Bone scintigraphy of benign jaw lesions

Bone scintigraphy has been performed two or more times within a year on 12 patients: four with cherubism, four with fibrous dysplasia, and four with osteomyelitis of the mandible. In cherubism abnormal scintigrams were found only in the regressive period with new bone formation, while in fibrous dysplasia, abnormal scintigrams were found in all cases, even in patients where the disease was expected to be stationary. In osteomyelitis the changes in the scintigrams corresponded to clinical and radiological changes. Bone scintigraphy may be used as a differential diagnostic aid in doubtful cases of cherubism and fibrous dysplasia, or to reveal any lesions of other bones. The method cannot be used for differentiating between fibrous dysplasia and osteomyelitis, but bone scintigraphy may be useful in the early diagnosis or the late control of osteomyelitis in the jaws.

Cherubism--an initial unilateral presentation

An unusual presentation of cherubism is reported owing to the initial unilateral nature and late onset of occurrence. A classification for cherubism is proposed and the difficulty in diagnosis of unilateral cases is discussed.

Cherubism: a report on three cases

Three cases of cherubism not previously recorded in the literature are described. They are three members of a Greek Cypriot family; the mother aged 49 years had residual mandibular deformity; the first daughter aged 17 years had facial swelling and anterior rib lesions; the second daughter aged 14 years presented with a unilateral giant-cell granuloma in the mandible.

[Multiple cysts of the jaws: basocellular nevomatosis]

The authors presents two cases of basocellular nevomatosis with multiple maxillary cysts. He thought it important to point out the presence of a cyst in the left styloid apophysis, as up to now, epidermoid cysts have never been observed in other facial bones apart from the maxillae in BCN. In conclusion, the author presents three casses, which although showing multiple cysts or pseudocysts of the maxillae, do not belong to the BCN syndrome.
