Treatment of nitrate intoxication in a cow

Nitrate poisoning was induced in a cow by giving it 200 g potassium nitrate through a rumen fistula for three to four days in succession. The effect of treatment with methylene blue, ascorbic acid and menadione, administered intravenously in different dosages was assessed by measuring methaemoglobin as a percentage of total haemoglobin and comparing the results with those from the untreated cow. The results obtained indicate that ascorbic acid and menadione are unsuitable for treatment of methaemoglobinaemia in nitrate poisoned cattle, but treatment with methylene blue at 1 mg/kg body weight appears to be adequate.

A single subcutaneous injection of vitamin K3 into male rats activates NADP H-ferritochromo-c-oxidoreductase in membranes of hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum. As the vitamin dose is raised up to 50 mg/kg, the function of NADP . H-nitrotetrasolium-reductases also increases. Administration of the vitamin in a dose of 70 mg/kg per os for 10 days brings about activation of NADP . H- and NADP . H-nitrotetrasolium-reductases along with an appreciable increase in the rate of N-demethylation of amidopyrine and p-hydroxylation of aniline.

[Effect of protein synthesis inhibitors on the vicasol-induced change in the content of the thermostable antifactor Xa in the blood serum]

Content of a thermostable inhibitor of thrombinogenesis (antifactor Xa) was decreased in blood serum after administration of pellentan. Subsequent treatment with vicasol normalized at the accelerated rate the antifactor Xa content in blood serum. Administration of the inhibitors of protein synthesis (vincrystine, actinomycin D, toyomycin, tetracycline--inhibitors of RNA polymerase, elongation, posttranscriptional conversions of mRNA and of translation processes, respectively (did not alter distinctly the vicasol effect--decrease in antifactor Xa content of blood serum. Vitamin K appears to participate in formation of the active molecule of the inhibitor of thrombinogenesis at the postribosomal step as shown in study of several other blood plasma procoagulants.
