Abstract
The study enrolled 177 women with gynecological cancer and 132 with gynecological disease. Hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), red blood cells (RBC), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were analyzed. The gynecological patients with anemia showed a correlation between Hb and MCH (p < 0,05), which is indicative of iron deficiency. In the gynecological cancer patients, the correlation between Hb and MCH was significant (p < 0,01), that between Hb and RBC was strong (p < 0,001), suggesting the reductions in both erythropoiesis and Hb synthesis in the erythrokaryocytes. In these patients, anemia results from chronic diseases. The gynecological cancer patients were found to have higher ESR and lower Hb, RBC, and MCH than the gynecological patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We undertook this study to determine risk factors for histological alterations of the female genital tract in an open population who attend a first-level care medical facility. METHODS We conducted a case/control cohort study that included patients from outpatient consultation who responded to a cervical cancer control and prevention program. We studied 1933 patients; 88 patients (cases) had cellular alterations and were matched with 88 patients without alterations (controls). Statistical analysis was carried out with one-way ANOVA for comparison between groups and association of variables with relative risk for 95% confidence interval; p <0.05. RESULTS Mean age of the case group was 36.1 +/- 1.6 years and the control group had a mean age of 35.8 +/- 2.1 years. Diagnoses obtained in the case group showed a greater frequency of ectropion, human papilloma virus infection and CIN1. Risks factors analyzed in these patients showed statistical differences in number of gestations >2 (RR = 2.33) and the early initiation of sexual activity (<19 years) (RR = 1.14) for experiencing histological problems of the female genital tract. CONCLUSIONS Prevention of cervical cancer can be accomplished through timely and opportune detection in order to avoid the disease or to decrease risk factors by using condoms, delaying initiation of sexual activity and limiting the number of sexual partners. These are all strategies that the general population should be aware of.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the presence of anogenital warts (AGW) in children and the sexual abuse as mode of transmission. Our series includes 8 patients with AGW who were treated in our hospital during the year 2007. A complete physical examination was carried out, including colposcopy or anoscopy, and samples were taken for histopathological examination and human papiloma virus (HPV) subtyping. We considered perinatal transmission as a possible route in two cases. Although sexual abuse was definitively confirmed in only one case, we observed some findings in four cases that led us to consider the possibility of sexual abuse. We did not consider the possibility of heteroinoculation or autoinoculation from common warts in any case. Our results have demonstrated the difficulty in assessing with certainty the source of HPV contamination in children with AGW.

Abstract
The recombined adenovirus DNA was transfected into 293 cells for packing and amplification of replication-deficient Ad-CMV-E6/E7, Ad-K14 -E6/E7 virus was purified by CsCl density gradient centrifugation , recombined adenovirus Ad-CMV-E6/E7, Ad-K14 -E6/E7 were used as experimental group, while pAd-CMV and pAdtrack-K14 were used as control group. Four of them were injected through one main vein of nude mice tail respectively. These mice were then treated with 0.05 mg 17beta-estradiol over 12 weeks. Mice were anaesthesiaed with 2.5% Avertint and the vagina, mammary gland, ovaries and uterus were dissected and fixed in 3.75% paraformaldehyde overnight at 4 degrees C. Paraffin-embedded sections, HE staining and identification of P53 and Bcl-2 protein via immunohistochemistry were performed. The expression of E6/E7 was verified by RT-PCR in different tissue of nude mice. HE staining showed evident hyperplasy in cervix-uterus transformation zone of experimental group 2. The expression of mutant P53 and Bcl-2 were higher than control group via immunohistochemical S-P method in uterus stroma-cell. Western blotting also showed that E6 protein was expressed. The expression of E6/E7 was higher than control group by human cytokeratin promoter 14 and hyperlasy changes were detected in epithelial tissue of cervix-uterus transformation zone.

Abstract
PURPOSE In this study we identified prognostic factors for survival and validated the accuracy of the Fournier's gangrene severity index in patients with Fournier's gangrene. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients diagnosed with Fournier's gangrene between 1996 and 2006. Fournier's gangrene severity index scores were assessed using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Using an outcome variable of inpatient mortality, univariate analyses were performed using the Mann-Whitney U, chi-square and Fisher exact tests. RESULTS A total of 68 patients (79.4% male, mean age 55.8 +/- 15.2 years) diagnosed with Fournier's gangrene met the criteria for review. The inpatient mortality rate was 10% (7 patients). The mean Fournier's gangrene severity index score for survivors was 5.4 +/- 3.5 vs 10.9 +/- 4.7 for nonsurvivors (p = 0.006). Isolated Fournier's gangrene severity index and individual laboratory parameters associated with mortality included heart rate (p = 0.05), respiratory rate (p = 0.02), serum creatinine (p = 0.03), serum bicarbonate (p = 0.001), serum lactate (p = 0.001) and serum calcium (p = 0.03). Although mean total body surface area was only suggestive of an association (p = 0.169), abdominal wall (p = 0.004) or lower extremity (p = 0.005) involvement was associated with increased mortality. Using a Fournier's gangrene severity index score threshold of 9 (sensitivity 71.4%, specificity 90%) there was a 96% survival rate in patients with a Fournier's gangrene severity index of less than 9 and a 46% mortality rate in those with a Fournier's gangrene severity index of 9 or greater (p = 0.001, OR 22, 95% CI 3.5-139.7). CONCLUSIONS The Fournier's gangrene severity index remains an objective and simple method to quantify the extent of metabolic aberration at presentation in patients with Fournier's gangrene. A Fournier's gangrene severity index threshold value of 9 is sensitive and specific for predicting mortality in this patient population.

Abstract
Schistosoma haematobium infection may cause genital mucosal pathology in women with and without urinary schistosomiasis. This report seeks to explore the long-term effect of anti-schistosomal treatment on the clinical manifestations of S. haematobium infection in the lower genital tract. Prior treatment was reported by 248 (47%) of 527 women. Treatment received before the age of 20 years was significantly associated with the absence of sandy patches and contact bleeding, and this association was independent of current waterbody contact. Treatment in the past five years did not influence the prevalence of gynecologic schistosoma-induced lesions. The study indicates that early treatment may be more efficient for gynecologic morbidity control. Findings warrant an exploration into several chemotherapeutic agents administered at an early age, as well as in adults.

Abstract
The human endometrium is a dynamic remodeling tissue undergoing more than 400 cycles of regeneration, differentiation and shedding during a woman's reproductive years. The co-ordinated and sequential actions of estrogen and progesterone direct these major remodeling events preparing a receptive endometrium for blastocyst implantation on a monthly basis. Adult stem/progenitor cells are likely responsible for endometrial regeneration. Functional approaches have been used to identify candidate endometrial stem/progenitor cells, as there are no specific stem cell markers. Rare populations of human endometrial epithelial and stromal colony-forming cells/units (CFU) and side population (SP) cells have been identified. Several growth factors are required for CFU activity: epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor alpha (TGFalpha) and platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) for both epithelial and stromal CFU, and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) for stromal, but not epithelial CFU. A sub-population of human endometrial stromal cells with mesenchymal stem cell properties of CFU activity and multilineage (fat, muscle, cartilage and bone) differentiation have been isolated by their co-expression of CD146 and PDGF-receptor beta. Candidate epithelial and stromal stem/progenitor cells have been identified in mouse endometrium as rare label retaining cells (LRCs) in the luminal epithelium and as perivascular cells at the endometrial-myometrial junction, respectively. While epithelial and most stromal LRC do not express estrogen receptor alpha (Esr1), they rapidly proliferate on estrogen stimulation, most likely mediated by neighbouring Esr1-expressing niche cells. It is likely that these newly identified endometrial stem/progenitor cells may play key roles in the development of gynecological diseases associated with abnormal endometrial proliferation such as endometriosis and endometrial cancer.

Abstract
Female genital ulcer is a disease that affects a large number of women, and its etiologic diagnosis can be difficult. The disease may increase the risk of acquiring HIV. Genital ulcer may be present in sexually transmitted diseases (STD)--syphilis, chancroid, genital herpes, donovanosis, lymphogranuloma venereum; and other non-STD disorders (NSTD)--Behçet's syndrome, pemphigus, Crohn's disease, erosive lichen planus and others. This study evaluated the clinical-histopathologic-microbiologic characteristics of female genital ulcers. A cross-sectional descriptive prospective study was conducted during a six-month period to investigate the first 53 women without a definitive diagnosis, seeking medical care for genital ulcers at a genital infections outpatient facility in a university hospital. A detailed and specific history was taken, followed by a dermatologic and gynecologic examination. In addition to collecting material from the lesions for microbiologic study, a biopsy of the ulcer was performed for histopathologic investigation. The average age of the patients was 32.7 years, 56.6% had junior high school education and higher education. The most frequent etiology was herpetic lesion, followed by auto-immune ulcers. At the time of their first consultation, around 60% of the women were using inadequate medication that was inconsistent with the final diagnosis. Histologic diagnosis was conclusive in only 26.4% of the patients (14/53). Cure was obtained in 99% of the cases after proper therapy. The female genital ulcers studied were equally distributed between sexually transmitted and non-sexually transmitted causes. Herpes was the most frequent type of genital ulcer, affecting women indiscriminately, mostly between the ages of 20 and 40 years. The etiologic diagnosis of herpetic ulcers is difficult to make even when various diagnostic methods are applied. It is imperative that NSTD should be included in the differential diagnoses of female genital ulcers. The histopathologic exam is not a diagnostic tool in the majority of cases and should not be considered the gold standard test, being of little value in cases of NSTD and STD ulcers.

Abstract
Optical coherence tomography is one of the most important technological progress of the last ten years in the field of medical imaging. It is similar to ultrasound imaging except that it uses properties of light instead of ultrasound. Optical coherence tomography provides images of tissue structure, and at a cellular level, in situ, in real time, with much better spatial resolution than ultrasound and without removal of tissue (optical biopsy). Using optical coherence tomography in combination with catheters or endoscopes may enable the imaging of internal organs as the cervix, the uterine tissue and the ovary. The use of optical coherence tomography in the gynecological field is still experimental and is mainly about the in vitro and in vivo diagnosis of cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, ovary cancer, endometrial cancer and endometriosis. We aim to present the principles of optical coherence tomography and to expose the main ways of research and the future and potential clinical applications of this technique in gynecology.

Abstract
Suppression of cell-mediated immunity has been proposed as a mechanism that promotes maternal tolerance of the fetus but also contributes to increased occurrence and severity of certain infections during pregnancy. Despite decades of research examining the effect of pregnancy on Ag-specific T cell responses, many questions remain. In particular, quantitative examination of memory CD8 T cell generation following infection during pregnancy remains largely unknown. To examine this issue, we evaluated the generation of protective immunity following infection during pregnancy with a nonpersistent strain of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) in mice. The CD8 T cell response to LCMV occurred normally in pregnant mice compared with the nonpregnant cohort with rapid viral clearance in all tissues tested except for the placenta. Despite significant infiltration of CD8 T cells to the maternal-fetal interface, virus persisted in the placenta until delivery. Live pups were not infected and generated normal primary immune responses when challenged as adults. Memory CD8 T cell development in mice that were pregnant during primary infection was normal with regards to the proliferative capacity, number of Ag-specific cells, cytokine production upon re-stimulation, and the ability to protect from re-infection. These data suggest that virus-specific adaptive memory is normally generated in mice during pregnancy.

Abstract
Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world. In women, genital infection can cause endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease with the severe sequelae of ectopic pregnancy or infertility. Chlamydia sp. do not damage tissues directly, but induce an injurious host inflammatory response at the infected site. In the murine model of genital disease with Chlamydia muridarum, TLR2 plays a role in both early production of inflammatory mediators and development of chronic oviduct pathology. We report the results of studies with plasmid-cured C. muridarum mutants that retain the ability to infect the murine genital tract, but fail to cause disease in the oviduct. These mutants do not stimulate TLR2-dependent cytokine production in mice, nor in innate immune cells or epithelial cells in vitro. They induce an effective Th1 immune response, with no evidence for Th1-immune-mediated collateral tissue damage. Furthermore, mice previously infected with the plasmid-deficient strains are protected against oviduct disease upon challenge with virulent C. muridarum. If plasmid-cured derivatives of human C. trachomatis biovars exhibit similar phenotypic characteristics, they have the potential to serve as vaccines to prevent human disease.

Abstract
Ligation of the purinergic receptor, P2X7R, with its agonist ATP has been previously shown to inhibit intracellular infection by chlamydiae and mycobacteria in macrophages. The effect of P2X7R on chlamydial infection had never been investigated in the preferred target cells of chlamydiae, cervical epithelial cells, nor in vaginally infected mice. In this study, we show that treatment of epithelial cells with P2X7R agonists inhibits partially Chlamydia infection in epithelial cells. Chelation of ATP with magnesium or pretreatment with a P2X7R antagonist blocks the inhibitory effects of ATP. Similarly to previous results obtained with macrophages, ATP-mediated inhibition of infection in epithelial cells requires activation of host-cell phospholipase D. Vaginal infection was also more efficient in P2X7R-deficient mice, which also displayed a higher level of acute inflammation in the endocervix, oviduct, and mesosalpingeal tissues than in infected wild-type mice. However, secretion of IL-1beta, which requires P2X7R ligation during infection by other pathogens, was decreased mildly and only at short times of infection. Taken together, these results suggest that P2X7R affects Chlamydia infection by directly inhibiting infection in epithelial cells, rather than through the ability of P2X7R to modulate IL-1beta secretion.

Abstract
Recent developments in MR techniques have magnified the roles and potential of MRI in the female pelvis. This article reviews the techniques and clinical applications of functional MRI (fMRI) of the female pelvis, including cine MRI, diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI), and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI. Cine MRI is a useful tool for evaluating uterine contractility, including sustained contraction and peristalsis, in a variety of conditions and gynecologic disorders, and for evaluating pelvic-floor weakness. DWI can demonstrate abnormal signals in pathologic foci based on differences in molecular diffusion. It also enables the quantitative evaluation of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), which may be useful for distinguishing malignant from benign tissues and monitoring therapeutic outcome. DCE-MRI has the potential to improve tumor detection and local staging, and can also provide quantitative information about perfusion of the tumor, which may be useful for both monitoring therapeutic effects and predicting therapeutic outcome. Understanding the roles played by functional MR techniques in the female pelvic region is beneficial not only for determining clinical applications, but also for developing further investigations with MRI.

Abstract
Ligneous inflammation is a rare disease characterized by progressive growth of ligneous plaques on mucosal surfaces. Involvement of the female genital tract is an unusual condition. We present a patient with multifocal ligneous inflammation involving her genital tract, oral mucosa and conjunctiva. Plasminogen functional activity was 18% of normal (reference: 55-145%). Molecular analysis exhibited that her genetic status is homozygous for a combination of three polymorphisms. But no true mutation could be found in all 19 exons of the plasminogen gene. We did not observe any clinical changes, although plasminogen activity has improved in the course of 5 months of oral contraceptive therapy Most gynecologists are unfamiliar with this diagnosis and pathologists with wide experience in gynecology are unaware of this disease. However, the histology of lesions is characteristic and a diagnosis can be made quite easily once it has been considered.

Abstract
In this retrospective study on banked tissue, we found that alpha-actinin and talin were completely de-expressed in both endometriosis and endometrioid carcinoma tissue. Some patchy, depolarized labeling for ezrin was noted in the endometrioid carcinoma but not in endometriosis. The loss of these proteins in both endometriosis and endometrioid carcinoma tissue indicates a significant change in the integrity of these tissues compared with normal and the possibility that individual cells may break away from the parent histology due to loss of cell adhesion. It also indicates a similarity between endometrioid cancer and endometriosis with respect to epithelial cell function and adhesion.

Abstract
Physical and reproductive conditions of cull sows (3158) from two U.S. Midwestern harvest plants were assessed. Body condition, feet, shoulders, teeth, lungs, and reproductive tracts were visually evaluated for gross lesions on harvested sows. PROC FREQ (SAS, Cary, NC) was used to calculate the frequency of each binary trait event. Pearson chi-square tests were used to test the alternative hypothesis that a linear association existed between binary traits and body condition score (BCS). The most common foot lesions observed were rear (n=2064, 67.5%) and front (n=1024, 32.9%) heel lesions. Cracked hooves were found on the front feet of 703 (22.6%) and rear feet of 552 (18.1%) sows. Rear digital overgrowth was observed in 644 (21.1%) sows. The most common reproductive gross lesion observed among harvested cull sows was acyclic ovaries (n=277, 9.0%). Presence of acyclic ovaries increased (p<0.01) as BCS decreased. Cystic ovaries were found in 192 (6.3%) sows, which increased (p<0.01) as BCS increased. Pneumonia was observed in 298 (9.7%) sows, and increased in frequency as BCS decreased (p<0.01). The most frequently observed shoulder lesion among harvested cull sows was shoulder abrasions (n=394, 12.5%). The presence of shoulder abrasions increased (p<0.01) as BCS decreased. The prevalence of reproductive lesions detected in the present study was less than the reported percentage of sows culled for reproductive failure from previous studies based on record keeping summaries.

Abstract
We studied the trend in the number of forensic-medical examinations in trials against obstetricians and gynecologists conducted in Primorsky Region in 1997-2005. Most typical defects in obstetric-gynecological care are characterized. These cases are analysed in terms of forensic-medical practice. Detection and forensic-medical analysis of the above defects contribute to optimization of the diagnosis and treatment both in obstetric-gynecological practice and in wide medical practice.

Abstract
Because of their close phylogenic relationship with humans, the use of non-human primates (NHP) as experimental subjects has a long history in biomedical research. Although research topics have shifted focus and species used have changed, NHP remain vital as models in basic and applied research. While there is a wealth of information available on the spontaneous lesions of NHP, most of this information is fragmented, dated, or narrow in focus, often limited to single case reports. This review attempts to integrate this information to illustrate and enumerate the spectrum of spontaneous pathology of the reproductive tract and mammary gland of NHP. Although not the focus of this review, steroid-related changes are inextricably linked to these tissues, and brief consideration is given to this subject as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vulvar ulcerations are an entity that practicing gynecologists frequently encounter in daily practice. CASE A 21-year-old nulliparous college student presented with a 3-day history of itching to the genital area with associated tenderness and sore bumps. She was initially treated for vulvovaginal candidiasis and instructed to return several days later for follow-up. Repeat examination revealed multiple coalescent and necrotic-appearing ulcerations confined to the labia minora, vagina, and posterior fourchette. All of the lesions eventually resolved. CONCLUSION This case reminds us to broaden our differential diagnosis when considering causes of genital tract ulcerations in reproductive-aged females.

Abstract
Müllerianosis of the urinary tract is a very rare and morphologically complex tumor-like lesion. It is composed of several types of müllerian-type lesions, including endometriosis, endocervicosis, and endosalpingiosis. We present a case of ureteral müllerianosis in woman with a history of a cesarean section about 20 years previously but with silent clinical symptoms. She was treated with segmental ureteral resection, followed by ureteroureteral anastomosis. The pathogenesis and treatment of this lesion are discussed.
