Effect of seasonal variations and cold acclimation on serum transaminase activity of common Indian frog Rana tigrina

A definite seasonal change is observed in 2 transaminases, SGOT and SGPT of R. tigrina. Cold acclimation significantly depresses transaminase activity of serum.

Two regimes with the same TDF but differing morbidity used in the treatment of stage III carcinoma of the cervix

As an alternative to five daily fractions per week, one large fraction per week has been used to treat patients with stage III carcinoma of the cervix. This regime was greatly appreciated by our village women who could attend for weekly treatment from their homes. The weekly dose was matched with our previously acceptable daily fractionation using NSD, TDF and CRE values. In 24 patients the early reactions and tumour response were acceptable. Late rectal complications commencing seven months after treatment have, however, developed in all surviving patients with the new regime. The complications have been far more severe than those of a matched group of 24 patients treated with daily fractions and the schedule using one fraction per week has been abandoned. "Iso-effective" doses for the two techniques were selected from the NSD, TDF and CRE tables. This study clearly indicates that for one fraction per week the doses predicted are not "iso-effective" as far as the normal tissues of the pelvis are concerned.

Studies on glutamic-oxalacetic (GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic (GPT) transaminases of swine kidney worm Stephanurus dentatus (Diesing, 1839). I. Assay and general properties

Biochemical studies on the two transaminases GOT and GPT of swine kidney worm Stephanurus dentatus have been made. GOT has been found much more active than GPT. Enzyme activities are based on the formation of oxaloacetate (GOT) or pyruvate (GPT) from aspartic acid and alanine respectively with oxoglutarate. A linear relationship is observed between the enzyme concentration and activity. GOT shows a maximum activity at pH 8.0 and Michaelis constant 9 X 10(-3) M for male and 2.9 X 10(-3) M for female. GPT has an optimum pH of 7.5 and a Michaelis constant 19 X 10(-3) M for male and 8 X 10(-3) M for female. The optimum temperature for both GOT and GPT was 60 degrees C.

Imaging of incoherent extended objects by a polarizing microscope with crossed polarizers

Diffraction images of incoherent objects such as line, edge and disk have been evaluated by carrying out integration of the point spread function over appropriate limits. The resulting expressions have been computed numerically and the results are in agreement with those obtained previously using optical transfer function approach.

Image quality in an optical system operating in partially coherent light: effect of parabolic motion

Results of investigations on an optical system performance as affected by parabolic image motion have been presented in graphic form. The analysis has been performed using Schell's theorem, which occurs in the theory of partial coherence, under the assumption of scalar diffraction theory. Diffraction figure broadening along the direction of motion has been plotted for besinc and Gaussian forms of coherence functions across the circular aperture. Results of the present paper in case of besinc correlation have been shown to be identical with the diffraction images of uniform incoherent bright circular disks in the presence of parabolic motion. Hence the analysis of the present paper is also useful for persons engaged in work concerning aerial reconnaissance etc.

An unusual complication of pelvic exenteration

A case of recurrent carcinoma at the site of a urinary conduit stoma after total pelvic exenteration for carcinoma of the cervix is reported. Treatment by radical excision of the abdominal wall encircling the conduit and postoperative radiotherapy was successful. The patient is free of disease 6 years later.

Incoherent bar images formed by a polarizing microscope with crossed polarizers

Diffraction images of incoherent bar objects formed by a polarizing microscope with crossed polarizers are studied. Expression for intensity distribution has been derived and the results in the form of curves have been plotted. The images which are of unusual shape, different from the patterns formed by the ordinary microscope are strongly dependent upon the size of the bar/coherence parameter. The line spread function can be obtained by taking a very narrow bar.

Biochemical and histochemical studies on non-specific phosphomonoesterases of swine kidney worm Stephanurus dentatus (Diesing, 1839)

Biochemical and histochemical studies have been made on non-specific acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases of S. dentatus. The two forms of acid phosphomonoesterases have been found active at pH 4.0 and 6.0. The pH optima for the two forms of aklaline phosphomonoesterases lie at 8.0 and 10.0. Studies on the distribution of acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterases in various tissues have revealed an abundance of acid phosphomonoesterase in various parts of the alimentary canal and various organs of the reproductive system. The excretory ducts show alkaline phosphomonoesterase activity only.

Periodic nonsinusoidal vibration: effects in matched filtering for detection of signals buried in noise of uniform spectral density

In the present paper, the effects of periodic nonsinusoidal vibrations of spatial filters in signal detection experiments are considered. Performance degradation of such an optical information processing system is shown graphically, assuming that the signal is buried in noise of uniform spectral density. Results are compared with those in the presence of pure sinusoidal vibrations of the spatial filter. It is observed that the performance of the system decreases with the increase in departure from the pure sinusoidal case.
