Abstract
Synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data are used to determine the core electron deformation of diamond. Core shell contraction inherently linked to covalent bond formation is observed in close correspondence with theoretical predictions. Accordingly, a precise and physically sound reconstruction of the electron density in diamond necessitates the use of an extended multipolar model, which abandons the assumption of an inert core. The present investigation is facilitated by negligible model bias in the extraction of structure factors, which is accomplished by simultaneous multipolar and Rietveld refinement accurately determining an atomic displacement parameter (ADP) of 0.00181 (1) Å(2). The deconvolution of thermal motion is a critical step in experimental core electron polarization studies, and for diamond it is imperative to exploit the monatomic crystal structure by implementing Wilson plots in determination of the ADP. This empowers the electron-density analysis to precisely administer both the deconvolution of thermal motion and the employment of the extended multipolar model on an experimental basis.

Abstract
A combined experimental and theoretical study of doping individual Fe atoms into Bi(2)Se(3) is presented. It is shown through a scanning tunneling microscopy study that single Fe atoms initially located at hollow sites on top of the surface (adatoms) can be incorporated into subsurface layers by thermally activated diffusion. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with ab initio calculations suggest that the doping behavior changes from electron donation for the Fe adatom to neutral or electron acceptance for Fe incorporated into substitutional Bi sites. According to first principles calculations within density functional theory, these Fe substitutional impurities retain a large magnetic moment, thus presenting an alternative scheme for magnetically doping the topological surface state. For both types of Fe doping, we see no indication of a gap at the Dirac point.

Abstract
A method is presented and applied, capable of retrieving form-free particle size distributions complete with uncertainties from small-angle scattering patterns. Special attention is paid to particle observability in the scattering patterns, accurate estimation of data uncertainty and the effect of uncertainty on the resulting size distribution statistics. Monte Carlo (MC) methods, based on random updates and the trial-and-error principle, are well suited to retrieve form-free particle size distributions from small-angle scattering patterns of non-interacting low-concentration scatterers such as particles in solution or precipitates in metals. Improvements are presented to existing MC methods, such as a non-ambiguous convergence criterion, nonlinear scaling of contributions to match their observability in a scattering measurement, and a method for estimating the minimum visibility threshold and uncertainties on the resulting size distributions.

Abstract
Mixed-valence trinuclear carboxylates, [M(3)O(O(2)CR)(6)L(3)] (M = metal, L = terminal ligand), have small differences in potential energy between the configurations M(II)M(III)M(III)⇔M(III)M(II)M(III)⇔M(III)M(III)M(II), which means that small external changes can have large structural effects, owing to the differences in coordination geometry between M(2+) and M(3+) sites (e.g., about 0.2 Å for Fe-O bond lengths). It is well-established that the electron transfer (ET) between the metal sites in these mixed-valence molecules is strongly dependent on temperature and on the specific crystal environment; however, herein, for the first time, we examine the effect of pressure on the electron transfer. Based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data that were measured at 15, 90, 100, 110, 130, 160, and 298 K on three different crystals, we first unexpectedly found that our batch of Fe(3)O (O(2)CC(CH(3))(3))(6)(C(5)H(5)N)(3) (1) exhibited a different temperature dependence of the ET process than previous studies of compound 1 have shown. We observed a phase transition at around 130 K that was related to complete valence trapping and Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that this phase transition was governed by a subtle competition between C-H⋅⋅⋅π and π⋅⋅⋅π intermolecular interactions. Subsequent high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction at pressures of 0.15, 0.35, 0.45, 0.74, and 0.96 GPa revealed that it was not possible to trigger the phase transition (i.e., valence trapping) by a reduction of the unit-cell volume, owing to this external pressure. We conclude that modulation of the ET process requires anisotropic changes in the intermolecular interactions, which occur when various directional chemical bonds are affected differently by changes in temperature, but not by the application of pressure.

Abstract
The implementation of the van der Pauw (VDP) technique for combined high temperature measurement of the electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient is described. The VDP method is convenient for use since it accepts sample geometries compatible with other measurements. The technique is simple to use and can be used with samples showing a broad range of shapes and physical properties, from near insulators to metals. Three instruments utilizing the VDP method for measurement of heavily doped semiconductors, such as thermoelectrics, are discussed.

Abstract
Rubidium adsorption on the surface of the topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3) is found to induce a strong downward band bending, leading to the appearance of a quantum-confined two-dimensional electron gas state (2DEG) in the conduction band. The 2DEG shows a strong Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting, and it has previously been pointed out that this has relevance to nanoscale spintronics devices. The adsorption of Rb atoms, on the other hand, renders the surface very reactive, and exposure to oxygen leads to a rapid degrading of the 2DEG. We show that intercalating the Rb atoms, presumably into the van der Waals gaps in the quintuple layer structure of Bi(2)Se(3), drastically reduces the surface reactivity while not affecting the promising electronic structure. The intercalation process is observed above room temperature and accelerated with increasing initial Rb coverage, an effect that is ascribed to the Coulomb interaction between the charged Rb ions. Coulomb repulsion is also thought to be responsible for a uniform distribution of Rb on the surface.

Abstract
The robustness of the gapless topological surface state hosted by a 3D topological insulator against perturbations of magnetic origin has been the focus of recent investigations. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of Fe impurities on the prototypical 3D topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3) using local low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy and integral x-ray magnetic circular dichroism techniques. Single Fe adatoms on the Bi(2)Se(3) surface, in the coverage range ≈ 1% of a monolayer, are heavily relaxed into the surface and exhibit a magnetic easy axis within the surface plane, contrary to what was assumed in recent investigations on the supposed opening of a gap. Using ab initio approaches, we demonstrate that an in-plane easy axis arises from the combination of the crystal field and dynamic hybridization effects.

Abstract
Zinc antimonide thin films with high thermoelectric performance are produced by a simple sputtering method. The phase-pure Zn(4)Sb(3) and ZnSb thin films fulfill the key requirements for commercial TE power generation: cheap elements, cheap fabrication method, high performance and thermal stability. In addition, two completely new meta-stable crystalline phases of zinc antimonide have been discovered.
