Abstract
ABSTRACTRaman spectroscopy, FTIR and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used to study diamond-like nanocomposite (DLN) and metal containing DLN (Me-DLN) films. The FTIR spectra showed no appreciable absorption from the C-H stretch vibration band in DLN when 1 kV rf bias voltage was applied. Thermal annealing (450°C for 2 hrs) of (a) DLN and Cr-DLN films caused no change in the Raman spectra while (b) for Pt-DLN films there was a blue shift of both the crystalline (G) and microcrystalline (D) graphite-like features, an increase in the ID/IG intensity ratio and a decrease in the linewidths. The changes observed were more pronounced in the film with the highest Pt concentration. The STM image of this Pt-DLN film revealed a structure of aromatic graphite rings.

Abstract
ABSTRACTDiamond-like nanocomposite (DLN) and metal containing DLN (Me-DLN) films, synthesized in a combined process of deposition of carbon-silicon precursor and magnetron sputtering of a metal target, have been examined by Auger electron spectroscopy, Raman and IR spectroscopy, nanoindentation and internal stress measurements. The stability of the films under ion and electron irradiation and thermal annealing has been tested.

Abstract
Microwave radiation and conductive heating were used to completely kill adult Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) in wheat flour to protect the flour during storage without significantly effecting its quality. The microstructure of T. castaneum was analyzed to reveal the mechanisms leading to death under microwave and heat treatments. Microwave radiation and conductive heating had different effects on the microstructure of the cuticle of adult T. castaneum and on the ultrastructure of the cells of the epidermis, fat body, and midgut. Both treatments caused a large cavity to appear in the nucleus and the disappearance of mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus. After microwave treatment, there was little change in the surface microstructure but the epidermis was of uneven thickness and the four outer layers of the cuticle were thinner. Nuclear size was essentially unchanged, but fat body cells were fewer and coalesced together. In contrast, conductive heating led to a disordered arrangement of cells on the surface of T. castaneum and indistinct boundaries between layers of the cuticle. The nuclei were enlarged and the fat body cells noticeably fewer and indistinct with a scattered distribution. Thus, microwave treatment produced less severe effects on the surface microstructure and cellular ultrastructure of T. castaneum than did conductive heating. It is concluded that these cellular and surface changes were responsible for the death of T. castaneum.

Abstract
A/J and 129P3/J mouse strains have different susceptibilities to dental fluorosis, due to their genetic backgrounds. This study tested whether these differences are due to variations in water intake and/or F metabolism. A/J (susceptible to dental fluorosis) and 129P3/J mice (resistant) received drinking water containing 0, 10, or 50 ppm F. Weekly F intake, excretion and retention, and terminal plasma and femur F levels were determined. Dental fluorosis was evaluated clinically and by quantitative fluorescence (QF). Data were tested by two-way ANOVA. Although F intakes by the strains were similar, excretion by A/J mice was significantly higher due to greater urinary F excretion, which resulted in lower plasma and femur F levels. Compared with 129P3/J mice given 50 ppm F, significantly higher QF scores were recorded for A/J mice. In conclusion, these strains differ with respect to several features of F metabolism, and amelogenesis in the 129P3/J strain seems to be unaffected by high F exposure.

Abstract
In this article, SnO2nanowires (NWs) have been prepared and their microwave absorption properties have been investigated in detail. Complex permittivity and permeability of the SnO2NWs/paraffin composites have been measured in a frequency range of 0.1-18 GHz, and the measured results are compared with that calculated from effective medium theory. The value of maximum reflection loss for the composites with 20 vol.% SnO2NWs is approximately -32.5 dB at 14 GHz with a thickness of 5.0 mm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bisphosphonates (BPN) have actions on a variety of cell types including: osteoclasts, osteoblasts, osteocytes, and endothelial cells. The objectives of this report are to review the current state of understanding of the effects of BPNs on orthodontic tooth movement and to provide evidence on BPN's in vivo effects on bone marrow-derived osteoprogenitor cells. MATERIAL AND METHODS Mice from the C3H/HeJ (C3H), C57BL/6J (B6), FVB/NJ (FVB), and BALB/cByJ (BALB) strains were treated for 3 weeks with 0, 3, 30, or 150 mcg/kg/week alendronate (ALN) administered subcutaneous alone or in combination with 50 ppm fluoride (F). Bone marrow cells were harvested and subjected to in vitro colony-forming unit fibroblast (CFU-F) and colony-forming unit osteoblasts (CFU-OB) assays. RESULTS Baseline differences in CFU-F, CFU-OB/ALP+, and CFU-OB/total were observed among the four strains. Strain-specific responses to ALN and F treatments were observed for CFU-F, CFU-OB/ALP+, and CFU-OB/total. F treatment alone resulted in decreases in CFU-F (p = 0.013), CFU-OB/ALP+ (p = 0.005), and CFU-OB/total (p = 0.003) in the C3H strain. CFU-F (p = 0.036) were decreased by F in the B6 strain. No significant (NS) effects of F were observed for FVB and BALB. ALN treatment resulted in a significant decrease in CFU-F (p = 0.0014) and CFU-OB/total (p = 0.028) in C3H only. ALN treatment had NS effect on CFU-OB/ALP+ in all four strains. CONCLUSION Genetic factors appear to play a role in ALN's effects on CFU-F and CFU-OB/total but not on CFU-OB/ALP+.
