Abstract
ABSTRACTParallel molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate dynamic fracture in bulk and nanostructured silica glasses at room temperature and 1000 K. In bulk silica the crack front develops multiple branches and nanoscale pores open up ahead of the crack tip. Pores coalesce and then they merge with the advancing crack-front to cause cleavage fracture. The calculated fracture toughness is in good agreement with experiments. In nanostrucutred silica the crack-front meanders along intercluster boundaries, merging with nanoscale pores in these regions to cause intergranular fracture. The failure strain in nanostructured silica is significantly larger than in the bulk systems.

Abstract
ABSTRACTOxidation of an aluminum nanocluster (252,158 atoms) of radius 100Å placed in gaseous oxygen (530,727 atoms) is investigated by performing molecular-dynamics simulations on parallel computers. The simulation takes into account the effect of charge transfer between Al and 0 based on the electronegativity equalization principles. We find that the oxidation starts at the surface of the cluster and the oxide layer grows to a thickness of ∼28Å. Evolutions of local temperature and densities of Al and 0 are investigated. The surface oxide melts because of the high temperature resulting from the release of energy associated with Al-O bondings. Amorphous surface-oxides are obtained by quenching the cluster. Vibrational density-of-states for the surface oxide is analyzed through comparisons with those for crystalline Al, Al nanocluster, and α-Al2O3

Abstract
Shock-induced collapse of nanobubbles in water is investigated with molecular dynamics simulations based on a reactive force field. We observe a focused jet at the onset of bubble shrinkage and a secondary shock wave upon bubble collapse. The jet length scales linearly with the nanobubble radius, as observed in experiments on micron-to-millimeter size bubbles. Shock induces dramatic structural changes, including an ice-VII-like structural motif at a particle velocity of 1 km/s. The incipient ice VII formation and the calculated Hugoniot curve are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract
Impurities segregated to grain boundaries of a material essentially alter its fracture behavior. A prime example is sulfur segregation-induced embrittlement of nickel, where an observed relation between sulfur-induced amorphization of grain boundaries and embrittlement remains unexplained. Here, 48x10(6)-atom reactive-force-field molecular dynamics simulations provide the missing link. Namely, an order-of-magnitude reduction of grain-boundary shear strength due to amorphization, combined with tensile-strength reduction, allows the crack tip to always find an easy propagation path.

Abstract
Hydrogen production by metal particles in water could provide a renewable energy cycle, if its reaction kinetics is accelerated. Here, ab initio molecular dynamics simulation reveals rapid hydrogen production from water by a cluster (or superatom) consisting of a magic number of aluminum atoms, Al{n} (for instance, n=12 or 17). We find a low activation-barrier mechanism, in which a pair of Lewis-acid and base sites on the Al{n} surface preferentially catalyzes hydrogen production. This reaction is immensely assisted by rapid proton transport in water via a chain of hydrogen-bond switching events similar to the Grotthuss mechanism, which converts hydroxide ions to water molecules at the Lewis-acid sites and supplies hydrogen atoms at the Lewis-base sites.

Abstract
We study shear deformation and breakup of voids in silica glass using molecular dynamics simulations. With an increase in the shear strain, two kinds of defects--threefold-coordinated silicon and nonbridging oxygen atoms--appear as spherical voids deform elastically into ellipsoidal shapes. For shear strains epsilon>15%, nanocracks appear on void surfaces and voids deform plastically into a threadlike structure. Nanocracks are nucleated by the migration of threefold-coordinated Si and nonbridging O on -Si-O-Si-O- rings. For epsilon>40%, the threadlike structures break up into several fragments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We retrospectively evaluated the predictive factors for lymph node metastasis in poorly differentiated early gastric cancer (poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma, signet-ring cell carcinoma, mucinous adenocarcinoma) in order to examine the possibility of endoscopic resection for poorly differentiated early gastric cancer. METHODS A total of 573 patients with histologically poorly differentiated type early gastric cancer (269 mucosal and 304 submucosal), who had undergone curative gastrectomy, were enrolled in this study. Risk factors for lymph node metastasis were evaluated by univariate and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Lymph node metastasis was observed in 74 patients (12.9%) (6 with mucosal cancer and 68 with submucosal cancer). By univariate analysis risk factors for lymph node metastasis were lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (presence), depth of invasion (submucosa), and tumor diameter (> 20 mm), ulcer or ulcer scar (presence), and histological type (mucinous adenocarcinoma). By multivariate analysis, risk factors for lymph node metastasis were LVI, depth of invasion, and tumor diameter. In mucosal cancers, the incidence of lymph node metastasis was 0% irrespective of LVI in tumors smaller than 20 mm, and 1.7% in tumors 20 mm or larger without LVI. In submucosal cancers, the incidence of lymph node metastasis was 2.4% in tumors smaller than 20 mm without LVI. CONCLUSIONS A histologically poorly differentiated type mucosal gastric cancer measuring less than 20 mm and without LVI may be a candidate for endoscopic resection. This result should be confirmed in a larger study with many patients.

Abstract
During the past several years, advances at the intersection of cardiovascular development and heart stem cell biology have begun to reshape our view of the fundamental logic that drives the formation of discrete tissue components in the mammalian heart. Although many of the critical genes that control cardiac myogenesis have been identified, our understanding of how a highly diverse and specialized subset of heart cell lineages arises from mesodermal precursors and is subsequently assembled into distinct muscle chambers, coronary arterial tree and large vessels, valvular tissue, and conduction system/pacemaker cells remains at a relatively primitive stage. Recent studies have uncovered a diverse group of closely related heart progenitors that are central in controlling and coordinating these complex steps of cardiogenesis. Understanding the pathways that control their formation, renewal, and subsequent conversion to specific differentiated progeny forms the underpinning for unraveling the pathways for congenital heart disease and has direct relevance to cardiovascular regenerative medicine. This current brief review highlights the discovery and delineation of the role of Islet-1 cardiovascular progenitors in the generation of diverse heart cell lineages and how the implications of these findings are revising our classification and thinking about congenital heart disease in general.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminolaevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a noninvasive and effective treatment for superficial skin cancers. Etretinate, a derivate of vitamin A, with the chemical formula ethyl(2E,4E,6E,8E)-9-(4-methoxy-2,3,6-trimethylphenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-nona-tetraenoate, has been reported to have antitumour effects and to regulate the proliferation and differentiation of skin cancers. OBJECTIVE In order to develop more efficient PDT, we investigated whether etretinate enhanced the cytotoxic action of ALA-based PDT against human squamous cell carcinoma cell line, HSC-5. METHOD The in vitro cytotoxicity was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Apoptotic cells were detected by double-staining with fluorescent annexin V and propidium iodide. Intracellular protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) converted from exogenous ALA was measured by a fluorescence meter. RESULTS HSC-5 cells pretreated with a nontoxic concentration of etretinate became more susceptible to the cytotoxic action of ALA-based PDT. Etretinate-pretreated cells underwent apoptosis in response to ALA-based PDT. Etretinate pretreatment resulted in enhanced accumulation of ALA-dependent intracellular PpIX. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that etretinate enhances the susceptibility of HSC-5 cells to ALA-based PDT via the intracellular increase of ALA-dependent PpIX. Etretinate might be useful for improvement of ALA-based PDT.

Abstract
Rapid reaction of a molten metal with an oxide is the key to understanding recently discovered fast reactions in nanothermite composites. We have investigated the thermite reaction of Fe2O3 with aluminum by molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic forces calculated quantum mechanically in the framework of the density functional theory. A redox reaction to form iron metal and Al2O3 initiates with the rapid formation of Al-O bonds at the interface within 1 ps, followed by the propagation of the combustion front with a velocity of 70 m/s for at least 5 ps at 2000 K. The reaction time for an oxygen atom to change character from Fe2O3 type to Al2O3 type at the interface is estimated to be 1.7+/-0.9 ps , and bond-overlap population analysis has been used to calculate reaction rates.

Abstract
Four bentonites from various sources were exposed to batch adsorption testing, selective sequential extraction and consolidation tests to investigate their metal retention capacity and hydraulic conductivity for geoenvironmental application such as in clay barrier materials. The Japanese bentonites (JB1-JB3) contain approximately 2-4% of carbonate and trace amount of zeolite (JB2 and JB3), whereas the US bentonite has < 1% carbonate and no zeolite. The rank of smectite content in the bentonites are USB > JB1 > JB3 > JB2. The materials ranked as JB2 approximately JB3 > JB1 > USB, according to retention capacity, while after the removal of carbonate the retention capacity order was JB1 approximately JB2 approximately JB3 > USB. SSE results indicate that carbonate plays a major role at low Pb solution concentration and precipitate as PbCO3. Once the carbonate is exhausted, the clay composition dominates the sorption process. The hydraulic conductivity of the bentonite mixtures (basalt + 10% bentonite) using water was kUSB < kJB1 < kJB3 < kJB2, consistent with the smectite content and swelling power, with USB having the highest proportion of smectite. Among the Japanese bentonites studied, JB1 is the best candidate for barrier material, comparable to the widely used USB.

Abstract
Multimillion-to-billion-atom molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the interaction of voids in silica glass under hydrostatic tension. Nanometer size cavities nucleate in intervoid ligaments as a result of the expansion of Si-O rings due to a bond-switching mechanism, which involves bond breaking between Si-O and bond formation between that Si and a nonbridging O. With further increase in strain, nanocracks form on void surfaces and ligaments fracture through the growth and coalescence of ligament nanocavities in a manner similar to that observed in ductile metallic alloys.

Abstract
Mechanical stimuli in energetic materials initiate chemical reactions at shock fronts prior to detonation. Shock sensitivity measurements provide widely varying results, and quantum-mechanical calculations are unable to handle systems large enough to describe shock structure. Recent developments in reactive force-field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) combined with advances in parallel computing have paved the way to accurately simulate reaction pathways along with the structure of shock fronts. Our multimillion-atom ReaxFF-MD simulations of l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazine (RDX) reveal that detonation is preceded by a transition from a diffuse shock front with well-ordered molecular dipoles behind it to a disordered dipole distribution behind a sharp front.

Abstract
We have investigated the decomposition and chemisorption of a 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) molecule on Al(111) surface using molecular dynamics simulations, in which interatomic forces are computed quantum mechanically in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT). The real-space DFT calculations are based on higher-order finite difference and norm-conserving pseudopotential methods. Strong attractive forces between oxygen and aluminum atoms break N-O and N-N bonds in the RDX and, subsequently, the dissociated oxygen atoms and NO molecules oxidize the Al surface. In addition to these Al surface-assisted decompositions, ring cleavage of the RDX molecule is also observed. These reactions occur spontaneously without potential barriers and result in the attachment of the rest of the RDX molecule to the surface. This opens up the possibility of coating Al nanoparticles with RDX molecules to avoid the detrimental effect of oxidation in high energy density material applications.
