Abstract
Abstract
A 45 mm diameter single-screw “transparent” extruder was employed for an investigation on the dynamic performance of screws of different configurations. The extruder had eight glass windows installed along the entire metal barrel which enabled visual observation to be easily made. It was demonstrated, with this extruder, that pressure profile appeared to be an important factor for screw performance such as throughput rate, residence time, mixing characteristics, break-up of solid-bed, etc. The full-flight screw had the lowest pressure profile among all the screws tested, and its performance was found to be generally inferior to that of the mixing screws. The Darnell and Mol solid plug flow theory was shown to be applicable only to the mixing screws for the solid flow behaviour in the entire solid conveying section. The secondary flight of the barrier screw was found to effectively suppress solid bed break-up, but only at low screw speed. A screw with a Maddock mixing device was found to have the highest throughput rate. Other findings were believed to be of practical significance in the screw design.

Abstract
The content and composition of fucoidans extracted from Undaria pinnatifida from mussel farms at the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand were investigated using CaCl2 extraction. Crude fucoidan (F0) was subsequently extracted on a monthly basis from U. pinnatifida harvested from July to October 2011 from mussel farms in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Fucoidan yield varied between the frond and sporophyll parts of the algae, with the sporophyll consistently the highest content. The yield from the sporophyll increased significantly from July (25.4-26.3%) to September (57.3-69.9%). Sulphate content in the extracted fucoidan increased more than twice within the same period, while fucose content remained constant. F0 was further purified by ion-exchange chromatography to yield three fractions, F1, F2 and F3. All three fucoidan fractions contained fucose as the primary sugar component followed by galactose, with xylose, glucose and mannose as minor constituents. All fractions exhibited strong antioxidant activities using the DPPH scavenging and CUPRAC assays. This study showed that sporophyll maturation of U. pinnatifida in New Zealand influenced fucoidan content and composition. Sporophyll fucoidan could potentially be a good resource for natural antioxidants.

Abstract
Abstract
The previous study on the dynamic processing characteristics of co-rotating twin-screw extruder based on a visible technique (which employed a “transparent” extruder) performed by the authors Wong et al. [1 and 2] had enabled a quantitative treatment to be carried out in the present paper on the melting behaviour of polymer during an extrusion process. The qualitative analysis performed previously [1] had led to the development of a melting model which was capable of revealing some of the fundamental melting behaviour. The model also enabled the determination of the length of screw required for completing melting (Zr). Melting characteristics in terms of effects of solid feeding rate, temperature, screw speed and channel depth on the predicted Zr were discussed to further our understanding on melting performance of polymer melt in intermeshing corotating twin-screw extruder.

Abstract
In data analysis, latent variables play a central role because they help provide powerful insights into a wide variety of phenomena, ranging from biological to human sciences. The latent tree model, a particular type of probabilistic graphical models, deserves attention. Its simple structure - a tree - allows simple and efficient inference, while its latent variables capture complex relationships. In the past decade, the latent tree model has been subject to significant theoretical and methodological developments. In this review, we propose a comprehensive study of this model. First we summarize key ideas underlying the model. Second we explain how it can be efficiently learned from data. Third we illustrate its use within three types of applications: latent structure discovery, multidimensional clustering, and probabilistic inference. Finally, we conclude and give promising directions for future researches in this field.

Abstract
We present a search for chargino-neutralino associated production using like electric charge dilepton events collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. One lepton is identified as the hadronic decay of a tau lepton, while the other is an electron or muon. In data corresponding to 6.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we obtain good agreement with standard model predictions and set limits on the chargino-neutralino production cross section for simplified gravity- and gauge-mediated models. As an example, assuming that the chargino and neutralino decays to taus dominate, in the simplified gauge-mediated model we exclude cross sections greater than 300 fb at 95% credibility level for chargino and neutralino masses of 225 GeV/c(2). This analysis is the first to extend the LHC searches for electroweak supersymmetric production of gauginos to high tanβ and slepton next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle scenarios.

Abstract
HD-ZIPIII and KANADI transcription factors have opposing and dramatic affects on plant development. Analysis of mutants shows these proteins to be master regulators of ad/abaxial (i.e., upper/lower) leaf polarity, leaf blade outgrowth, and branch formation. Because these factors do their work by regulating other genes, we have focused our attention on defining their targets. We have found overlap between the ad/abaxial regulatory pathway and hormone signaling pathways, especially pathways of abscisic acid and auxin signaling. This has led to the discovery that abscisic acid signaling acts upstream of HD-ZIPIII and KANADI in the control of germination and may ultimately explain how environmental stress pathways control new growth at the shoot apex. Auxin signaling conversely is downstream from HD-ZIPIII and KANADI action with these factors controlling targets at all steps of auxin action-biosynthesis, transport, regulation of transport, and signaling. Based on these findings, we propose a model in which the HD-ZIPIII and KANADI factors pattern auxin response in the embryo. Finally, many genes targeted for control by HD-ZIPIII and KANADI proteins are themselves transcription factors-indicating these master regulators call up tissue specific subprograms of transcriptional control to affect the many polar differences observed across tissues.

Abstract
Immunotherapy that is based on adoptive transfer of T lymphocytes, which are genetically modified to express chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) that recognize tumor-associated antigens, has been demonstrated to be an efficient cancer therapy. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGFR-1), a vital molecule involved in tumor growth and angiogenesis, has not been targeted by CAR-modified T lymphocytes. In this study, we generated CAR-modified T lymphocytes with human VEGFR-1 specificity (V-1 CAR) by electroporation. V-1 CAR-modified T lymphocytes were demonstrated to elicit lytic cytotoxicity to target cells in a VEGFR-1-dependent manner. The adoptive transfer of V-1 CAR T lymphocytes delayed tumor growth and formation and inhibited pulmonary metastasis in xenograft models and such efficacies were enhanced by cotransfer of T lymphocytes that expressed interleukin-15 (IL-15). Moreover, V-1 CAR-modified T lymphocytes lysed primary endothelial cells and impaired tube formation, in vitro. These data demonstrated the antitumor and anti-angiogenesis ability of V-1 CAR-modified T lymphocytes. Our study provides the rationale for the clinical translation of CAR-modified T lymphocytes with VEGFR-1 specificity.

Abstract
Increases in Rattus norvegicus ribonuclease/angiogenin inhibitor 1 (Rnh1) are observed in rat primary neuron injury and/or the regeneration process and in differentiated oligodendrocytes. However, the roles of Rnh1 in the central nervous system are still largely unexplored. RhoA is an important signaling protein that has been implicated in oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination. We demonstrate enhanced differentiation and myelination of oligodendrocytes mediated by Rnh1 in vitro. We further show that Rnh1 is expressed in oligodendrocyte precursors and oligodendrocytes. Importantly, Rnh1 strongly affects oligodendrocyte differentiation through RhoA-ROCK signaling. Moreover, changes in Rnh1 expression in oligodendrocytes regulates the expression and phosphorylation of Fyn, a regulator of RhoA activity. Finally, Rnh1 promotes myelination in vitro. These results show that Rnh1-mediated RhoA inactivation enhances the differentiation and myelination in oligodendrocytes. Overall, Rnh1 might contribute to oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination processes in vitro.

Liu T, Pretty IA, Goodwin M. Estimating the need for dental sedation: evaluating the threshold of the IOSN tool in an adult population. Br Dent J 2013; 214:E23. [PMID: 23619889 DOI: 10.1038/sj.bdj.2013.427] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Accepted: 03/13/2013] [Indexed: 12/17/2022]
Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was, through a service evaluation, to assess the use of the IOSN tool in determining whether threshold values were appropriate for identification of IV sedation and general anaesthetic (GA) cases from a referral population. METHODS A total of 105 patients were taken from a dental minor oral surgery referral service within a north west primary care trust over the course of six months. The IOSN tool was completed to assess: treatment complexity, medical and behavioural factors and patient anxiety levels. Each patient was then followed through to treatment. The type of sedation modality they received was compared to their IOSN score previously calculated and these results evaluated. RESULTS The findings suggest that 94% of patients were treated within primary care by the MOS service, of which 58% received local anaesthetic (LA) alone and 42% were treated by LA with IV sedation. There was a general marked trend as the IOSN score increased so did the treatment modality from LA, through sedation to GA. Logistic regression using the components of the IOSN tool to predict sedation use indicated the IOSN predictors distinguished between those who required sedation and those who didn't (chi-square = 56.411, p <0.0001, df = 3) with treatment complexity (Exp B = 10.836, p <0.0001) and anxiety (Exp B = 4.319, p <0.0001) shown to be significant factors in determining sedation need. CONCLUSIONS The data collected have shown that there is a positive relationship between the IOSN score and the type of treatment modality the patient received, suggesting that the threshold values are correctly set. It is concluded that IOSN tool is a useful means of aiding the clinician in both assessing and referring patients for that sedation need.

Abstract
Monoaminergic neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), also known as serotonin, plays important roles in modulating the function of the olfactory system. However, thus far, the knowledge about 5-HT and its receptors in olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) and their physiological role have not been fully characterized. In the present study, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed the presence of 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(1B) receptor subtypes in mouse olfactory epithelium at the mRNA level. With subtype selective antibodies and standard immunohistochemical techniques, both receptor subtypes were found to be positively labeled. To further elucidate the molecular mechanisms of 5-HT act on the peripheral olfactory transduction, the whole-cell patch clamp techniques were used on freshly isolated ORNs. We found that 5-HT decreased the magnitude of outward K(+) current in a dose-dependent manner and these inhibitory effects were markedly attenuated by the 5-HT(1A) receptor blocker WAY-100635 and the 5-HT(1B) receptor antagonist GR55562. These data suggested that 5-HT may play a role in the modulation of peripheral olfactory signals by regulating outward potassium currents, both 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(1B) receptors were involved in this regulation.

Abstract
This Letter reports a search for a narrow resonant state decaying into two W bosons and two b quarks where one W boson decays leptonically and the other decays into a quark-antiquark pair. The search is particularly sensitive to top-antitop resonant production. We use the full data sample of proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb(-1). No evidence for resonant production is found, and upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio for a narrow resonant state are extracted. Within a specific benchmark model, we exclude a Z' boson with mass, M(Z'), below 915 GeV/c(2) decaying into a top-antitop pair at the 95% credibility level assuming a Z' boson decay width of Γ(Z') = 0.012 M(Z'). This is the most sensitive search for a narrow qq-initiated tt resonance in the mass region below 750 GeV/c(2).

Abstract
We present a search for new particles in an extension to the standard model that includes a heavy Higgs boson (H(0)), a lighter charged Higgs boson (H(±)), and an even lighter Higgs boson h(0), with decays leading to a W-boson pair and a bottom-antibottom quark pair in the final state. We use events with exactly one lepton, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb(-1) collected by the CDF II detector in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s]= 1.96 TeV. We find the data to be consistent with standard model predictions and report the results in terms of a simplified Higgs-cascade-decay model, setting 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of cross section and branching fraction from 1.3 pb to 15 fb as a function of H(0) and H(±) masses for m(h)(0) = 126 GeV/c(2).

Abstract
In this report, 156 hygromycin-resistant mutants were generated via restriction enzyme-mediated insertional (REMI) mutagenesis. All mutants were subjected to a bioassay on detached leaves. Five mutants (T4, T39, T71, T91, and T135) showed reduced symptom development, whereas one mutant (T120) did not exhibit any symptoms on the leaves compared with the wild type. The pathogenicity of these mutants was further assayed through the spray inoculation of whole seedlings. The results demonstrated that the pathogenicity of the T4, T39, T71, T91, and T135 mutants was reduced, whereas the T120 mutant lost its pathogenicity. Southern blot analysis revealed that the plasmids were inserted at different sites in the genome with different copy numbers. Flanking sequences approximately 550, 860, and 150 bp were obtained from T7, T91, and T120, respectively through plasmids rescue. Sequence analysis of the flanking sequences from T7 and T91 showed no homology to any known sequences in GenBank. The flanking sequence from the T120 mutant was highly homologous to MAPKK kinases, which regulates sexual/asexual development, melanization, pathogenicity from Cochliobolus heterostrophus. These results indicate that REMI and plasmids rescue have great potential for finding pathogenicity genes.

Abstract
This Letter reports a measurement of the cross section for producing pairs of central prompt isolated photons in proton-antiproton collisions at a total energy sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV using data corresponding to 9.5 fb(-1) integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured differential cross section is compared to three calculations derived from the theory of strong interactions. These include a prediction based on a leading order matrix element calculation merged with a parton shower model, a next-to-leading order calculation, and a next-to-next-to-leading order calculation. The first and last calculations reproduce most aspects of the data, thus showing the importance of higher-order contributions for understanding the theory of strong interaction and improving measurements of the Higgs boson and searches for new phenomena in diphoton final states.
