Abstract
SUMMARY Physical exercise benefits bone structure and mineralization, especially in children. Immediately following high-impact exercise, PTH increased and returned to resting values within 24 h in both groups, while sclerostin increased in men but not in boys. The underlying mechanisms and implication of this age-related differential response are unclear. INTRODUCTION Circulating sclerostin, a negative regulator of bone, decreases during puberty and increases in adulthood. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is inversely related to sclerostin. In mice, sclerostin decreases following 24 h of mechanical stimulation. Its response to exercise in humans and, especially in children, in whom high-impact physical exercise benefits bone structure and mineralization is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute response of sclerostin to a single exercise session of high mechanical loading and the corresponding changes in PTH in boys and men. METHODS Twelve boys (10.2 ± 0.4 years old) and 17 young men (22.7 ± 0.8 years old) underwent a protocol of plyometric exercises (total 144 jumps). Blood samples were collected pre-, 5 min, 1 h, and 24 h post-exercise. RESULTS Boys had significantly higher resting values of sclerostin compared with men (150 ± 37 vs. 111 ± 34 pg/ml, respectively, p = 0.006). Following exercise, sclerostin markedly increased in men but this response was attenuated in boys (at 5 min: 51 ± 38 vs. 14 ± 21%, respectively, p = 0.005). PTH levels were similar in boys and men at rest and throughout the 24-h study period, increasing significantly (p < 0.001) 5 min after exercise, decreasing after 60 min post-exercise and returning to resting values within 24 h. CONCLUSION Although the PTH response was similar in boys and men, the sclerostin response was greater in men. The combined increases in PTH and sclerostin immediately post-exercise appear contrary to the accepted osteogenic effect of exercise. The underlying mechanisms and full implication of the differential response between children and adults need to be further examined.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents an important molecular target in the treatment of lung adenocarcinomas; many anti-EGFR therapies are approved as first line and second-line treatment in patients having metastatic lung adenocarcinomas. The occurrence of this mutation varies in terms of race; it is around 10% in Caucasians and can reach 30% in Asians. Its prevalence in our Middle Eastern region is not well known. METHODS Patients diagnosed with non-squamous non-small cell lung carcinomas between March 2013 and March 2015 were included. This study was conducted at Hôtel-Dieu de France University Hospital, a tertiary medical center in Lebanon. EFGR mutations were analyzed using real time PCR technique on the Rotor-Gene Q using Scorpions and ARMS technologies. The following data was collected: the patients' characteristics (age, gender, smoking status, stage), the samples' characteristics (histology subtype, TTF-1 and Napsin A immunostainings, the site and the adequacy and the type of the sample), and the mutational EGFR status (presence and type of mutation). These variables were analyzed using SPSS 20. RESULTS 201 patients were included. The mean age was 65.2 years [31-87]; 40.2% were females. 78.1% of the included patients were smokers or ex-smokers. 12.9% of patients had a localized disease, 17.4% a locally advanced disease and 69.7% a metastatic disease. Adenocarcinoma was the main histologic subtype found in 90.5% of patients, followed by large cell carcinoma (3.5%), adenosquamous carcinoma (3.0%) and non-small cell carcinoma not otherwise specified (3.0%). 11.9% of patients had an EGFR mutation: 48% of them presented a deletion on exon 19, 40.0% a L858R mutation on exon 21, 4.0% a G719X mutation in exon 18, 4.0% an insertion in exon 20, and 4% a T790M mutation in exon 20. The presence of an EGFR mutation was significantly associated with the female gender (two-third) (p<0.05) and the non-smoking status (two-third) (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of EGFR mutation (11.9%) detected in our Lebanese population is similar to that observed in the Caucasian population. This mutation is also significantly more frequent in females and non-smokers.

Abstract
The ARRONAX cyclotron is able to deliver alpha particles at 68 MeV. In the frame of radiological research, a new method is studied to infer in situ the deposited dose: it is based on the online measurement of the bremsstrahlung (>1 keV) produced by the interaction of the incident particle with the medium. Experiments are made using bombarded poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-equivalent water targets in order to characterise this continuous X-ray spectrum. The intensity of the bremsstrahlung spectrum allows for the beam monitoring. A simulation code of the bremsstrahlung has been built, and a good agreement is found with the experimental spectra. With this simulation, it is possible to predict the sensibility of this method: it varies with the target thickness, showing a good sensibility for thin target (<1000 µm) and saturation for thicker ones. Bremsstrahlung spectrum also shows a sensibility on the target's chemical composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of genetic factors in colorectal cancer pathogenesis is widely accepted. Polymorphisms are actually thought to play a role in the unexplained colorectal cancer (CRC) susceptibility. There is conflicting data regarding the role of the transforming growth factor beta receptor 1 polymorphism 6A (TGFBR1*6A) in the increased incidence of CRC. PURPOSE Our aim is to test the association between this polymorphism and sporadic/familial CRC in the Lebanese population paying attention to lead time bias in the control group. This is a case-control study conducted in two Lebanese hospital centers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cases were diagnosed with CRC during the period of 1 year prior to the study. Controls were healthy subjects aged >50 years with a history of normal colonoscopy during the period of 5 years prior to the beginning of the study. A total of 96 cases (57 sporadic/39 familial) and 97 controls were genotyped. The odds ratios for 6A carrier status was statistically significant for sporadic CRC, odds ratio (OR) = 2.314 (95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.030-5.195) but not for familial CRC. RESULTS No association was found between 6A carrier status and mean age at diagnosis of CRC. This is the first article in the literature to evaluate the association between 6A polymorphism and total, sporadic, and familial CRC in a single study with reduction of bias in the control group. Results are in conjunction with other studies and meta-analysis.

Abstract
Among the diseases affecting banana (Musa sp), yellow Sigatoka, caused by the fungal pathogen Mycosphaerella musicola Leach, is considered one of the most important in Brazil, causing losses throughout the year. Understanding the genetic structure of pathogen populations will provide insight into the life history of pathogens, including the evolutionary processes occurring in agrosystems. Tools for estimating the possible emergence of pathogen variants with altered pathogenicity, virulence, or aggressiveness, as well as resistance to systemic fungicides, can also be developed from such data. The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity and population genetics of M. musicola in the main banana-producing regions in Brazil. A total of 83 isolates collected from different banana cultivars in the Brazilian states of Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, and Minas Gerais were evaluated using inter-simple sequence repeat markers. High variability was detected between the isolates, and 85.5% of the haplotypes were singletons in the populations. The highest source of genetic diversity (97.22%) was attributed to variations within populations. Bayesian cluster analysis revealed the presence of 2 probable ancestral groups, however, showed no relationship to population structure in terms of collection site, state of origin, or cultivar. Similarly, we detected noevidence of genetic recombination between individuals within different states, indicating that asexual cycles play a major role in M. musicola reproduction and that long-distance dispersal of the pathogen is the main factor contributing to the lack of population structure in the fungus.

Abstract
Experimental cross sections for deuteron induced nuclear reactions on natural titanium were measured, using the stacked-foil technique and gamma spectrometry, up to 34 MeV with beams provided by the ARRONAX cyclotron. The experimental cross section values were monitored using the (nat)Ti(d,x)(48)V reaction, recommended by the IAEA. The excitation functions for (nat)Ti(d,x)(44m,46,47,48)Sc are presented and compared with the existing ones and with the TALYS 1.6 code calculations using default models. Our experimental values are in good agreement with data found in the literature. TALYS 1.6 is not able to give a good estimation of the production cross sections investigated in this work. These production cross sections of scandium isotopes fit with the new Coordinated Research Project (CRP) launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to expand the database of monitor reactions.

Abstract
Beta-emitting radionuclides are not able to kill isolated tumor cells disseminated in the body, even if a high density of radiolabeled molecules can be targeted at the surface of these cells because the vast majority of emitted electrons deliver their energy outside the targeted cells. Alpha-particle emitting radionuclides may overcome this limitation. It is thus of primary importance to test and validate the radionuclide of choice, the most appropriate carrier molecule and the most promising clinical indication. Four α-particle emitting radionuclides have been or are clinically tested in phase I studies namely 213Bi, 225Ac, 212Pb and 211At. Clinical safety has been documented and encouraging efficacy has been shown for some of them (213Bi and 211At). 211At has been the most studied and could be the most promising radionuclide but 225Ac and 212Pb are also of potential great interest. Any carrier molecule that has been labeled with β-emitting radionuclides could be labeled with alpha particle-emitting radionuclide using, for some of them, the same chelating agents. However, the physical half-life of the radionuclide should match the biological half-life of the radioconjugate or its catabolites. Finally everybody agrees, based on the quite short range of alpha particles, on the fact that the clinical indications for alpha-immunotherapy should be limited to the situation of disseminated minimal residual diseases made of small clusters of malignant cells or isolated tumor cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antisynthetase syndrome is characterized by the presence of interstitial lung disease, inflammatory myopathy, joint disease, Raynaud's phenomenon and characteristic skin lesions of the hands known as "mechanic's hands" associated with the presence of serum antibody to aminoacyl transfer-RNA synthetases. We report the case of a patient in whom cutaneous relapse consistently preceded CT evidence of pulmonary fibrosis flare-up. PATIENT AND METHODS A 56-year-old patient consulted for recent exertional dyspnoea and dry cough. Clinical examination showed the skin of the tips and edges of the fingers to be thickened, hyperkeratotic and fissured. High-resolution computed tomography thoracic scans revealed interstitial lung lesions affecting both lower lobes. Lab tests showed elevated serum creatine kinase and positivity for anti-Jo-1 antibodies. Response to treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide was marked by an improvement in symptoms and regression of radiological anomalies together with disappearance of cutaneous signs. Nine months later, after changeover from cyclophosphamide to mycophenolate mofetil, cutaneous relapse and flare of interstitial lung disease were observed. A second course of cyclophosphamide followed by azathioprine resulted in regression of the cutaneous and pulmonary lesions. CONCLUSION Mechanic's hands may be considered a marker of visceral involvement and should be sought in any instance of suspected antisynthetase syndrome flare-up.
