Abstract
Anti-inflammation strategy is one of the proposed therapeutic approaches to hepatic fibrosis. IL-17 is critical in inflammation, but the role of IL-17 in liver fibrosis has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we investigate the role of IL-17 on bile duct ligation-induced liver injury and fibrosis in C57BL/6 mice. Animals were sacrificed at designated times, and serum and liver tissues were collected for analysis of liver function and serum IL-6, IL-1β, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) levels. IL-17 blockade with anti-IL-17A mAb significantly improved liver function and decreased hepatocellular necrosis, pro-inflammatory cytokines, neutrophils and macrophages influx. Furthermore, CD3 + and CD8 + lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages were found to express IL-17, and neutrophils are the principal IL-17-producing cells after BDL-induced liver injury. These data indicated that IL-17 signal contributes to the pathogenesis of cholestatic liver injury and blocked of IL-17 could potentially benefit patients with cholestatic liver disease.

Abstract
We demonstrate the strong coupling of dye molecules to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in the Kretschmann geometry and propagating at the interface of silver and dye-doped polymer. The dispersion curve of such a system, studied in the reflectometry experiments, is split into three branches and demonstrates an avoided crossing - the signature of a strong coupling. We have further studied the excitation spectra of the dye emission and found that the positions of the excitation peaks have a good match with the points in the dispersion curve determined by the reflectometry. At the same time, the analysis of the spectra of the plasmon-mediated spontaneous emission, decoupled to the prism and acquired at multiple collection angles, has resulted in a quite different dispersion curve exhibiting a non-trivial splitting into multiple branches. This suggests that the same plasmonic environment couples differently to absorbing and emitting dye molecules.

Abstract
Knowledge of critical care nurses' intravenous fluid bolus therapy (FBT) practice remains underexplored. Using a multi-choice online survey conducted between September and October 2014, we sought to describe the self-reported practice of critical care nurses located in Australia and New Zealand. Two hundred and ninety-five critical care nurses responded to the survey with most practising in adult ICUs. Overall, 0.9% saline solution was the preferred solution for FBT. However, more Australian than New Zealand respondents preferred 'albumin 4%' (31% versus 3.6%, P <0.01) for FBT. In contrast, more New Zealand respondents preferred 'Plasma-Lyte®' (33.3% versus 6.4%, P <0.01). Half of the respondents defined FBT as 250 ml administered as quickly as possible. However, FBT volumes ranged from 100 ml to >1000 ml and administration duration from as quickly as possible to 60 minutes. In response to FBT, almost half of the respondents expected an increase in mean arterial pressure of between 11 to 20 mmHg. Similarly, >40% expected a central venous pressure increase >3 mmHg, >70% expected a urinary output increase of 0.5 to 1.0 ml/kg/hr, and >60% expected a decrease in heart rate of >11 /min. Overall, 0.9% saline remains the most common solution for FBT, but there are significant national differences in the preference for albumin and Plasma-Lyte. A volume of 250 ml defines a fluid bolus, with a range from 100 ml to >1000 ml, and speed of delivery from stat to 60 minutes. Most nurses expect substantial physiological effects with FBT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Periodontitis is a severe chronic inflammatory disease and one of the most prevalent non-communicable chronic diseases that affects the majority of the world's adult population. While great efforts have been devoted toward understanding the pathogenesis of periodontitis, there remains a pressing need for developing potent therapeutic strategies for targeting this dreadful disease. In this study, we utilized adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing cathepsin K (Ctsk) small hairpin (sh)RNA (AAV-sh-Ctsk) to silence Ctsk in vivo and subsequently evaluated its impact in periodontitis as a potential therapeutic strategy for this disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used a known mouse model of periodontitis, in which wild-type BALB/cJ mice were infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis W50 in the maxillary and mandibular periodontium to induce the disease. AAV-sh-Ctsk was then administrated locally into the periodontal tissues in vivo, followed by analyses to assess progression of the disease. RESULTS AAV-mediated Ctsk silencing drastically protected mice (> 80%) from P. gingivalis-induced bone resorption by osteoclasts. In addition, AAV-sh-Ctsk administration drastically reduced inflammation by impacting the expression of many inflammatory cytokines as well as T-cell and dendritic cell numbers in periodontal lesions. CONCLUSION AAV-mediated Ctsk silencing can simultaneously target both the inflammation and bone resorption associated with periodontitis through its inhibitory effect on immune cells and osteoclast function. Thereby, AAV-sh-Ctsk administration can efficiently protect against periodontal tissue damage and alveolar bone loss, establishing this AAV-mediated local silencing of Ctsk as an important therapeutic strategy for effectively treating periodontal disease.

Abstract
The generation of antiviral drugs from herbs and other natural resources with traditionally long-confirmed effects is an efficient approach. So far, no herb or components from herbs that could inhibit bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) replication have been described. In this study, the antiviral effect of curcumin, a natural phenolic constituent of the spice turmeric, on BoHV-1 replication was evaluated in cell culture. We demonstrated that curcumin impairs BoHV-1 viral particles and affects the virus post-binding entry process. Furthermore, curcumin upregulated the proportion of the plasma membrane adopting a lipid raft conformation in MDBK cells, which supported the previous reports that curcumin can modulate the lipid bilayer. Though the antiviral mechanism of curcumin on BoHV-1 needs further study, we identified for the first time a component from herb that could inhibit BoHV-1 replication, in vitro.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rare reports can be found about sex- and age-specific body composition survey among Chinese population. The aim of this study is to explore the change of sex-specific body compositions with aging among Chinese adolescents, adults and elders. METHODS In a large-scale population survey about physiological constants and health conditions, 75,714 subjects who aged from 8 to 80 completed body composition array. Body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (PBF), water percentage of body weight (WPBW), water percentage of lean body mass (WPLBM), fat-free mass index (FFMI) and basic metabolic rate were examined with Biodynamics BI-310 body composition analyzer. General obesity is defined as BMI equal to or greater than 28 kg/m2. RESULTS The prevalence rates of general obesity were 9.4% for males and 7.7% for females respectively. With aging, PBF and FMI showed a U-shape curvilinear trend and WPBW showed a parabolic trend for males. At same age group: 18-19 age groups, PBF and FMI declined to the valley and WPBW rose to the peak. For females, PBF, WPBW and FMI changed in a linear trend. The values of WPLBM and FFMI showed same curvilinear trend for two genders. WPLBM changed in a U-shape trend and touched the valley in twenties for males and in 18-19 age groups for females. The value of FFMI was larger for older age groups in the younger generation but smaller in the older generation. A parabolic trend peaking was seen in the thirties for males and in the forties for females. Regression models with age as independent variable showed that the larger rate of increase of PBF and smaller rates of increase for WPBM and WPLBM with aging for males. CONCLUSION This study presents detailed data about sex-specific body composition conditions. Different change trend with aging was found about body composition conditions.

Abstract
Nutrient overenrichment has led to dramatic increases in harmful cyanobacterial blooms, creating serious threats to drinking water supplies, ecological and economic sustainability of freshwater ecosystems. Nutrient-cyanobacterial bloom interactions were examined in eutrophic Lake Taihu, China. In situ microcosm nutrient dilution bioassays and mesocosm nutrient addition experiments were conducted to determine nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentration and load thresholds needed to control cyanobacterial bloom formation. Blooms were dominated by toxic, non N2 fixing Microcystis spp, from May to December. Dilution bioassays showed seasonality in nutrient limitation, with P-availability controlling prebloom spring conditions and N-availability controlling summer-fall blooms. Nutrient dilution and enrichment bioassays indicated that total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentration thresholds should be targeted at below 0.80 mg L(–1) and 0.05 mg L(–1), respectively, to limit intrinsic growth rates of Microcystis dominated blooms. Based on estimates of nutrient loading and observed stoichiometry of phytoplankton biomass, 61–71% TN and 20–46% TP reduction are necessary to bring Taihu’s phytoplankton biomass to “acceptable” sub-bloom conditions of less than 20 μg L(–1) chlorophyll a.

Abstract
We have studied angular distribution of emission of dye molecules deposited on lamellar metal/dielectric and Si/Ag nanowire based metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion. In agreement with the theoretical prediction, the emission pattern of dye on top of lamellar metamaterial is similar to that on top of metal. At the same time, the effective medium model predicts the emission patterns of the nanowire array and the dye film deposited on glass to be nearly identical to each other. This is not the case of our experiment. We tentatively explain the nearly Lambertian (∝cosθ) angular distribution of emission of the nanowire based sample by a surface roughness.

Abstract
Spontaneous emission is one of the most fundamental quantum phenomena in optics. Following the seminal work of Purcell and in agreement with the Fermi's Golden Rule, its rate can be controlled with the photonic density of states (PDOS). In recent years, this effect has been demonstrated in metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion--highly anisotropic composite materials, which have a broad-band singularity of the density of photonic states. At this time, we show that hyperbolic metamaterials can control spontaneous emission spectra as well. Experimentally, DCM laser dye has been embedded into lamellar metal/dielectric metamaterial. The observed 18 nm blue shift of emission is explained by strong dispersion of the density of photonic states. On the other hand, practically no spectral shift has been observed in the excitation spectra of the same dye. This suggests that the effect of PDOS on spontaneous emission is very different from its effect on excitation and absorption.

Abstract
The apoptosis of glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) in rat Thy-1 nephritis (Thy-1N), a model of human mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (MsPGN), is accompanied by sublytic C5b-9 deposition. However, the mechanism by which sublytic C5b-9 induces GMC apoptosis is unclear. In the present studies, the effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis-associated factor 1 (XAF1) expression on GMC apoptosis and the role of p300 and interferon regulatory factor-1 (IRF-1) in mediating XAF1 gene activation were determined, both in the GMCs induced by sublytic C5b-9 (in vitro) and in the renal tissues of rats with Thy-1N (in vivo). The in vitro studies demonstrated that IRF-1-enhanced XAF1 gene activation and its regulation by p300-mediated IRF-1 acetylation were involved in GMC apoptosis induced by sublytic C5b-9. The element of IRF-1 binding to XAF1 promoter and two acetylated sites of IRF-1 protein were also revealed. In vivo, silence of p300, IRF-1 or XAF1 genes in the renal tissues diminished GMC apoptosis and secondary GMC proliferation as well as urinary protein secretion in Thy-1N rats. Together, these data implicate that sublytic C5b-9 induces the expression of both p300 and IRF-1, as well as p300-dependent IRF-1 acetylation that may contribute to XAF1 gene activation and subsequent GMC apoptosis in Thy-1N rats.

Abstract
Having in mind parametric amplification of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as the final goal, we took the first step and studied in the Kretschmann geometry a simpler nonlinear optical process - second harmonic generation (SHG) enhanced by SPPs propagating at the interface between gold film and 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA). The experimentally demonstrated SHG efficiency was nearly 10(6) times larger than the one reported previously in the SPP system with different nonlinear optical material. The experimentally measured nonlinear conversion efficiency is estimated to be sufficient for parametric amplification of surface plasmon polaritons at ultra-short laser pumping.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a relatively rare but potentially fatal complication of childhood rheumatic illnesses. We sought to provide insight for the timely recognition and diagnosis of MAS and efficacious disease management in adults with rheumatic diseases. METHODS Clinical files for eight adult MAS patients treated at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University were analyzed for clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, therapeutic measurements and clinical outcomes. RESULTS The study included male and female patients with ages ranging from 16 to 59 years old. All patients were diagnosed with underlying rheumatic diseases with five patients having adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), two patients having systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and one patient having Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The interval from fever onset to MAS diagnosis varied from seven days to 40 days. The most common clinical presentations were prolonged high fever, respiratory symptoms and jaundice. No patients had symptoms involving the central nervous system (CNS). Laboratory findings showed peripheral cytopenias, elevated liver enzymes, elevated triglycerides, hypofibrinogenemia and bone marrow hemophagocytosis. Potential effective treatments for MAS include glucocorticoid plus immunoglobulin therapy, but delays in diagnosis and treatment may lead to a fatal disease course. CONCLUSION MAS in adults may not be as rare as was once thought, although the clinical features of MAS in adults often differ from those seen in children. The MAS mortality in adults is far higher than that for children. A diagnosis of MAS should be considered when a patient with rheumatic disease presents with prolonged high fever, peripheral cytopenia and liver failure. Collection of bone marrow aspirates is critical for accurate diagnosis and MAS therapy should begin as early as possible.
