Vascular compression syndrome of the vestibular nerve: a critical analysis

The rationale, indications, and surgical results of microvascular decompression for the treatment of vertigo are reviewed, and a critical analysis is made. The syndrome of disabling positional vertigo is discussed. It is concluded that (1) vascular compressive vestibular neuropathy may exist, (2) the current published diagnostic criteria for this disorder are insufficient to firmly establish the diagnosis, and (3) further work delineating this syndrome should be undertaken.

Facial neuralgias: a clinical review of 34 cases

This paper reviewed the clinical features of the facial neuralgias, and described the demographic data for 24 cases of atypical facial neuralgia, seven cases of trigeminal neuralgia, two cases of cluster headache and one of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, which were all referred for investigation and treatment over a three-month period to a teaching hospital dental department.

Pain laterality in relation to site of pain and diagnosis

A retrospective study of pain laterality was performed on a sample of 1006 patients suffering from chronic pain attending the Centre for Pain Relief, Walton Hospital, Liverpool, U.K. 769 patients reported unilateral pain. There was no significant difference in the numbers presenting with right-sided and left-sided pain. When the data for different sites of pain were analysed separately a similar picture emerged. No statistically significant differences in the frequency of left- and right-sided pain were found at any site. Similarly, when the data for different diagnoses were examined, there were no significant differences in the laterality of the pain found in any diagnostic category. This study fails to support the general hypothesis that pain, when lateralised, occurs more frequently on the left.
