Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the normal histological localization of aquaporin (AQP) 5 protein in the lacrimal and nictitating membrane glands and to compare this localization in healthy and keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) dogs. Lacrimal and nictitating membrane glands of 5 healthy Beagles and nictitating membrane glands of 5 KCS dogs (3 Beagles and 2 mongrel dogs: 0-13 years) were used for the present study. The owners of the KCS dogs did not consent to perform biopsies of the lacrimal glands. The localization and distribution of AQP5 protein were investigated by an immunohistochemical technique. In immunohistochemical staining, AQP5 was localized in the apical site of acinar epithelial and ductal epithelial cells from both the lacrimal and nictitating membrane glands in healthy dogs. However, AQP5 was not detected in the 5 KCS dogs. These results for immunohistochemical AQP5 localization might correlate with the deficiency in tear secretion found in KCS dogs.

Abstract
The expression of colour marks (parr marks, red and black spots) of the amago salmon Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae was compared with microsatellite information, to see the effects of stocking hatchery fish on the phenotype of indigenous populations, which face extinction through extensive stocking. A Bayesian-based assignment test suggested introgression of two exotic clusters into one indigenous cluster in the stocked area and its vicinity. The number of parr marks was significantly higher in one hatchery-origin population, which exclusively comprised one exotic cluster. An increased number of red spots in stocked hatchery fish was probably a consequence of hatchery feeding conditions. The number of black spots was correlated with body size in many populations, except for hatchery and heavily introgressed populations. Coefficients of correlation and regression of black spots with body size, which were largest in indigenous populations, decreased with an increase of introgression by hatchery fish. As indigenous populations have low genetic diversity with high relatedness, it was inferred that the height of correlation and regression coefficients in black spots is caused by high genetic homogeneity and fixation of alleles in loci related to the increase of black spots, both of which might have collapsed with introgression by hatchery fish. These results suggest the possibility that introgression by stocked fish causes a change of phenotype in indigenous populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Mediastinal emphysema sometimes develops following esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) without perforation because the esophagus has no serosa. Carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation during esophageal ESD may reduce the incidence of mediastinal emphysema. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence and severity of post-ESD mediastinal emphysema in patients receiving CO2 insufflation vs. standard air insufflation during esophageal ESD. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 27 patients who had undergone esophageal ESD with insufflation of CO2 between July 2009 and March 2010 were enrolled in this study (CO2 group). Another 105 patients who had undergone esophageal ESD with air insufflation between March 2004 and May 2009 were included as historical controls (air group). Multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) was carried out immediately after ESD. A conventional chest radiograph was taken the next day. Mediastinal emphysema findings on MDCT and radiography were compared between the groups. RESULTS Mediastinal emphysema detected by chest radiography was 0 % in the CO2 group vs. 6.6 % in the air group (n.s.). Mediastinal emphysema on MDCT was significantly less frequent in the CO2 group compared with the air group (30 % vs. 63 %; P = 0.002). The severity of mediastinal emphysema also tended to be lower in the CO2 group. CONCLUSIONS Whereas mediastinal emphysema detected by radiography is not so common, MDCT immediately after ESD revealed a certain prevalence of post-ESD mediastinal emphysema. Insufflation of CO2 rather than air during esophageal ESD significantly reduced postprocedural mediastinal emphysema. CO2 can be considered as insufflating gas for esophageal ESD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the proton-density (PD)-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) and fast-recovery FSE (FRFSE) sequences for the evaluation of the anatomical structures of the knee. METHOD 24 healthy volunteers who underwent MRI by both sagittal PD-weighted FSE and FRFSE sequences were evaluated. The signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and anatomical detail visualisation were compared for the two techniques. RESULTS The mean CNRs and reader ratings for both readers were significantly higher for the PD-weighted FRFSE images than for the PD-weighted FSE images in the cartilages/the femorotibial joint effusion and the cruciate ligaments/the effusion around the cruciate ligaments; however, the mean CNRs and reader ratings for both readers were significantly higher for the PD-weighted FSE sequences than for the PD-weighted FRFSE sequences in the cartilages/the menisci and the cruciate ligaments. CONCLUSIONS The main advantages of the PD-weighted FRFSE sequence are the increase in contrast between fluid and non-fluid tissues and the time saved by using the procedure. However, in the absence of joint effusion, the PD-weighted FRFSE sequence generates a poorer contrast between the cartilage and meniscus, the cruciate ligaments and fat of the intercondylar fossa.

Abstract
Disturbance of blood supply to the femoral head is a risk factor for corticosteroid-associated osteonecrosis. The aim was to measure blood supply of the proximal femur during corticosteroid therapy in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. We repeatedly performed 78 dynamic MRIs of 19 hip joints in 19 SLE patients after initiation of corticosteroid administration for one year. Blood supply of the femoral head (epiphysis, growth plate, and metaphysis), the femoral neck, and the medial circumflex femoral artery were measured in terms of peak percent enhancement. At the first month, blood supply of the growth plate was significantly higher in the pediatric group (<15 years old) than in the adolescent and adult group (>15 years old). At the fourth month, blood supply in every part of the femoral head (epiphysis, growth plate, and metaphysis) was significantly higher in the pediatric group than in the adolescent and adult group. Multiple regression analysis revealed that blood supply to the femoral head depended on the number of days after initiation of corticosteroid administration and the age at the time of dynamic MRI. Blood supply to the femoral head is abundant in pediatric patients and is a function of the number of days after initiation of corticosteroid administration.

Abstract
A new pleosporalean family Tetraplosphaeriaceae is established to
accommodate five new genera; 1) Tetraplosphaeria with small ascomata
and anamorphs belonging to Tetraploa s. str., 2)
Triplosphaeria characterised by hemispherical ascomata with rim-like
side walls and anamorphs similar to Tetraploa but with three conidial
setose appendages, 3) Polyplosphaeria with large ascomata surrounded
by brown hyphae and anamorphs producing globose conidia with several setose
appendages, 4) Pseudotetraploa, an anamorphic genus, having
obpyriform conidia with pseudosepta and four to eight setose appendages, and
5) Quadricrura, an anamorphic genus, having globose conidia with one
or two long setose appendages at the apex and four to five short setose
appendages at the base. Fifteen new taxa in these genera mostly collected from
bamboo are described and illustrated. They are linked by their Tetraploa
s. l. anamorphs. To infer phylogenetic placement in the
Pleosporales, analyses based on a combined dataset of small- and
large-subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA (SSU+LSU nrDNA) was carried out.
Tetraplosphaeriaceae, however, is basal to the main pleosporalean
clade and therefore its relationship with other existing families was not
completely resolved. To evaluate the validity of each taxon and to clarify the
phylogenetic relationships within this family, further analyses using
sequences from ITS-5.8S nrDNA (ITS), transcription elongation factor 1-α
(TEF), and β-tubulin (BT), were also conducted. Monophyly of the family
and that of each genus were strongly supported by analyses based on a combined
dataset of the three regions (ITS+TEF+BT). Our results also suggest that
Tetraplosphaeria (anamorph: Tetraploa s. str.) is an
ancestral lineage within this family. Taxonomic placement of the bambusicolous
fungi in Astrosphaeriella, Kalmusia, Katumotoa, Massarina,
Ophiosphaerella, Phaeosphaeria, Roussoella, Roussoellopsis, and
Versicolorisporium, are also discussed based on the SSU+LSU
phylogeny.

Abstract
We present a comprehensive phylogeny derived from 5 genes, nucSSU, nucLSU rDNA, TEF1, RPB1 and RPB2, for 356 isolates and 41 families (six newly described in this volume) in Dothideomycetes. All currently accepted orders in the class are represented for the first time in addition to numerous previously unplaced lineages. Subclass Pleosporomycetidae is expanded to include the aquatic order Jahnulales. An ancestral reconstruction of basic nutritional modes supports numerous transitions from saprobic life histories to plant associated and lichenised modes and a transition from terrestrial to aquatic habitats are confirmed. Finally, a genomic comparison of 6 dothideomycete genomes with other fungi finds a high level of unique protein associated with the class, supporting its delineation as a separate taxon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a pediatric setting, the need for lifetime oral anticoagulation is increasing because of currency of extracardiac total cavo-pulmonary connection (TCPC) and pediatric valve surgery. We evaluated a new compact device "CoaguChek XS" for measuring prothrombin time-internatinal normalized ratio (PT-INR). METHODS The international normalized ratio (INR) values obtained from 71 patients (223 samples) by a CoaguChek XS were compared with those obtained by a laboratory-based coagulation analyzer. RESULTS The values from the CoaguChek XS had a significant correlation with the laboratory based results. (r2 = 0.92, p < 0.01, regression line y = 1.05 x -0.02). CONCLUSION The CoaguChek XS will be useful in pediatric management.

Abstract
A male baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section due to fetal distress at 30 weeks of gestational age with a birth weight of 813 g. By fetal echocardiography, the patient had been diagnosed with transposition of great arteries (type 1). Early two-staged arterial switch operation was planned after 34 gestational age avoiding intracranial hemorrhage under cardiopulmonary bypass. At 19 days of life, vegetation was revealed on the pulmonary valve by echocardiography, so he was diagnosed as infectious endocarditis. Cefotaxime and gamma-globulin were given intravenously for 4 weeks. While waiting for the increase in the body weight, desaturation from chronic respiratory distress syndrome was exacerbated. At 8 months old, urgent Senning operation was performed to improve desaturation. The patient was discharged at 20 post operative day. We conclude that Senning operation can be feasible operation in such a complicated case.

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are at high risk of developing osteonecrosis. This study utilized MRI to document the long-term natural history of asymptomatic osteonecrosis associated with corticosteroid therapy in SLE patients. Two hundred and one SLE patients treated with high-dose corticosteroids were prospectively observed from 1986 to 1997. The inclusion criterion was that patients had received periodic MRI examinations of all their hip and knee joints for ≥10 years. Joints that were already collapsed and symptomatic at the first examination were excluded. Five hundred and thirty-seven joints (251 hips and 286 knees) were identified in 144 patients, with a mean follow-up period of 13.6 years (range, 10—20 years) and a follow-up rate of 73%. Mean age of SLE onset was 26 years, and the mean highest oral corticosteroid dosage was 57 mg/day. Osteonecrosis developed in 238 (44%) of 537 joints. At final follow-up, 117 (49%) of these 238 joints demonstrated spontaneous repair in the necrotic area. Osteonecrosis completely disappeared in 21 joints. Enlargement of osteonecrosis was noted in 35 joints (15%) following increased steroid dosage because of SLE recurrence. Finally, 52 joints (22%) were collapsed. Spontaneous repair of asymptomatic osteonecrosis was observed, whereas enlargement occurred only after corticosteroid dosage increases. Lupus (2010) 19, 1307—1314.

Abstract
Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) diversifies immunoglobulin through somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class-switch recombination (CSR). AID-transgenic mice develop T-lymphoma, indicating that constitutive expression of AID leads to tumorigenesis. Here, we transplanted mouse bone marrow cells transduced with AID. Twenty-four of the 32 recipient mice developed T-lymphoma 2-4 months after the transplantation. Surprisingly, unlike AID-transgenic mice, seven recipients developed B-leukemia/lymphoma with longer latencies. None of the mice suffered from myeloid leukemia. When we used nude mice as recipients, they developed only B-leukemia/lymphoma, presumably due to lack of thymus. Analysis of AID mutants suggested that an intact form with SHM activity is required for maximum ability of AID to induce lymphoma. Except for a K-ras active mutant in one case, specific mutations could not be identified in T-lymphoma; however, Notch1 was constitutively activated in most cases. Importantly, truncations of Ebf1 or Pax5 were observed in B-leukemia/lymphoma. In conclusion, this is the first report on the potential of AID overexpression to promote B-cell lymphomagenesis in a mouse model. Aberrant expression of AID in bone marrow cells induced leukemia/lymphoma in a cell-lineage-dependent manner, mainly through its function as a mutator.
