Abstract
The levels of plasma endothelin in 46 patients with psoriasis vulgaris and the levels of endothelin in skin tissue of 25 cases were determined by RIA. The results showed that: (1) The plasma levels of endothelin in patients with psoriasis vulgaris was significantly increased compared with that of the controls (P < 0.01), so was the active stage group compared with the stable stage group (P < 0.01); (2) The level of endothelin in skin lesions of patients was significantly higher than that of the uninvolved skin. These findings suggest that endothelin might play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate various manifestations and treatment of subclinical Sjögren's syndrome (SS). METHODS A long term clinical, laboratory and sialographic observations were performed in 24 patients with subclinical SS. Injectin of thymosin intramusularly was used to treat the patients and clinical effect of this treatment was evaluated. RESULTS All of 24 cases had experienced recurrent parotid swellings (RPS) for 2-17 years (mean 7 years) before dry mouth and dry eyes occurred and all of them were misdiagnosed as chronic suppurative parotitis or sialadenitis. Follow-up showed that all of these patients developed SS. Vasculitis was found in 8 cases, purpura in 2 cases. The vascular involvement was relatively common in subclinical SS. Main sialographic findings was sialectasis of terminal ducts with irregular dilation of main duct. Frequency of RPS was markedly decreased in the patients treated with thymosin. CONCLUSION The proposal of subclinical SS has theoretical value for understanding the entity and reclassification of chronic suppurative parotitis, and has guide value for diagnosis and treatment of SS in the early stage. Injection of thymosin is considered an effective therapy to reduce RPS in subclinical SS.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus-16 E6 and E7 inactivate the tumor suppressors p53 and pRB, respectively, and cooperate during malignant transformation, but the downstream molecular events remain incompletely understood. Using fibroblast cell lines derived from mice with a homozygous disruption of the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) gene (R- cells) and their wild-type (WT) littermates, we have stably transfected plasmids encoding E6 and E7 proteins and examined their transforming potential in these cells. Consistent with previous studies using NIH3T3 cells, pooled cultures of E7-transfected WT cells readily formed colonies after suspension in soft agar. In contrast, R- cells were not transformed by E7. E6 had little transforming activity in WT (WT/E6) or R- (R-/E6) cells. However, transfection of R- cells with E6 plus E7 resulted in extensive colony formation. Because IGF-1R and E6 appear to be functionally equivalent in this transformation assay and both have been implicated in antiapoptotic responses, we investigated the apoptotic responses of the cells after exposure to the potent protein kinase C inhibitor, staurosporine. Compared to WT cells, R- cells were relatively resistant to staurosporine-induced apoptosis, but susceptibility to staurosporine was decreased in both WT/E6 and R-/E6 cells relative to WT and R- cells transfected with mock vector, respectively. In fibroblast cells from p53 gene knockout mice, transfection with E6 also conferred relative resistance to staurosporine-induced apoptosis. Our data suggest that transformation by E7 requires the participation of the IGF-1R and that E6 may assist E7 in transforming R- cells by functionally substituting for the IGF-1R. Because IGF-1R activated by its ligands (IGF-1 and IGF-2) protects cells from apoptosis, the role of the IGF-1R and E6 in transformation by E7 is probably related to the recruitment of survival pathways. In addition, because E6 suppressed apoptosis in p53 knockout cells, our data also suggest that E6 may participate in a p53-independent process that protects cells from apoptosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was to evaluate the effects of prevention and control regarding programs on typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever, in Guizhou province, from 2007 to 2012, to provide evidence for the improvement of related programs. METHODS Data on typhoid fever and paratyphoid including information on epidemics, individual, cases, measures for prevention and control programs taken and relative government documents were collected and analyzed in Guizhou province, from 2007 to 2012. Information related to the average annual incidence, nature of outbreaks, time span before confirmed diagnosis was made, unit which carried the case report, proportion of laboratory confirmed diagnosed cases and case-management were compared between 2007-2009 and 2010-2012 descriptively while chi-square test with Excel and EpiInfo software were used for data analysis. RESULTS In the period of 2007-2009, a total of 5 978 typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever cases were reported in Guizhou province with the average yearly incidence as 5.29/100 000. In the period of 2010-2012, 2 765 cases were reported with the average yearly incidence as 2.57/100 000. When compared to the former, data from the latter period showed that the average yearly incidence had declined 51.31% in all the prefectures. There were still some outbreaks appeared but the total number of cases involved reduced 87.50%. The time span before the confirmation of diagnosis became shorter but the difference was not statistically significant (χ² = 0.08, P = 0.99). Number of cases reported by hospitals at county or above had 11.51% of increase while those cases reported at the township hospitals or below decreased for 61.47% . The proportion of laboratory diagnosed cases increased 23.63%. Rates of timeliness on cards being filled in, input and audited showed increase of 8.44%, 6.76% and 2.40% respectively. CONCLUSION Successful measures for prevention and control on typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever had been remarkably taken in Guizhou province, but the potential risk of outbreaks still existed in some areas, suggesting that health education and surveillance programs including laboratory diagnosis, should be strengthened.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Gentian Violet was used for treating the chronic parotitis since 1960's, but the dosage and the histologic changes of the tissues were undefined until now. We try to study the histologic changes of the salivary glands, heart, liver and kidneys after large volume of gentian violet was injected into the parotid gland through the duct. METHODS 5 ml of Gentian Violet was injected to each side of 6 dogs. The macropathologic and histologic examination of the salivary glands, heart, liver and kidneys were performed at 30 min, 60 min, 120 min, 21 days and 9 months separately after the perfusion. RESULTS Local swelling was obvious in two or three days after infusion and subsided in one week in most of the dogs. Degeneration of the gland took place after 20 days. After 9 months, the parotid gland tissues were replaced by the connective tissues. On the other hand, no histologic change was observed in heart, liver and kidney in the investigation. CONCLUSION The Gentian Violet can cause degeneration of the parotid gland including the duct and replaced by connective tissues later. There is no obvious changes were noted in other organs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Insomnia disorder (ID) is a persistent difficulty sleeping, often accompanied by anxiety and depression, which seriously reduces a person's quality of life. Dietary changes in insomnia patients have been a concern. To explore the rationality of diet in patients with ID and its correlation with insomnia in ID patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study included 216 patients diagnosed with ID and 197 individuals as the healthy control (HC) group who attended the neurology outpatient clinic or sleep clinic at Henan Provincial People's Hospital between September 2018 and November 2019. Through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), sleep and mental conditions were assessed in the ID and HC groups. The dietary intake structure of both groups was observed using the food frequency table. Meanwhile, the relationship between dietary intake and sleep quality was analyzed based on the logistics regression. RESULTS Individuals in the ID group had significantly higher age, weight, and body mass index compared to the HC group (p<0.01). Individuals within the ID category demonstrated a heightened daily consumption of carbohydrates, grains, tubers, and legumes relative to the healthy control group. In contrast, the intake levels of vegetables, fruits, and nuts were diminished compared to the HC group, with this difference being statistically significant (p<0.01). A positive correlation was observed between the daily consumption of grains, tubers, and legumes and PSQI scores. Conversely, a negative association was found between daily consumption of vegetables and fruits. CONCLUSIONS ID patients exhibit an elevated intake of carbohydrates, whereas the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and nuts is deficient in comparison to the healthy cohort, implying that a distorted dietary structure might be a contributing factor to ID onset. Sensible and scientific dietary guidance is of considerable significance in preventing the onset of ID and facilitating its management. However, the derived conclusions warrant further extensive research.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with/without induction chemotherapy has been the standard therapy (ST) for locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC). However, most patients supporting these clinical trials were younger than 65 years of age. For the toxicity of CRT and the poor tolerance of elderly patients, it is still controversial whether ST could bring the most promising survival benefits for elderly NPC compared with individualized therapy (IT). Thus, in this real-world study we compared the survival and safety of ST with IT in elderly LA-NPC to explore an effective and tolerable treatment strategy for elderly LA-NPC. MATERIALS/METHODS A total of 109 newly diagnosed elderly LA-NPC (>65 years old) from Jan. 2013-Jul. 2020 were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the ST group and IT group according to the original treatment tendency. ST refers to CRT with/without induction chemotherapy. IT group included patients not suitable for CRT and were given individualized treatment fully discussed by at least two oncologists from our head and neck team. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) generated a matched cohort of ST and IT. The survivals and treatment related toxicities were compared between the two groups. RESULTS There were 46 cases in the ST group and 63 cases in the IT group. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate, cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate, progression- free survival (PFS) rate, local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) rate and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) rate were 68.64%, 76.42%, 73.69%, 85.67% and 86.82%, respectively. By 1:1PSM, 35 cases in each group were matched. No significant differences of OS, CSS, PFS, LRFS and DMFS were found between ST and IT groups in the PSM-matched cohorts (P = 0.87, P = 0.79, P = 0.51, P = 0.81 and P = 0.24, respectively). Compared with patients in the ST group, cases received IT were associated with less severe acute toxicities including anemia, leucopenia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSION For elderly LA-NPC, IT had similar survivals while less severe toxicities compared with ST, which revolutionarily challenged the role of ST for elderly LA-NPC. In the future, more studies are need to explore a less toxic treatment modality with noninferior efficacy for elderly LA-NPC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic-assisted radical surgery for right hemicolonic cancer with a combined approach. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of clinical data from 102 patients who underwent laparoscopic-assisted radical right hemicolectomy for right hemicolonic cancer at the Department of General Surgery, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, between January 2021 and September 2023. All patients received preoperative diagnoses of right hemicolonic cancer via CT and e-colonoscopy. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the surgical approach: the combined approach group (n = 51) and the traditional approach group (n = 51). Perioperative outcomes and follow-up data were compared between the two groups. RESULTS A total of 102 patients were included in the statistical criteria. Comparison of baseline data between the two groups showed no statistically significant differences (all p > 0.05). Compared with the traditional access group, the surgical stem-oriented combined access group had a shorter operative time [(180.69 ± 47.484) min vs. (226.18 ± 45.884) min, t = - 4.920, p < 0.001] and less intraoperative blood loss [(89.71 ± 79.350) ml vs. (149.31 ± 104.633) ml. Z = - 3.370, p = 0.001. CONCLUSIONS Surgical stem-oriented modified combined approach laparoscopic radical right hemicolectomy for right hemicolonic cancer is safe and feasible and has the advantages of low surgical difficulty, shortened operative time, reduced intraoperative bleeding, and accelerated postoperative recovery. In addition, the combined approach may be more agreeable for beginners to master, and the procedure may be easier to promote and popularize. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov (2024-KY-026-01).

Abstract
We characterized mechanisms of growth control involving insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), IGF-2, and IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) by investigating their expression in human cervical cancer cell lines, primary cervical tumor cell cultures, and normal ectocervical epithelial cells maintained in short-term culture. By reverse transcription followed by PCR, IGF-1 mRNA was not detected in any of the cell lines, whereas IGF-2 mRNA transcripts were detected in all of them. Using the RNase protection assay, low levels of IGF-2 mRNA were also detected in all of the cervical cancer cell lines, primary cervical tumor cell cultures, and normal ectocervical cultures tested, but no IGF-1 transcripts were detected. Scatchard analysis revealed 3- and 5-fold increases in IGF-1R expression by the primary cervical cancer cell cultures and cervical cancer cell lines, respectively, compared with the normal ectocervical cells. In proliferation assays, epidermal growth factor (EGF) consistently enhanced cervical cancer cell growth, but an antisense oligonucleotide to IGF-2 uniformly inhibited the EGF-induced mitogenic effect. These studies suggest that autocrine production of IGF-2 and overexpression of the IGF-1R are important components controlling the proliferation of cervical carcinoma cells, and that autocrine IGF-2 production in cervical cancer cells may participate in the mitogenic signaling of EGF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the modulatory effect of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) on voltage-gated sodium currents(VGSCs) in rat caudate nucleus (CN) neurons with kainic acid (KA)-induced injury and explore the molecular mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of 2-AG. METHODS Primary cultures of CN neurons isolated from neonatal SD rats were treated with KA, 2-AG+KA, RIM (a CB1 receptor antagonist) +2-AG+KA, or vehicle only (as control). After 7 days in primary culture, the neurons were treated with corresponding agents for 12 h (RIM and 2-AG were added at the same time; KA was added 30 min later) before recording of current density changes, current-voltage characteristics, activation and inactivation kinetics of VGSCs (INa) using whole-cell patch clamp technique. RESULTS In cultured CN neurons, KA significantly increased current density of VGSCs (P=0.009) as compared with vehicle treatment.KA also produced a hyperpolarizing shift in the activation curve of INa and significantly increased the absolute value of V1/2 for activation (P=0.008).Addition of 2-AG in the culture medium obviously prevented KA-induced increase of INa (P=0.009) and hyperpolarizing shift in the activation curve of INa, and significantly reduced the value of V1/2 for activation(P=0.009)in a CB1 receptor-dependent manner.2-AG alone did not affect the density, activation or deactivation of VGSCs in rat CN neurons. CONCLUSION In excitotoxic events, endogenous 2-AG can offer neuroprotection by modulating VGSCs in the CN neurons through a CB1 receptor-dependent pathway.

Abstract
In order to research the states of dentine surface and dentine surface primed with coupling agent, we used microscope, transmission electron microscope (TEM) and solid fluorescence method. Observed under microscope, patterning of dentinal tubules and their poles was very explicit; through the view of interface between coupling agent adsorbed and human dentine powder by TEM, it was revealed that the coupling agent was adsorbed onto the dentine surface as if it "grew out" of the dentine surface; through examination of interface between the coupling agent adsorbed and dentine surface by fluorescence spectrum, which differed from that of the coupling agent or dentine surface, i.e., this fluorescence spectrum of interface changed obviously (red shift). This phenomenon indicated that there was a chemical reaction occurring between tooth surface and adsorbed coupling agent. Therefore we can conclude that the three examinations are necessary to provide the argument for establishment of chemical bonding mechanism between dentine and coupling agent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the relationship between serum cholinesterase, albumin and plasma prothrombin activity and the pathology of the liver in patients with viral hepatitis. METHODS Totally 135 patients diagnosed as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and/or severe hepatitis with needle biopsy of liver were enrolled in this study. Serum cholinesterase and albumin of the patients were detected with enzyme rate method; meanwhile, their plasma prothrombin activity was detected with turbidimetry test. RESULTS The percentage of decrease of the level of serum cholinesterase was higher than that of albumin and plasma prothrombin activity in chronic mild and moderate hepatitis; the level of serum cholinesterase, albumin and plasma prothrombin activity decreased gradually followed by the exacerbation of inflammatory reaction (P<0.001) and by the elevation of degree of fibrosis of the liver (P <0.001) their correlation coefficient was 0.720 to 0.778 (P<0.001). CONCLUSION The level of serum cholinesterase could better a nd more sensitively reflect the synthetic function and the damage of the pathology of the liver than that of albumin and plasma prothrombin activity could do, they all negatively correlated with the pathology of the liver.

Abstract
Recombinant erythropoietin is a glycoprotein which is strongly hydrophobic. We purified recombinant erythropoietin by RP-HPLC. The results showed that 30 nm Spherisorb C4 reversed-phase column and acetonitrile-TFA mobile phase with gradient elution, could readily isolate recombinant erythropoietin from crude samples with high speed and efficiency. Erythropoietin could be eluted at the concentration of about 50% acetonitrile with appropriate sample purity and elution gradient. When RP-HPLC is used as a final step of purification, the purity of sample should be at least 60%. The purity of the product tested by SDS-PAGE was nearly 100%. And the specific activity of the product was about 1.96 x 10(3) IU/g protein.

Abstract
Sialographic follow-up studies of 36 cases of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) were performed with the duration of 5-72 months (mean 25 months). Three groups were divided according to the intenational criteria: secondary group, 14 cases (xerophthalmia, or/and xerostomia, and connective tissue diseases), primary group, 14 cases (xerostomia and xerophthalmia), and possible group, 8 cases (xerophthalmia or xerostomia only). Sialographic findings at follow-up examination included (1) delayed evacuation, which may occur as early as 5 months later; (2) increased punctate sialectasis; (3) decreased punctate sialectasis with globular increase; (4) Punctate, globular, and cavity sialectasis with radiolucent sialolith; and (5) centripetal atrophy. The cases with secondary and possible SS without xerostomia demonstrated little involvement of the parotid gland, without sialectasis. But sialodochitis was shown when radiolucent sialolith formed. The stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR) was closely related to sialographic appearance, i.e., the cases with lower value of SWSFR showed more sialectasis sialographically, but with higher SWSFR value, and less sialectasis.
