Distributed erbium-doped fiber amplifier for soliton transmission

The variations of the soliton power in distributed erbium-doped fiber amplifiers are numerically studied. There exists a doping density for minimum power variation. The results show that a soliton of short pulse width can maintain its pulse shape well in cascaded distributed amplifiers with a proper doping density, but an optical filter between the amplifiers is required for maintenance of the neighboring soliton separation.

Lymphatic capillary pressure in patients with primary lymphedema

Flow and pressure dynamics in minute human lymphatics are unexplored. Lymphatic capillary pressure was measured by the servo-nulling technique at the foot dorsum of 14 patients with primary lymphedema and 15 healthy controls. Glass micropipettes (7-9 microns) were inserted under microscopic control into lymphatic microvessels previously stained by fluorescence microlymphography (FITC-Dextran 150,000). Mean lymphatic capillary pressure was 7.9 +/- 3.4 mm Hg in the controls and 15.0 +/- 5.1 mm Hg in the patients. The difference was significant at the P < 0.001 level. In about half of the patients and control subjects studied pressure fluctuated by more than 3 mm Hg. The mean intralymphatic pressure of lymphedema patients was slightly below mean interstitial pressure measured by J. T. Christensen, N. J. Shaw, M. M. Hamas and H. K. Al Hassan (1985, Microcirc., Endothelium, Lymphatics 2, 267-384) (17.9 mm Hg) in lower leg lymphedema. Microlymphatic hypertension present in patients with primary lymphedema is probably an important factor for edema formation.

Diamond from the Dabie Shan Metamorphic Rocks and Its Implication for Tectonic Setting

Diamond occurs in ultrahigh pressure metamorphic rocks from Dabie Shan, Anhui Province, eastern China. Diamond-bearing rocks include eclogite, gamet-pyroxenite, and jadeitite. Diamond occurs in a mineral assemblage with coesite and jadeite. The diamonds and diamondiferous rocks of Dabie Shan are interpreted to be the products of ultrahigh pressure metamorphism in the undérthrust basement of the Yangtze continental plate during the early Mesozoic, at greater than 4.0 gigapascals and 900 degrees C. This interpretation is based on the distribution of rock units, the stability field of diamond, and isotopic data indicating a crustal origin for the rocks. Most diamonds occur as euhedral inclusions in garnets and are 10 to 60 micrometers across, although some are up to 700 micrometers across.

A glimpse of community-based rehabilitation in China

As in other developing countries, community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in China is very important. However, because of differences in the social system, economy, and cultural level, it is impossible to implement a uniform model of CBR. This paper introduces material to show how CBR in China tends to be spontaneous. Experience of CBR stations in Shenyang has initiated a new approach to CBR within the cultural characteristics of China.

[The suitable age for first-birth from the view of infant's health]

During March to June 1985, a health survey was carried out in a series of 963 infants of first-birth born in six hospitals in Changsha city. The health status of the infants was estimated by using the method of comprehensive score evaluation. The relationship between score and the mother's age was analysed. The results showed that the geometric mean of the score of the infants whose mother was 24-29 years old was lower than the infants whose mother was 19-23 years old or 30-38 years old. It indicated that the suitable age for first-birth was from 24 to 29 years old.

[Comparison of Chinese traditional therapy combined with Western medicine and Western medicine alone in the treatment of uveitis]

Seventy nine eyes of 46 patients with uveitis were treated with two therapeutic methods. One was mainly Chinese traditional dialectic therapy combined with western medicine. The other was western medica treatment using mainly corticosteroid. The group treated with combined methods (37 eyes of 22 cases) showed an effective rate of 91.8%. The group treated only with western medicine (42 eyes of 24 cases) showed a 66.6% < effective rate. In a follow-up period of six months to one year. The disease relapsed in 13 eyes out of the 33 eyes in the combined method group with recurrent rate of 39.4%. The recurrent rate of the western medical treatment was 86.4% (19 eyes out of the 22 eyes). It shows the Chinese traditional dialectic therapy combined with eastern medicine is better than the solely western medical treatment.

Photodynamic therapy for 50 patients with skin cancers or precancerous lesions

Hematoporphyrin photodynamic therapy (HpD-PDT) was used to treat 50 patients (51 lesions) with skin cancers or precancerous lesions. The preliminary results were satisfactory, with 44 cases (45 lesions) obtaining excellent results, 4 cases good, 1 case fair, and 1 case poor. The effective rate was 98%, the significant remission rate 96%, and the complete remission rate 88.2%. Exposure to sunlight should be avoided after HpD injection, since it produces photosensitivity. A follow-up for 1 to 3 years confirmed that HpD-PDT is a good new adjuvant therapy for selected cases. It brings a hopeful future to the treatment of skin cancers.

Microcapsules through polymer complexation. I: Complex coacervation of polymers containing a high charge density

Acidic and basic methacrylate co- and ter-polymers based on (respectively) methacrylic acid (MAA) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) were prepared by solution free radical polymerization and structurally characterized by NMR spectroscopy and dilute solution viscometry. Relationships between pKa/pKb/pH, solubility and extent of ionization were determined by acid/base titration. Yields and equilibrium water contents of complex coacervates from these polymers were measured, and microcapsule forming systems based on this effect were developed as potential prostheses for organ transplantation. Short term cell viability in these capsules was demonstrated using erythrocytes as a model cell line.

Raman cross talk of soliton collision in a lossless fiber

The cross talk induced by soliton collision with a Raman effect in a lossless fiber is discussed. There are frequency-shift enhancements for the two colliding solitons in addition to the energy transfer. The maximum rate-distance product limited by energy depletion is obtained for the soliton-based wavelength-division-multiplexing system.

Interaction of optical solitons with a forward Raman pump wave

The interaction between optical solitons and a forward Raman pump wave in fibers is investigated. It is found that when their relative velocity is small and the soliton pulse width is short, the soliton frequency is shifted by the interaction. Near zero relative velocity the pulse shape is distorted, in addition to having a frequency shift.

Adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-binding proteins and cAMP-dependent protein kinases in bovine adrenal cortical cell plasma membrane

A cAMP-binding protein and cAMP-dependent protein kinase have been identified and partially characterized in bovine adrenocortical plasma membranes. [3H]cAMP binding to the plasma membrane preparation demonstrates both high (Ka = 4.2 X 10(9) M-1) and low (Ka = 1.3 X 10(8) M-1) affinity binding sites. cAMP-dependent protein kinase was demonstrated using both bovine histone and endogenous substrates. The detergent-dependent solubilization characteristics of this cAMP-dependent protein kinase indicate that it is an integral membrane protein.

Synchronization of estrus in beef heifers with a norgestomet implant and prostaglandin F2α

In a 5-year study (1973-1977), 281 cycling beef heifers were treated with a 7-day norgestomet (SC21009) ear implant and an intramuscular injection of prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) at the time of implant removal or 24 hr before implant removal. Percentages of heifers in estrus by 36, 48, 60, 72, and 120 hr after implant removal were 32.4, 52.7, 71.6, 80.1, and 93.2, respectively. Onset of estrus occurred an average of 49.8 +/- 4.7 hr after treatment. Percentages of heifers in estrus 36 hr after treatment were 5.7 and 51.7 for those with a corpus luteum and those without a corpus luteum (or determined regressing by palpation) at implant removal, respectively. When PGF(2alpha) was injected 24 hr before implant removal, 55% of the heifers were in estrus by 36 hr after implant removal compared to 30% when PGF(2alpha) was injected at the time of implant removal; however, by 60 hr after implant removal the difference was 76% vs. 71%. First-service conception rates for synchronized and nonsynchronized heifers were 62.2% and 59.6%, respectively. During 1976 and 1977 heifers were checked for estrus every 4 hr and inseminated 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, or 30 hr after first detected to be in standing estrus. Conception rate was not significantly affected by time of insemination but tended to be higher for heifers bred 26 and 30 hr after first being detected in standing estrus (78.9% and 70.0% vs. average 59.2%). Treatment with a 7-day norgestomet implant plus a single injection of PGF(2alpha) 24 hr before or at implant removal appears to be a practical technique for synchronizing estrus in cycling heifers without affecting conception.
