Abstract
The tumor suppressor protein, p53 is one of the most important cellular defences against malignant transformation. In response to cellular stressors p53 can induce apoptosis, cell cycle arrest or senescence as well as aid in DNA repair. Which p53 function is required for tumor suppression is unclear. The proline-rich domain (PRD) of p53 (residues 58-101) has been reported to be essential for the induction of apoptosis. To determine the importance of the PRD in tumor suppression in vivo we previously generated a mouse containing a 33-amino-acid deletion (residues 55-88) in p53 (mΔpro). We showed that mΔpro mice are protected from T-cell tumors but not late-onset B-cell tumors. Here, we characterize the functionality of the PRD and show that it is important for mediating the p53 response to DNA damage induced by γ-radiation, but not the p53-mediated responses to Ha-Ras expression or oxidative stress. We conclude that the PRD is important for receiving incoming activating signals. Failure of PRD mutants to respond to the activating signaling produced by DNA damage leads to impaired downstream signaling, accumulation of mutations, which potentially leads to late-onset tumors.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the levels of metals (Ca, K, Na, Mg) and trace metals (Ni, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cd) in two fish species (gilthead bream [Sparus aurata] and sea bass [Dicentrarchus labrax]) collected from fish farms located along the coast of Tenerife Island. Ca, K, Na, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, whereas Pb, Cd, and Ni were determined using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Mean Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn contents were 3.09, 0.59, 0.18, and 8.11 mg/kg (wet weight) in S. aurata and 3.20, 0.76, 0.24, and 10.11 mg/kg (wet weight) in D. labrax, respectively. In D. labrax, Ca, K, Na, and Mg levels were 1,955, 2,787, 699.7, and 279.2 mg/kg (wet weight), respectively; in S. aurata, they were 934.7, 3,515, 532.8, and 262.8 mg/kg (wet weight), respectively. The Pb level in S. aurata was 7.28 ± 3.64 μg/kg (wet weight) and, in D. labrax, 4.42 ± 1.56 μg/kg (wet weight). Mean Cd concentrations were 3.33 ± 3.93 and 1.36 ± 1.53 μg/kg (wet weight) for D. labrax and S. aurata, respectively. All Pb and Cd levels measured were well below the accepted European Commission limits, 300 and 50 μg/kg for lead and cadmium, respectively.

Abstract
Variation in temperature and food availability in larval habitats can influence the abundance, body size, and vector competence of the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Although increased temperature has energetic costs for growing larvae, how food resources influence the developmental response of this mosquito species to thermal conditions is unknown. We explored how rearing temperature and food affect allometric scaling between wing size and epidermal cell size in Ae. aegypti. Mosquitoes were reared at 22 and 28 degrees C across a gradient of field-collected detritus designed to simulate commonly observed natural larval food resources. Overall, reduced temperature and increased food level increased wing size, but only temperature affected cell size. Females fed the least food had the longest time to maturation, and their increases in wing size induced by cold temperature were associated with larger, rather than more, cells. By contrast, males fed the most food had the shortest time to maturation, and their increases in wing size induced by cold temperature were associated with more, rather than larger, cells. Therefore, food levels can alter the underlying physiological mechanisms generating temperature-size patterns in mosquitoes, suggesting that the control of development is sensitive to the combination of nutrient and thermal conditions, rather than each independently. Conditions prolonging development time may favor increased cell division over growth. We suggest that understanding the effects of climate change on Ae. aegypti vectorial capacity requires an improved knowledge of how water temperature interacts with limited food resources and competition in aquatic container habitats.

Abstract
We propose that the apoptotic function of p53 has an important role in B-cell homeostasis, which is important for the prevention of B-cell lymphomas. We created a mouse model (mDeltapro) that lacked residues 58-88 of the proline-rich domain of p53. mDeltapro is defective for apoptosis, but is able to arrest cell-cycle progression in hematopoietic tissues. mDeltapro develops late-onset B-cell lymphoma, but not the thymic T-cell tumors found in p53-null mice. Interestingly, mDeltapro lymphomas comprised incorrectly differentiated B cells. B-cell irregularities were also detected in mDeltapro before tumor onset, in which aged mice showed an increased population of inappropriately differentiated B cells in the bone marrow and spleen. We predict that by keeping B-cell populations in check, p53-dependent apoptosis prevents irregular B cells from eventuating in lymphomas.

Abstract
This study analyzed the content of gamma-emitting radionuclides in fish farmed on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). The fish species included in this study were sea bass, gilthead bream, and rainbow trout. The first two species are produced in offshore enclosures, while the third is produced in a freshwater fish farm. All measurements were performed using two high-purity germanium gamma-ray detectors. The content of gamma-emitting radionuclides in the fodder used to feed the different species of farmed fish studied was also determined. The following nuclides were often detected in the analyzed samples: 137Cs, 40K, 235U, 228Ac, 214Bi, 208Tl, 212Pb, and 214Pb. As a complement to this analysis, 210Po concentrations in two fish samples were determined by alpha spectrometry. The nuclide presenting the highest concentration was, as expected, the naturally occurring 40K, with an average concentration of 0.13 +/- 0.01 Bq/g (wet weight) (Bq/gww) in gilthead bream and sea bass and 0.12 +/- 0.01 Bq/gww in rainbow trout. The 235U concentrations determined in the same fish species were 0.6 +/- 0.5, 0.8 +/- 0.7, and 1.6 +/- 1.0 mBq/gww, respectively. This nuclide is seldom reported in fish samples. The concentrations of 137Cs (the only artificial nuclide determined in this study) in gilthead bream and sea bass were 0.026 +/- 0.006 and 0.044 +/- 0.01 mBq/gww, respectively. In addition to the radiometric analysis, the contribution of the analyzed nuclides to the effective dose from the mean daily intake of the fish was calculated. The calculated contribution, in terms of dose per person, produced by intake of the analyzed fish was 0.8 microSv/year. This value does not represent a significant risk to the local population.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer (PC) represents one of the greatest oncological challenges of our century, due to its high mortality and incidence. A group of Spanish experts in PC treatment reviewed data available on different therapeutic combinations and established consensus on what would be the best strategy in PC management, depending on the stage of the disease. Surgery with complete resection may produce 5-year survival rates of 18-24%, but definitive control is still precarious. In the absence of consensus, the best evidence suggests that adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine for 6 months using the CONKO-001 regime is the treatment of choice after resection of PC for patients with acceptable functional status. This group recommends chemoradiotherapy (CT-RT) in patients with factors for poor loco-regional prognosis. However, chemotherapy is an option for the treatment of locally advanced PC in patients with good general status and in the absence of metastatic disease the recommended treatment is CT-RT followed by gemcitabine-based chemotherapy. A period of chemotherapy followed by consolidation CT-RT may be appropriate, as it allows selection of patients with locally advanced disease who may benefit most from combined treatment. Erlotinib combined with gemcitabine shows significant survival improvement in PC and must be considered an option in the first-line treatment of advanced and metastatic PC. The gemcitabine-erlotinib combination is proposed as the standard treatment for metastatic PC in patients with PS=/>2. In patients with PS<2, gemcitabine-erlotinib is recommended as the first-line treatment option, supported by a maximum degree of evidence, without ruling out other options, such as gemcitabine-oxaliplatin, gemcitabine-capecitabine or gemcitabine alone.
