Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been suggested that oral organisms in children are mainly those transmitted from their mothers. That may account for the relationship between caries levels in children and their parents. However, few studies have investigated the effect of trying to prevent vertical transmission of oral organisms on dental caries levels in children, and the findings in the studies are controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between measures to prevent vertical transmission of oral organisms and the caries experience in 3-year-old children. METHODS Data were collected from dental examinations for 3-year-old children and a self-administered questionnaire for their caregivers. Absence of maternal sharing of utensils and mouth-to-mouth feeding between caregivers and children was used as the variable about behaviour to prevent vertical transmission of oral organisms. Sex, age in months, dietary behaviour, oral health behaviour and sociodemographic factors were used as covariates. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Data for 3,035 children (73.5% of the subjects) were analysed. Caregivers who practised vertical transmission prevention tended to have better oral health behaviours. Multivariate logistic regression analysis did not show any significant association between behaviour to prevent vertical transmission and caries experience (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.86-1.41). This study suggests that caregiver behaviour to prevent vertical transmission was not effective in reducing levels of childhood caries.

Abstract
A silver-containing hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA) coating has been developed using thermal spraying technology. We evaluated the osteoconductivity of this coating on titanium (Ti) implants in rat tibiae in relation to bacterial infection in joint replacement. At 12 weeks, the mean affinity indices of bone formation of a Ti, an HA, a 3%Ag-HA and a 50%Ag-HA coating were 97.3%, 84.9%, 81.0% and 40.5%, respectively. The mean affinity indices of bone contact of these four coatings were 18.8%, 83.7%, 77.2% and 40.5%, respectively. The indices of bone formation and bone contact around the implant of the 3%Ag-HA coating were similar to those of the HA coating, and no significant differences were found between them (bone formation, p = 0.99; bone contact, p = 0.957). However, inhibition of bone formation was observed with the 50%Ag-HA coating. These results indicate that the 3%Ag-HA coating has low toxicity and good osteoconductivity, and that the effect of silver toxicity on osteoconductivity depends on the dose.

Abstract
Spin precession with frequencies up to 280 GHz is observed in Mn(3-δ)Ga alloy films with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant K(u)∼15 M erg/cm(3). The damping constant α, characterizing macroscopic spin relaxation and being a key factor in spin-transfer-torque systems, is not larger than 0.008 (0.015) for the δ=1.46 (0.88) film. Those are about one-tenth of α values for known materials with large K(u). First-principles calculations well describe both low α and large K(u) for these alloys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The structure of radiation oncology in designated cancer care hospitals in Japan was investigated in terms of equipment, personnel, patient load, and geographic distribution. The effect of changes in the health care policy in Japan on radiotherapy structure was also examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Japanese Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology surveyed the national structure of radiation oncology in 2007. The structures of 349 designated cancer care hospitals and 372 other radiotherapy facilities were compared. RESULTS Respective findings for equipment and personnel at designated cancer care hospitals and other facilities included the following: linear accelerators/facility: 1.3 and 1.0; annual patients/linear accelerator: 296.5 and 175.0; and annual patient load/full-time equivalent radiation oncologist was 237.0 and 273.3, respectively. Geographically, the number of designated cancer care hospitals was associated with population size. CONCLUSION The structure of radiation oncology in Japan in terms of equipment, especially for designated cancer care hospitals, was as mature as that in European countries and the United States, even though the medical costs in relation to GDP in Japan are lower. There is still a shortage of manpower. The survey data proved to be important to fully understand the radiation oncology medical care system in Japan.

Abstract
ABSTRACTMulti-walled carbon nanotubes synthesized by the carbon arc in hydrogen gas have very thin core channels. We have measured resonance Raman scattering of some samples synthesized in different conditions, and have observed radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks from 200 to 500 cm−1. Resonance effect of each peak is similar to that of single-walled nanotube. However, the peak frequencies are about 5 % higher than those of single-walled nanotubes, which is probably due to the inter-layer interaction. Further, the highest RBM peak splits in three peaks. The result on the resonance effect and the zone-folding band calculation suggest that the thinnest core nanotube is (4,3) that have four candidates of second outer nanotubes. This suggests that the different outer nanotube gives different degree of the interlayer interaction.

Abstract
Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6)-associated encephalitis or pneumonitis has been reported in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed individuals. Several MRI studies in patients with HHV-6-associated encephalitis have been presented. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies describing thin-section CT imaging in patients with HHV-6-associated pneumonitis have been reported. Here we describe a case of HHV-6-associated encephalitis and pneumonitis that developed after bone marrow transplantation. Thin-section CT images of the chest revealed ground-glass attenuation, consolidation and centrilobular nodules in both lungs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess pulmonary thin-section CT findings in patients with acute Haemophilus influenzae pulmonary infection. METHODS Thin-section CT scans obtained between January 2004 and March 2009 from 434 patients with acute H. influenzae pulmonary infection were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with concurrent infection diseases, including Streptococcus pneumoniae (n=76), Staphylococcus aureus (n=58) or multiple pathogens (n=89) were excluded from this study. Thus, our study group comprised 211 patients (106 men, 105 women; age range, 16-91 years, mean, 63.9 years). Underlying diseases included cardiac disease (n=35), pulmonary emphysema (n=23), post-operative status for malignancy (n=20) and bronchial asthma (n=15). Frequencies of CT patterns and disease distribution of parenchymal abnormalities, lymph node enlargement and pleural effusion were assessed by thin-section CT. RESULTS The CT findings in patients with H. influenzae pulmonary infection consisted mainly of ground-glass opacity (n=185), bronchial wall thickening (n=181), centrilobular nodules (n=137) and consolidation (n=112). These abnormalities were predominantly seen in the peripheral lung parenchyma (n=108). Pleural effusion was found in 22 patients. Two patients had mediastinal lymph node enlargement. CONCLUSION These findings in elderly patients with smoking habits or cardiac disease may be characteristic CT findings of H. influenzae pulmonary infection.

Abstract
A 65-year-old-man complained of coughing and fever. The urine showed microscopic hematuria. The level of myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA) was 167 EU. Two months later, he was admitted to our hospital with pulmonary hemorrhage and progressive renal dysfunction. He was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone followed by oral prednisolone with plasma exchanges, and his first pulmonary hemorrhage was relieved. Three weeks later, he suffered from a second diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage with central nervous system symptoms. He was treated again with intravenous methylprednisolone, plasma exchanges, and also intravenous pulse cyclophosphamide (IVCY), but he died of respiratory failure. Autopsy findings revealed microscopic polyangiitis (MPA)in the brain as well as in the lung, kidney and gastrointestinal system. The histopathological findings suggested that cerebral nervous system symptoms could have been caused by brain vasculitis in this case.

Abstract
Giant cell carcinoma of the lung is a very rare primary malignant tumour and localised right upper-lobe pulmonary oedema is also unusual. We report a case of giant cell carcinoma, which invaded the left atrium through the left pulmonary vein and caused localised right upper-lobe pulmonary oedema.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Moraxella catarrhalis is an important pathogen in the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and pulmonary thin-section CT findings in patients with acute M. catarrhalis pulmonary infection. METHODS Thin-section CT scans obtained between January 2004 and March 2009 from 292 patients with acute M. catarrhalis pulmonary infection were retrospectively evaluated. Clinical and pulmonary CT findings in the patients were assessed. Patients with concurrent infection including Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 72), Haemophilus influenzae (n = 61) or multiple pathogens were excluded from this study. RESULTS The study group comprised 109 patients (66 male, 43 female; age range 28-102 years; mean age 74.9 years). Among the 109 patients, 34 had community-acquired and 75 had nosocomial infections. Underlying diseases included pulmonary emphysema (n = 74), cardiovascular disease (n = 44) or malignant disease (n = 41). Abnormal findings were seen on CT scans in all patients and included ground-glass opacity (n = 99), bronchial wall thickening (n = 85) and centrilobular nodules (n = 79). These abnormalities were predominantly seen in the peripheral lung parenchyma (n = 99). Pleural effusion was found in eight patients. No patients had mediastinal and/or hilar lymph node enlargement. CONCLUSIONS M. catarrhalis pulmonary infection was observed in elderly patients, often in combination with pulmonary emphysema. CT manifestations of infection were mainly ground-glass opacity, bronchial wall thickening and centilobular nodules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare thin-section CT images from sarcoidosis patients who had either normal or elevated serum KL-6 levels. METHODS 101 patients with sarcoidosis who underwent thin-section CT examinations of the chest and serum KL-6 measurements between December 2003 and November 2008 were retrospectively identified. The study group comprised 75 sarcoidosis patients (23 male, 52 female; aged 19-82 years, mean 54.1 years) with normal KL-6 levels (152-499 U ml(-1), mean 305.7 U ml(-1)) and 26 sarcoidosis patients (7 male, 19 female; aged 19-75 years, mean 54.3 years) with elevated KL-6 levels (541-2940 U ml(-1), mean 802.4 U ml(-1)). Two chest radiologists, unaware of KL-6 levels, retrospectively and independently interpreted CT images for parenchymal abnormalities, enlarged lymph nodes and pleural effusion. RESULTS CT findings in sarcoidosis patients consisted mainly of lymph node enlargement (70/75 with normal KL-6 levels and 21/26 with elevated KL-6 levels), followed by nodules (50 and 25 with normal and elevated levels, respectively) and bronchial wall thickening (25 and 21 with normal and elevated levels, respectively). Ground-glass opacity, nodules, interlobular septal thickening, traction bronchiectasis, architectural distortion and bronchial wall thickening were significantly more frequent in patients with elevated KL-6 levels than those with normal levels (p<0.001, p<0.005, p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). By comparison, there was no significant difference in frequency of lymph node enlargement between the two groups. CONCLUSION These results suggest that serum KL-6 levels may be a useful marker for indicating the severity of parenchymal sarcoidosis.

Abstract
Radiologists often spend much time for re-reading some of the past free-text radiology reports and determining interval changes in the physical findings when creating a report for long term cases. The aim of this study was to propose the method to detect semantic similar descriptions in the free-text reports using the structuring method based on text-mining technology. In a previous study, we had developed the structuring method that can semantically analyze the free-text reports and convert them into the description unit consisting of five items: finding/diagnosis, modifier, region, regional modifier, and confidence. Our developed prototype system extracted similar descriptions from the free-text reports by calculating the similarity index between description units. We confirmed similar descriptions extracted by the system applied to free-text reports of cases which had more than one chest CT examination written in actual clinical situation. As a result, it became available to identify candidates of similar descriptions from free-text reports. In some cases regarding practical use, the similar descriptions could not be identified in the sentences which used paraphrasing or where the findings had status changes. A solution of identifying similarity in these cases was necessary to improve the method. With the presented method here, it is expected that interval changes in the findings can be visualized and applied it to support diagnosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical and thin-section CT findings in patients with acute Klebsiella pneumoniae pneumonia (KPP) alone and with concurrent infection. We retrospectively identified 160 patients with acute KPP who underwent chest thin-section CT examinations between August 1998 and August 2008 at our institution. The study group comprised 80 patients (54 male, 26 female; age range 18-97 years, mean age 61.5) with acute KPP alone, 55 (43 male, 12 female; age range 46-92 years, mean age 76.0) with KPP combined with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 25 (23 male, 2 female; age range 56-91 years, mean age 72.7) with KPP combined with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). Underlying diseases in patients with each type of pneumonia were assessed. Parenchymal abnormalities were evaluated along with enlarged lymph nodes and pleural effusion. In patients with concurrent pneumonia, underlying conditions such as cardiac diseases, diabetes mellitus and malignancy were significantly more frequent than in patients with KPP alone. The mortality rate in patients with KPP combined with MRSA or PA was significantly higher than in those with KPP alone. In concurrent KPP, CT findings of centrilobular nodules, bronchial wall thickening, cavity, bronchiectasis, nodules and pleural effusion were significantly more frequent with concurrent pneumonia than in those with KPP alone.

Abstract
Two versiconal hemiacetal acetate (VHA) reductase activities (designated I and II), which catalyzed the reaction from VHA to versiconol acetate (VOAc) during aflatoxin biosynthesis, were purified to apparent homogeneity from the cytosol fraction of the mycelia of Aspergillus parasiticus mutant NIAH-26 through the following chromatography steps: first, fractionation with ammonium sulfate and then fractionation in succession with phenyl-Sepharose, DEAE-Sepharose, Sephacryl S-300, hydroxylapatite, and Matrex gel Green A chromatography. VHA reductase I and VHA reductase II were completely separated at the end of the DEAE-Sepharose step. The apparent molecular masses of reductase I and reductase II were estimated (by gel filtration) to be approximately 390 kDa; their denaturing molecular masses were 39- and 40-kDa, respectively (by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). Their pI values were 6.6 and 6.0, respectively (as determined by isoelectric focusing), and the optimal pH values were 8.0 and 9.0, respectively, although both enzymes exhibited a broad optimal pH range of between 7.5 and 9.0. The K(m) values of reductase I and reductase II for VHA were 35.4 and 25.4 muM, respectively. On the other hand, in the cell-free experiments involving either VHA reductase fraction and high-performance liquid chromatography, both (2'S)- and (2'R)-VOAc enantiomers were formed from racemic VHA and more of the 2'R isomer than the 2'S isomer was produced, indicating that the VHA reductase fractions have very similar stereospecificities to the substrate.

Abstract
The new peak (near 1850 cm(-1)) assigned to carbon linear chain included in the centre of very thin innermost multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) has been verified by Raman spectroscopy. These MWNTs were produced by dc arc discharge of pure graphite rods in pure hydrogen gas and existed in the cathode deposit. In this paper, we clarified that the new Raman-peaks could also be observed in the cathode deposit including MWNTs produced by hydrogen dc arc discharge using graphite electrode with added Y or La. By changing the quantity of addition (Y or La), dc arc current and pressure of ambient hydrogen gas, the optimum condition to get maximum intensity of the new Raman-peaks was obtained. For the case of 1 wt% La, dc 50 A, H2 pressure of 50 Torr was found to be optimum, and the intensity of new Raman-peak was even higher than the G-band peak. For the case of 1 wt% Y, dc 50 A, H2 pressure of 50 Torr was optimum, but the intensity of new Raman-peak was weaker than the G-band peak. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that the crystallinity of MWNTs produced with pure graphite rod was better than those produced with added Y or La.

Abstract
In this work, we aim to study the hydrogen adsorption in several kinds of carbon nanotubes grown under different process conditions and to correlate the findings with the morphological microstructure and physical properties of these materials. The growth conditions and the behaviour with respect to hydrogen interaction of various carbon nanotubes are discussed, to establish microstructure-process-property relationships. In particular, we have analyzed several types of carbon nanotubes, namely one single-walled and five multi-walled having different tube diameter (due to different deposition techniques and conditions), different defectiveness and submitted to different surface treatments. To better understand the differences among the various samples, they have been investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy for the morphological and structural characteristics, thermo-gravimetric analysis for the sample purity and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis for the surface area. The experimental measurements on the ability of the different types of carbon nanotubes to adsorb and/or releasing hydrogen have been performed at 77 K with a volumetric Sievert analytical tool. Our findings clearly demonstrate a direct correlation between the exposed surface area and adsorbed hydrogen capacity, which confirms their linear relationship observed previously. For instance, single-walled nanotubes with surface area density of approximately 800 m2/g have showed hydrogen storage of approximately 1.7 wt% at a pressure of 35 atm. Adsorption process seems to be perfectly reversible. The adsorption values have been compared with a simple model, in order to evaluate the potentialities for carbon-based nanomaterials in future hydrogen storage applications.

Abstract
In this work, we produced SWNTs by a hydrogen DC arc discharge with evaporation of carbon anode containing 1 at% Fe catalyst in H2-Ar mixture gas. This was named as FH-arc discharge method. The as-grown SWNTs synthesized by FH-arc discharge method have high crystallinity. An oxidation purification process of as-grown SWNTs with H2O2 has been developed to remove the coexisting Fe catalyst nanoparticles. As a result, SWNTs with purity higher than 90 at% have been achieved. To exhibit remarkable characteristics, CNTs should be separated from the bundles and kept in homogeneous and stable suspensions. For this purpose, the SWNTs prepared by FH-arc discharge method also have been treated by Nanomizer process with some surfactants. SPM images showed that the SWNTs bundles had become thinner and shorter.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the ongoing structure of radiation oncology in Japan in terms of equipment, personnel, patient load, and geographic distribution to identify and improve any deficiencies. METHODS AND MATERIALS A questionnaire-based national structure survey was conducted from March to December 2008 by the Japanese Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (JASTRO). These data were analyzed in terms of the institutional stratification of the Patterns of Care Study. RESULTS The total numbers of new cancer patients and total cancer patients (new and repeat) treated with radiation in 2007 were estimated at 181,000 and 218,000, respectively. There were 807 linear accelerator, 15 telecobalt, 46 Gamma Knife, 45 (60)Co remote-controlled after-loading, and 123 (192)Ir remote-controlled after-loading systems in actual use. The linear accelerator systems used dual-energy function in 539 units (66.8%), three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy in 555 (68.8%), and intensity-modulated radiation therapy in 235 (29.1%). There were 477 JASTRO-certified radiation oncologists, 826.3 full-time equivalent (FTE) radiation oncologists, 68.4 FTE medical physicists, and 1,634 FTE radiation therapists. The number of interstitial radiotherapy (RT) administrations for prostate, stereotactic body radiotherapy, and intensity-modulated radiation therapy increased significantly. Patterns of Care Study stratification can clearly identify the maturity of structures based on their academic nature and caseload. Geographically, the more JASTRO-certified physicians there were in a given area, the more RT tended to be used for cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS The Japanese structure has clearly improved during the past 17 years in terms of equipment and its use, although a shortage of personnel and variations in maturity disclosed by Patterns of Care Study stratification were still problematic in 2007.

Abstract
Top-down fabrication processes for nanostructures are superior to bottom-up processes from the aspect of long-range order, but have limitations in their processing time and/or material selection. Here we developed a nanopatterning method for 'nanostripes' that incorporates deposition of a multilayer film on a microscale slope array and mechanical polishing. This method is used to fabricate a nanostripe structure consisting of two kinds of materials to form a stripe array on a silicon substrate. Although this nanopatterning method is categorized as a top-down fabrication process, the fabrication efficiency is quite high, because the number of nanostripes is 'multiplied' by the number of multilayered films. Another feature of the nanostripe is renewability; even if the nanostripe surface is damaged, the underlying nanostructure can be exposed and form a similar nanostripe by polishing. The nanostripe structure can be easily applied to a wide range of fields due to its ease of production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The present study aims to clarify the clinical features of non-hypertensive cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (CAA-L-ICH). METHODS We investigated clinical, laboratory, and neuroimaging findings in 41 patients (30, women; 11, men) with pathologically supported CAA-L-ICH from 303 non-hypertensive Japanese patients aged >OR=55, identified via a nationwide survey as symptomatic CAA-L-ICH. RESULTS The mean age of patients at onset of CAA-L-ICH was 73.2 +/- 7.4 years; the number of patients increased with age. The corrected female-to-male ratio for the population was 2.2, with significant female predominance. At onset, 7.3% of patients received anti-platelet therapy. In brain imaging studies, the actual frequency of CAA-L-ICHs was higher in the frontal and parietal lobes; however, after correcting for the estimated cortical volume, the parietal lobe was found to be the most frequently affected. CAA-L-ICH recurred in 31.7% of patients during the average 35.3-month follow-up period. The mean interval between intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs) was 11.3 months. The case fatality rate was 12.2% at 1 month and 19.5% at 12 months after initial ICH. In 97.1% of patients, neurosurgical procedures were performed without uncontrollable intraoperative or post-operative hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed the clinical features of non-hypertensive CAA-L-ICH, including its parietal predilection, which will require further study with a larger number of patients with different ethnic backgrounds.

Abstract
Abstract
Endocrine therapy is the most important treatment of choice for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Potential mechanisms for resistance to endocrine therapy involve estrogen receptor (ER)-coregulatory proteins and cross-talk between ER and other growth factor-signaling networks. However, the factors and pathways responsible for endocrine therapy resistance, particularly resistance to aromatase inhibitors, have not been clearly established. Sixteen postmenopausal patients with ERΑ-positive primary breast cancer were treated daily with 25 mg of exemestane (an aromatase inhibitor) for 6 months. Expressions of ERΑ, ERΒ, progesterone receptor (PgR), androgen receptor (AR), AIB1, aromatase, EGFR, HER2, Ki67, cyclin D1, p53, Bcl2, Stat5 and IGFBP5, and phosphorylations of ERΑ serine (Ser) 118, ERΑ Ser167, Akt Ser473 and p44/42 MAPK threonine (Thr) 202/ tyrosine (Tyr) 204 were examined by immunohistochemistry on pretreatment tumor biopsies and posttreatment surgical specimens. Analyses were made to test for correlations with response to exemestane. Of the 16 patients, 7 responded and 9 retained stable disease. High-level expression of AIB1 and phosphorylation of Akt Ser473 were significantly associated with a better response to exemestane, suggesting that these factors could be considered as predictors of exemestane response. Expressions of ERΑ, ERΒ, PgR, aromatase, Ki67, cyclin D1 and p53, and phosphorylations of ERΑ Ser118, ERΑ Ser167 and p44/42 MAPK Thr202/Tyr204 were decreased, whereas expressions of Stat5 and IGFBP5 were increased in posttreatment specimens compared to the values in pretreatment biopsies. Thus, the analysis of factors involved in the estrogen-dependent growth-signaling pathways may be useful in identifying patients responsive to exemestane.

Abstract
Aflatoxins are toxic and carcinogenic secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. The contamination of crops, feeds, and foods with aflatoxins can have serious effects on the health of humans and animals. Although many studies have been done to develop aflatoxin-control strategies, most are limited in their effectiveness. As part of an effort to develop control procedures, we have devised simple and safe methods that are useful for identifying microorganisms that effectively inhibit aflatoxin production by fungi. These include the microtitre agar plate assay using norsolorinic acid-accumulating mutant fungi, the ultraviolet light photography method using an instant film, the tip culture method, a convenient RNA extraction method for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis, and other methods. Results of a recent trial have shown that Achromobacter xylosoxidans significantly inhibited aflatoxin production by A. parsiticus, and that the main inhibitory substance produced by the bacterium was cyclo(L-leucyl-L-prolyl). This result confirms that the methods described herein are useful for identifying microorganisms that inhibit aflatoxin production by fungi and could contribute to the development of methods to reduce aflatoxin contamination in commodities.

Post-translational modification and degradation of proteins by the ubiquitin-proteasome system are key regulatory mechanisms in cellular responses to various stimuli. The NF-kappaB signaling pathway is controlled by the ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. RelA/p65, which is a main subunit of NF-kappaB, is ubiquitinated for degradation by SOCS-1, but the functional mechanism of its ubiquitination remains poorly understood. In this study we show that phosphorylation of RelA/p65 at Ser276 prevents its degradation by ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. In contrast, impairment of Ser276 phosphorylation affects constitutive degradation of RelA/p65. Importantly, we identify Pim-1 as a further kinase responsible for the phosphorylation of RelA/p65 at Ser276. Depletion of Pim-1 hinders not only Ser276 phosphorylation but also transactivation of RelA/p65 target genes. We also show that Pim-1 contributes to recruitment of RelA/p65 to kappaB-elements to activate NF-kappaB signalling after TNF-alpha stimulation. In concert with these results, the knockdown of Pim-1 impairs IL-6 production and augments apoptosis by interfering RelA/p65 activation. These findings provide a model in which Pim-1 phosphorylation of RelA/p65 at Ser276 allows defense against ubiquitin-mediated degradation and whereby exerts activation of NF-kappaB signalling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney failure is a common complication in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP). It has been suggested that advanced glycation end products (AGEs) play an important role in the development and pathogenesis of FAP. MATERIAL AND METHODS To evaluate the impact of AGEs on FAP patients' kidney dysfunction, we measured AGE in serum and urine of 28 FAP patients and 18 healthy controls by AGE-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Immunohistochemistry utilizing antibodies to AGE and the receptor for AGE (RAGE) were used on kidney tissue from 3 FAP patients and 3 diabetic patients to disclose a correlation between amyloid deposits and AGE-RAGE. RESULTS The glomeruli of FAP patients were heavily deposited with amyloid and the glomerular size was enlarged. The space between Bowman's capsule and glomerulus was totally covered by the enlarged glomerulus. AGE and RAGE were deposited in glomeruli and tubuli and correlated with amyloid deposits. Decreased AGE levels in the liver-transplanted FAP patients' serum compared with that of non-transplanted patients were noted, and AGE concentration in serum tended to be higher in non-transplanted FAP patients compared with normal control subjects. There were no differences in the AGE urine levels in FAP patients compared with controls. No correlation could be found between AGE in urine and serum compared with serum albumin, serum creatinine and creatinine clearance. CONCLUSIONS The accumulation of AGE, RAGE and amyloid in the kidney of FAP patients suggests that these molecules play an important role in the origin and pathogenesis of renal failure in FAP patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between patient characteristics and reasons for extraction of permanent teeth. METHODS 5131 dentists were selected from the list of the membership directory of the Japan Dental Association by systematic random selection. The dentists were asked to record the reason for each extraction of permanent teeth during a period from February 1 to 7, 2005. Reasons for tooth extraction were assigned to five groups: caries, fracture of teeth weakened by caries or endodontics, periodontal diseases, orthodontics and other reasons. We used cross tabulation and multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate the relationships between patient characteristics and reasons for tooth extraction. RESULTS 2001 dentists (response rate of 39.0%) returned the forms, and complete information on 7333 patients was obtained. A total of 3,196 (43.6%) patients underwent tooth extraction due to caries and its sequela, and 2721 (37.1%) patients underwent tooth extraction due to periodontal disease. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that denture wearers were more likely to undergo tooth extraction due to periodontal disease in all age groups (p < 0.05). Males tended to undergo tooth extraction due to periodontal disease than did females in all age groups (p < 0.05) except for age group 30-49. Subjects with 19 or less teeth were more likely to undergo tooth extraction due to periodontal disease in the age groups 30-49 (p < 0.001) and 50-69 (p < 0.001). In the age group of 50 years or older, female (p<0.01) and the possession of 20 or more natural teeth (p < 0.05) were related to caries extraction. However, there was no clear relationship between caries extraction and patient characteristics under 50 years old. CONCLUSION There was a significant relationship between denture wearing and periodontal extraction. In the middle aged population, patients with 19 or less teeth lost their teeth mainly due to periodontal disease.

Abstract
2556 Background: There is a close relationship between carboplatin clearance and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Calvert developed the following formula for the dosing of carboplatin: dose (mg) = target area under the concentration versus time curve (AUC, mg ml-1 min) × [GFR (ml min-1) + 25]. However, this formula has not been evaluated in Japanese population. In this study, we prospectively evaluated renal function and carboplatin clearance in Japanese cancer patients. Methods: GFR was measured by inulin clearance before chemotherapy. The dose of carboplatin was determined by Calvert's formula using adjusted 24-h creatinine clearance (Ccr) by adding 0.2 (mg dl-1) to serum creatinine. A pharmacokinetic study was performed during the first cycle of the chemotherapy. Blood samples were obtained at 10 points within 24 hours. The observed AUC of carboplatin and the observed carboplatin clearance were calculated. Results: Inulin clearance was estimated in 28 cancer patients. Estimation of renal function with adjusted 24-h Ccr and estimated GFR equation (eGFR) were unbiased [mean prediction error (MPE) = -2.3%, 5.2% respectively] and acceptably precise [root mean squared error (RMSE) = 23.7%, 25.7% respectively], whereas non-adjusted Ccr and the Cockcroft-Gault equation overestimated GFR (MPE = 24.2%, 12.5% and RMSE = 37.2%, 32.7% respectively). Observed carboplatin clearance was proportional to GFR in range of renal function in this study (r = 0.903) and we verified the linearity. Non-renal clearance of carboplatin in Japanese cancer patients was 5.6 (ml min-1). Conclusions: 24-h Ccr adjusted by adding 0.2 (mg dl-1) to serum creatinine and eGFR were useful in assessing renal function for carboplatin dosing. It was suggested that non-renal clearance of carboplatin in Japanese cancer patients was less than 25 (ml min-1). No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
S-1 is an oral anticancer agent that combines tegafur, a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxypyridine (CDHP), an inhibitor of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. We examined the effects of aging on the pharmacokinetics of the components of S-1. The median area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of active 5-FU did not significantly differ between 10 patients 75 years or older and 53 patients younger than 75 years (P = 0.598, Mann-Whitney U test). It is interesting to note that the median oral clearance of tegafur in patients 75 years or older was significantly lower than that in patients younger than 75 years (P = 0.011). Furthermore, the median AUC of CDHP was significantly higher in patients 75 years or older than in those younger than 75 years (P = 0.004). This effect was caused by reduced renal function in the elderly, because CDHP is excreted in the urine by glomerular filtration. The opposing effects of aging on the oral clearance of tegafur and the AUC of CDHP may offset each other, leading to unchanged systemic exposure of 5-FU.

Abstract
In the field of spintronics, researchers have manipulated magnetization using spin-polarized currents. Another option is to use a voltage-induced symmetry change in a ferromagnetic material to cause changes in magnetization or in magnetic anisotropy. However, a significant improvement in efficiency is needed before this approach can be used in memory devices with ultralow power consumption. Here, we show that a relatively small electric field (less than 100 mV nm(-1)) can cause a large change (approximately 40%) in the magnetic anisotropy of a bcc Fe(001)/MgO(001) junction. The effect is tentatively attributed to the change in the relative occupation of 3d orbitals of Fe atoms adjacent to the MgO barrier. Simulations confirm that voltage-controlled magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions is possible using the anisotropy change demonstrated here, which could be of use in the development of low-power logic devices and non-volatile memory cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND S-1 is an oral anticancer agent that combines tegafur (FT) with 5-chloro-2,4-dihydroxypyridine (CDHP) and potassium oxonate. The recommended initial dose of S-1 is 120 mg/day for patients with a body surface area (BSA) of > or =1.5 m(2) in Japan. METHODS We examined the effects of using this fixed dose on the pharmacokinetics of FT, CDHP, and active 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on the basis of actual BSA. The pharmacokinetics was compared between patients with a BSA of 1.5-1.75 m(2) and those with a BSA of > or =1.75 m(2). RESULTS The median areas under the time-concentration curves (AUCs) of 5-FU and CDHP were significantly lower in patients with a BSA of > or =1.75 m(2) than in those with a BSA of 1.5-1.75 m(2) (P = 0.005 and 0.006, respectively; Mann-Whitney U-test). There was no difference between the groups in the median AUC of FT. CONCLUSION Systemic exposure to 5-FU is significantly lower in Japanese cancer patients with a large BSA of >1.75 m(2) who received the recommended fixed dose of S-1.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare high-resolution CT findings among cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP) patients with normal and elevated serum KL-6 levels. Chest CT scans performed between April 1999 and April 2007 in 20 COP patients with a normal KL-6 level and 17 COP patients with an elevated KL-6 level were evaluated retrospectively by two chest radiologists. The CT findings in the COP patients with either a normal or an elevated KL-6 level mainly consisted of consolidation (n = 17 and n = 13, respectively) followed by ground-glass opacity (n = 11 and n = 13, respectively). Traction bronchiectasis and architectural distortion were significantly more frequent in patients with an elevated KL-6 level than in those with normal levels (n = 7 and n = 1, and n = 13 and n = 3, respectively) (p = 0.0077 and p = 0.00017, respectively). In follow-up CT scans, a relapse within 1 year after initial treatment with steroids, performed in 16 patients with a normal KL-6 level and 16 with an elevated KL-6 level, occurred in 2 (12.5%) patients with a normal KL-6 level and in 6 (37.5%) with an elevated KL-6 level. The frequency of relapse in patients with an elevated KL-6 level was higher than in those with a normal KL-6 level; however, no significant difference between the two groups was observed (p = 0.103). In conclusion, CT findings of traction bronchiectasis and architectural distortion in COP patients are associated with increased serum KL-6 levels, which might be related to a relapse after treatment.
