Abstract
Individual BCL2 family members couple apoptosis regulation and cell cycle control in unique ways. Antiapoptotic BCL2 and BCL-x(L) are antiproliferative by facilitating G0. BAX is proapoptotic and accelerates S-phase progression. The dual functions in apoptosis and cell cycle are coordinately regulated by the multi-domain BCL2 family members (MCL-1) and suggest that survival is maintained at the expense of proliferation. The role of BH3-only molecules in cell cycle is more variable. BAD antagonizes both the cell cycle and antiapoptotic functions of BCL2 and BCL-x(L) through BH3 binding. BID has biochemically separable functions in apoptosis and S-phase checkpoint, determined by post-translational modification. p53-induced PUMA is known only to have apoptotic function. Inhibition of apoptosis is oncogenic, whereas promotion of cell cycle arrest is tumor suppressive. Paradoxically, selected BCL2 family members can be both oncogenic and tumor suppressive. Which of the dual functions predominates is lineage specific and context dependent.

Abstract
The sticking and scattering of O(2)Pt(111) has been studied by tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations based on an ab initio potential energy surface. We focus, in particular, on the sticking probability as a function of the angle of incidence and the energy and angular distributions in scattering. Our simulations provide an explanation for the seemingly paradox experimental findings that adsorption experiments suggest that the O(2)Pt(111) interaction potential should be strongly corrugated while scattering experiments indicate a rather small corrugation. The potential energy surface is indeed strongly corrugated which leads to a pronounced dependence of the sticking probability on the angle of incidence. The scattered O(2) molecules, however, experience a rather flat surface due to the fact that they are predominantly scattered at the repulsive tail of the potential.

Abstract
Matter under extreme conditions can be generated by a collision of a hypersonic cluster with a surface. The ultra-high-pressure interlude lasts only briefly from the impact until the cluster shatters. We discuss the theoretical characterization of the pressure using the virial theorem and develop a constrained molecular-dynamics procedure to compute it. The simulations show that for rare-gas clusters the pressures reach the megabar range. The contribution to the pressure from momentum transfer is comparable in magnitude and is of the same sign as that ("the internal pressure") due to repulsive interatomic forces. The scaling of the pressure with the reduced mechanical variables is derived and validated with reference to the simulations.

Abstract
Mitoxantrone (mitox) has been shown to be effective for secondary progressive (SP) and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this open trial was to evaluate the effects of combined mitox and methylprednisolone (MP) therapy on patients with primary progressive (PP)-MS or with SP-MS. We present here the results of an interim analysis done after the study had lasted 5 years. Sixty-five patients (20 with PP-MS and 45 with SP-MS) have been included so far. The treatment involved ten cycles of combined mitox and MP. The intervals between the individual cycles were systematically prolonged from 3 months initially to 12 months, so the complete treatment took a total of 57 months. Conclusion This interim analysis indicates that mitox combined with MP beneficially reduces the progression of disability in patients with PP-MS and SP-MS. Therefore, this therapy regimen can also be considered a feasible option for PP-MS.

Abstract
Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) type II is typically characterized by a decrease in platelet count to values between 20 and 120 x 10 (9)/L or a platelet count fall of greater than 50%. We report on a patient who developed a HIT syndrome, thrombosis of the vena cava, and fulminant pulmonary embolism during heparin treatment after cesarean section, without a significant decrease in platelet count. Lepirudin anticoagulation and ecarin clotting time (ECT) monitoring were used successfully during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck disorders are common, limit function, and are costly to individuals and society. Exercise therapy is a commonly used treatment for neck pain. The effectiveness of exercise therapy remains unclear. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness of exercise therapy to relieve pain, or improve function, disability, patient satisfaction, and global perceived effect in adults with mechanical neck disorders (MND). SEARCH STRATEGY Computerised bibliographic databases including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, MANTIS, CINAHL, and ICL were searched, without language restrictions, from their beginning up to March 2004, and reference lists of articles were scanned. SELECTION CRITERIA Selected studies were randomised [RCTs] or quasi-randomised trials and investigated the use of exercise therapy as a treatment in adults with MND with or without headache or radicular signs and symptoms. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers independently conducted citation identification, study selection, data abstraction, and methodological quality assessment. Using a random effects model, relative risk and standardized mean differences were calculated. The reasonableness of combining studies was assessed on clinical and statistical grounds. In the absence of heterogeneity, pooled effect measures were calculated. When trials were considered homogenous, results were summarised using a rating system of five levels of evidence. MAIN RESULTS Thirty-one trials were selected, 19% (van Tulder criteria) to 35% (Jadad scale) had high quality. There is limited evidence of benefit that acute range of motion (AROM) may reduce pain in acute MND (whiplash associated disorder (WAD)) in the short term. There is moderate evidence of benefit that neck strengthening exercises reduce pain, improve function and global perceived effect for chronic neck disorder with headache in the short and long term. There is unclear evidence regarding the impact of a stretching and strengthening program on pain, function and global perceived effect for MND. However, when this stretching and strengthening program focuses on the cervical or cervical and shoulder/thoracic region, there is moderate evidence of benefit on pain in chronic MND [pooled SMD -0.42 (95%CI: -0.83 to -0.01)] and neck disorder plus headache, in the short and long term. There is strong evidence of benefit favouring a multimodal care approach of exercise combined with mobilisation or manipulation for subacute and chronic MND with or without headache, in the short and long term. A program of eye fixation or proprioception exercises imbedded in a more complete program shows moderate evidence of benefit for pain [pooled SMD -0.72 (95% CI:-1.12 to -0.32)], function, and global perceived for chronic MND in the short term, and on pain and function for acute and subacute MND with headache or WAD in the long term. There is limited evidence of benefit on pain relief in the short term for a home mobilisation program with other physical modalities over a program of rest then gradual mobilisation for acute MND or WAD. There was evidence of no difference between the different exercise approaches. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The evidence summarised in this systematic review indicates that specific exercises may be effective for the treatment of acute and chronic MND, with or without headache. To be of benefit, a stretching and strengthening exercise program should concentrate on the musculature of the cervical, shoulder-thoracic area, or both. A multimodal care approach of exercise, combined with mobilisation or manipulation for subacute and chronic MND with or without headache, reduced pain, improved function, and global perceived effect in the short and long term. The relative benefit of other treatments (such as physical modalities) compared with exercise or between different exercise programs needs to be explored. The quality of future trials should improve through more effective 'blinding' procedures and better control of compliance and co-intervention. Phase II trials would help identify the most effective treatment characteristics and dosages.

SEARCH STRATEGY Computer-assisted searches of bibliographic databases: CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, MANTIS, CINAHL, and ICL, without language restrictions, from their beginning to March 2003. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised or controlled clinical trials with quasi-randomisation (alternate allocation, case record numbers, dates of birth, etc.), in any language, investigating the effects of electrotherapy as a treatment for MND. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS At least two authors independently conducted citation identification, study selection, data abstraction, and methodological quality assessment. Using a random-effects model, relative risk, and standardized mean differences were calculated. The reasonableness of combining studies was assessed on clinical and statistical grounds. Due to heterogeneity, pooled effect measures were not calculated. MAIN RESULTS Fourteen comparisons (525 people with MND), in 11 publications, were included in this review. The analysis was limited by underpowered low quality trials, paucity of literature, and heterogeneity of treatment subtypes. The results for the electrotherapy subtypes are: Limited evidence of benefit: low or high frequency pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) compared to placebo, provides immediate post treatment pain relief only for chronic MND, acute whiplash (WAD) Unclear or conflicting evidence: direct and modulated Galvanic current compared to other treatments for pain in acute, subacute, chronic occipital headache iontophoresis compared to other treatments for pain, RTW, and self-assessment of overall outcome in acute, subacute WAD TENS compared to placebo for pain in acute WAD, chronic MND PEMF compared to placebo for medium or long term effect on pain, patient assessment of improvement, ADL in acute WAD, chronic MND Limited evidence of no benefit: diadynamic current compared to placebo for reduction of trigger point tenderness in chronic MND with radicular findings, cervicogenic headache permanent magnets compared to a placebo for pain in chronic MND electric muscle stimulation compared to a sham control for pain in chronic MND. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We can not make any definitive statements on electrotherapy for MND. The current evidence on Galvanic current (direct or pulsed), iontophoresis, TENS, EMS, PEMF and permanent magnets is either lacking, limited, or conflicting. Possible new trials on these interventions should have larger patient samples and include more precise standardization and description of all treatment characteristics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Medicinal therapies and injections are commonly recommended for neck pain, yet controversy persists over their effectiveness. OBJECTIVES To determine the effect of medicines and injections on pain, function/disability, patient satisfaction and range of motion in participants with mechanical neck disorders (MND). SEARCH STRATEGY We searched CENTRAL (Issue 4, 2002), and MEDLINE, EMBASE, MANTIS, CINHAL from their start to March 2003. We scrutinized reference lists for other trials. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomized controlled trials with adults with MND, with or without associated headache or radicular findings. We considered medicinal and injection therapies, regardless of route of administration. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently selected articles, abstracted data and assessed methodological quality using the Jadad criteria. Consensus was used to resolve disagreements. When clinical heterogeneity was absent, we combined studies using random-effects meta-analysis models. MAIN RESULTS We found 32 trials that examined the effects of oral NSAIDs, psychotropic agents, injections of steroids, and anaesthetic agents. Overall, methodological quality had a mean of 3.2/5 on the Jadad Scale. For acute whiplash, administering intravenous methylprednisolone within eight hours reduced pain at one week, and sick leave but not pain at six months compared to placebo. For chronic MND at short-term follow-up, intramuscular injection of lidocaine was superior to placebo or dry needling, but similar to ultrasound. In chronic MND with radicular findings, epidural methylprednisolone and lidocaine reduced neck pain and improved function at one-year follow-up compared to the intramuscular route. In subacute/chronic MND, we found conflicting evidence of pain reduction for oral psychotropic agents compared to placebo or control. Single trials of eperison hydrochloride and tetrazepam showed positive results. Results for cyclobenzaprine were mixed. Diazepam did not show benefit. Other treatments including NSAIDS and nerve blocks had unclear or limited evidence of benefit. In participants with chronic MND with or without radicular findings or headache, there was moderate evidence from five high quality trials showing that Botox A intramuscular injections were not better than saline in improving pain (pooled SMD: -0.39 (95%CI: -1.25 to 0.47), disability or global perceived effect. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Intra-muscular injection of lidocaine for chronic MND and intravenous injection of methylprednisolone for acute whiplash were effective treatments. There was limited evidence of effectiveness of epidural injection of methylprednisolone and lidocaine for chronic MND with radicular findings. Oral psychotropic agents had mixed results. There was moderate evidence that Botox A intramuscular injections for chronic MND were no better than saline. Other medications, including NSAIDs, had contradictory or limited evidence of effectiveness.

Abstract
There is an increasing trend to use greywater for irrigation in households. This is partly due to the notion that greywater is of better quality than wastewater and therefore does not need extensive treatment beyond addressing public health issues. The aim of the study was to evaluate the environmental impact and health risks associated with the use of greywater for irrigation on a small private farm. Over a three-year period, each of three plots on a farm was irrigated with either freshwater, fertilized water, or greywater. Irrigation water and soil from the plots were analyzed for a wide range of chemical and microbial variables. Results suggest that greywater may be of similar quality to wastewater in several parameters such as BOD and faecal coliforms. For some other variables such as boron and surfactants, greywater may even be of worse quality than wastewater. Long-term irrigation of arid loess soil with greywater may result in accumulation of salts, surfactants and boron in the soil, causing changes in soil properties and toxicity to plants. Faecal coliforms did not survive in the soil. Treating greywater before using it for irrigation is recommended, even in places where this is not a requirement.

Abstract
Greywater is all domestic wastewater excluding toilet effluents. Detergents contain surfactants, which account for the highest concentration of organic chemicals in average domestic wastewater. Accumulation of surfactants in greywater-irrigated soils was determined in three household gardens. The effect of surfactants on capillary rise in loess and sand was then tested in the range of concentrations found in the garden soils. The capillary rise of freshwater in sieved oven-dried soil mixed with different concentrations of laundry detergent solution (10% w/w moisture content) was determined. In a second setup, the soil was mixed with freshwater and the rising solution contained different concentrations of detergent solution. The introduction of laundry solution to the soils caused a significant decrease in the capillary rise over the range of concentrations that is found in greywater-irrigated soils. The effect was more noticeable in the sand than in the loess. Interestingly, in the second setup, the capillary rise of the laundry solutions in the sand was almost similar to that of freshwater, whereas in the loess the capillary rise was significantly reduced. It is suggested that accumulation of surfactants in the soil might form water repellent soils that have a significant effect on agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
We have demonstrated the exchange of sifted quantum cryptographic key over a 730 meter free-space link at rates of up to 1.0 Mbps, two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported results. A classical channel at 1550 nm operates in parallel with a quantum channel at 845 nm. Clock recovery techniques on the classical channel at 1.25 Gbps enable quantum transmission at up to the clock rate. System performance is currently limited by the timing resolution of our silicon avalanche photodiode detectors. With improved detector resolution, our technique will yield another order of magnitude increase in performance, with existing technology.

We present the results of a search for point sources of high-energy neutrinos in the northern hemisphere using AMANDA-II data collected in the year 2000. Included are flux limits on several active-galactic-nuclei blazars, microquasars, magnetars, and other candidate neutrino sources. A search for excesses above a random background of cosmic-ray-induced atmospheric neutrinos and misreconstructed downgoing cosmic-ray muons reveals no statistically significant neutrino point sources. We show that AMANDA-II has achieved the sensitivity required to probe known TeV gamma-ray sources such as the blazar Markarian 501 in its 1997 flaring state at a level where neutrino and gamma-ray fluxes are equal.

Abstract
To elucidate the mechanisms of gravity susception that operate in the sporangiophore of Phycomyces blakesleeanus, we characterized the function and topography of a large apical complex of lipid globules. Stage-1 sporangiophores (without sporangium) possess a roughly spherical complex of 100-200 large lipid globules whose center is localized 110 microm below the apex. The complex of lipid globules (CLG) is rather stable and is kept in place by positioning forces that resist centrifugal accelerations of up to 150 g. The lipid globules possess an average diameter of 2 to 2.5 microm and a density of 0.791 g cm(-3), which is below that of typical plant oleosomes. The potential energy which is generated by the buoyancy of a CLG of 100 globules is in the order of 10(-17) to 10(-16) J, which is 4 to 5 orders of magnitude above thermal noise. The formation of lipid globules can be suppressed by raising stage-1 sporangiophores for 24 hs at 5 degrees C. Sporangiophores with a reduced number of lipid globules display gravitropic bending angles that are 3 to 4 times smaller than those of sporangiophores with the normal number of lipid globules. The results suggest that the lipid globules function as gravisusceptors of Phycomyces and that buoyancy is the physical principle for their mode of action. The globules contain beta-carotene and two distinct fluorescing pigments that are, however, dispensable for graviperception.
