to the degree and the composition of the peritumoral mononuclear infiltrate were studied in 37 basal cell carcinomas from 32 patients with an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. In 36 of 37 basal cell carcinomas (97%) there was no expression of HLA-DR on tumor cells of basal cell carcinoma. In 13 of 37 basal cell carcinomas (35%) beta 2-microglobulin was expressed on the tumor cells. Both a diffuse cytoplasmic and a membrane staining were observed in only six of these 13 basal a diffuse cytoplasmic and a membrane staining were observed in only six of these 13 basal cell carcinomas; in the other seven basal cell carcinomas only a diffuse cytoplasmic staining was observed. In all 37 basal cell carcinomas there was membrane staining for beta 2-microglobulin in the normal epidermis. The intensity of staining in the normal epidermis was always stronger than that in the tumor nests. There was a varying degree of peritumoral immune infiltrate in all basal cell carcinomas. It comprised mainly T cells (mean percentage 57 +/- 15). In the group of patients with basal cell carcinoma with moderate to heavy infiltrate the mean percentage of T cells was 63 +/- 13, which was significantly higher than the mean percentage of T cells (46% +/- 14%) in the group of patients with basal cell carcinoma with a mild infiltrate. This difference was mainly the result of an increase in T helper cells.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
We investigated the dermal inflammatory infiltrate and the expression of HLA-DR and beta 2-microglobulin on the tumour cells in 8 Bowen's disease (BD) using a series of monoclonal antibodies. The inflammatory infiltrate was classified as mild, moderate or heavy. The infiltrate in all cases consisted mainly of T cells (55 +/- 21%) and where the T helper (TH) subset predominated over the T suppressor/cytotoxic (TS/C) subset (TH/TS/C ratio of 2.4 +/- 1.0). The mean percentage of HLA-DR positive cells was 58 +/- 18%, Langerhans cells (LC) 4 +/- 1% and Leu-M5 positive cells (monocytes/macrophages) 9 +/- 2%. The mean percentage of B cells and natural killer (NK) cells was 4 +/- 5% and 1 +/- 2% respectively. B cells and NK cells did not invade any of the tumours. In the 5 BD with moderate or heavy infiltrate, TH cells, TS/C cells and Leu-M5 positive cells did invade the tumour. In the tumour area where there was invasion, the number of LC was increased and HLA-DR was expressed on the cells. beta 2-microglobulin was generally expressed on the tumour cells of BD. We concluded that there is evidence for a T cell-mediated anti-tumour immune response which may account for the infrequent invasive growth in BD.

Abstract
Sensitization to epichlorohydrin (ECH) is reported in 6 patients with occupational contact allergy. In 2 cases, an isolated positive test to ECH was found. In the remaining 4 cases, concomitant positive reactions were seen to "ICDRG epoxy resin" (MW 385) and to liquid epoxy resin (MW 370). Allergy to bisphenol A was not seen in the patients. 5 patients worked in an epoxy resin plant. Adequate preventive measures to avoid skin contact with ECH are required to prevent ECH sensitization becoming a more serious industrial hazard.

Abstract
The ingredients responsible for allergy to cosmetics were determined in 119 patients suffering from cosmetic-related contact dermatitis. Most reactions (56.3%) were caused by skin care products, followed by nail cosmetics (13.4%), perfumes (8.4%), and hair cosmetics (5.9%). Preservatives were most frequently implicated (32.0%), followed by fragrances (26.5%) and emulsifiers (14.3%). By far the most important cosmetic allergen was Kathon CG, (a preservative system containing, as active ingredients, a mixture of methylisothiazolinone and methyl chloroisothiazolinone) reacting in 33 patients (27.7%). Other frequent causes of cosmetic-related contact allergic reactions were toluenesulfonamide/formaldehyde resin in nail hardener and/or nail lacquer (15 patients [12.6%]), and oleamidopropyl dimethylamine, an emulsifier in baby body lotion (13 patients [10.9%]).

Abstract
The expression of the low molecular weight cytokeratins (K) 7, 8, 18, 19 and the high molecular weight cytokeratin 10 in 21 basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was studied using seven different monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) with specific anti-cytokeratin activity. MoAbs RCK 105 (anti-K7), RPN 1164 (anti-low molecular weight cytokeratins of basic group), Ks 19.1 (anti-K19) and Cam 5.2 (anti-K8, K18, K19) reacted positively but inconsistently in the BCC that were examined. MoAbs 1166 (anti-K8) and RGE53 (anti-K18) did not react at all. MoAb RKSE 60 (anti-K10) did not react with the tumor cells. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that cytokeratins 7 and 19 are expressed in BCC (43% and 71%, respectively), whereas cytokeratin 8 is not expressed.

Abstract
In two cases of elastosis perforans serpiginosa (EPS) new clinical and laboratory data are described and discussed. In Case 1, EPS was triggered by penicillamine-D within an unusually short period (about one year). In Case 2, EPS was apparently primarily triggered by a vena puncture. In both cases the light and electron microscopic findings were strictly compatible with EPS. These findings are summarized. In the active lesions of both cases increased numbers of helper T-cells and Langerhans cells were shown, while cytotoxic-suppressor T-cells were nearly completely absent. Leu 3a+ cells and Leu 6+ cells were also present in the inactive central area of the lesions. The data presented may cast doubt on the relationship of immunological findings to pathogenetic events in the disease.

Abstract
The relationship between contact allergy to formaldehyde and positive patch test reactions to DMDM hydantoin was investigated. 35 formaldehyde-allergic patients were patch tested with serial dilutions of formaldehyde (0.1%-0.3%-1.0% aq.) and DM hydantoin (the non-formaldehyde-containing parent compound of DMDM hydantoin). 21 were also patch tested with MDM hydantoin (1 molecule formaldehyde) in serial dilutions: 7 (33%) reacted to 1 or more concentrations. The other 14 were also tested with DMDM hydantoin (2 molecules formaldehyde) in serial dilutions: 8 (57%) reacted to 1 or more concentrations. Patients patch-test-positive to formaldehyde 0.1% and/or 0.3% tended to show more patch test reactivity to (D)MDM hydantoin than those who reacted only to 1%. Aqueous solutions of (D)MDM hydantoin in concentrations as used in cosmetic products therefore contain enough free formaldehyde to cause dermatitis in a patch test system in some formaldehyde-allergic patients: 12 such patients applied a cream containing 1% DMDM hydantoin to the flexor aspect of the lower arm twice daily for 1 week; 4 (33%) developed dermatitis. The use of a cream containing 0.25% DMDM hydantoin in these 4 patients still caused dermatitis in 1 and provoked itching in another. An increase in the use of DMDM hydantoin in cosmetic products will also inevitable increase the risk of cosmetic dermatitis in consumers allergic to formaldehyde.

Abstract
We investigated the peritumoral inflammatory infiltrate in 22 basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from 18 patients using a series of monoclonal antibodies. In all the 22 BCC the infiltrate consisted mainly of T cells (55 +/- 15%) and only in three cases an invasion of the tumor nests by these cells was observed. The T helper (TH) subset predominated over the T suppressor/cytotoxic (TS/C) subset (TH/TS/C ratio of 1.9 +/- 0.8). In 8 of 22 BCC mild infiltrate was observed with 48 +/- 13% T cells and a TH/TS/C ratio of 1.5 +/- 0.6. In 14 of 22 BCC moderate to heavy infiltrate with 59 +/- 15% T cells and a TH/TS/C ratio of 2.0 +/- 1.0 was observed. There was a significant difference in the percentage of T cells in BCC with moderate to heavy infiltrate and that in BCC with mild infiltration. The mean percentage of HLA-DR+ cells was 54 +/- 11%; Langerhans cells (LC) 4 +/- 5%; and Leu-M5+ (monocytes and macrophages) 16 +/- 11%. Less than 2% Leu-14+(B) cells were seen in the infiltrate. The mean percentage of Leu-7+ (natural killer) cells was 4 +/- 4%, and only 1 of 22 BCC Leu-7+ cells invaded tumor nests, contacting with tumor cells. From these results we concluded that T cells play a major role in the defence against BCC proliferation. The main role of Langerhans cells and Leu-M5+ cells may be that of antigen presentation. B cells and NK cells probably play a minor role in the local defence against BCC proliferation.
