Abstract
Light-cured resin composites are a viable option for restoring Class I and Class II cavities; however, several researchers have reported postoperative sensitivity in such restorations. In this in vivo study, 80 teeth with Class I and Class II cavities were selected. They were divided into four groups of 20 teeth each, to be restored with composite resin using different treatment protocols. Postoperative sensitivity to cold water at various temperatures was assessed for up to three months. The data was interpreted using Chi Square Test for homogeneity among the groups, and Z values of significance for pair-wise evaluation were determined. It was found that use of self-etching primers as bonding agents underneath the composite resin restorations were associated with significantly decreased incidence of postoperative sensitivity to cold stimuli.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze ultrasonographic features for the complications of breast augmentation with polyamide hydrogel injection. METHODS Clinical study was made for 101 patients who had received the polyamide hydrogel injection for augmentation mammoplasty by using the ultrasonographic examination. RESULTS The 195 treated breasts in 98 patients suffered from injectable layer disorder, 1 breast for hematoma, 7 breasts in 5 patients for abscess (infection), 2 breasts in 2 patients for cancer and 3 breasts in 3 patients for fibroadenomas. CONCLUSIONS Ultrasonography may be of great diagnostic value for the complications of breast augmentation with polyamide hydrogel injection.

Abstract
The use of antibiotic-impregnated acrylic cement as a bone spacer between the intervals of revision hip arthroplasty for infection has been widely practiced. Vascular injuries caused by the migration of a cement spacer with subsequent erosion of the vessel wall have never been reported. A 67-year-old woman presented with tense swelling over her left lower extremity and hemarthroses of the left hip after implantation of a cement spacer for infected hip arthroplasty. Complete external compression of the external iliac vein and laceration of the iliac artery by the spacer were found. The symptoms were resolved after surgical debridement, removal of the spacer and femoral stem, and repair of the vessel. Cautious placement of a cement spacer in the acetabular fossa accompanied with poor bone stock must be emphasized.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical manifestations and explore suitable treatments for the complications induced by polyacrylamide hydrogel(PAHG) injection for augmentation mammoplasty. METHODS The symptoms, physical signs and treatments of the 118 cases were analyzed and summarized. RESULTS The complications included in nodule formation (54.2%), pain (33.9%), PAHG migration (7.6%) and acute mastitis in lactation (4.3%). Satisfactory clinical treatment results have been obtained after suitable treatments. CONCLUSIONS The complications induced by PAHG injection for augmentation mammoplasty have increased following its widely use, the re-evaluation for this technique should be made, and more effective treatment should be considered.

Abstract
Resin-based restorative materials are considered safe for the vast majority of dental patients. Although constituent chemicals such as monomers, accelerators and initiators can potentially leach out of cured resin-based materials after placement, adverse reactions to these chemicals are rare and reaction symptoms commonly subside after removal of the materials. Dentists should be aware of the rare possibility that patients could have adverse reactions to constituents of resin-based materials and be vigilant in observing any adverse reactions after restoration placement. Dentists should also be cognisant of patient complaints about adverse reactions that may result from components of resin-based materials. To minimise monomer leaching and any potential risk of dermatological reactions, resin-based materials should be adequately cured. Dental health care workers should avoid direct skin contact with uncured resin-based materials. Latex and vinyl gloves do not provide adequate barrier protection to the monomers in resin-based materials.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this clinical 2-year follow-up study was to compare the postoperative sensitivity of abutment teeth restored with full coverage restorations retained with either conventional glass-ionomer cement or a new adhesive resin cement containing 4-methacrylolyloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty patients received 120 full-coverage restorations on vital abutment teeth, cemented with either a glass-ionomer cement (Ketac-Cem) or a new adhesive resin cement (Chemiace II). A randomized split-mouth design and a patient double-blind data acquisition protocol were used. The teeth were examined before cementation, after 1 week, and after 6, 12, and 24 months. RESULTS With regard to postcementation sensitivity, a low incidence was observed for both groups. With the adhesive resin cement, little postoperative hypersensitivity was observed after 1 week (13.3%), 6 months (5.9%), 12 months (2.1%), and 24 months (none); results were similar with the conventional glass-ionomer cement Ketac-Cem after 1 week (5.9%), 6 months (5.9%), 12 months (6.4%), and 24 months (none). After 6 months, 2 teeth of the Chemiace II group showed no sensitivity. Endodontic treatment was carried out for these 2 abutment teeth. After 24 months, no cases of postoperative hypersensitivity were recorded for either group. CONCLUSION In this study, the incidence of postoperative hypersensitivity after cementation of full-crown restorations with a conventional glass-ionomer cement and a new adhesive resin cement was similar.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This in-vitro study investigated the effects of conventional etching with a 35% phosphoric etching gel and priming/bonding with Transbond XT primer/adhesive (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif), conditioning with 10% polyacrylic acid and bonding with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji ORTHO LC, GC Corporation, Tokyo Japan) or using a self-etching bonding system (Transbond Plus) and bonding with Transbond XT adhesive on the surface morphology of the enamel. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo, in Norway, 2004. METHODS The enamel surfaces of extracted premolars where conditioned with 1 of the 3 systems and evaluated with environmental scanning electron microscope. Brackets were then bonded with 1 of 3 bonding agents and examined with a conventional scanning electron microscope. RESULTS The bonding systems induced different effects on the enamel structure. Phosphoric acid etching produced a rough, etched surface with the typical honeycomb pattern. Bonding brackets to such a surface resulted in thick resin tags relatively deep into the enamel. Less pronounced etching of the surface enamel was obtained by the self-etching primer system, and bonding resulted in smaller and fewer resin tags. The resin-modified glass ionomer bonded after conditioning the enamel with polyacrylic acid showed no resin tags. CONCLUSIONS Bonding systems with self-etching primers or conditioners with polyacrylic acid might offer potential benefits compared with conventional acid etching and priming because of fewer irreversible changes to the enamel surface.

Abstract
Injectable filler materials can be valuable to aesthetic surgeons. To date, hardly any short-term and no long-term complications of polyalkylimide injections (Bio-Alcamid) have been reported. We present and discuss the history of 18 patients who had such complications. The patients were between 31 and 55 years of age. The time between injection and the onset of complications of polyalkylimide ranged from 1 month to 3 years. Additional invasive therapy at, or near, the site of injections triggered the onset of infection in 10 patients. By use of T2-weighted MRI with fat suppressing spectro-presaturation inversion recovery (SPIR) the filler material can be visualised. Once infection or migration of the permanent filler occurs, the therapeutic options are limited to surgical removal by a direct approach. Polyalkylimide should be handled under strict antiseptic circumstances. This does not only apply at the time of initial injections, but even more during any subsequent invasive treatment such as evacuation of surplus deposits or additional surgical procedures at, or near, the site of injection.

Abstract
An amphiphilic AB block copolymer composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) as a hydrophilic segment and poly(10-undecenoic acid) as a hydrophobic segment was synthesized. Cytotoxicity study of this copolymer exhibited no significant cytotoxicity. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the copolymer was 30.8 degrees C, as determined by the turbidity method. The block copolymer forms micelles in an aqueous medium at the temperature lower than the LCST. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that these micelles were regularly spherical in shape. The micelle size determined by size analysis was around 160 nm. The anti-inflammation drug prednisone acetate was incorporated into the micelles and the release profiles of prednisone acetate showed a dramatic thermoresponsive switching behavior and a unique pH responsive behavior. Moreover, the pH responsive behavior was in relation to the thermoresponsive behavior. That is, the micelles were not pH sensitive at the temperature below the LCST, but the aggregates were pH sensitive at the temperature above the LCST. Based on these results, the thermo- and pH responsive micelles have great potential to be a novel carrier for drug delivery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To search for the perfect therapy for the complications of breast augmentation by injecting polyacrylamide hydrogel. METHODS 15 patients whose complications were severe after hydrogel injection were included in this study. Open suction and irrigation of cavity were performed in all patients and all received immediately dual-plane augmentation mammaplasty with silicon gel prostheses. RESULTS 12 patient were followed up for 3 months to 1 year (mean 6.8 months) and no malposition or deformation occurred. 10 patients (20 breasts) had satisfactory results. The edges of the implant shell could be felt in 2 patients (3 breasts). 1 patient (1 breast) with breast firmness ranked Baker II . CONCLUSIONS The dual-plane breast augmentation is a valuable technique to treat the complications of polyacrylamide hydrogel injection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyacrylamide (Aquamid) is a nonabsorbable soft-tissue filler. It consists of a polyacrylamide hydrogel. Safety and aesthetic results after injection of polyacrylamide hydrogel for facial soft-tissue enhancement were analyzed in a clinical trial. METHODS In a prospective multicenter study, 251 patients were enrolled for injection of polyacrylamide hydrogel (Aquamid). The results of the first year follow-up have been described previously. One hundred one of 251 initially enrolled patients could be recruited for follow-up 24 months after the first injection. Standardized photographs were taken, and blood and urine samples were collected before treatment and during follow-up visits. Common sites of injection were nasolabial folds, lips, glabella folds, and other sites. The amount of injected gel ranged from 0.2 to 12 ml. RESULTS A course of 24 months was followed in 101 patients. Results were judged to be good or very good by the investigators in 93 patients. Eighty-six patients judged the aesthetic outcome as satisfactory or very satisfactory. No severe side effects were observed during the 2-year follow-up period. Transient local reactions that resolved spontaneously were detected in several patients. In one case, burning sensations after lip augmentation were reported lasting up to the 24-month follow-up visit. CONCLUSIONS Polyacrylamide hydrogel (Aquamid) yielded satisfying aesthetic results in more than 90 percent of patients. There was no difference in efficacy between 12 and 24 months' follow-up. No adverse soft-tissue reaction was observed. The study group may be biased, as patients with bad results may have refrained from further follow-up. Long-term follow-up is necessary.

Abstract
The demand for safe, effective, long-lasting, biocompatible dermal filler materials is increasing. Many products that include synthetic polymers and autologous tissue have emerged that attempt to meet these criteria. An overview of injectable permanent fillers, including ArteFill, Aquamid, and silicone, and semipermanent fillers, including Radiesse, Sculptra, and autologous fat, is presented. A discussion of their composition, histologic characteristics, antigenicity, U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval status, indications for use, efficacy, injection technique, and adverse effects is provided.

Abstract
Bio-alcamid (Polymekon) is a gelatinous endoprothesis constituted of poly-alkyl-imide and water that is used for correction of aesthetic alterations. It presents very good tolerance with few adverse effects. We present a case of localized infection in one of the sites of injection, three months after the implant was placed in the nasolabial furrows and lips. It would be the first case of a delayed infection following injection of this material, although there are few references in this field.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the resin monomer bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate (BISGMA) on adult male mouse fertility. Male Swiss mice were administered various concentrations of BISGMA (0, 25, and 100 microg/kg) for a period of 28 days, and the effects on fertility was assessed by breeding these males with untreated female mice after the exposure periods. The results showed that fertility was significantly reduced when male mice were exposed to BISGMA, in comparison with their control counterparts. In females mated with males exposed to BISGMA, there was a significant reduction in the pregnancy rates as well as the number of viable fetuses. The number of resorptions out of the total number of implantations was significantly increased in females mated with males that had been exposed to BISGMA. Furthermore, the number of females with resorptions was also significantly increased. Significant reductions in bodyweight and weights of the testis and preputial glands were also observed. The weights of the seminal vesicles were significantly increased in males exposed to BISGMA in comparison with their control counterparts. There were significant reductions in testicular sperm counts, epididymal sperm counts and in the efficiency of sperm production. In conclusion, exposure of male mice to BISGMA results in an impairment of the reproductive system and fertility.

Abstract
Vascular embolization is a well-established practice for the treatment of tumors and vascular lesions. Rounded beads (microspheres) of various materials (collagen, dextran and trisacryl-polymer-gelatin) were developed to solve problems encountered with earlier versions of embolic material. We performed histochemistry, Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis on two uterine and one hepatic specimen with unidentified intravascular foreign material, and examined a reference embolization product for comparison. The hematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sections showed multiple foci with unidentified intravascular foreign material and fibrous obliteration of vessel lumens. Only one case had a clinical history of previous embolization but without specifying the material used. One case was submitted for identification of a 'parasite'. The material stained positively with Sirius red and mucicarmine, variably with Masson's trichrome stain and Movat pentachrome, and did not stain centrally with periodic acid Schiff with diastase. Infrared spectrophotometric analysis of the material from all three cases demonstrated the spectrum of acrylic polyamide plastic. A control sample of EmboGold exhibited infrared microspectroscopic spectra similar to the three tissue specimens. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated some differences in elemental composition between the tissue sections and the selected reference material. To our knowledge, this is the first report of infrared spectrophotometric analysis with scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis of an acrylic polyamide plastic embolization product both in vitro and in human histologic tissue sections. In cases lacking appropriate clinical information, identification by these methods and/or a panel of special stains may assist pathologists unfamiliar with this material's light microscopic appearance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To inquire into the reason why the postoperative complications of augmentation mammaplasty by injecting polyacrylamide hydrogel took place and to find the best method to deal with the complications. METHODS 12 patients who accepted polyacrylamide hydrogel injection for augmentation mammaplasty were included in this study. Operations were performed to remove the polyacrylamide hydrogel. RESULTS All patients didn't argue with the result, but the outside shape of mamma was not good post-operation. CONCLUSIONS So-called standard injection method can't avoid the postoperative complications. The considerable therapy for the complications of polyacrylamide hydrogel was removing it by operation.

Calcium polycarbophil shortened total colonic transit time (P < 0.05), increased bowel frequency and improved defecation difficulty in four patients with non-traumatic spinal cord disorders. Polycarbophil may be useful for the treatment of constipation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Piperacillin-tazobactam is commonly used to treat infections in ICU patients. Controversial data have been published about the sieving/saturation coefficient (Sc/Sa) of piperacillin during continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT). The objective was to evaluate the Sc/Sa of piperacillin-tazobactam during continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) and continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD) using AN69 and polysulfone. METHODS Ringer lactate, BSA-containing Ringer lactate and plasma were circulated at 150 ml/min. The ultrafiltrate/dialysis flow was kept at 1,500 ml/min. A bolus was injected and samples were taken. Drugs were measured using HPLC. Sc/Sa was calculated according to standard formula. RESULTS Free passage of drugs through the membranes was reported with protein free solutions. In the presence of proteins the Sc/Sa lowered and correlated to protein free fraction. Polysulfone had a significantly higher permeability than AN69 during CVVH. CONCLUSION Drug binding to albumin contributes to the decrease of the Sc/Sa of piperacillin but it does not completely justify the in vivo value obtained by some authors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the use of a light curing unit (LCU) with high light power would result in a higher temperature and therefore a statistically significant lower number of living human gingiva fibroblasts within a pulp chamber model than the use of a light emitting diode (LED) LCU. MATERIALS AND METHODS The composites Admira, Grandio, Filtek Supreme and Filtek Z250 were polymerized with the LCUs Swiss Master Light, Optilux 501 and an LED LCU prototype in a mould on top of a pulp chamber model. The temperature was recorded within the pulp chamber with a thermocouple. The cytotoxicity of the polymerized samples was tested by using the MTT test. RESULTS In general there was no considerable difference in the temperature increase within the pulp chamber model for the different LCUs and composites. There was no statistically significant difference in the cell number (p=0.3767) when the different LCUs were used. CONCLUSIONS Using a high power halogen LCU for a short time or a standard halogen or LED LCU for a longer time did not result in a considerable difference in the temperature increase or the number of living cells within a pulp chamber model. This study indicates not only that the temperature may have an effect on the living cells, but also that cells may be negatively affected by the unpolymerized composite or light of the LCUs.

Abstract
Aquamid represents a new generation of soft-tissue fillers for aesthetic facial correction and reconstruction due to its reduced quantity of particles (2.5% of polyacrylamide) and high concentration of water (97.5%). It is a biocompatible, atoxic, homogeneous, and stable product. Additionally, it has good viscosity and elasticity, and it is very simple to use. Although reported in less than 1% of the cases, adverse effects such as pain, swelling, and erythema may occur, which may be the result of inappropriate injection procedure. This article reports the first case of an intraoral foreign body reaction resulting from Aquamid application in the nasolabial fold. Possible causes for this reaction, the chemical composition of the product, and the histopathologic aspects are discussed.
