Gated phase-modulation approach to fiber-optic gyroscope with linearized scale factor

A phase-modulation approach to closed-loop fiber-optic gyroscopes is described that uses an all-fiber gyroscope, which can provide a linearized scale factor. Preliminary experimental results with manual closing of the feedback loop show good linearity in the scale factor. This approach has, in theory, an inherent suppression of source-wave-length dependence of the scale factor.

Gated phase-modulation feedback approach to fiber-optic gyroscopes

A new approach to closed-loop operation of an all-fiber-optic gyroscope using phase modulation and signal gating is described. This approach provides simplicity of implementation and the capability of wide dynamic range with an approximately linear scale factor. Experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations.

Analysis and measurement of birefringence in single-mode fibers using the backscattering method

The local parameters of linear, circular, and elliptical birefringence of backscattered light along a single-mode fiber are analyzed, and the twist-bending-induced elliptical birefringence in an extremely low birefringent single-mode fiber is measured using the backscattering method. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. For a 130-microm-diameter fiber, twisted by 133 degrees /m and wound around a drum of 15-cm radius, the induced elliptical birefringence is |?| = 18 degrees /m at lambda = 904 nm.
