Abstract
OBJECTIVE Male hypogonadism is common in the elderly and has been associated with increased risk of mortality. Our objective has been to assess the prevalence of primary and central hypogonadism in elderly male patients admitted to the hospital because of acute illness. We also evaluated the relationships between gonadal dysfunction and in-hospital mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS 150 patients, aged ≥65 years, admitted during 2010 and 2011 in our geriatric unit, were studied. Serum concentrations total, bioavailable and free testosterone, as well as of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone were quantified in every patient. Hypogonadism was defined by the presence of serum testosterone levels lower than 200 ng/dl. RESULTS Hypogonadism was found in 80 patients (53.3 %). Serum gonadotropin concentrations were elevated in 43.7 % of these patients, whereas 41.3 % of hypogonadic patients showed normal and 15 % low gonadotropin concentrations. Respiratory tract infection and congestive heart failure were the main causes of hospitalization in hypogonadal men, whereas acute cerebrovascular disease was the main reason for admission in eugonadal patients. Of the 13 patients who died during hospitalization, 12 were hypogonadic. Patients who died showed significantly lower serum levels of total, free and bioavailable testosterone than those found in patients who survived. CONCLUSION Our results show that about half of patients admitted for acute illness have hypogonadism, mainly of non-hypergonadotropic type. Gonadal hypofunction is significantly related with in-hospital mortality. A low value of serum testosterone may be a predictor for mortality in elderly male patients.

Abstract
An experimental and theoretical study of the structural properties of monoclinic bismuth oxide (α-Bi2O3) under high pressures is here reported. Both synthetic and mineral bismite powder samples have been compressed up to 45 GPa and their equations of state have been determined with angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements. Experimental results have been also compared with theoretical calculations which suggest the possibility of several phase transitions below 10 GPa. However, experiments reveal only a pressure-induced amorphization between 15 and 25 GPa, depending on sample quality and deviatoric stresses. The amorphous phase has been followed up to 45 GPa and its nature discussed.

Abstract
La(1-x)Bi(x)Mn2O5 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1) oxides are members of the RMn2O5 family. The entire series has been prepared in polycrystalline form by a citrate technique. The evolution of their magnetic and crystallographic structures has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and magnetization measurements. All the samples crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with space group Pbam containing infinite chains of Mn(4+)O6 octahedra sharing edges, linked together by Mn(3+)O5 pyramids and (La/Bi)O8 units. These units become strongly distorted as the amount of Bi increases, due to the electron lone pair of Bi(3+). All the members of the series are magnetically ordered below TN = 25-40 K and they present different magnetic structures. For the samples with low Bi content (x = 0.2 and 0.4) the magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k = (0,0,1/2). The magnetic moments of the Mn(4+) ions placed at octahedral sites are ordered according to the basis vectors (Gx, Ay, 0) whereas the Mn(3+) moments, located at pyramidal sites, are ordered according to the basis vectors (0, 0, Cz). When the content of Bi increases, two different propagation vectors are needed to explain the magnetic structure: k1 = (0,0,1/2) and k2 = (1/2,0,1/2). For x = 0.6 and 0.8, k2 is predominant over k1 and for this propagation vector (k2) the magnetic arrangement is defined by the basis vectors (Gx, Ay,0) and (Fx, Cy, 0) for Mn(4+) and Mn(3+) ions, respectively.

Abstract
Order-disorder phase transitions induced by thermal annealing have been studied in the ordered-vacancy compound ZnGa2Se4 by means of Raman scattering and optical absorption measurements. The partially disordered as-grown sample with tetragonal defect stannite (DS) structure and I4¯2m space group has been subjected to controlled heating and cooling cycles. In situ Raman scattering measurements carried out during the whole annealing cycle show that annealing the sample to 400 °C results in a cation ordering in the sample, leading to the crystallization of the ordered tetragonal defect chalcopyrite (DC) structure with I4¯ space group. On decreasing temperature the ordered cation scheme of the DC phase can be retained at ambient conditions. The symmetry of the Raman-active modes in both DS and DC phases is discussed and the similarities and differences between the Raman spectra of the two phases emphasized. The ordered structure of annealed samples is confirmed by optical absorption measurements and ab initio calculations, that show that the direct bandgap of DC-ZnGa2Se4 is larger than that of DS-ZnGa2Se4.

Abstract
Some biomedical research procedures, such as organ xenotransplantation, usually require intensive hemotherapy. Knowledge of the whole phenotype of blood donor and graft could be useful in the field of xenotransplantation. Human and simian-type categories of blood groups have been established and they can be tested by standard methods used for human blood grouping. The aim of this work was to study the incidence of non-ABO blood group systems in different species of non-human primates, which are employed in biomedical research. The phenotype of Rh, Lewis, Kidd, Kell, MNSs, Lutheran, P and Duffy antigens was investigated in olive baboon (n = 48), chacma baboon (n = 9), Guinea baboon (n = 14), Rhesus macaque (n = 38) and squirrel monkey (n = 30) by using commercial microtyping cards. Kell, Lutheran, Kidd and Duffy antigens have been detected in all species, Rh in squirrel monkey, MNSs in rhesus macaque and squirrel monkey, and Lewis in baboon and rhesus macaque. There were differences in frequency and haemagglutination scores between species regardless of their gender and age. The main differences were found in squirrel monkey when compared with baboons and macaques. This typing system provides a tool to assess the presence of antigens in animals used for experimental procedures, such as xenotransplantation and xenotransfusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of sodium heparin concentrations on antibody- and complement-mediated cytolysis by means of a real-time cell analyzer system (RTCA) investigating the complement regulation ability of heparin to reduce or prevent hyperacute in an in vitro model of pig-to-baboon xenotransplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts isolated from the skin of two transgenic pigs were cultured in microelectronic 96-well plates for 9 hours. Then, we added 20 μL of normal sera from two healthy adult olive baboons (Papio anubis) or two volunteer healthy humans. Simultaneous cultures had added heparin at 3.5, 5, 7.5, 15, and 30 IU. Moreover, rabbit complement was added for the exogenous complement group (ExC) versus the other group only with the complement present in the sera as an endogenous complement group (EnC). Cellular cultures were monitored over 150 hours after challenge. With cellular index (CI) data recorded by the xCELLigence software system, we calculate area under the curve versus concentration (AUC) and minimum CI (CImin) versus concentration. RESULTS All cultures showed decreased CI after challenge with human or baboon sera. There was a high correlation for AUC (r(2) > 0.90) and CImin versus concentration (r(2) > 0.970) during the first 40 hours postchallenge among the EnC group, regardless of human or baboon sera. However, there was no correlation for AUC and CImin for the ExC group. There was a reduction of CImin related to increased heparin concentrations. CONCLUSIONS The addition of heparin did not reduce antibody- and complement-mediated cytolysis assessed in vitro by RTCA in pig-to-baboon compatibility assays.

Abstract
Despite numerous efforts, continuous wave (CW) lasing in dye doped, one-dimensional (1D) photonic bandgap cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) structures has not been previously reported, to our knowledge. Here we report on the observation of lasing in such structures under both coherent (laser) and incoherent (LED) CW light excitation. To achieve this effect, we used a 1D-photonic bandgap structure made of a polymer stabilized CLC with a pitch gradient across the cell thickness. A spectral reflectivity profile of such a CLC structure reveals local minima in the area within a photonic stopband and close to it. The realization of lasing pumped by low power CW light sources opens the possibility of all-organic, compact, tunable CW lasers for display and medical applications.

Abstract
The long-range magnetic ordering of PrMn(2)O(5) has been studied on polycrystalline samples from neutron diffraction and specific heat measurements. The onset of antiferromagnetic ordering is observed at T(N) ≈ 25 K. In the temperature interval 18 K < T < 25 K the magnetic structure is defined by the propagation vector k(1) = (1/2,0,0). Below 18 K, some additional magnetic satellites appear in the NPD patterns, which are indexed with k(2) = (0,0,1/2). Therefore, below 18 K the magnetic structure consists of two independent magnetic domains, defined by the propagation vectors k(1) and k(2). The magnetic structure of the k(1)-domain is given by the basis vectors (C(x),0,0) and (C(x)',0,0) for Mn(4h) and Mn(4f), respectively. In the k(2)-domain, the magnetic structure is defined by the basis vectors (0,0,G(z)) and (F(x)',G(y)',0) for Mn(4h) and Mn(4f), respectively. At T = 1.5 K, for the magnetic phase associated with k(1), the magnetic moments of the Mn atoms at the 4h and 4f sites are 1.82(7) and 1.81(6) μ(B), respectively; for the magnetic phase associated with k(2), the magnetic moments for the Mn(4h) and Mn(4f) atoms are 0.59(5) and 2.62(5) μ(B), respectively.
