Abstract
Eps15 and Eps15R are related tyrosine kinase substrates, which have been implicated in endocytosis and synaptic vesicle recycling. Through the protein:protein interaction abilities of their EH domains, they establish a complex network of interactions with several proteins, including Numb, a protein necessary for neuronal cell fate specification. We analyzed the expression of Eps15 and Eps15R during murine development, at the time of active neurogenesis. The most striking difference was at the level of subcellular localization, with Eps15 present in the cytosol and on the plasma membrane, while Eps15R exhibited mainly a nuclear localization. Interesting topographical differences also emerged. In the 12.5 days post coitum neuroepithelium, Eps15 was expressed in the ventricular zone, which contains proliferating neuroblasts, whereas Eps15R was found only in postmitotic neurons. Conversely, both proteins were expressed in sensory and cranial ganglia. At later times, the expression of Eps15 and Eps15R was widely maintained in neuronal structures. In other tissues, Eps15 was first seen in the liver primordium and at low levels in choroid plexus, lung, kidney and intestine; later on the expression was maintained at high levels in epithelia. Nuclear staining of Eps15R was present in kidney, intestine, lung and liver, as well as in heart and pancreas.

Abstract
The formation of multi-species feeding flocks (MSFFs) through visual recruitment is considered an important strategy for obtaining food in seabirds and its functionality has been ascribed to enhanced foraging efficiency. Its use has been demonstrated in much of the world's oceans and includes numerous species. However, there is scant information on the temporal stability of the composition and abundance of MSFFs as well as the effect of seasonal food availability on their dynamics. Between July 2006 and September 2014, we conducted monthly at-sea seabird counts at Valparaiso Bay (32°56' to 33°01'S, 71°36' to 71°46'W) within the area of influence of the Humboldt Current in central Chile. This area is characterized by a marked seasonality in primary and secondary production associated with upwelling, mainly during austral spring-summer. Based on studies that provide evidence that flocking is most frequent when food is both scarce and patchy, we hypothesized that seabird MSFF attributes (i.e. frequency of occurrence, abundance and composition) will be modified according to the seasonal availability of food. Using generalized linear models (GLMs), our results show that the contrasting seasonality in food availability of the study area (using chlorophyll-a concentration as a proxy) had no significant influence on MSFF attributes, sparsely explaining their variations (P>0.05). Rather than seasonal food availability, the observed pattern for MSFF attributes at Valparaiso Bay suggests a substantial influence of reproductive and migratory (boreal and austral migrants) habits of birds that modulates MSFF dynamics consistently throughout the whole year in this highly variable and patchy environment. We highlight the importance of visual recruitment as a mechanism by which migratory and resident birds interact. This would allow them to reduce resource unpredictability, which in turn has a major impact on structuring seabird's MSFF dynamics.

Abstract
Homeobox genes (Hox genes) control segmentation and segment specificity in Drosophila. Hox genes have been detected in several species from insects to vertebrates. Differential and stage-related expression has been observed in human embryonic tissues as well. We have investigated whether the cell line Caco-2 and human adult intestine express Hox genes. Caco-2 is a cell line derived from a human colon carcinoma and exhibits a spontaneous enterocytic differentiation after cellular confluency in vitro. At 7, 14 and 21 days after seeding we have found that Hox-2.3 and one Hox-3 gene hybridize to poly(A)+RNA in a stage-related fashion. Moreover, the 21 days pattern of hybridization resembles that one observed in adult small intestine. The Caco-2 cell line provides a model system that allows a detailed analysis of cellular factors controlling transcription and stability of Hox gene products.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of fibre source (FS) in high-grain feedlot diets on liveweight gain (LWG) of steers and calves and carcass traits of steers at slaughter. Eighteen steers (330 ± 27.3 kg) and 18 calves (153 ± 11.9 kg) were randomly allotted within animal category to one of three high-grain diets varying in the FS, including either grass hay (H, 66% neutral detergent fibre (NDF)), rice hulls (RH, 85% NDF) or wood chips (W, 90% NDF), and a total mixed ration formulated for equal levels of digestible DM, crude protein and NDF, within category. Animals were individually fed (3 kg DM/100 kg LW, distributed in four meals) during 56 days. The LW increased linearly with time in all treatments (P < 0.01). FS did not affect calves’ LWG (P > 0.05), but it resulted in differences in steers LWG (H: 1.77b; RH: 1.51c; W: 2.02a kg/day, P < 0.05). However, no differences were observed in hot carcass weight (P > 0.05), which resulted in higher carcass yield (P < 0.05) for steers fed RH (55.0%) compared with H (53.5%) and W (53.3%). There was a significant interaction (P < 0.05) for feed : gain ratio, with an improvement of this value observed only for steers fed the W diet. Although varying the FS affected rumination of calves and steers (P < 0.01) and the time spent eating of steers (P < 0.05), it did not represent any constraint for animal production. This study suggests by-products high in fibre content, such as RH and W, could be used in substitution to H in high-grain feedlot diets when fed at equal NDF concentration in the ration, both for calves and steers. Because calves are sometimes grown on a high-concentrate diet during winter before spring grazing, further research is needed to quantify potential residual effects on LWG after they return to pasture.

Abstract
We determined the nucleotide sequence of the DNA region around the 5'-terminus of 18 S rRNA in two cloned rDNA gene units of Drosophila melanogaster. The 5'-base is within a sequence CATTATT which is present also at the 3'-terminus of the 18 S rRNA coding region. In this case it is known that the situation is CATTA3' . TT. With various methods we determined that the precise 5'-cleavage site is CATT . 5'ATT.

Abstract
The upwelling hypothesis has been proposed to explain reduced or lack of population structure in seabird species specialized in food resources available at cold-water upwellings. However, population genetic structure may be challenging to detect in species with large population sizes, since variation in allele frequencies are more robust under genetic drift. High gene flow among populations, that can be constant or pulses of migration in a short period, may also decrease power of algorithms to detect genetic structure. Penguin species usually have large population sizes, high migratory ability but philopatric behavior, and recent investigations debate the existence of subtle population structure for some species not detected before. Previous study on Humboldt penguins found lack of population genetic structure for colonies of Punta San Juan and from South Chile. Here, we used mtDNA and nuclear markers (10 microsatellites and RAG1 intron) to evaluate population structure for 11 main breeding colonies of Humboldt penguins, covering the whole spatial distribution of this species. Although mtDNA failed to detect population structure, microsatellite loci and nuclear intron detected population structure along its latitudinal distribution. Microsatellite showed significant Rst values between most of pairwise locations (44 of 56 locations, Rst = 0.003 to 0.081) and 86% of individuals were assigned to their sampled colony, suggesting philopatry. STRUCTURE detected three main genetic clusters according to geographical locations: i) Peru; ii) North of Chile; and iii) Central-South of Chile. The Humboldt penguin shows signal population expansion after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), suggesting that the genetic structure of the species is a result of population dynamics and foraging colder water upwelling that favor gene flow and phylopatric rate. Our findings thus highlight that variable markers and wide sampling along the species distribution are crucial to better understand genetic population structure in animals with high dispersal ability.

Abstract
To assess the efficacy of ammoniation in the detoxification of endophyte-infected tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), 40 male Harlan Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the following four treatments for 28 d: endophyte-free (E-), endophyte-infected (E+), ammoniated (2% dry matter basis, 7 d) endophyte-free (AE-), and ammoniated endophyte-infected (AE+) tall fescue seed. Total pyrrolizidine alkaloid (N-acetyl and N-formyl loline) and ergovaline contents of endophyte-infected fescue seed were reduced 24 and 54%, respectively, by ammoniation. Endophyte-infected treatment groups had lower (P < 0.01) daily feed intakes (DFI), daily weight gains (DWG), feed effieiencies, and primary serum hemagglutination titers to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) immunization than endophyte-free treatment groups. Performance parameters were higher (P < 0.01) for ammoniated diets in comparison to non-ammoniated die [s; however, anti-SRBC titers were not significantly different. When compared to the E+ diet, the AIE+ diet increased (P < 0.01) DFI (24%), DWG (41%) and feed efficiency (13%).

Abstract
A preliminary study comparing three dimensional time of flight (TOF 3D) Magnetic Resonance angiography (MRA) and spiral CT angiography (SCTA) in the detection and evaluation of internal carotid stenosis. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was the gold standard. Twenty patients with clinical signs of cerebrovascular insufficiency underwent MRA, SCTA and DSA within a three day period. Both internal carotid arteries were evaluated for absence or degree of stenosis. Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy, concordance, overstimation and understimation were assessed. MRA showed a higher sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy and concordance compared to SCTA (92% versus 80%, 98,2% versus 96,4%, 96,3% versus 88%, respectively). MRA demonstrated a 5% overstimation rate whereas SCTA demonstrated a 7,5% understimation rate. These differences are not statistically significant. These results suggest that MRA is the more useful, non invasive modality for the detection and evaluation of the internal carotid artery with a greater than 70% stenoses.

Abstract
RETINOIC acid had been implicated as a natural morphogen in chicken and frog embryogenesis, and is presumed to act through the gene regulatory activity of a family of nuclear receptors. Homeobox genes, which specify positional information in Drosophila and possibly in vertebrate embryogenesis, are among the candidate responsive genes. We previously reported that retinoic acid specifically induces human homeobox gene (HOX) expression in the embryonal carcinoma cell line NT2/D1. We now show that the nine genes of the HOX2 cluster are differentially activated in NT2/D1 cells exposed to retinoic acid concentrations ranging from 10(-8) to 10(-5) M. Genes located in the 3' half of the cluster are induced at peak levels by 10(-8) M retinoic acid, whereas a concentration of 10(-6) to 10(-5) M is required to fully activate 5' genes. At both high and low retinoic acid concentrations, HOX2 genes are sequentially activated in embryonal carcinoma cells in the 3' to 5' direction.

Abstract
Recurrent meningitis in children may be due to immune deficiency or abnormal communication of CSF spaces with mucosal spaces (basal skull fractures, encephalocele, etc.). We report a 6-year-old boy, suffering from recurrent meningitis and sensorineural hearing loss. CT scans of the temporal bones demonstrated a bilateral Mondini dysplasia. In patients with this congenital inner ear anomaly, recurrent meningitis may be due to a CSF-middle ear fistula. We think that it is necessary to investigate all patients with recurrent meningitis and sensorineural hearing loss with CT scans of the temporal bones.

Abstract
The HMGI protein family includes three proteins, named HMG-I, HMG-Y and HMGI-C. The first two proteins are coded for by the same gene, HMGI (Y), through an alternative splicing mechanism. Their expression is elevated in neoplastic tissues and cells and this overexpression has a causal role in the process of cellular neoplastic transformation. We demonstrate that the HMGI (Y) gene is expressed at very low levels in normal adult tissues, whereas in embryonic tissues it is expressed at high levels comparable to those detected in neoplastic tissues. Specifically, a very high expression of the HMGI (Y) gene was detected in all embryonic tissues at 8.5 dpc. Then in the following days, even though the gene is expressed essentially in all tissues, an abundant gene expression was restricted to some tissues. These results indicate an important role of the HMGI (Y) gene in development.

Abstract
We isolated two zebrafish sequences containing a homeobox related to orthodenticle (otd), a gene expressed in the developing head of Drosophila. One of these is clearly homologous to Otx1, a homeobox gene previously reported to be expressed in the developing rostral brain of the mouse. We termed this zebrafish gene otx1. The second gene is not as closely related to Otx1 and is equally divergent from Otx2, a second homeobox gene expressed in the developing rostral brain of the mouse. We termed it otx3, even if a corresponding murine Otx3 gene has not been reported yet. Both genes are expressed in early-gastrula zebrafish embryos in the involuting presumptive anterior mesendoderm. With the extension of the body axis, the expression domain of both genes extends to neuroectodermal regions fated to become fore- and mid-brain. From this stage the expression domains of the two genes differ slightly from each other but both cover the rostral brain with a sharp posterior boundary coinciding with that between midbrain and hind-brain. This late expression closely corresponds to that of the murine Otx1 gene, whereas the earliest expression of both zebrafish otx genes is different from that of Otx1 and reminiscent of that of Otx2 in the mouse. In this light, the zebrafish otx1 and otx3 genes appear to share some expression features of both murine Otx1 and Otx2. It will be of considerable interest to study the specific role of the various genes of the otx family in the development of the zebrafish brain regions. The peculiar spatio-temporal pattern of these genes during early zebrafish gastrulation suggests a role of this gene family in interactions between anterior mesendoderm and neuroectoderm.

To determine the effect of extending the duration of ammonia (2% dry matter basis) treatment ti'om 1 to 5 wk on the toxicity of endophyte-infected tall fescue seed, 60 male Harlan Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the following six treatments during a 28-d trial: endophyte-free (E-), endophyte-infected (E+), 1 wk ammoniated endophyte-fee (1AE-), 1 wk ammoniated endophyte-infected (1AE+), 5 wk ammoniated endophyte-free (5AE-), and 5 wk ammoniated endophyte-infected (5AE+) tall fescue seed. The concentration of total pyrrolizidine alkaloids (N-acetyl and N-formyl loline) or E+ rescue was reduced from 4203 12 g/g to 3009 and 2533 I-tg/g by the 1AE+ and 5AE+ treatments, respectively. Ergovaline was lowered from 3.77 to 1.57 12 g/g by 1AE+ and eliminated by 5AE+. Endophyte-infected treatment groups had depressed (P < 0.0001) dally feed intakes (DFI), daily weight gains (DWG), feed efficiencies (G/F), primary antibody responses, and T cell and B cell mitogenic responses than endophyte-free treatment groups. Ammoniation of endophyte-infected rescue seed improved DFI and DWG (P < 0.0001) and G/F (P < 0.05); however, there was no difference in performance criteria between the 1-wk and 5-wk ammoniation treatments. Endophyte-induced depressions in immune function were not alleviated by ammoniation.

Abstract
The authors report their experience in the optimization of the diagnostic accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Cholangiography (MRC) to detect choledochal stones; pre- and post-MIP post-processing images were compared. Thirty patients with dilated biliary ducts (mean age: 55.6 years) were examined with MRC; two of them had stones in the intrahepatic biliary ducts. The gold standard and the inclusion criterion was ERCP. MRC was carried out with a 1.5 T superconductive magnet (Signa) with T2-weighted FAST SE sequences (TR/TE; 10000/256, matrix: 256 x 128, slice thickness: 3 mm, TA: 6 min 28 s). Coronal MR images were blindly studied before and after MIP post-processing; Friedman's test was used for statistical analysis (p < .05). ERCP showed 92 cases of choledocholithiasis, with the stones ranging .2 to 3.4 cm; MRC before MIP post-processing had 97.1% diagnostic accuracy, 97.8% sensitivity and 95.8% specificity. These values are significantly different from those obtained after MIP (91.4%, 86.9% and 95.8% respectively). In our experience, pre- and post-MIP post-processing MRC can be considered a reliable and accurate noninvasive technique to detect choledochal stones.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A new noninvasive technique, dynamic Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) during rapid infusion of paramagnetic contrast medium, has been recently developed for the study of neck vessels. This study was carried out to optimize technical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty healthy volunteers (10 men and 10 women; age range: 25 to 50 years) were examined with a 1.5 T MR unit equipped with fast imaging software and a dedicated coil. Dynamic MRA was performed using fast spoiled gradient recalled (fast SPGR) sequences acquired on the coronal plane 13 s after contrast medium injection. Imaging parameters were: Echo Time (TE): 1 ms, Repetition Time (TR): 8 ms, flip angle: 60 degrees, matrix 256 x 128, number of excitations: 1, field of view: 18 x 13 cm, number of partitions per slab: 28, slice thickness: 1 mm, acquisition time: 32 s. A dose of .2 mmol/kg of paramagnetic contrast medium was administered with an MR compatible automatic injector, at a speed rate of 1.5 ml/s. Angiographic images were postprocessed with the maximum intensity projection (MIP) and targeted MIP algorithms. RESULTS Using the above parameters and rapid contrast medium injection, the carotid arteries on the coronal plane (including the vessels from the proximal aspect of the common carotid arteries to the intracranial tract of the internal carotid arteries) in 18 cases. In the other two cases the tortuosity and the position of the carotid arteries on two different planes, prevented their complete visualization. The vertebral arteries were completely demonstrated in 50% of the investigated population. Partial or total overlapping of jugular veins did not affect the recognition of the carotid vessels in 10 cases, also with targeted MIP postprocessing. DISCUSSION The vascular semiology of dynamic gadolinium enhanced MRA seems to be closer to that of conventional angiography than of conventional MRA, likely due to the same modality of vessel depiction, based on contrast medium administration. Flow artifacts, the major pitfall of conventional MRA causing signal void and overestimation of stenosis grade, are not frequent in dynamic MRA. CONCLUSIONS Gadolinium enhanced dynamic MRA ensures panoramic and high resolution angiographic-like depiction of the neck vessels, providing rapid and excellent definition of vascular morphology. Thus dynamic MRA appears to be a substantial alternative to conventional MRA and conventional angiography.

Abstract
The acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL)-specific chromosome 15;17 translocation leads to the fusion of a newly identified putative transcription factor, PML, and the retinoic acid receptor alpha. We have characterized the structure of the PML genomic locus and preliminarily characterized its expression pattern. The PML locus spans a minimum of 35 kb and is subdivided into nine exons. The putative PML DNA binding site is encoded by exons 2 and 3. We isolated a large number of alternatively spliced PML transcripts that encode numerous PML isoforms. Two groups of isoforms were identified that differed either in their C-terminal region or in the length of their central region, but retained the putative DNA-binding and dimerization domains. RNAase protection experiments revealed that the different PML isoforms are equally expressed in established cell lines of different histological origin.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this paper was to evaluate the feasibility, morbidity, and reproductive performance of fertile women undergoing minilaparotomic myomectomy for large uterine myomas. METHODS Ninety-nine consecutive women with symptomatic myomas underwent myomectomy through a skin incision ≤8 cm. Operative, postoperative and reproductive data were prospectively collected. RESULTS Median (range) age and Body Mass Index (BMI) were 37 years (23-44) and 23 (18-43), respectively. Median (range) myoma diameter was 7 cm (4-20), and the median number of myomas removed was 1 (range 1-31). Myomas were intramural in 76 (76%) cases. Median incision length was 7 cm (range 4-13) and median duration of surgery was 70 min (range 40-180). Operative time and length of skin incision were not correlated with the progressive number of interventions. An incision larger than 8 cm was necessary in 7 (7%) patients and the length of incision was significantly correlated with the diameter of the largest myoma (P<0.01). The feasibility of minilaparotomy was significantly reduced when the diameter of the largest myoma was >12 cm (P<0.05). Operative time was significantly longer in patients having >1 myoma (P<0.05). Three (3%) patients underwent blood transfusion. Median (range) postoperative stay was 2 days (range 2-12). Fever occurred in 8 (8%) patients, and wound complications in 5 (5%). CONCLUSION Myomectomy by minilaparotomy is a feasible procedure in more than 90% of unselected patients with large symptomatic myomas. Feasibility is questionable when the myoma is >12 cm. This technique is a mini-invasive option to treat patients with large and multiple myomas.

Abstract
We previously showed that the proto-oncogene RON encodes the tyrosine kinase receptor for Macrophage Stimulating Protein (MSP), originally isolated as a chemotactic factor for peritoneal macrophages. To elucidate the biological role of MSP we studied the expression of the Ron receptor in vivo, and the response to the factor in vitro. RON specific transcripts were detectable in mouse liver from early embryonal life (day 12.5 p.c.) through adult life. Adrenal gland, spinal ganglia, skin, lung and--unexpectedly--ossification centers of developing mandible, clavicle and ribs were also positive at later stages (day 13.5-16.5 p.c.). From day 17.5 RON was expressed in the gut epithelium and in a specific area of the central nervous system, corresponding to the nucleus of the hypoglossus. In adult mouse tissues RON transcripts were observed in brain, adrenal glands, gastro-intestinal tract, testis and kidney. Epithelial, osteoclast-like and neuroendocrine cells express the Ron receptor and respond to MSP in vitro. In the neuroendocrine PC12 cell line, while NGF induced growth arrest and morphological differentiation, MSP behaved as a strong mitogen. These findings show that the Ron receptor and its ligand are involved in the development of epithelial tissues, bones, and neuroendocrine derivatives driving cells towards the proliferation program.
