Abstract
We have investigated a point mutant of the HIV-1 fusion peptide in a compressed monolayer at the air-water interface. A variety of surface sensitive techniques were applied to study structural features under conditions mimicking the hydrophobic/hydrophilic environment of a biomembrane. Possible partitioning into the aqueous bulk phase and molecular areas were examined by surface activity based mass conservation plots. This shows that the peptide is practically fully accumulated in the interface. Secondary structure and orientation was analyzed by means of polarized infrared reflectivity. Brewster angle microscopy and scanning force microscopy contributed nanostructural images. At low surface pressures the molecules form anti-parallel beta-sheets lying flat on the interface. Upon a moderate increase of the lateral pressure a flat beta-turn structure appears with inter- and intramolecular H-bonds. We also observed aggregates forming fingerprint-like structures with a diameter of approximately double the hydrophobic length of a beta-turn conformation. Beyond approximately 18 mN m(-1) the beta-turns straighten up. The lowest measured tilt angle was 45 degrees at 36 mN m(-1).

Abstract
Binding processes of any kind can be characterized as an association of a given ligand with some binding factor. This includes macromolecules as well as supramolecular aggregates such as micelles or membranes. The underlying molecular binding mechanism may be more or less complicated due to various intermediate steps (involving for instance conformational changes, aggregation, cooperativity, etc.). A sensible discussion of possible binding models naturally calls for a model-independent access to basic thermodynamic properties. The present contribution will demonstrate how this can quite generally be accomplished by a pertinent processing of properly selected experimental data. The method requires a series of titration measurements comprising the use of variable amounts of both the ligand and the binding factor. It leads to a linear mass conservation plot (i.e. amount of the ligand vs. a matching amount of the binding factor) whose slope and ordinate intercept are equal to the binding ratio (i.e. bound ligand per binding factor) and the free ligand concentration, respectively. This establishes the specific binding isotherm. The approach also reveals latent structurally determined features of the applied physical measuring signal. A number of examples including specific binding, unspecific adsorption and insertion in two-dimensional molecular films will illustrate the methodology.

Abstract
Optimal strategy for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) administration is essential both in terms of clinical effectiveness and economic efficiency. The aim of the present economic analysis was to provide a systematic and comprehensive cost comparison of the application of three currently available TPN systems: Separate Bottles (SB), Hospital-Compounded Bags (HCB) and Three-Compartment Bags (TCB). Sixty patients, admitted to the Geneva University Hospital and requiring TPN, were randomly assigned to one of the three systems. Three standard TPN formulas were prescribed to meet the patients' protein energy needs. TPN-related activities of medical, nursing and pharmacy staff were timed for the 24 hours of TPN administration. Manpower, nutrient solutions and medical supplies costs were calculated on the basis of mean Swiss salaries and hospital prices. TCB was the least expensive TPN system. SB and HCB systems' application costs were 120 and 150% of TCB cost, respectively. All intersystems cost comparisons were statistically significant (ANOVA p < or = 0.01). SB system required more items and manipulations, resulting in higher nurses manpower cost. Pharmacy overhead cost due to compounding was responsible for the higher cost of HCB system. Detailed manpower data presented in this study allow for an estimation of TPN application costs in other hospitals, using local salaries, specific product prices and compounding costs.

Abstract
The atomic and electronic structure of positively charged P vacancies on InP(110) surfaces is determined by combining scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory calculations. The vacancy exhibits a nonsymmetric rebonded atomic configuration with a charge transfer level 0.75+/-0.1 eV above the valence band maximum. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images show only a time average of two degenerate geometries, due to a thermal flip motion between the mirror configurations. This leads to an apparently symmetric STM image, although the ground state atomic structure is nonsymmetric.

Abstract
The molybdenum cofactor (Moco), a highly conserved pterin compound coordinating molybdenum (Mo), is required for the enzymatic activities of molybdoenzymes. In all organisms studied so far Moco is synthesized by a unique and evolutionary old multistep pathway that requires the activities of at least six gene products. In eukaryotes, the last step of Moco synthesis, i.e., transfer and insertion of Mo into molybdopterin (MPT), is catalyzed by the two-domain proteins Cnx1 in plants and gephyrin in mammals. Both domains (E and G) of these proteins are able to bind MPT in vitro. Here, we show the identification and mutational dissection of functionally important regions within the Cnx1 G domain that are essential for MPT binding, the conversion of MPT to Moco, and Moco stabilization. By functional screening for mutants in the Cnx1 G domain that are no longer able to complement Escherichia coli mogA mutants, we found two classes of mutations in highly conserved amino acid residues. (i) The first class affects in vitro binding of MPT to the protein and the stabilization of Moco, the product of the G domain. (ii) The second class is represented by two independent mutations in the aspartate 515 position that is not affected in MPT binding and Moco stabilization; rather the conversion of MPT to Moco by using bound MPT and a yet unknown form of Mo is completely abolished. The results presented here provide biochemical evidence for a purified Cnx1 G domain catalyzing the insertion of Mo into MPT.

Abstract
Direct oxidation of sulfite to sulfate occurs in various photo- and chemotrophic sulfur oxidizing microorganisms as the final step in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds and is catalyzed by sulfite:cytochrome c oxidoreductase (EC ). Here we show that the enzyme from Thiobacillus novellus is a periplasmically located alphabeta heterodimer, consisting of a 40.6-kDa subunit containing a molybdenum cofactor and an 8.8-kDa mono-heme cytochrome c(552) subunit (midpoint redox potential, E(m8.0) = +280 mV). The organic component of the molybdenum cofactor was identified as molybdopterin contained in a 1:1 ratio to the Mo content of the enzyme. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed the presence of a sulfite-inducible Mo(V) signal characteristic of sulfite:acceptor oxidoreductases. However, pH-dependent changes in the electron paramagnetic resonance signal were not detected. Kinetic studies showed that the enzyme exhibits a ping-pong mechanism involving two reactive sites. K(m) values for sulfite and cytochrome c(550) were determined to be 27 and 4 micrometer, respectively; the enzyme was found to be reversibly inhibited by sulfate and various buffer ions. The sorAB genes, which encode the enzyme, appear to form an operon, which is preceded by a putative extracytoplasmic function-type promoter and contains a hairpin loop termination structure downstream of sorB. While SorA exhibits significant similarities to known sequences of eukaryotic and bacterial sulfite:acceptor oxidoreductases, SorB does not appear to be closely related to any known c-type cytochromes.

Abstract
PURPOSE The methodology we propose combines the immunohistochemical determination of the oestrogen and progesterone receptors (ER and PgR) with the characterization of the oestradiol- and progesterone-induced influence on cell proliferation in breast cancers in order to characterize their steroid hormone sensitivity at both the "static" and "dynamic" level. METHODS ER and PgR have been immunohistochemically quantified by means of computer-assisted microscopy. Cell proliferation has been determined by means of tritiated thymidine autoradiography in tumour samples maintained in vitro as organotypic cultures. A series of 14 patients was investigated. RESULTS Of the 14 breast cancers under study, one with an unequivocally "very ER-rich"/"very PgR-rich" immunohistochemical phenotype totally failed to exhibit any modification in its cell proliferation level after both oestradiol and progesterone stimulation. Two cases definitively associated with an "ER-poor"/"PgR-poor" immunohistochemical phenotype nevertheless responded noticeably to the dynamic stimulation of their cell proliferation by oestradiol and progesterone. While our series of cases covers 14 patients only, it suffices to demonstrate the limits of ER and PgR determination in characterizing steroid hormone sensitivity in breast cancer. DISCUSSION The present work therefore presents an in vitro approach to test growth regulation of human breast cancer by steroid hormones. The clinical value of the present approach should be further determined by showing that steroid hormone-induced modifications in cell proliferation level are actually associated with clinical response.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the influence of body position during neurosurgical and cerebrovascular operations on regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2). Awake volunteers (group I; n = 14), anesthetized patients (group II; n = 48) undergoing lumbar discectomy, and 12 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (group III) with internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis were studied. Anesthesia in the patient groups was performed with sevoflurane (1.1 Vol% insp.) in N2O2/O2 mixture (FiO2 0.4) rSO2 was monitored with a INVOS 4100 cerebral oxymeter (Somanetics Corporation, Troy, MI). Measurements were done in all groups in supine position with head turned to the right and left side. Furthermore, in groups I and II, rSO2 was measured in right lateral, left lateral, prone, or sitting position. In each position the parameters were registered at three times (1, 3, and 5 min after taking up the position). In the healthy volunteers, the mean rSO2 values of both hemispheres were 71.3 +/- 5.0%. No significant changes of rSO2 were found interhemispherical and upon turning the head to both sides or positioning to the prone and both lateral positions. After assuming the sitting position, the decrease of rSO2 was not significant. In group II, rSO2 decreased significantly in the sitting position. In group III, baseline readings for rSO2 obtained from the side of ICA stenosis were significantly lower, compared to the contralateral side. After turning the head to the ipsilateral side, this difference diminished. In contrast, turning the head toward the contralateral side, the rSO2 difference remained nearly constant, both values decreasing constantly throughout the observation period. In conclusion, after different positioning maneuvers awake and under anesthesia, alterations of rSO2 can be registrated by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Different infectious agents have been proposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated the role of latent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in patients with RA. METHODS Sera of 55 patients with RA and 60 age and sex matched healthy controls were examined for antibodies against EBV encoded antigens (EBNA-1, VCA, and EA) by ELISA. The presence of viral DNA was analyzed by polymerase chain amplification of DNA isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of these samples and from cells of synovial fluid (SF) specimens. Paraffin sections of synovial membranes from 25 patients were subjected to in situ hybridization analysis for the EBV encoded small RNA EBER1 and EBER2. RESULTS Two-fold increased values of IgG antibodies against EBNA-1 were found in patients with RA in comparison to healthy controls (p = 0.029). No statistically significant difference could be observed for antibody levels against EBV-VCA. Fourteen (24.1%) of 55 patients with RA had serological evidence of reactivated EBV infection in comparison to none of the control group (p = 0.028). In PBMC, EBV DNA was detected in a significantly higher proportion in the patient group (50.9 vs. 30%; p = 0.02). In addition, SF cells harbored the viral DNA in 30% of RA cases compared to 16.6% of control cases (p = 0.02). However, EBER1/2 transcripts could only be found within synovial membranes of 2 (8%) of 25 patients with RA. CONCLUSION These findings support the hypothesis that EBV infection may be involved in the pathogenesis of RA. Further studies may define the precise pathogenetic mechanisms of viral infection for the development of inflammatory arthritis.

Abstract
We have investigated monomolecular fluid-like films of palmitoyl oleoylphosphatidyl lipids with choline, glycerol and serine head groups, respectively. Conventional Langmuir trough experiments have been evaluated towards a thermodynamic analysis applying a novel approach that was recently developed in this laboratory. Our work involves elaborate efforts to exclude possible error sources of the basic measuring parameters. By means of pertinent mass conservation plots it could then be shown that the present lipids form a practically insoluble monolayer. Relative deviations of the lateral pressure from its ideal (gaseous) value are seen to be a very pronounced linear function of the surface concentration (between 1 and about 35 mN/m). They reveal a clearly manifested Boyle point around 4 mN/m, indicating formation of aggregates in the very low pressure range. The results are discussed in terms of a rather simple quantitative formulation of the underlying equation of state including fit curves of the related partial molecular area and Gibbs free energy.

Abstract
Calciphylaxis is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication in chronic renal failure. It is characterized by ischemic tissue necrosis primarily of the skin. The typical histopathologic finding is microvascular calcification with endovascular fibrosis. Patients typically present with violaceous, mottled and painful lesions which tend to progress to non-healing ulcers and necrosis. Most frequently the lower extremities are involved in a symmetric fashion but the trunk may also be affected. Sepsis from superinfection of the lesions accounts for the high mortality of this disease which is of importance for dermatologists and nephrologists alike. 61-year-old female patient developed lesions of calciphylaxis on both calves two years after beginning hemodialysis to treat renal failure due to diabetic glomerulosclerosis. We discuss aspects of the pathogenesis of calciphylaxis, as well as diagnosis, treatment and means of prevention, and review the current literature.

Abstract
During the screening for Rhodobacter capsulatus mutants defective in xanthine degradation, one Tn5 mutant which was able to grow with xanthine as a sole nitrogen source only in the presence of high molybdate concentrations (1 mM), a phenotype resembling Escherichia coli mogA mutants, was identified. Unexpectedly, the corresponding Tn5 insertion was located within the moeA gene. Partial DNA sequence analysis and interposon mutagenesis of regions flanking R. capsulatus moeA revealed that no further genes essential for molybdopterin biosynthesis are located in the vicinity of moeA and revealed that moeA forms a monocistronic transcriptional unit in R. capsulatus. Amino acid sequence alignments of R. capsulatus MoeA (414 amino acids [aa]) with E. coli MogA (195 aa) showed that MoeA contains an internal domain homologous to MogA, suggesting similar functions of these proteins in the biosynthesis of the molybdenum cofactor. Interposon mutants defective in moeA did not exhibit dimethyl sulfoxide reductase or nitrate reductase activity, which both require the molybdopterin guanine dinucleotide (MGD) cofactor, even after addition of 1 mM molybdate to the medium. In contrast, the activity of xanthine dehydrogenase, which binds the molybdopterin (MPT) cofactor, was restored to wild-type levels after the addition of 1 mM molybdate to the growth medium. Analysis of fluorescent derivatives of the molybdenum cofactor of purified xanthine dehydrogenase isolated from moeA and modA mutant strains, respectively, revealed that MPT is inserted into the enzyme only after molybdenum chelation, and both metal chelation and Mo-MPT insertion can occur only under high molybdate concentrations in the absence of MoeA. These data support a model for the biosynthesis of the molybdenum cofactor in which the biosynthesis of MPT and MGD are split at a stage when the molybdenum atom is added to MPT.

Abstract
The effects of acupuncture have been described and handed down empirically for centuries but there are few reports based on objective data. The aim of this study was to provide selective evidence of a specific effect of acupuncture on the brain and the eye using a Doppler ultrasound technique. A transcranial Doppler sonography arrangement was developed to monitor blood flow profiles in the supratrochlear and middle cerebral arteries simultaneously and continuously. Two acupuncture schemas were tested in a randomized cross-over study with 13 patients with ophthalmologic diseases. Applying acupuncture needles to special eye points increased the blood flow velocity in the supratrochlear artery significantly (p < 0.001) compared to the reference interval before acupuncture. In the middle cerebral artery only a minimal, non-significant increase in blood flow velocity was seen. In contrast, acupuncture of points that are held to increase cerebral blood flow velocity increased blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery significantly (p < 0.001) while leaving that in the supratrochlear artery unchanged. Specific acupuncture produce specific, reproducible quantifiable effects on blood flow velocity in arteries to the brain and eye.

Abstract
We have investigated the wasp venom peptides mastoparan X and polistes mastoparan regarding their apparent potential to induce pore-like defects in phosphatidylcholine unilamellar vesicles. Based on a fundamental theoretical model, the pore activation and deactivation kinetics have been evaluated from the observed efflux of liposome entrapped carboxyfluorescein in relation to the bound peptide to lipid ratio. We can quantitatively describe our experimental data very well in terms of a specific reaction scheme resulting in only a few short-lived pores. They evidently emerge rapidly from a prepore nucleus being produced by two rate-limiting monomeric states of bound peptide. These peculiar states would be favorably populated in an early stage of bilayer perturbation, but tend to die out in the course of a peptide/lipid restabilization process.

Abstract
With a view toward possible new insights into viral fusion mechanisms, we have investigated the HIV-1 gp41 fusion peptide in a monomolecular film of the biomembrane lipid palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine. Its surface activity at an air/water interface was measured under equilibrium conditions, using the conventional Langmuir trough technique. Through a novel thermodynamic analysis, the partial molecular area of the peptide in the lipid moiety could be determined as a function of the lateral pressure and the interfacial peptide/lipid ratio. This indicates an orientation of the peptide backbone parallel to the lipid hydrocarbon tails. The molecular area decreases significantly upon monolayer compression, suggesting a conformational transition from a somewhat compact configuration to a more extended, presumably beta-strand structure when a lipid packing density is approached that is generally believed to mimic the physical state of a biological membrane. Up to a lateral pressure of approximately 15 mN/m, practically all peptide inserts into the lipid monolayer. At higher compression a distinct partitioning into the aqueous subphase is observed. Under these conditions the data also reflect a strong aggregation of the lipid-associated peptide. Beyond a critical peptide/lipid ratio, the peptide's area requirement was found to become substantially enhanced, possibly because of the formation of water-filled pores.

Abstract
A new transcranial Doppler sonography arrangement was used to monitor blood flow profiles in the supratrochlear and middle cerebral arteries simultaneously and continuously. The technique selectively demonstrated the specific effect of acupuncture on the cranial arteries, in a 25-year-old female with pigmentary retinopathy. Stimulation of points Zanzhu and Yuyao led to a marked increase of blood flow velocity in the supratrochlear artery and to a decrease of flow velocity, in the middle cerebral artery. These acupuncture-induced effects were reproducible even though both arteries originate from the same major vessel.

Abstract
Cell-matrix interactions are governed by a distinct set of proteins, with 2 nonintegrin laminin-binding proteins, galectin-1 and galectin-3, providing 1 aspect. The expression patterns of laminin and the 2 galectins and galectin binding sites were quantitatively determined by means of computer-assisted microscopy with the aim of differentiating between 16 leiomyomas and 10 leiomyosarcomas of the uterus. Three quantitative variables were computed for each of the 5 histochemical markers: labeling index, which describes the percentage of tissue area specifically stained by a given marker; mean optical density which reflects the concentration of the marker; and concentrational heterogeneity, which characterizes the degree of heterogeneity of the marker distribution in the tumor tissue areas. The results reveal evident differences in the galectin-3-related parameters in the 2 tumors groups. Whereas the concentration of galectin-3 binding sites was significantly (P = .01) weaker in the leiomyosarcomas than in the leiomyomas, the percentages of tumor tissue expressing galectin-3 (P = .02) and its binding sites (P = .002) were significantly higher in the leiomyosarcomas than in the leiomyomas. Although significantly (P = .02) higher, the concentration of laminin was more heterogeneously distributed (P = .01) in the leiomyosarcomas than in the leiomyomas. In contrast, the levels of expression of galectin-1 and its accessible binding sites remained similar for both the leiomyomas and the leiomyosarcomas. Finally we document how the levels of expression of galectin-3 and its binding sites can be of assistance in reliably differentiating leiomyomas from leiomyosarcomas.

Abstract
Acupuncture has been used for over 5,000 years and a large body of evidence exists. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, introduced more than a decade ago, has evolved into a dynamic, reliable, reproducible and practical diagnostic tool. In this study we describe simultaneous and continuous TCD monitoring of the supratrochlear and middle cerebral arteries in two patients with ophthalmologic diseases undergoing computer-controlled acupuncture (CCA). During eye acupuncture scheme there was a significant increase in the mean bloodflow velocity (vm) of the A. supratrochlearis (+39% patient 1; +15% patient 2; p < 0.001, t-test) in both patients. The effect was still evident after the needles were removed. There was a smaller increase (+4% and +3%; n.s.) of vm in the A. cerebri media. These results suggest that eye acupuncture could have a specific effect on intra- and extracerebral arteries. CCA might improve the quality of acupuncture.

Abstract
The molybdenum cofactor (Moco), a highly conserved pterin compound complexing molybdenum, is required for the enzymatic activities of all molybdenum enzymes except nitrogenase. Moco is synthesized by a unique and evolutionarily old pathway that requires the activities of at least six gene products. Some of the proteins involved in bacterial, plant, and invertebrate Moco biosynthesis show striking homologies to the primary structure of gephyrin, a polypeptide required for the clustering of inhibitory glycine receptors in postsynaptic membranes in the rat central nervous system. Here, we show that gephyrin binds with high affinity to molybdopterin, the metabolic precursor of Moco. Furthermore, gephyrin expression can reconstitute Moco biosynthesis in Moco-deficient bacteria, a molybdenum-dependent mouse cell line, and a Moco-deficient plant mutant. Conversely, inhibition of gephyrin expression by antisense RNA expression in cultured murine cells reduces their Moco content significantly. These data indicate that in addition to clustering glycine receptors, gephyrin also is involved in Moco biosynthesis and illustrate the remarkable conservation of its function in Moco biosynthesis throughout phylogeny.

Abstract
In patients with lesions of the cervical spine, direct laryngoscopy for endotracheal intubation entails the risk of injuring the spinal cord. In an attempt to avoid this complication, the authors used flexible fiberoptic nasal intubation in a series of 327 patients with cervical lesions undergoing elective neurosurgical procedures. The nasal route was preferred for laryngeal intubation because it is easier than the oral route and a restraining collar or halo device does not impair the intubating maneuver. Bronchoscopic intubation was possible in all patients. In 12 patients (3.6%), anatomic abnormalities prevented transnasal insertion of the endotracheal tube, and transoral fiberoptic intubation was necessary. Endotracheal intubation was graded as slightly difficult in 85 patients (26%). The minimal peripheral oxygen saturation during intubation exceeded 90% in 289 patients (88%). In the other 38 patients, the mean O2 saturation was 84.2+/-4.3% (range, 72-89%). Intubation was well tolerated by all patients and none had recall of the procedure. Cervical stabilizers did not have to be removed for intubation in any patient. None of the patients had postoperative neurologic deficits attributable to the intubation procedure. The authors consider fiberoptic transnasal intubation to be a useful alternative to direct laryngoscopic tracheal intubation in patients undergoing elective surgical procedures on the cervical spine to avoid potential injury to the cervical spinal cord.

Abstract
Different anesthetic drugs can produce different electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns. Nondrug induced influences, such as surgical stimulation, may also alter the EEG in anesthetized patients. Increases of delta activity are interpreted as signs of deepening of anesthesia. These EEG patterns are sometimes also found in frontal leads after surgical stimulation during isoflurane anesthesia. However, to avoid incorrect anesthetic management under EEG monitoring, this phenomenon of "paradoxical arousal" must be taken into consideration. This study demonstrates that, after surgical stimulation, frontal activity was enhanced in the 2-3 Hz and 3-4 Hz frequency bands. On the other hand, in the subdelta range (the 0.05-1 Hz and 1-2 Hz frequency bands), there was an opposite reaction. This significant (p<0.001, according to ANOVA and Dunn's method) reduction of EEG power as a result of the surgical stimuli was found in 25 patients (mean age, 49.1+/-16.3 years) scheduled for elective neurosurgical intervention in the lumbosacral region. This report shows some of the problems arising from the common practice of arbitrarily subdividing a power spectrum in frequency bands.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The detection or ruling out of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) can be determined noninvasively by contrast echocardiography (CE). The transesophageal technique is superior to the transthoracic technique regarding sensitivity, whereas the specificity of both methods is equally high. This prospective study shows the rational use of transesophageal CE for the detection of a PFO, in patients without cardiovascular disorders. METHODS 165 patients (92 female, 73 male, age 48 +/- 18 years) with planned neuro-surgery in a sitting position, underwent CE to rule out a PFO. If the CE was positive, an alternative position was selected in order to avoid a paradoxical air embolism. RESULTS Initially, a transthoracic CE was performed in all patients resulting in 21 patients (13%) being positive and 39 patients (24%) being negative by sufficient image quality. A transesophageal CE was performed in 96 of the remaining 105 patients (63%). Here, further 25 patients showed a positive CE in the sense of a PFO. The combined use of transthoracic and transesophageal CE revealed a PFO in 46 of 165 patients (28%). CONCLUSION The use of both, transthoracic and transesophageal CE is an efficient approach to the preoperative detection of a PFO in the sense of quality and economics. Depending upon the image quality, the use of a transesophageal examination could be avoided in one third of the cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metal skin clips are used in surgery. They may contain metals that might cause allergic reactions and delayed wound healing. METHODS The metal composition of 18 different surgical clamps was examined. The allergy status of 184 patients was determined by patch tests and was correlated with the clinical outcome of wound healing after application of skin clips. RESULTS Skin clips contained chromium, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and titanium in concentrations high enough to cause allergic reactions. Eighteen percent of the men and 23% of the women were sensitive to nickel and 16% of the men to chromium. We found a positive correlation between the grade of nickel allergy and the reaction to the skin clips. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that allergic reactions and delayed wound healing can be caused by the use of surgical skin clips. Therefore skin clips are not recommended for patients with a history of contact dermatitis to metals and/or atopy.

Abstract
Lactococcus lactis DPC4268 is widely used for Cheddar cheese manufacture in Ireland where it is recognised for its reliable fast acid producing ability in dairy environments. A transconjugant of this strain, L. lactis DPC4275, was generated which produces the broad spectrum, two-component bacteriocin lacticin 3147, which is inhibitory to a variety of undesirable gram-positive bacteria including Clostridium, Bacillus, Enterococcus, Listeria, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. Both DPC4268 and DPC4275 were used as single strain starters for manufacture of salamis. These products were compared with a salami manufactured with a conventional starter (Lactobacillus sake and Staphylococcus carnosus) in terms of pH development, a(w)-value, weight loss, colour development and sensory characteristics. Salamis produced with either lactococcal culture exhibited pH values below 5.1 and a(w)-values below 0.90 which is favourable for preservation and hygienic stability. In addition, these salamis had good sensory and colorimetric qualities. A minimum lacticin 3147 concentration of 640 AU/g was detected in the salamis which were produced with L. lactis DPC4275.
