Abstract
UNLABELLED Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major etiological factor of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the postoperative prognostic value of the virological factors assayed directly from liver tissue has never been investigated. To address this issue, 185 liver samples obtained from the noncancerous part of surgically removed HBV-associated HCC tissues were subjected to virological analysis. Assayed factors included the amount of HBV-DNA in the liver tissues; genotype; and the presence of the HBV precore stop codon G1896A mutation, basal core promoter A1762T/G1764A mutation, and pre-S deletions/stop codon mutation. All virological factors and clinicopathological factors were subjected to Cox proportional hazard model analysis to estimate postoperative survival. It was found that an HBV-DNA level >3.0 × 10(7) copies/g of liver tissue and the presence of the basal core promoter mutation independently predicted disease-free (adjusted hazard ratio 1.641 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.010-2.667] and 2.075 [95% CI 1.203-3.579], respectively) and overall (adjusted hazard ratio 2.807 [95% CI 1.000-7.880] and 5.697 [95% CI 1.678-19.342], respectively) survival. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that in-frame, short stretch (<100 bp) pre-S deletions, but not large fragment (>100 bp) pre-S deletions, were significantly associated with poorer disease-free (P = 0.005) and overall (P = 0.020) survival. A hot deletion region located between codons 107 and 141 of the pre-S sequence was identified for the short stretch pre-S deletion mutants. CONCLUSION The amount of HBV-DNA in liver tissue and the presence of the basal core promoter mutation were two independent predictors for postoperative survival in HCC. A short stretch pre-S deletion located between codons 107 and 141 was strongly associated with a poorer postoperative prognosis.

Abstract
AIM: To analyze the predictive factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in early gastric cancer (EGC).
METHODS: Data from patients surgically treated for gastric cancers between January 1994 and December 2007 were retrospectively collected. Clinicopathological factors were analyzed to identify predictive factors for LNM.
RESULTS: Of the 2936 patients who underwent gastrectomy and lymph node dissection, 556 were diagnosed with EGC and included in this study. Among these, 4.1% of patients had mucosal tumors (T1a) with LNM while 24.3% of patients had submucosal tumors with LNM. Univariate analysis found that female gender, tumors ≥ 2 cm, tumor invasion to the submucosa, vascular and lymphatic involvement were significantly associated with a higher rate of LNM. On multivariate analysis, tumor size, lymphatic involvement, and tumor with submucosal invasion were associated with LNM.
CONCLUSION: Tumor with submucosal invasion, size ≥ 2 cm, and presence of lymphatic involvement are predictive factors for LNM in EGC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The most common mesenchymal tumors of gastrointestinal tract are gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). These tumors originate from muscularis propria layer. Tissue diagnosis is usually difficult by endoscopic mucosal biopsy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of endoscopic ultrasound-guided Tru-Cut biopsy (EUS-TCB) for GISTs before treatment. METHODOLOGY A total of six patients in the period between June 2006 and May 2009 were included in this study. EUS-TCB was performed with a 19-gauge core needle to obtain sufficient specimen for pathological and immunohistochemical studies. All tumor sizes were larger than 2 cm. Specimen size and the number of needle passes were both recorded. RESULTS Core tissues were successfully procured by EUS-TCB in all tumors (100%). The mean tumor size was 50 mm (range 30-75 mm). The final pathological diagnosis was c-kit positive stromal tumor in five patients and leiomyoma in one patient. The mean size of specimen was 8 mm (range 3-13 mm) and the mean number of needle passes was 2 (range 1-3). No patient developed complications after the procedure. CONCLUSION EUS-TCB is a safe, quicker procedure that offers sufficient tissue acquisition for pathological diagnosis and clinical decision-making in patients with GISTs.

Abstract
Recently the authors proposed a new staging and grading system for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) that takes into account necroinflammatory activity and histological heterogeneity. Herein is proposed a convenient version of this system. Scores for fibrosis, bile duct loss, and chronic cholestasis were combined for staging: stage 1, total score of 0; stage 2, score 1-3; stage 3, score 4-6; and stage 4, score 7-9. Cholangitis activity (CA) and hepatitis activity (HA) were graded as CA0-3, and HA0-3, respectively. Analysis of interobserver agreement was then conducted. Digital images of 62 needle liver biopsy specimens of PBC were recorded as virtual slides on DVDs that were sent to 28 pathologists, including five located overseas. All participants were able to apply this version in all 62 cases. For staging, kappa was 0.385 (fair agreement) and the concordance rate was 63.9%. For necroinflammatory activity, the kappa and concordance rate were 0.110 (slight agreement) and 36.9% for CA, and 0.197 (slight agreement) and 47% for HA, respectively. In conclusion, this new staging and grading system for PBC seems to be more convenient and practical than those used at present, but more instruction and guidance are recommended for the grading of necroinflammatory activity in practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a key role in signaling necessary for tissue remodeling and cell survival. However, signals from the ECM altered by disease, e.g. inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis and arthritis, may lead to apoptosis or programmed cell death of resident cells. Previously, we found that a disease-associated fibronectin fragment triggers apoptosis of primary human periodontal ligament cells via a novel apoptotic pathway in which the tumor suppressor, p53, is transcriptionally downregulated. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used immunofluorescence, transfection assays, western blotting and ELISAs to show that p53 is degraded by a proteasomal pathway in response to a proapoptotic disease-associated fibronectin fragment. RESULTS We found that in these apoptotic conditions, p53 is further downregulated by post-translational ubiquitination and subsequent targeting to proteasomes for degradation. Pretreatment of cells with the proteasomal inhibitors MG132 and lactacystin rescued the cells from apoptosis. The p53 levels in cells transfected with ubiquitin small interfering RNA were resistant to degradation induced by the proapoptotic fibronectin fragment, showing that ubiquitination is important for the proapoptotic fibronectin fragment-induced degradation of p53. CONCLUSION These data show that a proapoptotic fibronectin matrix induces ubiquitination and degradation of p53 in the proteasome as part of a novel mechanism of apoptosis associated with inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) is a peculiar splenic vascular lesion that is characterized by marked stromal sclerosis and the presence of plasma cells, which shares histopathological features associated with IgG4-related sclerosing disease. The cinicopathological features of 10 cases of SANT were reviewed and immunohistochemistry with IgG4 and IgG antibodies was performed. Nine other various splenic lesions served as controls. Five cases of SANT were found incidentally. Three cases of SANT had multiple tumors and five had associated abdominal disseminated calcifying fibrous tumors (CFT). IgG4+ plasma cells were found in all of the cases of SANT and in calcifying fibrous tumors. The densities of IgG4+ and IgG+ cells and the IgG4/IgG ratios were significantly higher in SANT than in control spleens (P= 0.001, 0.006, and 0.028, respectively). Serum IgG4 concentration was elevated in one case. In conclusion, SANT can occur either as a solitary or as multiple tumors. Frequent association with abdominal disseminated CFT simulating carcinomatosis was observed. A statistically significant number of IgG4+ plasma cells was found in all of the cases of SANT and the associated CFT. Whether they are related to the IgG4-related sclerosing disease or not is debatable and warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV), a thrips-transmitted, tentative species in the genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae, was first identified in solanaceous crops, but also infects several ornamental crops such as orchid (4), gloxinia (3), and calla lily (1). From 2005 to 2007, virus-like yellow ringspots were observed on the leaves of amaryllis (Hippeastrum hybridum Hort.) and blood lily (Haemanthus multiflorus Martyn.) plants cultured in screenhouses and a private garden, respectively. Three of several hundred amaryllis plants in screenhouses from two places were observed as showing yellow ringspot symptoms and one of six blood lily plants was observed as showing similar yellow ringspot symptoms. Sap extracts from symptomatic leaves were inoculated to Chenopodium quinoa Willd. and the resulting local lesions were passaged three successive times to C. quinoa for virus isolation. Using the tospovirus genus-specific primers gL3637 and gL4435c designed from the conserved region in the L RNA (2), DNA fragments of the expected size of 800 bp were amplified by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR from field samples and local lesions from C. quinoa. Extracts from the diseased plants and local lesions of C. quinoa reacted strongly with antiserum against the nucleocapsid (N) protein of CaCV in ELISA and western blotting. To confirm the identity of this virus, we amplified the N gene from three amaryllis and one blood lily source using primer pair WN2328 and WN3534 designed from the S RNA of Watermelon silver mottle virus (1), and these products were cloned and sequenced. The sequence from each virus isolate was determined from three independent clones. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of N genes for the blood lily isolate (GenBank Accession No. EF101344) and three amaryllis isolates (GenBank Accession Nos. EF101343, EF137177, and FJ185170) had identities greater than 97% with that of a CaCV isolate infecting Capsicum spp. found in Australia (GenBank Accession No. AY036057). Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony showed that these sequences clustered with CaCV. These results show that the virus identified from amaryllis and blood lily that were expressing yellow ringspot symptoms are isolates of CaCV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CaCV naturally infecting amaryllis and blood lily and it could become an important threat to ornamental production in Taiwan. References: (1) C. C. Abstract
AIM: To clarify the benefit of surgical excision for patients with extrahepatic metastases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 140 patients with pathologically proven extrahepatic metastases of HCC and evaluated the outcomes of those who had undergone surgical resection (SR) for extrahepatic metastatic lesions. Prognoses made on the basis of extrahepatic metastatic sites were also examined.
RESULTS: The survival rates of patients who underwent SR of extrahepatic metastases were significantly better than those of patients who did not receive SR. For the SR group, 1- and 3-year survival rates were 24% and 7%, respectively, while for the non-resection group, the survival rates were 8% and 0%, respectively (P < 0.0001). Survival rates related to metastatic sites were also significantly superior after SR of extrahepatic metastases: median survivals were 32 mo with lung metastasis, 10 mo with bone metastasis, 6.1 mo with brain metastasis.
CONCLUSION: SR can provide survival benefits for patients with 1 or 2 isolated extrahepatic metastases and who concurrently exhibit good hepatic functional reserve and general performance status as well as successful treatment of intrahepatic HCC.

Abstract
Background CD133 was detected in several types of cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which raised the possibility of stem cell origin in a subset of cancers. However, reappearance of embryonic markers in de-differentiated malignant cells was commonly observed. It remained to be elucidated whether CD133-positive HCCs were indeed of stem cell origin or they were just a group of poorly differentiated cells acquiring an embryonic marker. The aim of this study was to investigate the significance of CD133 expression in HCC in an area endemic for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to gain insights on this issue. Methods 154 HCC patients receiving total removal of HCCs were included. 104 of them (67.5%) were positive for HBV infection. The cancerous and adjacent non-cancerous liver tissues were subjected for Western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis for CD133 expression. The data were correlated with clinical parameters, patient survivals, and p53 expression. Results Of 154 patients, 24 (15.6%) had CD133 expression in HCC. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that CD133 expression was negatively correlated with the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios were 0.337 (95%CI 0.126 - 0.890) and 0.084 (95%CI 0.010 - 0.707), respectively. On the other hand, p53 expression was positively associated with the presence of HBsAg in univariate analysis. The unadjusted odds ratio was 4.203 (95%CI 1.110 - 18.673). Survival analysis indicated that both CD133 and p53 expression in HCC predicted poor disease-free survival (P = 0.009 and 0.001, respectively), whereas only CD133 expression predicted poor overall survival (P = 0.001). Cox proportional hazard model showed that p53 and CD133 expression were two independent predictors for disease-free survival. The hazard ratios were 1.697 (95% CI 1.318 - 2.185) and 2.559 (95% CI 1.519 - 4.313), respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Conclusion In area where HBV infection accounts for the major attributive risk of HCC, CD133 expression in HCC was negatively associated with the presence of HBsAg, implicating a non-viral origin of CD133-positive HCC. Additionally, CD133 expression predicted poor disease-free survival independently of p53 expression, arguing for two distinguishable hepatocarcinogenesis pathways.

Abstract
Enterovesical fistulas are not uncommon in patients with inflammatory or malignant colonic disease, however, fistulas secondary to primary bladder carcinomas are extremely rare. We herein reported a patient presenting with intractable urinary tract infection due to enterovesical fistula formation caused by a squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. This patient underwent en bloc resection of the bladder dome and involved ileum, and recovered uneventfully without urinary complaint. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature.

Abstract
The phenomenon of concomitant tumor immunity involves a tumor-bearing host rejecting another similar tumor at a distant site and suggests the existence of tumor-specific immunity. Loss of this immunity may contribute to tumor metastasis. However, mechanisms underlying the loss of concomitant immunity are largely unknown. We set up a concomitant tumor immunity model in which this immunity is gradually lost as the primary tumor progresses. We found that CD8(+) T cells, especially tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells, from mice that lost concomitant tumor immunity, possessed potent antitumor properties and strongly expressed effector molecules. Furthermore, effector/memory regulatory T cells (Treg cells, CD103(+)CD4(+)Foxp3(+) T cells) increased as the primary tumor progressed. They initially accumulated around the tumor and in the spleen at later points. Not only did these cells more greatly express killing molecules, they also suppressed the functions of tumor-bearing CD8(+) T cells in vitro and in vivo. Finally, we show that these effector/memory Treg cells inhibit concomitant tumor immunity in vivo. Taken together, data suggest that effector/memory Treg cells are responsible for the loss of concomitant tumor immunity associated with tumor progression.

Abstract
To date, there is no reliable immunohistochemical marker that discriminates between primary pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and cervical SCC metastatic to the lung. In this study, immunohistochemical staining of p16 was performed on 33 primary pulmonary SCCs, 48 primary cervical SCCs, and 17 cases of cervical SCC with pulmonary metastasis. Expression of p16 was noted in 47 cases of cervical SCC (47/48 [98%]), and all were strongly stained. Of the 7 cases of primary pulmonary SCC (7/33 [21%]) in which p16 expression was detected, 3 were weakly positive, 1 was moderately positive, and 3 were strongly positive. Among these p16+ pulmonary SCCs, only 1 showed detectable human papillomavirus DNA. Of the 17 cases of cervical SCC with pulmonary metastasis, all of the pulmonary and cervical tumors were positive for p16. p16 is a useful marker for the discrimination between cervical and pulmonary SCCs. The performance of p16 staining at different cutoff values was also compared.

Abstract
We report an early detection of cancer in a child with Li-Fraumeni syndrome. The proband was a 3-year-old male with a primitive mesenchymal tumor. Genetic analysis showed a germline TP53 mutation in codon 220 exon 6, which changed TAT --> TGT and resulted in a tyrosine-to-cysteine amino acid substitution (Tyr220Cys). The younger sister at risk was followed, and an asymptomatic adrenal cortical carcinoma was detected 3 years later. The report highlights the importance of genetic counseling and provides an example of early detection of cancers in childhood LFS carriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preoperative portal vein embolization is increasingly employed for those with hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis to gain a volume-shifting effect. However, the alterations of histologic architecture and hepatocyte function of future liver remnant (FLR) remain unexplored. METHODS Portal vein ligation (PVL) was performed in cirrhotic and noncirrhotic rats. Regeneration indices that include the DNA synthesis index, restituted liver mass, and the redistributed volume ratio were measured. The indocyanine green 15' retention test (ICG-R15), histologic changes, total Knodell score, and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) were measured before and after PVL. Tc-99m sulfur-colloid liver single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and diisopropyl iminoacetic acid (DISIDA) SPECT were conducted. RESULTS The redistributed volume ratio of cirrhotic rats was less than noncirrhotic rats (63% vs 80%, P < .01). The ICG-R15 of cirrhotic rats at day 7 after PVL was improved compared with baseline (6.0 +/- 4.1% vs 15.8 +/- 4.6%, P < .01). The total Knodell score and activated HSCs of FLR in cirrhotic rats both were decreased compared with those of baseline. The redistributed volume ratio of noncirrhotic and cirrhotic rats based on 99mTc sulfur-colloid SPECT were 79% and 64%, respectively. The clearance T(1/2) of FLR in cirrhotic rats based on DISIDA SPECT was decreased compared with baseline (5.2 +/- 1.9 min vs 8.6 +/- 3.1 min). CONCLUSION The regenerated functional liver mass of cirrhotic rats after PVL is less than noncirrhotic rats, whereas the hepatocyte function of FLR in cirrhotic rats is improved relevant to tissue remodeling.

Abstract
AIM Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-related protein-1 (HCRP1) gene was located at chromosome 8p22, a frequently deleted region in HCC. The gene product was a subunit of mammalian Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport (ESCRT)-I, essential for degradation of epidermal growth factor receptors. In this study, we examined the prognostic role of HCRP1 mRNA expression in HCC. METHODS The expression of HCRP1 mRNA in HCC was assessed in 125 patients receiving surgical resection of HCC. Using the adjacent non-cancerous tissues as a reference, 55 and 70 patients expressing high and low levels of HCRP1 mRNA, respectively, were identified. The predictive value of HCRP1 mRNA expression in postoperative survival was evaluated. RESULTS Expression of HCRP1 mRNA was not associated with any of the baseline clinicopathological parameters. However, univariate analysis showed that it was associated with a better disease-free survival (P < 0.001) and overall survival (P = 0.032). Stepwise Cox multivariate proportional hazards regression analysis showed that the expression of HCRP1 mRNA (hazard ratio [HR], 0.396; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.233-0.674; P = 0.001), tumor number (HR, 1.596; 95% CI, 1.221-2.087; P = 0.001), serum aspartate aminotransferase (HR, 1.002; 95% CI, 1.000-1.003; P = 0.031) and the presence of microvascular invasion (HR, 1.852; 95% CI, 1.131-3.032; P = 0.014) were included as independent predictors for disease-free survival. CONCLUSION Expression of HCRP1 mRNA served as an independent predictor for postoperative disease-free survival in HCC patients.

Abstract
Chronic sclerosing dacryoadenitis and chronic sclerosing sialadenitis have been shown to belong to the group of diseases referred to as IgG4-related sclerosing disease. The authors report a case of the simultaneous occurrence of IgG4-related sclerosing disease in both lacrimal and submandibular glands, clinically simulating malignant lymphoma. A cervical lymph node and a Warthin’s tumor were also involved. This unique case of multiple organ involvement in IgG4-related sclerosing disease is documented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To identify pre-therapeutic predictors of sustained virological response (SVR) in Taiwanese patients with chronic hepatitis C. METHODOLOGY One hundred and ninety-eight consecutive patients receiving interferon plus ribavirin combination therapy were included. Stepwise logistic regression model was performed to estimate the SVR on the presence of various pre-therapeutic clinical parameters. RESULTS The difference of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels (beta = 0.0080, P=0.0151), the presence of genotype 1b (beta = -1.9225, P<0.0001), the presence of dense packing of inflammatory cells in portal tract (beta = 1.5239, P=0.0354), age (beta = -0.0441, P=0.0179) and pre-therapeutic HCV-RNA concentration (beta = -0.0682, P=0.0411) were identified as independent predictors in the regression analysis. Patients with dense packing of inflammatory cells in portal tract (n=21) had significantly higher aspartate aminotransferase concentration, higher histology activity index, higher fibrosis score, and more histologically cirrhosis (P=0.032, 0.0001, 0.034, and 0.020, respectively). Paradoxically, they had a higher chance to achieve SVR (18/21 (85.7%) versus 99/177 (55.9%); P=0.017). CONCLUSIONS Dense packing of inflammatory cells in portal tract is an independent predictor of SVR to antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Abstract
Background/aims: To demonstrate how spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) can better evaluate drusen and associated anatomical changes in eyes with non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) compared with time domain optical coherence tomography (TDOCT). Methods: Images were obtained from three eyes of three patients with AMD using an experimental SDOCT system. Both a titanium–sapphire (Ti:sapphire) laser and a superluminescent diode (SLD) were used as a broadband light source to achieve cross-sectional images of the retina. A qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed for structural changes associated with non-neovascular AMD. An automated algorithm was developed to analyse drusen area and volume from SDOCT images. TDOCT was performed using the fast macular scan (StratusOCT, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, California). Results: SDOCT images can demonstrate structural changes associated with non-neovascular AMD. A new SDOCT algorithm can determine drusen area, drusen volume and proportion of drusen. Conclusions: With new algorithms to determine drusen area and volume and its unprecedented simultaneous ultra-high speed ultra-high resolution imaging, SDOCT can improve the evaluation of structural abnormalities in non-neovascular AMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM To examine associations between lifestyle risk factors and intrahepatic stone (IHS), we conducted a case-control study in Taiwan, which has the highest incidence of IHS in the world. METHODS Study subjects were 151 patients newly diagnosed with IHS at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between January 1999 and December 2001. Two control subjects per case were selected randomly from patients who underwent minor surgery at the same hospital and from family members or neighbors of the hospital staff. Controls were matched to each case by age and gender. Information on lifestyle factors was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Strength of associations was assessed using odds ratios derived from conditional logistic models. RESULTS Female patients were significantly shorter than female controls. Compared to subjects with two or fewer children, odds ratios for those with six or more children were 20.4 in men (95% confidence interval, 1.89-221) and 2.82 (0.97-8.22) in women. Increasing level of education lowered the risk of intrahepatic stone (trend P = 0.004 for men and < 0.0001 for women). Women who had consumed ground-surface water for a long period had a somewhat increased risk (trend P = 0.05). CONCLUSION Lower socioeconomic status and poor hygiene may be involved in the development of intrahepatic stones.

Abstract
Only 2 cases of nasopharyngeal small cell carcinoma have been reported. Another case of this rare type of nasopharyngeal tumor confirmed by immunopositivity for CD56, synaptophysin, and chromogranin A is described in this study. The tumor was also negative for cytokeratin (CK) 20 and thyroid transcription factor-1. Clinical investigation did not find any primary tumor in other anatomic sites. Therefore, this case was established as a primary nasopharyngeal small cell carcinoma. Epstein-Barr virus was shown to be absent by Epstein-Barr virus encoded RNA in situ hybridization study in this case, which further distinguished it from conventional nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Clinical features of this case and 2 previously reported cases are compared. They do not differ from conventional nasopharyngeal carcinoma in clinical presentation, but the prognosis seems to be worse. More cases are needed to confirm the observation and for understanding the clinical behavior of this rare type of nasopharyngeal tumor.

Abstract
Fourteen successful results in 16 cases of microsurgical reconstruction of uni- and bilateral hand amputations are reported. Metacarpal reconstruction included the use of titanium alloy for artificial metacarpi, autogenous metatarsals, and autogenous iliac bone grafts. Uni- and bilateral single and multiple donor toes were used in various combinations. Basic hand function and functional sensibility were restored in 14 of 16 cases. There was minimal donor site functional impairment.

Abstract
We herein report a case of primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix, a very rare disease that is seldom diagnosed before surgical intervention. This case was first suspected for its unique colonoscopic presentation as a cecal submucosal tumor with an overlying mucin-coat at the appendiceal orifice. The diagnosis was later confirmed after the operation. The imaging features of this exceptional disease are presented in detail.

Abstract
Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV) are two recognized species of the Tospovirus genus in the family Bunyaviridae infecting calla lily (Zantedeschia spp.). During 2005, 15 virus isolates were collected from different calla lily plants exhibiting yellow stripes on their leaves in Ho-Li, a major calla lily-production township in Taiwan. After three successive local lesion passages on Chenopodium quinoa Willd., diseased leaf tissues individually infected by these isolates were preserved in liquid nitrogen and used for subsequent identification studies. Using the tospovirus genus-specific primers gL3637 and gL4435c designed from the L RNA, an 800-bp DNA fragment was amplified in reverse transcription-PCR from all 15 isolates. Moreover, leaf extracts of the diseased calla lilies and the C. quinoa plants inoculated with the 15 virus isolates reacted with antisera against the nucleocapsid proteins (NP) of Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV)-gloxinia and Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV), but not to monoclonal antibodies against the NP of TSWV, CCSV, Peanut chlorotic fan-spot virus (PCFV), or Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) in indirect ELISA. These results indicate that the 15 virus isolates are tospoviruses belonging to the WSMoV serogroup. Additionally, we amplified and sequenced the full-length N gene from these tospovirus isolates using primers WN2328 (5'-CCATTGGTTTGCCTCCG-3') and WN3534 (5'-CGTCGACAGAGCAATCGAGGC-3') designed from the S RNA of WSMoV. The deduced amino acid sequences of the N protein from these 15 tospovirus isolates showed a greater than 92% identity to that of CaCV (GenBank Accession No. NC-008301). Furthermore, results of phylogenetic analysis of the 15 isolates on the basis of amino acids sequences, both genetic distance and parsimony trees indicated that they were all genetically clustered within CaCV using INSV, TSWV, and WSMoV as outgroups. The results indicate that the virus causing yellow stripes in calla lilies is a strain of CaCV. Abstract
1alpha,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3)) is known to inhibit the proliferation and invasiveness of prostate cancer cells. However, 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) can cause hypercalcemia and is not suitable as a therapeutic agent. 19-Nor-vitamin D derivatives are known to be less calcemic when administered systemically. In order to develop more potent anti-cancer agents with less calcemic side effect, we therefore utilized (3)H-thymidine incorporation as an index for cell proliferation and examined the antiproliferative activities of nine C-2-substituted 19-nor-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) analogs in the immortalized PZ-HPV-7 normal prostate cell line. Among the nine analogs we observed that the substitution with 2alpha- or 2beta-hydroxypropyl group produced two analogs having antiproliferative potency that is approximately 500- to 1000-fold higher than 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3). The (3)H-thymidine incorporation data were supported by the cell counting data after cells were treated with 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3), 19-nor-2alpha-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) or 19-nor-2beta-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) for 7 days. 19-Nor-2alpha-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) and 19-nor-2beta-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) were also shown to be about 10-fold more active than 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) in cell invasion studies using prostate cancer cells. In conclusion, a substitution at the C-2 position of 19-nor-1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) molecule with a hydroxypropyl group greatly increased the antiproliferative and anti-invasion potencies. Thus, these two analogs could be developed to be effective therapeutic agents for treating early and late stages of prostate cancer.

Abstract
Laboratory and epidemiological studies have indicated that 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) [1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3)] and dietary omega3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are capable of inhibiting prostate cancer at the initiation and progression stages. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) and PUFAs in the form of fish oil applied alone or in combination on cell cycle kinetics in the exponentially growing androgen-dependent and -independent prostate cancer cells. Our data indicate that the high passage androgen-independent cell line, LNCaP-c115 had a much greater inhibitory response at the level of the G(1)/S-phase transition in response to fish oil treatment than androgen-dependent low passage LNCaP-c38 cells. When LNCaP-c38 and LNCaP-c115 cells were treated with fish oil (50mug/ml), 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) (10(-8)M) or fish oil (50mug/ml)+1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) (10(-8)M), a synergistic growth inhibitory effect was observed with 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3)+fish oil group in LNCaP-c115 cell line at the levels of the G(1)/S-phase transition and cell division. This interaction appears to be specific for androgen-independent prostate cancer cell lines. Based on these results, we hypothesize that dietary components, such as omega3PUFAs and Vitamin D, have the potential to delay the progression of prostate cancer cells to an aggressive and un-treatable state.

Abstract
It has been suggested that the major source of vitamin D should come from dietary sources and not sun exposure. However, the major fortified dietary source of vitamin D is milk which often does not contain at least 80% of what is stated on the label. Fish has been touted as an excellent source of vitamin D especially oily fish including salmon and mackerel. Little is known about the effect of various cooking conditions on the vitamin D content in fish. We initiated a study and evaluated the vitamin D content in several species of fish and also evaluated the effect of baking and frying on the vitamin D content. Surprisingly, farmed salmon had approximately 25% of the vitamin D content as wild salmon had. The vitamin D content in fish varied widely even within species. These data suggest that the tables that list the vitamin D content are out-of-date and need to be re-evaluated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We conducted a rat cirrhosis and recovery model, on the basis of which proteomics was used to audit liver resolution from cirrhosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Micronodular cirrhosis was established using Sprague-Dawley rats fed thioacetamide, and spontaneous recovery from cirrhosis was acquired after thioacetamide withdrawal. RESULTS Over the course of a 2-, 3-, and 6-week recovery, macronodular cirrhosis, uneven liver surface, and nearly normal liver surface were acquired, respectively. Specific liver enzymes, hepatitis activity index, hepatocytes apoptosis index, number of activated Kupffer cells and hepatic stellate cells, and area of fibrosis bands consistently peaked at the end of thioacetamide administration and decreased progressively during the recovery period. mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines and proapoptotic molecules peaked around the end of thioacetamide administration and decreased thereafter. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, the seven most upregulated and six most downregulated protein spots were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight. Of these, GST-P2 and its isoforms, GST-alpha and GST-M, were chosen for further validation using immunohistochemistry. Expression of GST-P peaked at the 2-week recovery, whereas GST-alpha and GST-M remained at strong levels at the 6-week recovery. CONCLUSIONS The mechanism of resolution from cirrhosis can be extensively investigated using the presented model which, for example, showed GST isoforms performing their roles at different time phases.

Abstract
EMR2/CD312 is a member of the adhesion-GPCR family that contains extracellular EGF-like domains. Previously it has been shown to interact with chondroitin sulphate glycosaminoglycans in an isoform-specific manner. Although EMR2 expression has been found to be restricted to human myeloid cells, its expression profile has not yet been systemically characterized. In this report, we show that EMR2 receptor expression is up-regulated during differentiation and maturation of macrophages, and is conversely down-regulated during dendritic cell maturation. We also demonstrate that EMR2 receptor alternative splicing and glycosylation is regulated during myeloid differentiation. In monocytes and macrophages, EMR2 can be specifically up-regulated by LPS and IL-10 via an IL-10-mediated pathway. In inflamed tissues, EMR2 is detected in subpopulations of myeloid cells including macrophages and neutrophils. The results presented here further support the idea that EMR2 plays a role in the migration and adhesion of myeloid cells during cell differentiation, maturation, and activation.

Abstract
A fragment of DNA sequence derived from a hepatotropic virus, named NV-F was isolated recently. The aim of this study was to examine whether this virus was associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Total cellular DNA was extracted from hepatocellular carcinoma tissues. NV-F virus DNA was detected by PCR. The PCR products were subjected to sequence analysis. Of the 78 HCC samples included, 12 (15.4%) were positive for NV-F virus DNA. Sequence analysis of the 12 amplified DNA fragments revealed a point mutation in one of them. The clinicopathological parameters between patients with and without NV-F virus infection were compared. It was found that patients with NV-F virus infection were older than those without NV-F virus infection (mean ages, 61.5 versus 52.5 years; P = 0.032). Otherwise, no difference was observed between the two groups. Of the 12 HCC patients positive for NV-F virus DNA, 11 patients were co-infected by either hepatitis B or C virus. The remaining patient was a Taiwanese aboriginal inhabitant with cryptogenic cirrhosis. In conclusion, NV-F virus DNA was identified in 15.4% of HCC tissues. HCC patients with NV-F virus infection were significantly older than those without NV-F virus infection.

Abstract
Frequency-selective bolometers (FSBs) are a new type of detector for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths that are transparent to all but a narrow range of frequencies as set by characteristics of the absorber itself. Therefore stacks of FSBs tuned to different frequencies provide a low-loss compact method for utilizing a large fraction of the light collected by a telescope. Tests of prototype FSBs indicate that the absorption spectra are well predicted by models, that peak absolute absorption efficiencies of the order of 50% are attainable, and that their out-of-band transmission is high.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To address whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection may be involved in the carcinogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract and urinary bladder (SCC-UB). EBV has been implicated in the genesis of a variety of human cancers, including urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder. METHODS Whether EBV infection is related to SCC-UB carcinogenesis was investigated by in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded RNA and immunohistochemistry for latent membrane protein-1 in 26 cases of SCC-UB. RESULTS EBV-encoded RNA and latent membrane protein-1 were identified in the control case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. None of the SCC-UB cases had a nuclear signal of EBV-encoded RNA, and the cancer cells, normal urothelial cells, and inflammatory cells were all negative for latent membrane protein-1, irrespective of the site of SCC-UB. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to explore the role of EBV infection in SCC-UB. Our results suggest that EBV infection is not involved in the carcinogenesis of SCC of the renal pelvis, ureter, and urinary bladder.

Abstract
Extranodal follicular dendritic cell (FDC) tumors are rare. Recognition of the morphological spectrum of FDC tumors is important to clinical diagnosis. Herein is presented a case of pancreatic FDC sarcoma with unusual clinicopathological features. A 64-year-old male patient presented with weight loss, poor appetite, abdominal fullness, mild anemia and mild peripheral eosinophilia. Histologically, the tumor was composed of both epithelioid and spindle cells with abundant intracytoplasmic hyaline globules. These tumor cells were positive for CD21, CD23, CD35, S-100 protein, fascin and clusterin. Both epithelioid and spindle tumor cells independently colonized the liver and formed two tumor nodules 18 months after the initial resection. Notably, the two hepatic metastases additionally acquired patchy expression of human leukocyte antigen-DR. The epithelioid FDC in one of the hepatic lesions transformed into numerous bizarre giant cells, which could easily be confused with a metastatic giant cell carcinoma from the pancreas. FDC tumor should therefore be included in the differential diagnoses when dealing with a giant cell tumor.

Abstract
Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the liver is rare. Totally nine such cases have been reported in the literature. Primary SCC of the liver has been reported to be associated with hepatic teratoma, hepatic cyst, or hepatolithiasis. Complete remission of poorly differentiated SCC of the liver could be achieved by systemic chemotherapy followed by surgery or remarkably respond to hepatic arterial injection of low dose chemotherapeutic drugs. Here we report the first case of primary SCC of the liver presenting as a solid tumor and receiving successful hepatic resection with 9-mo disease free survival.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose a cholangiographic classification for intraductal growth type intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IG-ICC) and its precursor, collectively termed intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile ducts (IPMN-B). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA For the extensive clinicopathologic variations of IPMN-B, a detailed characterization of cholangiography for IPMN-B is beneficial for determining the optimal therapeutic strategy. METHODS A total of 124 patients with cholangiography-available and pathologically proven IPMN-B were retrospectively studied. Numbers of IPMN-B type 1, type 2, type 3, and type 4 were 33, 17, 15, and 59, respectively. A cholangiographic classification was proposed based on the presence of hepatolithiasis, mucobilia, neoplasia localization, and concomitant malignancies. The demographics, histologic grading, management, and survival were also analyzed. RESULTS All 33 IPMN-B type 1 and 12 of 17 IPMN-B type 2 displayed cholangiographic pattern IA demonstrating hepatolithiasis-related biliary stricture. The remaining 5 IPMN-B type 2 displayed cholangiographic pattern IB or IC, which demonstrated mucobilia without discernible neoplasia. Seven of 15 IPMN-B type 3 and 52 of the 59 IPMN-B type 4 displayed cholangiographic pattern IIA or IIB, which demonstrated overt intraductal neoplasia. Seven IPMN-B type 3 or 4 displayed cholangiographic pattern IIIA or IIIB, which demonstrated IPMN-B and concomitant malignancies. For those presenting with cholangiographic pattern IA, IC, IIA, IIB, and IIIA, straightforward hepatectomies for the diseased lobes were performed. For those with pattern IB, surgical resections were performed only when there was emergence of mucin-producing neoplasia. For those with IIIB, the concomitant malignancies were considered inoperable. No disease-related death occurred in IPMN-B type 1and 2. The mean survival rates of IPMN-B type 3 and type 4 were 55.5 +/- 17.1 months and 36.9 +/- 6.3 months, respectively. CONCLUSION The presented cholangiographic classification facilitates the management for IPMN-B. Significant survival discrepancy at the various stages warrants a more aggressive surgical strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Altered actin isoform expression occurs in some pathological conditions including muscular malignancies. This study was to investigate whether a similar event occurs in hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS Cellular RNA was extracted from cancerous and non-cancerous hepatoma tissues. Reverse transcription (RT)-PCR followed by cloning and sequencing was performed to obtain populations of actin sequences. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out to identify novel actin isoforms. Interaction between the novel actin isoform and other cellular proteins was examined by the yeast two-hybrid system. The relative amounts of the novel actin isoform in the cancerous and non-cancerous tissues were further assayed using real-time PCR with specific primers. RESULTS When compared between the cancerous and non-cancerous tissues, the proportion of non-beta-actins in the cancerous parts increased significantly in three of four cases included. Among the non-beta-actins, a novel group of isoforms was identified, temporarily named kappa-actins. Two genetically closely related sequences, FKSG30 and an actin-like sequence in the Cat Eye syndrome region, were found to cluster with the kappa-actins. Protein interaction assay indicated that the interaction between kappa-actin and prefoldin 2 was greatly diminished. The relative amounts of kappa-actin increased in 12 of 20 cancerous tissues assayed. CONCLUSIONS A novel class of actin isoforms was expressed in some hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, replacing beta-actins to become the major constituents of actin cytoskeleton.

Abstract
This study compared changes in indirect markers of muscle damage following eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors among the exercises consisting of different number of eccentric actions. Sixty male athletes were placed into one of the six groups (n=10 per group) based on the number of eccentric actions for the first (ECC1) and second exercise bouts (ECC2). Single bout groups (30, 50, and 70) performed ECC1 only, and repeated bout groups (30-30, 50-50, and 70-70) performed ECC2 3 days after ECC1. Another 10 male athletes performed different number of eccentric actions for ECC1 (30) and ECC2 (70) separated by 3 days (30-70). Changes in maximal isometric strength (MVC), range of motion (ROM), upper arm circumference (CIR), serum creatine kinase activity, myoglobin, and nitric oxide concentrations and muscle soreness for 10 days following ECC1 were compared among groups by two-way repeated measures ANOVA. Changes in MVC, ROM, and CIR following ECC1 were significantly (P<0.05) smaller for the groups that performed 30 eccentric actions compared with other groups. No significant differences between 30 and 30-30, 50 and 50-50, and 70 and 70-70 were evident for the changes in the measures for 10 days following ECC1 except for the acute decreases in MVC and ROM immediately after ECC2 for the repeated bout groups. The 30-30 and 30-70 groups showed similar changes in all criterion measures. It is concluded that recovery from eccentric exercise is not retarded by the second bout of eccentric exercise regardless of the number of eccentric actions.

Abstract
Our ability to harness tolerance mechanisms will have a major impact in organ transplantation. It should enable drug minimization, and eventually, the elimination of all immunosuppressive drugs. An improved understanding of the biology of regulatory T cells will make it possible to replace current induction regimens with those favouring the selective vaccination of T cells that prevent graft rejection. Once regulation is established, the continued supply of graft antigens should empower T cell regulation to become the dominant natural mechanism to prevent graft rejection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Two types of neoplastic lesions preceding invasive intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are identified: a flat-type neoplastic lesion called 'biliary intraepithelial neoplasia (BilIN)' and an intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPN-B). Multi-step carcinogenesis has been suggested in both lesions, although phenotypic changes during this process remain unclarified. METHODS We immunohistochemically examined expression patterns of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, cytokeratin 7 (CK7), and CK20 in BilIN, IPN-B, and ICC in 110 cases of hepatolithiasis. RESULTS Thirty-seven cases of ICC in hepatolithiasis were divided into 18 tubular adenocarcinomas with BilIN, 10 tubular adenocarcinomas with IPN-B and nine colloid carcinomas with IPN-B. Carcinogenesis via BilIN was characterized by MUC2-/CK7+/CK20-with increasing MUC1 expression. IPN-B was characterized by the intestinal phenotype (MUC2+/CK20+), and carcinogenesis leading to tubular adenocarcinoma was associated with increasing MUC1 expression and that to colloid carcinoma with MUC1-negativity. Pathological stages of tubular adenocarcinoma of ICC with BilIN or IPN-B were more advanced than those of colloid carcinoma with IPN-B. CONCLUSIONS Immunophenotypes of MUCs and cytokeratins might characterize three cholangiocarcinogenetic pathways in hepatolithiasis. Increased expression of MUC1 in BilIN and also IPN-B is associated with tubular adenocarcinoma, while colloid carcinoma in IPN-B is characterized by MUC1-negativity and less advanced pathologic stages.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Pancreatic cystic neoplasms and ductal adenocarcinoma manifest diverse clinical features and prognoses, which might be related to cellular distribution of ezrin modulated through various trophic molecules. DESIGN Laboratory investigation and retrospective analysis. SETTING Medical school-affiliated university hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with solid pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) (n = 12), mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) (n = 18), intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (IPMT) (n = 18), and ductal adenocarcinoma (PA) (n = 73) of the pancreas were studied. Expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor (EGFR) and ezrin were determined using immunohistochemistry. Epidermal growth factor receptor and ezrin expression in sodium butyrate (SB)-treated PA cell line PANC-1 was determined using immunocytochemistry. Messenger RNA expression of ezrin in the PANC-1 cell line treated with SB was determined using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Multivariate analysis of survival of patients with PA was performed. RESULTS None of 12 SPTs displayed synchronous expression of EGF and EGFR, while all 3 malignant SPTs displayed membranous ezrin expression. One of 18 MCNs displayed synchronous expression of EGF and EGFR, while 4 of 6 borderline malignant and 8 of 8 malignant MCNs displayed membranous ezrin expression. Two of 4 borderline malignant and 11 of 11 malignant IPMTs displayed synchronous expression of EGF and EGFR, and all borderline malignant and malignant IPMTs displayed membranous ezrin expression. Less differentiated PA displayed EGF, EGFR, and membranous ezrin expression more frequently compared with more differentiated PA. Epidermal growth factor receptor expression of PANC-1 cells decreased in an SB dose dependent manner, in which PANC-1 cells became more differentiated and membranous ezrin expression of PANC-1 cells decreased correspondingly. Messenger RNA expression of ezrin in PANC-1 cells also decreased in an SB dose dependent manner. Patients with PA with membranous ezrin expression had a poorer prognosis compared with those without (P = .02). CONCLUSIONS Membranous translocation of ezrin might play a role during malignant transformation of SPT, MCN, IPMT, and PA, which are either dependent on (IPMT and PA) or independent of (SPT and MCN) the EGF-EGFR pathway. Membranous ezrin expression represents a prognostic factor for PA.

Abstract
We present ultra-high resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) structural intensity and optical Doppler tomography (ODT) flow velocity images of the human retina in vivo. The ultra-high speed OCT system is based on Spectral Domain or Fourier Domain technology, which provides a sensitivity advantage over conventional OCT of more than 2 orders of magnitude. This sensitivity improvement allows video rate OCT and ODT cross sectional imaging of retinal structures. Images will be presented with axial resolutions of 6 and 3.5 microns. We observed small features in the inner and outer plexiform layers, which are believed to be small blood vessels. Flow velocity images will be presented showing pulsatile flow in retinal arteries and veins.

Abstract
Thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer and changes in retinal nerve fiber layer birefringence may both precede clinically detectable glaucomatous vision loss. We present in vivo thickness and depth-resolved birefringence measurements of the human retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) by use of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). Using a fiber-based PS-OCT setup real-time images of the human retina in vivo were recorded, co-registered with retinal video images of the location of PS-OCT scans. PS-OCT scans around the optic nerve head (ONH) of two healthy young volunteers were made using 10 concentric circles of increasing radius. Both the mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and mean retinal nerve fiber birefringence for each of 48 sectors on a circle were determined. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and birefringence varied as a function of sector around the ONH. Measured double pass phase retardation per unit depth values around the ONH range between 0.10 and 0.35 degrees/microm. The retinal nerve fiber layer becomes thinner with increasing distance from the ONH. In contrast, the birefringence does not vary significantly with increasing distance from the ONH.

Abstract
A cohort of patients with intraductal growth-type intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IG-ICC) and its precursor lesions, collectively termed intraductal papillary neoplasm of the liver (IPNL), was characterized with respect to demographics, clinical manifestations, perioperative management, long-term survival, and molecular features associated with carcinogenesis. A total of 122 patients with IPNL types 1 through 4, 108 patients with non-IG-ICC and 210 patients with hepatolithiasis alone were studied. Expression of CDX2, TFF1, MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, EGFR, and p53 was determined by using immunohistochemistry. Females predominated in those with hepatolithiasis alone and IPNL. The mean age of patients with hepatolithiasis alone was 6 to 8 years younger than that of those with IPNL. The association with hepatolithiasis in patients with IPNL types 1 and 2, IPNL types 3 and 4, and non-IG-ICC was 100%, 79%, and 64%, respectively. Mucobilia, anemia, and elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels were helpful in distinguishing IG-ICC and its precursor lesions. The mean survival of patients with IPNL type 3, IPNL type 4, and non-IG-ICC was 55.5 months, 36.9 months, and 15.8 months, respectively. The incidence of expression of CDX2 and TFF1 was maximal in IPNL type 3. Expression and cellular distribution of MUC2 and CDX2 were similar. MUC5AC was strongly expressed in all patients with IPNL; EGFR and p53 were rarely expressed in patients with IPNL. In conclusion, hepatolithiasis appears to be a precipitating factor in the development of IPNL. Signs of mucobilia were specific for the diagnosis of IPNL. Expression of CDX2 and MUC2 are helpful in differentiating IPNL and non-IG-ICC. Significant differences in survival associated with the various lesions studied warrants a more aggressive surgical strategy in their management.

Abstract
A new tospovirus, Calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV), was isolated from calla lilies (Zantedeschia spp.) in Taiwan. Chlorotic spots, ranging from light green to yellow, appear on the middle leaves of the affected plants. Virions measuring 75 to 105 nm, similar in size to tospovirus particles, were present in crude extracts and ultrathin sections of diseased leaves. Of 35 plant species inoculated mechanically, 24, including wax gourd (Benincasa hispida) and zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo), were susceptible to the virus. CCSV was transmitted from infected wax gourd by Thrips palmi to healthy wax gourd and zucchini squash. The virus was weakly related to Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot tests. WSMoV-specific N gene primers, however, failed to produce DNA fragments from total RNA extracts of CCSV-infected plants in reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results of RT-PCR show that the conserved regions of the L genes of tospoviruses are present in CCSV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The authors investigated differential expression of cdx2 in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas (IPMN) and ductal adenocarcinoma. METHODS Patients with IPMN (n = 23) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (n = 30) were studied. Expression of cdx2 mRNA, CDX2 protein, muc2 mRNA, MUC2 apomucin, and MUC5AC apomucin were determined. RESULTS Of 23 IPMN, expression of cdx2 was detected in 8 of 9 adenomas, 6 of 8 borderline malignancies, and 3 of 6 malignancies, respectively. Of the 3 cdx2-expressing malignant IPMN, 2 did not display CDX2 expression. The appearance of CDX2-positive neoplastic cells in IPMN coincided with that of MUC2-positive neoplastic cells. All 23 IPMN displayed a positive MUC5AC expression irrespective to the status of CDX2 expression. Of 30 ductal adenocarcinomas, none displayed cdx2, CDX2, and MUC2 expression, while 10 cases displayed positive MUC5AC expression. CONCLUSION Aberrant expression of cdx2 homeobox gene was detected in IPMN but not in ductal adenocarcinoma, which might determine their diverse carcinogenesis.
