Abstract
Hybrid metallodielectric systems where dielectric components are combined with metals supporting surface plasmons are able to spatially redistribute the electromagnetic field intensity within its volume through hybrid photonic-plasmonic modes. While most of the work done recently in this kind of systems has been focused on the way such redistribution takes place and how light couples to or is emitted from such samples, the way light propagation takes place has not been studied in depth. Here we consider light propagation in hybrid systems fabricated by self-assembly methods measuring their equifrequency surfaces both in reflection and emission configurations. Comparing spectroscopic measurements with equifrequency surfaces provides a deeper insight into the way light propagates in these structures, showing the possibilities they may present for several applications.

Abstract
Population dynamics of individuals undergoing birth and death and diffusing by short- or long-range two-dimensional spatial excursions (Gaussian jumps or Lévy flights) is studied. Competitive interactions are considered in a global case, in which birth and death rates are influenced by all individuals in the system, and in a nonlocal but finite-range case in which interaction affects individuals in a neighborhood (we also address the noninteracting case). In the global case one single or few-cluster configurations are achieved with the spatial distribution of the bugs tied to the type of diffusion. In the Lévy case long tails appear for some properties characterizing the shape and dynamics of clusters. Under nonlocal finite-range interactions periodic patterns appear with periodicity set by the interaction range. This length acts as a cutoff limiting the influence of the long Lévy jumps, so that spatial configurations under the two types of diffusion become more similar. By dividing initially everyone into different families and following their descent it is possible to show that mixing of families and their competition is greatly influenced by the spatial dynamics.

Abstract
Eutetranychus orientalis has become an important pest of the ornamental tree Melia azedarach in the city of Seville (Spain). Trees suffer total defoliation at the end of summer. Studies were conducted in a regular plantation of this tree in the Miraflores Park in 2008 and 2009, to determine the arthropod faunal composition, with particular interest in the possible natural enemies of E. orientalis. Eutetranychus orientalis accounted for 98.3% of the arthropods found on the leaflets. Two species of phytoseiids were found, Euseius scutalis and Euseius stipulatus, but they only represented 0.2% of the arthropods. The most abundant insect was the predator thrips Scolothrips longicornis, which accounted for 0.9% of the arthropods found. The population of E. orientalis reached two peaks in 2008, with 325 individuals per leaflet in August, and 100 individuals per leaflet in November. Scolothrips longicornis densities closely followed E. orientalis, and predation was observed on various mite instars. Phytoseiids did not show such a response to the E. orientalis densities. Eutetranychus orientalis was more abundant in the exterior part of the plantation. No differences of arthropod densities were found between the various orientations in the plantation (north vs. south, east vs. west), although E. orientalis densities were different between rows. Distribution of E. orientalis population was highly aggregative, that of S. longicornis population was less aggregative, whereas the phytoseiid population showed a random distribution.

Assessment of three methods for multilocus fragment typing of Cryptosporidium parvum from domestic ruminants in north west Spain. Vet Parasitol 2011; 186:188-95. Abstract
The performance of three different methods, capillary electrophoresis (CE), high resolution slab-gel electrophoresis and sequencing, for PCR fragment size analysis of two Cryptosporidium parvum microsatellite regions, ML1 and ML2, was investigated by analysing 27 isolates from calves and 14 from lambs. To assess genetic variability of this protozoan in domestic ruminants in north west Spain, results were combined with sequence analysis of the 60 kDa glycoprotein (GP60) gene creating a multilocus type and analysed by farm and host species. CE showed greater overall typability (T), discriminatory power and ease of use than slab-gel electrophoresis and sequencing which were both affected by PCR stutter, especially at ML2. CE fragment sizes were consistently 4 bp longer compared to sequencing which is considered the gold standard for allele sizing but which gave the lowest typability; CE sizes were therefore adjusted. Only three alleles were identified at the ML1 locus (ML1-238, ML1-229 and ML1-226). The ML2 locus was more polymorphic and eight alleles were found (ML2-235, ML2-233, ML2-231, ML2-229, ML2-227, ML2-225, ML2-201 and ML2-176). Adjusted ML1 and ML2 CE fragment sizes were combined with GP60 subtype for 37 of the 41 C. parvum isolates which were typable at all three loci (T=0.90): nine multilocus types (MLTs) were identified. The discriminatory power of the 3-locus typing method was 0.83. Greater genetic variability was observed in calf isolates (7 MLTs) than in those from lambs (4 MLTs) although more calf isolates were studied. The most common MLT in cattle was MLT1 (ML1-238, ML2-231, GP60 subtype IIaA15G2R1), while MLT3 (ML1-238, ML2-227, GP60 IIaA16G3R1) was predominant in lambs. Our findings demonstrate that high discrimination can be achieved by means of multilocus typing. CE appears to be an economic and rapid option for performing microsatellite fragment size analysis offering good typability, discrimination and ease of use but may require calibration to sequenced standards.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine Visna/Maedi virus (VMV) seroprevalence and risk factors in semi-intensive lamb-producing flocks as a prelude to establishing a monitoring program in northwestern (NW) Spain. A total of 15,155 serum samples were taken from 78 commercial flocks and were submitted to an indirect VMV ELISA. Association between potential risk factors and seroprevalence at the flock level was assessed using a multivariable logistic regression model. A Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) model and Exhaustive Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) were used to determine the seropositivity against VMV at the individual animal level. Individual seropositivity was 24.8% while 52.6% of the flocks examined had a true seroprevalence ≥1%. Flock size and introduction of new animals in the flock were significantly associated with seropositivity at the flock level. Flock size, sheep-goat contact, type of housing of lambs prior to weaning and age were significantly associated with individual VMV seropositivity. Confinement of lambs in preweaning lamb groups and high sheep-goat contact, regardless of the low number of goats per flock, were risk factors associated with individual VMV seropositivity, suggesting that these two factors are crucial for VMV control in semi-intensive lamb-producing flocks. These factors should be considered for developing more efficient strategies that will reduce the rate of VMV transmission.

Abstract
During a histological survey of razor clam Ensis arcuatus (Jeffreys, 1865) from Galicia (NW Spain), basophilic inclusion bodies were observed in epithelial cells of the digestive gland. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the intranuclear position of these inclusions containing viral particles with icosahedral symmetry. Size and symmetry of these unenveloped virus particles suggest similarities to the families Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae which have been described as causing a viral gametocytic hypertrophy in oysters Crassostrea virginica and C. gigas. This is the first report of viral particles in E. arcuatus.

Abstract
During the processing of dry-cured meat products, sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar proteins undergo proteolysis, which has a marked effect on product flavor. Microbial proteolytic activity is due to the action of mostly lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and to a lesser extent micrococci. The proteolytic capacity of molds in various meat products is of interest to meat processors in the Mediterranean area. Eleven LAB and mold strains from different commercial origins were tested for proteolytic activity against pork myosin, with a view to possible use of these strains as starter cultures for Iberian dry-cured ham. Proteolytic activity was tested by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The LAB strains with the highest proteolytic activity were Lactobacillus plantarum (L115), Pediococcus pentosaceus (Saga P TM), and Lactobacillus acidophilus (FARGO 606 TM). The best fungal candidate was Penicillium nalgiovense LEM 50I followed by Penicillium digitatum, Debaryomyces hansenii, and Penicillium chrysogenum.

Abstract
High-permittivity dielectric particles with resonant magnetic properties are being explored as constitutive elements of new metamaterials and devices. Magnetic properties of low-loss dielectric nanoparticles in the visible or infrared are not expected due to intrinsic low refractive index of optical media in these regimes. Here we analyze the dipolar electric and magnetic response of lossless dielectric spheres made of moderate permittivity materials. For low material refractive index (<∼3) there are no sharp resonances due to strong overlapping between different multipole contributions. However, we find that Silicon particles with index of refraction∼3.5 and radius∼200 nm present strong electric and magnetic dipolar resonances in telecom and near-infrared frequencies, (i.e. at wavelengths≈1.2-2 mm) without spectral overlap with quadrupolar and higher order resonances. The light scattered by these Si particles can then be perfectly described by dipolar electric and magnetic fields.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) using a mini-incision has been used progressively to decrease morbidity, achieve prompt patient recovery without an increased risk and shorten the hospital stay. However, the advantages and probable complications of these approaches are not clear. The objective of this paper is to compare the preliminary perioperative results of two groups of patients undergoing THA, one using the standard approach and the second one with a mini-incision. MATERIAL AND METHODS 170 patients underwent surgery; they were divided into two groups. In group I (GI) patients an anterolateral mini-incision was performed, and in group II (GII) patients a standard Watson-Jones incision was used. Mean incision length was 8 cm in GI and 20 cm in GII. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found between both groups in the clinical and radiographic results and in the complications; however, a significant difference was found in the need for transfusions, wound size and hospital stay. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that primary THA with a mini-incision was a safe procedure that reduced the operative time without increasing the complications.

Abstract
During the 2003-2005 hunting seasons, a total of 120 Cervidae, including 39 red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) and 81 fallow deer (Dama dama), were examined for subcutaneous myiasis. Animals were shot from January to June in southern Spain. Specific antibodies against Hypodermatinae (Diptera: Oestridae) were detected by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) using a crude larval extract (CLE) and a purified antigen [hypodermin C (HC)] obtained from first instars of Hypoderma lineatum (De Villers) (Diptera: Oestridae). Hypoderma actaeon Brauer was the only species detected in this study, which represents the first confirmation of this species in fallow deer from Spain. The overall prevalence of animals presenting subcutaneous larvae (14.2%) was considerably lower than the prevalences determined by iELISA with CLE (43.3%) and HC (40.0%). Red deer showed a higher prevalence of Hypoderma than fallow deer. The concordance between larval examination during the hunting season and iELISA using both antigens was low, whereas the concordance between the CLE and HC ELISAs was good. Larval antigens obtained from H. lineatum constitute a good tool for the diagnosis of H. actaeon in Cervidae, especially when the hunting season does not coincide with the maximum presence of larvae on the back.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the immediate effects of diacutaneous fibrolysis on pain and mobility in patients suffering from painful shoulder, and to assess the ability of the placebo technique to blind participants to group allocation. DESIGN A double-blind before-after randomized placebo-controlled pilot study. SETTING Two public centres of Primary Health Care of the Spanish National Health System. PARTICIPANTS Fifty patients (29 women, 21 men) with a diagnosis of painful shoulder of subacromial origin were included. INTERVENTION Participants were randomly allocated to one of two groups. The intervention group (N = 25) was actually treated with diacutaneous fibrolysis, while the placebo group (N = 25) was treated with placebo diacutaneous fibrolysis. MEASUREMENTS Active range of motion (flexion, abduction, extension, external and internal rotation) and pain intensity in the hand-behind-back position were measured. Participants were also asked about their perception in terms of comfort of the technique and results obtained. RESULTS Between-groups differences were significant in flexion (mean 11.4 degrees; 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.7-17.1), abduction (mean 7.2 degrees; 95% CI 2.0-12.5) and internal rotation movements (mean 3.1 cm; 95% CI 0.1-6.1). There were no significant differences between groups in pain intensity, extension or external rotation movements. The placebo technique showed its ability to blind participants to group allocation. None of the participants suffered any adverse effects from diacutaneous fibrolysis. CONCLUSION Diacutaneous fibrolysis may be an effective and safe therapeutic option to improve active range of motion in patients suffering from painful shoulder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Bipolar disorder (BP) is a severe psychiatric illness, characterised by alternating episodes of depression and mania, which ranks among the top ten causes of morbidity and life-long disability world-wide. We have previously performed a whole-genome linkage scan on 6 pedigrees segregating severe BP from the well-characterised population isolate of Antioquia, Colombia. We recently collected genotypes for the same set of 382 autosomal microsatellite markers in 9 additional Antioquian BP pedigrees. Here, we report the analysis of the combined pedigree set. METHODS Linkage analysis using both parametric and nonparametric approaches was conducted for 3 different diagnostic models: severe BP only (BPI); mood disorders (BPI, BPII and major depression); and psychosis (operationally defined by the occurrence of at least 1 episode of hallucinations and/or delusions). RESULTS AND CONCLUSION For BPI only, the most interesting result was obtained for chromosome 7p21.1-p22.2 under a recessive model of inheritance (heterogeneity LOD score = 2.80), a region that had previously been linked to BP in a study on Portuguese Island families. For both BPI and mood disorders, nonparametric analyses identified a locus on chromosome 12ct-q14 (nonparametric linkage = 2.55 and 2.35, respectively). This locus has not previously been reported as a candidate region for BP. Additional candidate regions were found on chromosomes 1p22-31 (mood disorders) and 21q21-22 (BPI), 2 loci that have repeatedly been implicated in BP susceptibility. Linkage analysis of psychosis as a phenotype identified candidate regions on chromosomes 2q24-31 and 16p12-q12. The finding on chromosome 16p is noteworthy because the same locus has been implicated by genome-wide association analyses of BP.
