Abstract
This study tests the hypothesis that combined melatonin and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ADMSC, 1.2 × 10(6) given intravenously) treatment offer superior protection against cyclophosphamide (CYP 150 mg/kg)-induced acute interstitial cystitis (AIC) in rats. Male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were treated as follows: sham controls, AIC alone, AIC + melatonin, AIC + ADMSC, and AIC + melatonin +ADMSC. When melatonin was used, it was given as follows: 20 mg/kg at 30 min after CYP and 50 mg/kg at 6 and 18 hr after CYP. Twenty-four-hour urine volume, urine albumin level, and severity of hematuria were highest in AIC rats and lowest in the controls; likewise urine volume was higher in AIC + melatonin rats than in AIC + ADMSC and AIC + melatonin + ADMSC treated rats; in all cases, P < 0.001. The numbers of CD14+, CD74+, CD68+, MIP+, Cox-2+, substance P+, cells and protein expression of IL-6, IL-12, RANTES, TNF-α, NF-κB, MMP-9, iNOS (i.e. inflammatory biomarkers), glycosaminoglycan level, expression of oxidized protein, and protein expression of reactive oxygen species (NOX-1, NOX-2, NOX-4) in the bladder tissue exhibited an identical pattern compared with that of hematuria among the five groups (all P < 0.0001). The integrity of epithelial layer and area of collagen deposition displayed an opposite pattern compared to that of hematuria among all groups (P < 0.0001). The cellular expressions of antioxidants (GR, GPx, HO-1, NQO 1) showed a significant progressive increase form controls to AIC + melatonin + ADMSC (all P < 0.0001). Combined regimen of melatonin and ADMSC was superior to either alone in protecting against CYP-induced AIC.

Abstract
Intriguing functionalities at nano-sized domain walls have recently spawned a new paradigm for developing novel nanoelectronics due to versatile characteristics. In this study, we explore a new scenario to modulate the local conduction of ferroic domain walls. Three controlling parameters, i.e., external electrical field, magnetic field and light, are introduced to the 90° domain walls (90° DWs) of BiFeO₃. Electrical modulation is realized by electrical transport, where the mobility of 90° DWs can be altered by gating voltage. We further use the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic coupling to reveal the inherent magnetism at the DWs. With an established magnetic nature, magnetotransport has been conducted to introduce magnetic controlling parameter, where a giant positive magnetoresistance change can be observed up to 200%. In addition, light modulated conduction, a core factor for multifunctional applications, is successfully demonstrated (current enhancement by a factor of 2 with 11 W white lamp). These results offer new insights to discover the tunability of domain wall nanoelectronics.

Abstract
This study tested whether combined therapy with melatonin and apoptotic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (A-ADMSCs) offered additional benefit in ameliorating sepsis-induced acute kidney injury. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 65) were randomized equally into five groups: Sham controls (SC), sepsis induced by cecal-ligation and puncture (CLP), CLP-melatonin, CLP-A-ADMSC, and CLP-melatonin-A-ADMSC. Circulating TNF-α level at post-CLP 6 hr was highest in CLP and lowest in SC groups, higher in CLP-melatonin than in CLP-A-ADMSC and CLP-melatonin-A-ADMSC groups (all P < 0.001). Immune reactivity as reflected in the number of splenic helper-, cytoxic-, and regulatory-T cells at post-CLP 72 hr exhibited the same pattern as that of circulating TNF-α among all groups (P < 0.001). The histological scoring of kidney injury and the number of F4/80+ and CD14+ cells in kidney were highest in CLP and lowest in SC groups, higher in CLP-melatonin than in CLP-A-ADMSC and CLP-melatonin-A-ADMSC groups, and higher in CLP-A-ADMSC than in CLP-melatonin-A-ADMSC groups (all P < 0.001). Changes in protein expressions of inflammatory (RANTES, TNF-1α, NF-κB, MMP-9, MIP-1, IL-1β), apoptotic (cleaved caspase 3 and PARP, mitochondrial Bax), fibrotic (Smad3, TGF-β) markers, reactive-oxygen-species (NOX-1, NOX-2), and oxidative stress displayed a pattern identical to that of kidney injury score among the five groups (all P < 0.001). Expressions of antioxidants (GR+, GPx+, HO-1, NQO-1+) were lowest in SC group and highest in CLP-melatonin-A-ADMSC group, lower in CLP than in CLP-melatonin and CLP-A-ADMSC groups, and lower in CLP-melatonin- than in CLP-A-ADMSC-tretaed animals (all P < 0.001). In conclusion, combined treatment with melatonin and A-ADMSC was superior to A-ADMSC alone in protecting the kidneys from sepsis-induced injury.

Abstract
Our objective was to examine the genetic diversity of central and peripheral populations of Toona ciliata var. pubescens, to elucidate whether the central-peripheral hypothesis applies to these populations. We analyzed 392 individuals from nine natural populations using eight pairs of polymorphic SSR primers. The results showed that the mean numbers of observed and expected alleles in peripheral populations were higher than in central populations. Common widespread and rare local (RL) alleles were observed in all populations. However, common local alleles were found in five populations and rare widespread alleles were only found in three. The total numbers of the four types of alleles were higher in peripheral than in central populations, and the quantity of the RL allele was obviously higher in the peripheral populations than in the central populations. Both the observed and expected heterozygosities were higher in peripheral populations compared with the central populations. The coefficient of gene differentiation of the peripheral populations was 0.3045, which was significantly higher than that of the central populations. The gene flow between central populations was greater than one, but less than one between peripheral populations. This indicates that frequent gene flow exists between central populations, while terrain and habitat fragmentation prevent gene flow between peripheral populations. A Mantel test indicated that there was no relationship between genetic and geographical distance of T. ciliata var. pubescens.

Abstract
Xp11.2 translocation renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rare and predominantly found in children and young adults. Because of the property of overexpressed transcription factor E3 (TFE3) fusion protein, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining with TFE3 antibody makes an excellent diagnostic tool. This study analyzed preliminary experiences of eight Xp11.2 translocation RCCs in our institution between 2007 and 2012. In four males and four females with a mean age of 28.4 years. Xp11.2 translocation RCCs were diagnosed. TFE3 IHC stain was positive in all tumor specimens. As the initial presentation, four patients suffered from abdominal pain, three cases had gross hematuria, and one case had hemoptysis caused by existing lung metastasis. The tumor was located in the right kidney (75%) with mean diameter of 5.85 ± 2.64 cm. Three cases (38%, 3/8) presented with lymph node metastasis at the time of diagnosis. In five cases (63%, 5/8), the initial diagnosis was Stage III and IV. Treatment included open surgery (one partial nephrectomy and five radical nephrectomies), cryoablation, immunotherapy, and target therapy. The mean follow-up time was 32 months. One patient died after 23.4 months of follow-up. The application of TFE3 IHC stain will improve the diagnostic accuracy for detecting XP11.2 translocation renal cell carcinoma. Surgery or cryoablation both had excellent prognosis in early stages. Although the disease is believed to be indolent, an increasingly aggressive clinical course should be kept in mind, especially for children and young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study tested the hypothesis that exendin-4 and sitagliptin can effectively protect kidney from acute ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. METHODS Adult SD-rats (n = 48) equally divided into group 1 (sham control), group 2 (IR injury), group 3 [IR + sitagliptin 600 mg/kg at post-IR 1, 24, 48 hr)], and group 4 [IR + exendin-4 10 μm/kg at 1 hr after procedure] were sacrificed after 24 and 72 hrs (n = 6 at each time from each group) following clamping of bilateral renal pedicles for 60 minutes (groups 2-4). RESULTS Serum creatinine level and urine protein to creatinine ratio were highest in group 2 and lowest in group 1 (all p < 0.001) without notable differences between groups 3 and 4. Kidney injury score, expressions of inflammatory biomarkers at mRNA (MMP-9, TNF-α, IL-1β, PAI-1), protein (TNF-α, NF-κB and VCAM-1), and cellular (CD68+) levels in injured kidneys at 24 and 72 hr showed an identical pattern compared to that of creatinine level in all groups (all p < 0.0001). Expressions of oxidized protein, reactive oxygen species (NOX-1, NOX-2), apoptosis (Bax, caspase-3 and PARP), and DNA damage marker (γH2AX+) of IR kidney at 24 and 72 hrs exhibited a pattern similar to that of inflammatory mediators among all groups (all p < 0.01). Renal expression of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, and anti-oxidant biomarkers at cellular (GPx, GR) and protein (NQO-1, HO-1, GPx) levels at 24 and 72 hr were lowest in group 1, significantly lower in group 2 than in groups 3 and 4 (all p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Exendin-4 and sitagliptin provided significant protection for the kidneys against acute IR injury.

Abstract
Background Testosterone provokes Sertoli cell maturation and represses AMH production. In adult patients with Sertoli-cells-only syndrome (SCOS) and androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS), high level of AMH expression is detected in Sertoli cells due to defect of androgen/AR signaling. Objective We postulated that up-regulation of SOX9 due to impairment of androgen/AR signaling in Sertoli cells might explain why high level of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) expression occur in these testiculopathic patients. Methods Biological research of testicular specimens from men with azoospermia or mouse. The serum hormone levels were studied in 23 men with obstructive azoospermia, 33 men with SCOS azoospermia and 21 volunteers with normal seminograms during a period of 4 years. Immunohistochemical staining and reverse-transcription PCR were used to examine the relationships among AR, SOX9 and AMH expression in adult human and mouse testes. The ability of AR to repress the expression of SOX9 and AMH was evaluated in vitro in TM4 Sertoli cells and C3H10T1/2 cells. Results SCOS specimens showed up-regulation of SOX9 and AMH proteins but down-regulation of AR proteins in Sertoli cells. The mRNA levels of AR were significantly lower and the SOX9, AMH mRNA levels higher in all SCOS patients compared to controls (P< 0.05). The testosterone levels in the SCOS patients were within the normal range, but most were below the median of the controls. Furthermore, our invitro cell line experiments demonstrated that androgen/AR signaling suppressed the gene and protein levels of AMH via repression of SOX9. Conclusions Our data show that the functional androgen/AR signaling to repress SOX9 and AMH expression is essential for Sertoli cell maturation. Impairment of androgen/AR signaling promotes SOX9-mediated AMH production, accounts for impairments of Sertoli cells in SCOS azoospermic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To propose an original method of benchmarking regions based on their prevalence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and to identify regions with unusual results. DESIGN To study between-region variability with a three-level hierarchical logistic regression model and a Bayesian non-parametric method. SETTING French 2006 national HAIs point prevalence survey. PARTICIPANTS A total of 336 858 patients from 2289 healthcare facilities in 27 regions. Patients with an imported HAI (1% of the data, 20.7% of infected patients), facilities with <5 patients and patients who had at least one missing value for the variables taken into account were excluded (5.0% of patients). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Binary outcome variable indicates whether a given patient was infected. RESULTS Two clusters of regions were identified: one cluster of five regions had a lower adjusted prevalence than the other one of 22 regions, while no region with unusually high prevalence could be identified. Nevertheless, the degree of heterogeneity of odds ratios between facilities for facility-specific effects of use of invasive devices was more important in some regions than in others. CONCLUSIONS The adjusted regional prevalence of HAIs can serve as an adequate benchmark to identify regions with concerning results. Although no outlier regions were identified, the proposed approach could be applied to the data of the 2012 national survey to benchmark regional healthcare policies. The estimation of facility-specific effects of use of invasive devices may orient future regional action plans.

Abstract
Background In a previous study, we showed that the cephalochordate amphioxus Branchiostoma floridae has localized maternal transcripts of conserved germ cell markers Vasa and Nanos in its early embryos. These results provided strong evidence to support a preformation mechanism for primordial germ cell (PGC) development in B. floridae. Results In this study, we further characterize the expression of B. floridae homologs of Piwi and Tudor, which play important roles in germline development in diverse metazoan animals. We show that maternal mRNA of one of the identified Piwi-like homologs, Bf-Piwil1, also colocalizes with Vasa in the vegetal germ plasm and has zygotic expression in both the putative PGCs and the tail bud, suggesting it may function in both germline and somatic stem cells. More interestingly, one Tudor family gene, Bf-Tdrd7, is only expressed maternally and colocalizes with Vasa in germ plasm, suggesting that it may function exclusively in germ cell specification. To evaluate the conservation of the preformation mechanism among amphioxus species, we further analyze Vasa, Nanos, Piwil1, and Tdrd7 expression in two Asian amphioxus species, B. belcheri and B. japonicum. Their maternal transcripts all localize in similar patterns to those seen in B. floridae. In addition, we labeled putative PGCs with Vasa antibody to trace their dynamic distribution in developing larvae. Conclusions We identify additional germ plasm components in amphioxus and demonstrate the molecular distinction between the putative germline stem cells and somatic stem cells. Moreover, our results suggest that preformation may be a conserved mechanism for PGC specification among Branchiostoma species. Our Vasa antibody staining results suggest that after the late neurula stage, amphioxus PGCs probably proliferate with the tail bud cells during posterior elongation and are deposited near the forming myomere boundaries. Subsequently, these PGCs would concentrate at the ventral tip of the myoseptal walls to form the gonad anlagen.

Abstract
Introduction This study tested the hypothesis that cyclosporine (CsA)-supported syngeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ADMSC) therapy offered superior attenuation of acute ischemia–reperfusion (IR) kidney injury to either therapy alone. Methods Adult Sprague–Dawley rats (n = 40) were equally divided into group 1 (sham controls), group 2 (IR injury), group 3 (IR + CsA (20 mg/kg at 1 and 24 hours after procedure)), group 4 (syngeneic ADMSC (1.2×106) at 1, 6 and 24 hours after procedure), and group 5 (IR + CsA-ADMSC). Results By 72 hours after the IR procedure, the creatinine level and the ratio of urine protein to creatinine were highest in group 2 and lowest in group 1, and significantly higher in groups 3 and 4 than in group 5 (all P <0.05 for inter-group comparisons), but showed no differences between groups 3 and 4 (P >0.05). The inflammatory biomarkers at mRNA (matrix metalloproteinase-9, RANTES, TNF-α), protein (TNF-α, NF-κB, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, platelet-derived growth factor), and cellular (CD68+) levels of IR kidney showed a similar pattern compared with that of creatinine in all groups (all P <0.05 for inter-group comparisons). The protein expressions of oxidative stress (oxidized protein), reactive oxygen species (NADPH oxidases NOX-1, NOX-2), apoptosis (Bcl-2–associated X protein, caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase) and DNA damage (phosphorylated H2A histone family member X-positive, proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells) markers exhibited a pattern similar to that of inflammatory mediators amongst all groups (all P <0.05 for inter-group comparisons). Expressions of antioxidant biomarkers at cellular (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)) and protein (NADPH dehydrogenase (quinone)-1, HO-1, endothelial nitric oxide synthase) levels, and endothelial progenitor cell markers (C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4-positive, stromal cell-derived factor-1α-positive) were lowest in groups 1 and 2, higher in groups 3 and 4, and highest in group 5 (all P <0.05 for inter-group comparisons). Conclusion Combination therapy using CsA plus ADMSCs offers improved protection against acute IR kidney injury.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that human endogenous retrovirus W family (HERV-W) envelope gene (env) is related to various diseases but the underlying mechanism has remained poorly understood. Our previous study showed that there was abnormal expression of HERV-W env in sera of patients with schizophrenia. In this paper, we reported that overexpression of the HERV-W env elevated the levels of small conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channel protein 3 (SK3) in human neuroblastoma cells. Using a luciferase reporter system and RNA interference method, we found that functional cAMP response element site was required for the expression of SK3 triggered by HERV-W env. In addition, it was also found that the SK3 channel was activated by HERV-W env. Further study indicated that cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) was required for the activation of the SK3 channel. Thus, a novel signaling mechanism of how HERV-W env influences neuronal activity and contributes to mental illnesses such as schizophrenia was proposed.

Abstract
The complex structural transformation in crystals under static pressure or shock loading has been a subject of long-standing interest to materials scientists and physicists. The polymorphic transformation is of particular importance for iron (Fe), due to its technological and sociological significance in the development of human civilization, as well as its prominent presence in the earth's core. The martensitic transformation α→ε (bcc→hcp) in iron under shock-loading, due to its reversible and transient nature, requires non-trivial detective work to uncover its occurrence. Here we reveal refined microstructural fingerprints, needle-like colonies and three sets of {112}<111> twins with a threefold symmetry, with tell-tale features that are indicative of two sequential martensitic transformations in the reversible α→ε phase transition, even though no ε is retained in the post-shock samples. The signature orientation relationships are consistent with previously-proposed transformation mechanisms, and the unique microstructural fingerprints enable a quantitative assessment of the volume fraction transformed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic renal failure on dialysis can reduce the number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), but this biomarker has not been fully investigated in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A link between CKD and increased mononuclear cell apoptosis (MCA) in circulation has been reported but the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and stromal cell-derived factor (SDF)-1α, two angiogenesis factors, on circulating EPC levels in CKD has not been clarified. This study examined the relationships between the numbers of circulating EPCs and the severity of CKD, degree of MCA and serum levels of VEGF and SDF-1α in CKD patients. METHODS The numbers of circulating EPCs (CD31/CD34+, CD62E/CD34+, KDR/CD34+, CXCR4/CD34+) were measured in 166 patients with varying degrees of CKD under regular treatment at an outpatient department and in 30 volunteer control subjects. RESULTS CKD patients had significantly lower numbers of EPCs (p < 0.007), higher MCA in circulation and higher serum levels of VEGF and SDF-1 compared with the control subjects (all p < 0.001). Compared with patients with early CKD (stages I-III), patients with late CKD [stage IV-V or end-stage renal disease (ESRD)] had significantly lower numbers of EPCs (CXCR4/CD34+), higher MCA, and elevated serum levels of VEGF and SDF-1α (all p < 0.01). Serum VEGF level but not MCA or SDF-1α was strongly correlated with increased numbers of circulating EPCs. Multivariate analysis showed that ESRD along with lower serum albumin was independently predictive of lower numbers of circulating EPCs (p < 0.04). CONCLUSION Circulating EPCs were markedly reduced in CKD patients. ESRD was strongly and independently predictive of decreased numbers of circulating EPCs.

Abstract
Background Nonylphenol (NP), an environmental organic compound, has been demonstrated to enhance reactive-oxygen species (ROS) synthesis. Chronic exposure to low-dose adenine (AD) has been reported to induce chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods In this study, we tested the hypothesis that chronic exposure to NP will aggravate AD-induced CKD through increasing generations of inflammation, ROS, and apoptosis that could be attenuated by rosuvastatin. Fifty male Wistar rats were equally divided into group 1 (control), group 2 (AD in fodder at a concentration of 0.25%), group 3 (NP: 2 mg/kg/day), group 4 (combined AD & NP), and group 5 (AD-NP + rosuvastatin: 20 mg/kg/day). Treatment was continued for 24 weeks for all animals before being sacrificed. Results By the end of 24 weeks, serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels were increased in group 4 than in groups 1–3, but significantly reduced in group 5 as compared with group 4 (all p < 0.05). Histopathology scorings of renal-parenchymal and tubular damages were significantly higher in group 4 than in groups 1–3, but remarkably lower in group 5 compared with group 4 (all p < 0.01). Both gene and protein levels of inflammation, oxidative stress, ROS, and cellular apoptosis were remarkably higher in group 4 compared with groups 1–3, but lowered in group 5 than in group 4 (all p < 0.001). Conversely, both gene and protein levels of anti-oxidants, anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis were markedly increased in group 5 compared with group 4 (all p < 0.001). Conclusion NP worsened AD-induced CKD that could be reversed by rosuvastatin therapy.

Abstract
The purposes of this study are to evaluate the merits of surgical treatment, including subtotal parathyroidectomy (SP) and total parathyroidectomy (TP), in patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism (THPT) and compare the outcome of the two surgical options. Medical records of patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for THPT were retrospectively reviewed and long-term outcomes between the two groups were compared. Fourteen out of 488 renal transplantation recipients required parathyroidectomy for THPT during a 24-year follow-up period with a median follow-up of 35.5 [interquartile range (IQR), 19.3-133.3] months. All patients had hypercalcemia, whereas 13 had varying symptoms and one was asymptomatic. Median serum calcium level decreased from 12.4 (IQR, 11.9-12.6) mg/dL preoperatively to 8.9 (IQR, 8.1-9.4) mg/dL postoperatively (P = 0.001), whereas median intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) dropped from a preoperative level of 340.5 (IQR, 247-540) pg/mL to 55.1 (IQR, 24.4-66.4) pg/mL after surgery (P = 0.018). Comparison between patients receiving TP and SP revealed no difference in incidence of recurrence or permanent complications, whereas the former had significantly lower calcium levels (P = 0.048) and higher phosphorus levels (P = 0.017) compared with the latter. Moreover, a significant reduction in calcium level was noted in TP group on long-term follow-up compared with their immediately postoperative level (8.1 vs 9.0 mg/dL, respectively, P < 0.05), whereas there was no significant decrease in SP group. We concluded that parathyroidectomy is efficient and safe in treating THPT. Because TP would increase the risk of hypocalcemia, a less radical procedure (SP) is preferred.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Entecavir (ETV) is a potent inhibitor of viral replication in chronic hepatitis B. There is no published data concerning ETV therapy in nucleoside analogue (NUC)-naive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive renal transplant recipients (RTRs). METHODS We prospectively treated 27 HBsAg-positive RTRs with ETV since 2007. Serial HBV DNA was assessed at baseline and weeks 12, 24, 52 and 104 after treatment. A cohort of 19 patients who received 2-year lamivudine (3TC) therapy during 2004-2007 was used as a historical control. RESULTS Of the 27 RTRs, 18 (67%) were NUC-naive patients and 9 (33%) were 3TC-experienced without YMDD mutations. HBV DNA levels became undetectable in 70%, 74%, 96% and 100% of patients after 12, 24, 52 and 104 weeks, respectively, of ETV treatment without viral resistance. There was no change of glomerular filtration rate, and no lactic acidosis or myopathy during treatment. By comparison with the 19 3TC-treated patients, ETV-treated RTRs presented higher rates of undetectable HBV DNA than 3TC-treated RTRs (32%, 37%, 63% and 63% at 12, 24, 52 and 104 weeks; P<0.005). In an analysis excluding 9 patients from the ETV group who were also 3TC-experienced, the remaining 18 ETV-naive RTRs exhibited a better virological response at 52 and 104 weeks than 19 3TC-treated RTRs (P<0.05). Even in the 9 patients who overlapped in two cohorts, ETV exhibited a more rapid virological response than 3TC did, especially at 12 and 24 weeks (P=0.009). CONCLUSIONS ETV is effective in treating chronic hepatitis B in RTRs. ETV is safe with regards to renal graft function, lactic acidosis, myopathy and virological resistance.

Abstract
Ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) were planted in pots to remediate pyrene contaminated quartz sand (as a control group), alluvial and red soils amended with and without compost. The pyrene degradation percentages in quartz sand, alluvial soil, and red soil amended with compost (5%, w/w) and planted with ryegrass and alfalfa for 90 d growth were 98-99% and 97-99%, respectively, while those of pyrene in the corresponding treatments amended without compost but planted with ryegrass and alfalfa were 91-96% and 58-89%, respectively. Further, those of pyrene in the respective treatments amended with and without compost but unplanted were 54-77% and 51-63%, respectively. Pyrene contents in both roots and aboveground parts of ryegrass and alfalfa after 90 d growth in quartz sand and the two soils amended with or without compost were trace amounts. Statistical analyses for the parameters of ryegrass planted in red and alluvial soils including the concentrations of total water-soluble volatile low molecular weight organic acids, microbial population, pyrene degradation percentage, and spiked pyrene concentration show significant correlations at 5% and mostly 1% probability levels, by the analysis of variance. It was thus suggested that the interactions among the consortia of plant root exudates, microorganisms, and amended compost in rhizosphere soils could facilitate bioavailability of pyrene and subsequently enhance its dissipation.

Abstract
Although chronic exposure to environmental contaminants is hazardous to health, the association between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nonylphenol (NP), a common environmental compound, remains unclear. This study tested the hypothesis that chronic NP exposure aggravated adenine (AD)-induced CKD that could be mitigated with rosuvastatin treatment. Fifty Wistar rats were randomly (n=10/each group) categorized into normal controls (N(C)), NP only (2.0mg/kg/day), AD only (0.25% AD in fodder), combined NP-AD, and NP-AD with rosuvastatin (20.0mg/kg/day) (NP-AD-R(OSU)). All animals received treatment for 24 weeks prior to being sacrificed. Results showed that ratio of urine protein to creatinine were increased in NP-AD group than in groups N(C), NP, and AD, but reduced in NP-AD-R(OSU) group compared with NP-AD group (all p<0.003). Protein expression of TGF-β and phosphorylated Smad3, indexes of tissue fibrosis, were increased in NP-AD group than in groups N(C), NP and AD, but reduced in NP-AD-R(OSU) group compared with NP-AD group (all p<0.001). BMP-2 and phosphorylated Smad1/5, two indicators of anti-fibrosis, were lower in NP-AD group than in groups N(C), NP and AD, but higher in NP-AD-R(OSU) group compared with NP-AD group (all p<0.001). Protein expressions of JNK and PKC-α in membranous compartment were higher in group NP-AD than in groups N(C), NP and AD, but reduced in NP-AD-R(OSU) group compared with NP-AD group (all p<0.001). More TGF-β+cells but less BMP-2+, CD31+, vWF+and GR+cells were noted in groups AD and NP-AD than in groups N(C), NP and NP-AD-R(OSU) (all p<0.04). In conclusion, NP exposure worsened aggravated AD-induced CKD that could be ameliorated with rosuvastatin treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated the efficacy and outcome of laser photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) in patients with voiding difficulty due to prostatic obstruction induced by advanced prostate cancer (PC). METHODS We retrospectively studied the records of 13 patients with advanced PC and prostatic obstruction with a mean prostate volume of 65.0 ml. All of the 13 patients received PVP between 2006 and 2010 due to the symptoms of voiding difficulty or acute urinary retention (AUR; N = 10) refractory to medical treatment. Perioperative safety and functional results were evaluated. RESULTS Lasering time ranged from 24 to 20 minutes (mean 67 ± 26), during which 66-423 KJ (mean 172 ± 95) of laser energy was delivered. All patients could resume voiding function with a mean catheterization time of 3.0 days. CONCLUSIONS Our preliminary results suggest that PVP is a safe and effective procedure for relieving prostatic obstruction without intraoperative blood transfusion, water intoxication, or other complications in patients with advanced prostate cancer.
