Abstract
We demonstrate a sensor card with cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) for terahertz (THz) waves generated from a nonlinear crystal pumped by a table-top laser. A beam profile of the THz waves is successfully visualized as color change by the sensor card without additional electronic devices, power supplies, and connecting cables. Above the power density of 4.3 mW/cm2, the approximate beam diameter of the THz waves is measured using the hue image that is digitalized from the picture of the sensor card. The sensor card is low in cost, portable, and suitable for various situations such as THz imaging and alignment of THz systems.

Abstract
The human discs, large homolog 1 gene (DLG1) is mapped to the schizophrenia-susceptibility locus 3q29, and it encodes a scaffold protein that interacts with the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor presumably dysregulated in schizophrenia. In the current study, we have newly identified a splicing variant of DLG1, which is transcribed from an unreported 95-base-pair exon (exon 3b) and is labeled 3b(+). We investigated the mRNA expression of 3b(+) in the post-mortem dorsolateral prefrontal cortices of patients with psychiatric disorders, obtained from The Stanley Medical Research Institute, and examined the potential association of the expression with the genotype of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs3915512 located within exon 3b. A real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction revealed that the mRNA levels of 3b(+) were significantly reduced in patients with early-onset schizophrenia (onset at <18 years old, P=0.0003) but not in those with non-early-onset schizophrenia, early-onset or non-early-onset bipolar disorder or in the controls. Furthermore, the genotype at the rs3915512 SNP was closely associated with the levels of 3b(+) mRNA expression. It is inferred that the T allele fails to meet the exonic splicing enhancer consensus, thus resulting in skipping of exon 3b, leading to the expression of 3b(-) (the previously known DLG1 variant) but not 3b(+). Because all the subjects with early-onset schizophrenia in the current study possess the T/T genotype, the reduced level of the DLG1 3b(+) transcript may be involved in the susceptibility and/or pathophysiology of early-onset schizophrenia.

Abstract
Pancreatic graft thrombosis is the primary cause of nonimmunologic graft loss, with an incidence ranging from 5% to 15%. Therefore, developing a screening test to detect graft thrombosis after pancreatic transplantation is important. We created a screening test to assess graft thrombosis after pancreatic transplantation using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) with Sonazoid in addition to Doppler ultrasonography. A total of seven patients were examined using CEUS after undergoing pancreatic transplantation. All patients were observed to have a clear blood flow from the horizontal region to the peripheral region of the splenic vein in the pancreatic graft, and only one of the seven patients exhibited a blood flow in the horizontal portion of the splenic vein on Doppler ultrasonography performed immediately after pancreatic transplantation. Results from CEUS with Sonazoid showed the blood flow in the splenic vein and parenchyma of the pancreatic graft in detail, despite the slow and lateral blood flow in the splenic vein of the pancreatic graft immediately after transplantation.

Abstract
The effects of the high-molecular-weight growth factors, transferrin and bovine serum albumin (BSA), on antibody production were analyzed quantitatively in continuous hollow-fiber cultivation over a period of 60 days. Transferrin enhanced cell growth but had no significant effect on the specific antibody production rate, whereas BSA significantly enhanced antibody production. The antibody production rate was increased 4- and 14-fold respectively by feeding BSA at 2 and 5 g L(-1) into the EC side of the system (the side connected to the cell-containing outer part of the hollow-fiber unit) compared with the production achieved without BSA. Addition of 5 g L(1) BSA into the IC side of the system (the side connected to the inner part of the hollow-fiber unit) resulted in a 2.5-fold increase in the antibody production rate. The effect of BSA was also analyzed using the perfusion culture system with a separation unit. When fresh medium containing either 2 or 5 g L(-1) BSA was fed into the reactor, both the specific growth rate and specific death rate increased, while the specific antibody production rate was increased 2- and 25-fold, respectively, by feeding BSA at these two concentrations compared with no addition. Comparing the two systems, the increase in the antibody production rate achieved with the hollow-fiber system was threefold greater than that in the perfusion culture system with the same concentration of BSA feeding. Abstract
BACKGROUND Although various reports have shown that β-antagonists provide neuroprotective effects after cerebral ischaemia, their effect on spatial memory after transient focal ischaemia is not known. We investigated the treatment of β1-antagonists on neurological outcome spatial memory for 1 month after focal cerebral ischaemia in rats. METHODS Male rats randomly received an i.v. infusion of saline 0.5 ml h(-1), esmolol 200 μg kg(-1) min(-1), or landiolol 50 μg kg(-1) min(-1). Infusion was initiated 30 min before middle cerebral artery occlusion and continued for 24 h. The infarct areas in the hippocampus and striatum were measured after the final retention trial and neurological examinations. RESULTS Neurological deficit scores in the landiolol- and esmolol-treated rats were significantly lower than in the control rats at 1, 4, 7, and 11 days after ischaemia (P<0.05). Using the Morris water maze to assess spatial memory, we found that escape latency and swimming path length to the platform were significantly shorter in the landiolol-treated rats, compared with the saline-treated rats at 4 and 11 days after ischaemia (P<0.05). The mean (SD) infarct area was 19.1 (8.0)% in the striatum and 18.6 (10.0)% in the hippocampus of the landiolol-treated rats, and 16.8 (14.0)% and 16.8 (15.0)% in the striatum and hippocampus, respectively, of esmolol-treated rats. This was significantly less than in control rats [striatum 31.7 (14.0)% and hippocampus 29.8 (13.0)%, P<0.05]. CONCLUSIONS The current study indicates that although esmolol and landiolol provided long-term neuroprotection in terms of histological outcome, they had no effect on neurological outcome and spatial memory retention.

Abstract
Contralateral pneumothorax is one of severe complications after lung resection. We present our experiences with surgical treatment of 5 cases [case 4 is under the percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS) assistance] of contralateral pneumothorax after lung resection. All cases were men and not able to stop smoking, the disease caused by lung resection was lung cancer 3 and tuberculosis 2. Operative procedure was lobectomy 4 and pneumonectomy 1. Tracheal intubation was done before radiological confirmation of pneumothorax in 4 cases. Immediately after diagnosis all patients underwent chest drainage. Because the contralateral pneumothorax after lung resection is severe complication, we thought that surgical treatment is necessary. Though the thoracoscopic surgery under the PCPS assistance is also possible, it seems that a small thoracotomy with adjusting ventilation by anesthetist are more favorable. Accurate diagnosis and treatment is the key for success of treatment. The patient who receives lung resection due to lung cancer often has emphysema, and the risk of contralateral pneumothorax after the operation should also be explained.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the antifungal effect of Ethiopian multiflora honey against Candida species isolated from the oral cavity of AIDS patients. Oral rinses were obtained from 13 AIDS patients and cultured on CHROMagar plates at 37°C for 48 hours. Candida species were identified by microbiological and molecular techniques. The antifungal effect of the honey sample on Candida was investigated by an agar dilution technique. Susceptibility of the Candida species to fluconazole was tested following a semi-modified microdilution method. Growth of both fluconazole-susceptible and -resistant Candida species was inhibited with a minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of 35–40% (v/v) honey. The MFC of different Candida species was not significantly different ( P > 0.05). From the total of 25 Candida isolates tested for susceptibility, 11 (44%), eight (32%) and six (24%) of the isolates were sensitive (minimum inhibitory concentrations [MICs] < 8 µg/mL), susceptible (dose-dependent: MICs 16–32 µg/mL) and resistant (MICs > 64 µg/mL) to fluconazole, respectively. Ethiopian multiflora honey has antifungal activity against fluconazole-resistant Candida species isolated from the oral cavity of AIDS patients. This supports the existing folkloric practice of using honey to treat oral lesions. Nevertheless, identification of the bioactive agents in honey, their clinical evaluation and pharmacological standardization are crucial.
