Abstract
Canine pericardium which had been treated with polyepoxy compounds (Denacol EX-313) was used as a patch graft for the correction of experimentally-created diaphragmatic defects in five dogs belonging to the same litter. Clinical, macroscopic and histological examinations were conducted every month up to five months after suturing of the patch graft. Clinical examination of the patch graft showed no apparent abnormalities. Macroscopic examination conducted during autopsy showed that the patch graft maintained adequate elasticity for five months after suturing, the surface of the patch graft was covered with a thin membrane and neovascularization was observed. Histological examination showed that the surface of the patch graft was covered with a thin membrane. Inflammatory tissue reactions were observed at one month, but gradually decreased from the second month onwards. In addition, the patch graft had excellent tissue affinity.

Abstract
Antheridiogens in two species of Schizaeaceous ferns, Lygodium circinnatum and Lygodium flexuosum, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In L. circinnatum, gibberellin A73 (GA73) methyl ester (GA73-Me), which had originally been identified in L. japonicum, was identified as a principal antheridiogen, and the methyl esters of five known GAs (GA9, GA20, GA70, GA88, and 3-epi-GA88) were also identified as minor antheridiogens. In addition, four compounds corresponding to isomers of monohydroxy-GA73-Me were detected. One of these was shown to be 12[beta]-hydroxy-GA73-Me, the parent acid of which has been allocated the GA assignment GA96. The other three compounds, tentatively named X1, X2, and X3, have not been fully characterized. In L. flexuosum, GA73-Me was also identified as a major antheridiogen, with X2 being detected as a minor one. The total antheridium-formation activity in the culture medium of 7-week-old prothallia of L. circinnatum and L. flexuosum was more than 1000 times higher than that of L. japonicum. On the other hand, the response of gametophytes of the former two Lygodium ferns to GA73-Me was more than 100 times lower than that of L. japonicum.

Abstract
Despite the fact that vertigo has been one of the most frequent complaints encountered in daily practice in an ENT outpatient clinic, it is believed to be the most unwelcome subject for ENT physicians. The reasons are diverse; e.g., the understanding of vertigo is still a difficult task for most physicians and requires time-consuming multiple studies. However, answers to those questions, although speculated a posteriori, are yet to be substantiated. Therefore, we have analyzed the data obtained from multiple questionnaires that were addressed to ENT physicians practicing in Chiba Prefecture in November of 1993. However, those who work in publicly run hospitals were excluded from the study. The study included otorhinolaryngologists who were members of the Society of Otorhinolaryngology of Japan. We received filled questionnaire forms from 76 of 155 members (49%). The age ranged from 33 to 82 years (mean 55.8 years, 68 men and 8 women). From these questionnaires, it became apparent that physicians are not necessarily reluctant to see patients with vertigo. Instead, most ENT physicians appeared to be actively paying attention to this symptom and to be making efforts to approach its diagnosis and treatment. Although we are not certain if the data obtained here represent the majority of ENT physicians, the positive attitudes toward the patients with vertigo/dizziness would certainly encourage those of us who are interested in this particular symptom category.

Abstract
Abstract
The mechanism of IL-12 production has been studied by stimulating macrophages or B cell lines with LPS, Staphylococcus aureus, or phorbol diester. However, since IL-12 plays an important role in the activation of T cells interacting with APC, it is important to study the mechanism of IL-12 production induced by T helper cell-APC interaction. We and others have demonstrated that IL-12 is produced in cultures where Th1 cells are stimulated with Ag or APC. In the present experiments, we studied a role of CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interaction in IL-12 production and obtained the following results: 1) incubation of normal Th1 clone with APC in the presence of Ag induced IL-12 p40 and p35 mRNA accumulation and IL-12 production, and the addition of anti-CD40L blocked the p40 mRNA accumulation and IL-12 production but not p35 mRNA accumulation; 2) when Th1 clone from a CD40L-deficient mouse was used in the incubation, p35 mRNA accumulation was induced, but neither p40 mRNA accumulation nor IL-12 production was induced; 3) CD40L+ Th1 clone, or insect cell membrane expressing mouse CD40L, induced p40 mRNA accumulation and IL-12 production but not p35 mRNA accumulation. These results indicate that the CD40-CD40L interaction plays a critical role in IL-12 p40 mRNA accumulation and bioactive IL-12 production and that p35 mRNA accumulation was regulated via a different mechanism than CD40-CD40L interaction. Most of the cells producing IL-12 were Mac-1+ macrophages.

Abstract
We investigated 5 patients with intracranial lesions. The initial complaint was tinnitus with normal hearing or sight sensorineural hearing loss. The lesions were 2 cerebello-pontine angle meningiomas, 1 cerebello-pontine angle epidermoid cyst, 1 supratentorial falx meningioma and 1 dural arteriovenous malformation at the temporal bone. Because of pulsatile or severe persistent tinnitus, we performed CT and MRI to determine the presence of intracranial lesions. Some patients had an episode of cerebral infarction and the complaint of headache or head heaviness. Quantitative measurement of tinnitus showed a low-frequency character in a pitch-match examination and moderate loudness in loudness balance. In the patients with falx meningioma and dural arteriovenous malformation, the tinnitus character was pulsatile and abnormal blood flow might have affected the peripheral auditory system. On the other hand, in the patients with a cerebello-pontine angle tumor, the tinnitus character was non-pulsatile and compression on the central auditory system by the tumor might have caused the tinnitus.

Abstract
Epimeric conversion of 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) to its 2-epimer 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-mannose (FDM) proved by 19F NMR has been shown to reflect the brain activity. To examine the feasibility of FDG as a new NMR probe for in vivo functional monitoring, we studied here the fundamental NMR properties of metabolites, spectral assignments, and reliability of NMR quantification. Metabolites confirmed in brain besides FDM-6-phosphate were as follows: FDG-1-phosphate, FDG-1,6-bisphosphate, FDM-1-phosphate, FDM-1,6-bisphosphate, and FDG and FDM derivatives of nucleotide diphosphate. NMR quantification of these metabolites was evaluated in comparison with the method of 18F-labeled FDG. In the NMR functional study using FDG, where a high dose is inevitable, the dose dependence of uptake was investigated. FDG uptake in mouse brain was shown to be in the range of interpretation using the biochemical parameters of enzymes for glucose uptake as long as a dose of < 200 mg/kg was used.

Abstract
Protein kinases are stimulated during the microbicidal responses of neutrophils. In particular, the activation of protein kinase C causes the phosphorylation of p47-phox, one of the cytosolic components of NADPH oxidase. Phosphorylated p47-phox was accumulated not only by PMA treatment, but also by calyculin A treatment. However, p47-phox phosphorylated by calyculin A treatment lost its ability to activate NADPH oxidase. Several protein kinases were activated by calyculin A treatment. Furthermore the phosphorylation sites of p47-phox by calyculin A treatment were different from those by PMA treatment. These results indicated that calyculin A-activated kinases phosphorylated p47-phox at the site different from that phosphorylate by protein kinase C, resulting in suppression of NADPH oxidase activation.

Abstract
It has been suggested that jasmonic acid (JA) could be an integral part of a general signal transduction system regulating inducible defense genes in plants. It was reported that treatment with an elicitor (N-acetylchitoheptaose) induced production of phytoalexin in suspension-cultured rice (Oryza sativa L.) cells. In this study, the role of JA in the induction of phytoalexin production by N-acetylchitoheptaose was investigated. Exogenously applied ([plus or minus])-JA (10-4 M) clearly induced the production of momilactone A, a major phytoalexin, in suspension-cultured rice cells. On the other hand, in rice cells treated with N-acetylchitoheptaose, endogenous JA was rapidly and transiently accumulated prior to accumulation of momilactone A. Treatment with ibuprofen, an inhibitor of JA biosynthesis, reduced production of momilactone A in the cells treated with N-acetylchitoheptaose, but the addition of ([plus or minus])-JA increased production of momilactone A to levels higher than those in the elicited rice cells. These results strongly suggest that JA functions as a signal transducer in the induction of biosynthesis of momilactone A by N-acetylchitoheptaose in suspension-cultured rice cells.

Abstract
ent-Kaurene synthase B (KSB) was purified 291-fold from a crude enzyme preparation from endosperm of pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.). Separation of ent-kaurene synthase A and KSB was achieved by hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The fractions containing KSB activity were further purified by diethylaminoethyl, phenyl, and hydroxyapatite column chromatography. Using sodium dodecyl phosphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the purest enzyme preparation showed a major band at an apparent molecular mass of 81 kD. The amount of protein in this band was correlated with KSB activity after diethylaminoethyl and hydroxyapatite chromatography. The N terminus of the 81-kD protein was blocked. Therefore, the protein was partially digested with protease and the amino acid sequences of the resulting major peptide fragments were analyzed. A polyclonal antibody was raised against a synthetic peptide based on the longest peptide fragment combined with a keyhole limpet hemocyanin. The antibody recognized only the 81-kD denatured protein and not the native KSB. The properties of KSB were examined using the phenyl-purified enzyme preparation. The Km value for copalyl pyrophosphate was 0.35 [mu]M, and the optimal pH was 6.8 to 7.5. The KSB activity required divalent cations such as Mg2+, Mn2+, and Co2+, whereas Cu2+, Ca2+, and Ba2+ inhibited the activity.

Abstract
The emergence of superoxide anion radicals (O2-) in the guinea pig inner ear following acoustic trauma was investigated by histochemical methods. Five minutes after exposure to sound at 120-125 dB SPL for 3 h, an O2- reaction product was detected in the cochlea along the luminal membrane of the marginal cells of the stria vascularis. This reaction product could not be found at 30 min, but reappeared at 2 h. The first appearance of O2- is not explainable by our studies, but the second appearance may be related to recirculation of strial blood flow after blood flow stasis. The present observations raise the possibility that free radicals are produced in the inner ear after acoustic trauma and lead to inner ear damage.

Abstract
We studied involvement of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins in activation of NADPH oxidase in guinea pig neutrophils. Pervanadate, which is the oxidized form of orthovanadate, induced O2- production and protein tyrosine phosphorylation in neutrophils. O2- production induced by pervanadate was more sensitive to the tyrosine kinase-specific inhibitor, ST-638, as compared with the production induced by PMA. On the other hand, staurosporine more selectively inhibited PMA-induced O2- production than pervanadate-induced production. These results indicate that tyrosine kinase, not protein kinase C, is involved in pervanadate-induced O2- production. The tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins were detected in both the cytosol and membrane fractions prepared from pervanadate-induced neutrophils. In order to examine if tyrosine residues of some components of NADPH oxidase were directly phosphorylated, tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins were removed from solubilized membranes prepared from the pervanadate-stimulated neutrophils by immunoprecipitation with an anti-phosphotyrosine anti-body. NADPH oxidase activity in the solubilized membranes was not decreased by the treatment. These findings suggest that the components of NADPH oxidase are not tyrosine-phosphorylated by pervanadate treatment, that tyrosine phosphorylation may be involved in the signal transduction pathway of NADPH oxidase activation by pervanadate, and that this pathway is independent of the activation by protein kinase C.

Abstract
p47-phox is one of the cytosolic activation factors of NADPH oxidase in neutrophils and known to translocate to plasma membranes and function by protein kinase C-phosphorylation. In cytosol fraction, prepared from calyculin A-treated neutrophils, the activity of cytosolic factor to activate NADPH oxidase was more reduced than that from PMA-treated cells. But, p47-phox did not translocate to the membranes, even if p47-phox was hyperphosphorylated in the calyculin A-treated neutrophils. Such hyperphosphorylated p47-phox seemed to lose the activity to constitute NADPH oxidase complex.

Abstract
Heterologous tumor cells (human chronic myelogenous leukemia K-562 cells) were injected into the perilymph and skin in guinea pigs in order to study the induction of NK cell activity in the inner ear. An in vitro transmission electron microscopic and immunohistochemical study showed that K-562 cells were attacked by guinea pig large granular lymphocytes. K-562 cells injected through the round window membrane were found to be targeted by NK cells emerging from surrounding venules after 7 to 9 days. During this time morhological changes occurred in the organ of Corti and stria vacularis. These findings suggest that the inner ear response to foreign cells induces activation and invasion of NK cells which occur relatively late compared with those in other organs such as skin.

Abstract
Two cDNA clones, cLRG5 and cLRG11, that respond to gibberellin (GA) were isolated from seeds of photoblastic lettuce (Lectuca sativa L. cv. Grand Rapids) by differential screening. Northern blot analysis indicated that the levels of LRG5 and LRG11 mRNAs were raised to slightly higher levels 10 h after the start of GA treatment and the levels were maintained at least for further 8 h, while those in the control seeds gradually decreased. Red light irradiation had effects similar to GA treatment. The cLRG5 insert encodes a putative polypeptide of 380 amino acids that is highly homologous to alcohol dehydrogenases from several higher plants. With regard to the cLRG11 insert, no homologous gene has been reported.

Abstract
The effect of acoustic trauma on cochlear strial circulation was investigated immunohistologically in the guinea pig. Kanamycin was used as a tracer of blood flow. Moreover, histochemical examinations were made to reveal the emergence of free radicals in the cochlea following acoustic trauma. At 5 min (5 min after intense sound exposure 120-125 dB SPL, 3 h) the blood flow in the stria vascularis was greatly diminished. At 2 h the strial blood flow started to recirculate and at 6 h it appeared to have returned to normal. Superoxide anion radicals (O2-) emerged along the luminal membrane of the marginal cells of the stria vascularis at 5 min. O2- disappeared at 30 min, but reappeared at 2 h. The cause of its emergence at 5 min was obscure. However, the strange phenomenon that O2- emerged again at 2 h seemed ascribable to the re-circulation of strial blood flow after sound exposure.

Abstract
Two successful and two unsuccessful synthetic routes are described for the conversion of commercially available fungal gibberellins to the antheridiogen GA73 methyl ester (5), originally isolated from gametophytes of the fern Lygodium japonicum. The more efficient route began with the Birch reduction of either the GA7 derivative (31) or methyl gibberellate 3,13-dimesylate (32) to give the ∆1(10),16-diene acid (33), which was converted into the ∆1,9-diene acid (40) by means of a four step procedure. This intermediate could be selectively hydrogenated to the ∆9-ene derivative which underwent iodolactonization and then elimination of HI to afford enone (29), Wittig methylenation of which furnished the target antheridiogen (5). In addition, (29) was functionalized at C12 by free radical bromination to give access to the 12β-hydroxy derivative of (5), i.e. (6), a new antheridiogen isolated from Lygodium circinnatum.

Abstract
Inner ear pathology was studied in adult rats with lipoid nephrosis induced by puromycin aminonucleoside. Although no abnormality was observed in auditory brain-stem responses, significant changes were noted in the stria vascularis. The most striking observation was that intermediate cells were markedly swelled, there-by pressing adjacent marginal cells. Severely affected marginal cells have vacuoles and increased lysosomes and protruded toward the endolymphatic space. The organ of Corti remained virtually intact. Although the vestibular maculae were relatively normal, type I hair cells in the semicircular canal underwent a conspicuous vaculolization. These findings support a postulate that the inner ear is liable to damage in lipoid nephrosis.

Abstract
An adult case of anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary trunk was reported. The catheterization studies revealed significant amount of left to right shunt in the pulmonary trunk and anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary artery with well developed and marked tortuously dilated collaterals from the right coronary artery. During surgery, blood flow waveforms of the LAD was measured using pulsed Doppler velocimeter. After temporary closing of the origin of left coronary artery, blood flow of the LAD markedly decreased. A-C bypass grafting to LAD was performed successfully using saphenous vein and graft flow rate was 220 ml/min. These findings suggest that the coronary blood flow through the tortuously dilated collaterals after ligation of the origin of left coronary artery was insufficient to perfuse the left coronary artery.

Abstract
We report a sporadic case of periodic ataxia characterized by recurrent attacks of vertigo and ataxia. A 62-year-old male was known to have nystagmus at the age of 18. He has had recurrent episodes of vertigo and ataxia since the age of 48. During an attack remarkable downbeat nystagmus, limb ataxia predominant in the lower extremities and ataxic gait were present. MRI demonstrated an atrophy of the anterosuperior region of the cerebellar vermis. Vertical nystagmus, dysesthesia of gloves and stocking type and deep sensory disorder persisted during interictal intervals. There is no finding which supports this case to be vascular disorder, congenital anomaly, tumor, infection or demyelinating disease. We thought this case to be periodic ataxia and to belong to vestibulocerebellar ataxia reported by Farmer and his colleagues.

Abstract
Three patients with spasm of internal mammary arteries and gastroepiploic artery immediately after coronary bypass surgery were reported. On completion of the revascularization, all patients could not be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass. The flow velocity waveforms of the arterial grafts measured by pulsed Doppler velocimeter showed only small systolic component without diastolic flow and the palpation revealed profound spasm partially in the arterial conduits. Although all patients could be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass only after insertion of a saphenous vein graft, two of them died on the next day. In all patients, free flow measured prior bypass was considered to be sufficient and a technically satisfactory anastomosis was felt to be performed. If a profound hemodynamic instability as a result of intractable spasm of arterial conduit occurred after completion of coronary bypass surgery, an additional saphenous vein graft should be placed before discontinuation of cardiopulmonary bypass.

Abstract
We analyzed surface glycoproteins of human natural killer (NK) cells by utilizing lectins. Among the lectins tested, wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) was found to bind preferentially to CD16(Leu11)-positive lymphocytes as determined by two-colour flow cytometry. Analysis of glycoproteins in the lysate prepared from NK cells with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) gel electrophoresis followed by Western blotting and 125I labeled WGA staining revealed that a glycoprotein with an M(r) of 65 kDa was strongly bound to the lectin, but no corresponding glycoprotein was detected in the lysate of T lymphocytes. This glycoprotein (GP65) gave several spots in the pI range 4.1-4.6 on 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Sialidase treatment of GP65 resulted in a single spot on the 2-dimensional gel, suggesting that GP65 is heterogeneous in the degree of sialylation. GP65 was shown to be exposed on the cell surface, since it was radiolabeled with 125I by the lactoperoxidase-catalyzed method. We next isolated GP65 from human peripheral blood lymphocytes by a combination of chromatography on a cation-exchange column and a WGA-agarose column and preparative SDS gel electrophoresis. It is suggested that GP65 is a novel surface glycoprotein on human NK cells.

Abstract
Since 1987, arterial conduits have been used in 78 of 130 cases receiving coronary bypass surgery, including 25 treated by arterial conduits alone. The use of arterial conduits was mainly indicated to the anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), but the saphenous vein had to be used in 39 percent, 47 of 120 cases receiving bypass grafting to the LAD for various reasons including a combination of multiple obstructive arteriosclerosis, multiple bypass graftings in the aged, unstable angina, emergency operation and no suitable artery for a conduit as indicated by preoperative angiography. Hereafter, arterial conduits for coronary bypass grafting to LAD should be used in many more cases to the best possible advantage.

Abstract
The freezing behaviour of water in polyurea microcapsules was studied through DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and ESR (electron spin resonance) measurements under a non-equilibrium condition to show that supercooling of water becomes more noticeable with decreasing droplet size of the liquid. Thermodynamics of small systems was found applicable to analyse the experimental findings, even though the process of water freezing in the microcapsules was not of an equilibrium nature.

Abstract
Four surgically treated cases of aortic valve regurgitation associated with the aortitis syndrome were reported. All patients were female and ranged in age from 38 to 51 years. In two cases, obstructive lesions of the aortic arch branch were seen in aortograms. Three patients had no inflammatory findings at the operation and one was operated on after improvement of inflammatory findings by steroid therapy. Aortic regurgitation was caused by annuloaortic ectasia, and aortic valve replacement was performed by the everting mattress suture method in all cases. One patient with stenosis of the left carotid artery, occlusion of the left subclavian artery, and hypertension died of extended cerebral damage due to suspected low flow cerebral perfusion during cardiopulmonary bypass. The other three patients are doing well 4 months to 11 years after surgery without paravalvular leakage. In cardiac surgery for the aortitis syndrome with an obstructive lesion of the aortic arch branch, deep hypothermic and high flow cardiopulmonary perfusion is required to prevent ischemic brain complications during surgery.

Abstract
To clarify the causative factors responsible for the development of effort angina in aortic stenosis, the influence of an increase in heart rate by atrial pacing and isoproterenol infusion on the phasic left coronary flow velocity waveforms were studied using a pulsed Doppler velocimeter during cardiac surgery. Coronary flow velocity waveforms in aortic stenosis was characterized by a slowly increased diastolic inflow and an elongation of the time from the onset of diastole to the diastolic peak velocity. An increase in heart rate by pacing brought about a marked decrease in diastolic coronary flow since the slowly increasing diastolic flow was cut with the onset of following systole. On the contrary, after an increase in heart rate by infusion of isoproterenol, diastolic increasing rate in the coronary flow waveform accelerated and diastolic peak velocity markedly increased. As the results, isoproterenol produced a significant increase in diastolic coronary inflow.

Abstract
Young shoots of normal maize (Zea mays L.) were used to determine both the stepwise metabolism of ent-kaurene to gibberellin A(12)-aldehyde and the endogenous presence of the members in this series. Each of the five steps in the sequence was established by feeds of 17-(13)C, (3)H-labeled kauranoids to cubes from the cortex of elongating internodes, to homogenates from the cortex of elongating internodes, and/or to homogenates from dark-grown seedlings. The (13)C-metabolites were identified by Kovats retention indices (KRI) and full-scan capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Five substrates and the final product in this sequence were shown to be native by the isotopic dilution of 17-(13)C, (3)H-labeled substrates added as internal standards to extracts obtained from elongating internodes. Evidence for the isotopic dilution was obtained by KRI and full-scan capillary GC-MS. Thus, we document the presence in young maize shoots of the metabolic steps, ent-kaurene --> ent-kaurenol --> ent-kaurenal --> ent-kaurenoic acid --> ent-7 alpha-hydroxykaurenoic acid --> gibberellin A(12)-aldehyde.

Abstract
A case of Takayasu's aortitis with severe bilateral coronary ostial stenosis is reported. A transaortic coronary endarterectomy was performed and sufficient patency was confirmed angiographically 9 years after the operation. This is the first report of late coronary angiography after a transaortic coronary ostial endarterectomy in Takayasu's aortitis. The efficacy of this procedure for coronary ostial stenosis in Takayasu's aortitis is emphasized.

Abstract
In patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis for a long period, arteriosclerosis progresses rapidly, and the incidence of ischemic heart diseases is high. We performed coronary artery revascularization in a patient with chronic renal failure complicated by angina pectoris in whom discontinuation of dialysis was sometimes needed for hypotension during dialysis. Her postoperative course was uneventful. Problems in intra and postoperative management of dialysis patients are reported.

Abstract
Between 1981 and 1989, ten patients underwent replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve by a composite graft for an aneurysm of the ascending aorta with aortic regurgitation. The first two cases using an SJM aortic valve prosthesis and Teflon felt-pledgeted mattress sutures for the proximal anastomoses required a coronary bypass graft from the tube graft to the anterior descending coronary artery because of difficulty in completing the graft-left coronary ostial anastomoses. In the subsequent seven cases, an SJM mitral valve prosthesis with a large, soft cuff for a valved conduit was sewn in reverse and a thin wall Teflon roll was used for the Teflon felt of the pledgeted mattress suture in the proximal anastomoses. As a result, anastomoses between the tube graft and coronary ostia were performed easily and successfully in eight patients. One case with Marfan syndrome required reoperation nine years after the first operation for recurrence of the aneurysm of the aortic arch. Thus, the need for careful and continued follow-up is important in the Marfan syndrome.

Abstract
Blood circulation in the cochlear lateral wall after exposure to a non-physiological level of sound (120-125 dB SPL, 3 h) was investigated immunohistologically. Kanamycin (KM), which was expected to function as a tracer of blood flow, was administered to guinea pigs 5 min to 21 h after sound termination. At 5-30 min, KM was scarce in the capillaries of the stria vascularis (CSVs), whereas abundant KM was present in the spiral ligament vessels. These findings differed markedly from those in non-sound-exposed animals. After the initial period, KM gradually did enter into the CSVs, but its pattern of existence there differed from the normal pattern. These observations suggest that acoustic trauma causes blood stagnation in the strial capillaries, leading to strial dysfunction.

Abstract
The efficacy of Lasix-vitamin therapy (L-V therapy) for sudden deafness (SD) was compared with that of conventional therapeutic regimens. There was no significant difference in efficacy between the two therapies. However, in fresh cases (within 7 days from onset of SD), L-V therapy gave a cure rate of 42.3% and an effectiveness rate of 88.4%, these rates being higher than those obtained with conventional therapy; and in cases treated within 4 weeks, L-V therapy was significantly more effective than conventional therapy. Besides, in cases with severe hearing loss (more than 70 dB hearing level) or vestibular symptoms, which were important factors of prognosis, L-V therapy proved more efficient. The efficacy of L-V therapy for other sensorineural hearing loss was also evaluated. In Meniere's disease, L-V therapy proved effective in 45.9% of cases, but with only a 20-30% effectiveness rate in other cases, e.g. idiopathic hearing loss, head and neck injury, noise-induced hearing loss and chronic otitis media.

Abstract
When tonsillar B cells were cultured in the presence of exogenous interleukin-6 (IL-6), a small portion of them differentiated into plasma cells which seemed to have IL-6 receptors on their surfaces. The number of plasma cells tended to be greater in the tonsils of children than in the tonsils of adults. When tonsillar cells collected by Ficoll-Conray's method were cultured in medium containing IL-6, T cells differentiated and the number of activated T cells increased. Of the four subsets of T cells, this effect of IL-6 was strongest on cytotoxic T cells. IL-6-mediated proliferation and activation of cytotoxic T cells tended to be greater in the tonsils of children than in those of adults. IL-6 is produced in some tonsillar macrophages. The number of macrophages producing IL-6 was very different in different subjects. However, the number of macrophages producing IL-6 in tonsils of children tended to be greater than the number in tonsils of adults.

Abstract
Transplacental distribution of kanamycin (KM) to 35-60 day embryonal or fetal inner ear of the guinea pig following maternal treatment was investigated by an immunohistological technique. KM, administered at any stage of pregnancy, migrated through the placenta and entered into the cochlea. The drug pathway to the organ of Corti seemed to consist of two routes: the spiral vessels and the capillaries of the spiral limbus. However, at an early stage of pregnancy, KM was detected only slightly in the area corresponding to the stria vascularis, probably due to immaturation of strial capillaries.

Abstract
Fifteen patients with Meniére's disease (8 male and 7 female) in whom as of December 1988 a follow-up audiovestibular study could be made for 2 to 10 years, and who received conservative treatment were assessed for prognosis of the disease, particularly for hearing. Hearing, when compared with the initial level, was deteriorated in 8 ears (by 60 dB HL or more in all cases), remained unchanged in 8 ears (41-68.8 dB HL) and improved in 2 ears (by 21.3 or 35 dB HL). The vertigo period was longer and attacks tended to occur more frequently in the groups with deteriorated hearing and with unchanged hearing than in the group with improved hearing. Patients whose hearing (during remission) dropped by more than 10 dB from the initial hearing level (during remission) within 3 years of the first audiovestibular examination tended to show a further declining hearing level afterwards. This was interpreted as indicating that the outcome of hearing can be predicted on the basis of observations (audiograms) made during the initial 3 years of the disease.

Abstract
The present immunohistologic study demonstrates that cochlear strial blood circulation is markedly damaged in guinea pigs subjected to intense acoustic stimulation. In contrast, autonomic unbalance of the inner ear induced by resection or electric stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion has no appreciable effect on cochlear strial blood flow. In consequence, although strial blood circulation in the cochlea is susceptible to pathological change in some conditions, it does not appear to be affected by autonomic unbalance alone.

Abstract
Morphological changes of the spiral vessels of guinea pig after rock music exposure (110-120 dB SPL, 1-3 h) were investigated. Characteristic of rock music is an almost incessant sound production with narrow dynamic range, and high energy in the low tone area. Morphometrical study showed that the lumina of the spiral vessels have a tendency to dilate at all turns in 1-2-h-exposure groups, but tended to constrict, through only at the 2nd turn, in the group of 3-h exposure. This finding that early dilatation of the spiral vessels later turns into constriction may be one of the causes of noise induced temporary threshold shifts.

Abstract
[17-(13)C,(3)H]-Labeled gibberellin A(20) (GA(20)), GA(5), and GA(1) were fed to homozygous normal (+/+), heterozygous dominant dwarf (D8/+), and homozygous dominant dwarf (D8/D8) seedlings of Zea mays L. (maize). (13)C-Labeled GA(29), GA(8), GA(5), GA(1), and 3-epi-GA(1), as well as unmetabolized [(13)C]GA(20), were identified by gas chromatography-selected ion monitoring (GC-SIM) from feeds of [17-(13)C, (3)H]GA(20) to all three genotypes. (13)C-Labeled GA(8) and 3-epi-G(1), as well as unmetabolized [(13)C]GA(1), were identified by GC-SIM from feeds of [17-(13)C, (3)H]GA(1) to all three genotypes. From feeds of [17-(13)C, (3)H]GA(5), (13)C-labeled GA(3) and the GA(3)-isolactone, as well as unmetabolized [(13)C]GA(5), were identified by GC-SIM from +/+ and D8/D8, and by full scan GC-MS from D8/+. No evidence was found for the metabolism of [17-(13)C, (3)H]GA(5) to [(13)C]GA(1), either by full scan GC-mass spectrometry or by GC-SIM. The results demonstrate the presence in maize seedlings of three separate branches from GA(20), as follows: (a) GA(20) --> GA(1) --> GA(8); (b) GA(20) --> GA(5) --> GA(3); and (c) GA(20) --> GA(29). The in vivo biogenesis of GA(3) from GA(5), as well as the origin of GA(5) from GA(20), are conclusively established for the first time in a higher plant (maize shoots).

Abstract
New phosphonylating and coupling agents for the synthesis of oligodeoxyribonucleotides via H-phosphonate approach have been developed. Tris(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propyl) phosphite, prepared by the reaction of lithium salt of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propoxide with PCl3, reacts with deoxyribonucleosides in the presence of a catalytic amount of triethylamine to produce in the high yield the corresponding deoxyribonucleoside 3'-H-phosphonate units. The use of a new coupling reagent, 1,3-dimethyl-2-chloro-imidazolinium chloride (DMCI) for the internucleotidic H-phosphonate bond formation via the H-phosphonate approach is also discussed in detail.

Abstract
In 6 patients with pure aortic stenosis, the flow velocity waveforms in the left anterior descending coronary artery were studied using an 80-channel 20-MHz pulsed Doppler velocimeter before and immediately after aortic valve replacement. All patients showed normal coronary arteriograms. The left anterior descending coronary artery flow velocity waveform in aortic stenosis was characterized by a reverse flow in the first half of systole and a slowly increasing diastolic inflow. After aortic valve replacement, the reverse flow in the first half of systole disappeared in all patients, but an end-systolic reverse flow was discerned in 5 of 6 patients. The increasing rate of the diastolic inflow was augmented in all patients. After aortic valve replacement, the time from onset of diastole to the diastolic peak velocity was shortened from 176.8 +/- 28.8 to 90.5 +/- 18.8 ms (p less than 0.01), and the diastolic peak velocity increased from 90.5 +/- 28.0 to 122.5 +/- 17.2 cm/s (p less than 0.05). Blood pressure and heart rate, however, did not change significantly before and after valve replacement. These changes in the left coronary artery velocity waveforms after valve replacement suggest the beneficial effects of removal of aortic stenosis on human coronary artery inflow.

Abstract
The effects of an intravenous infusion of nitroglycerin on the hemodynamics and bypass graft flow to left coronary artery were studied in sixteen patients during coronary artery surgery. Systolic blood pressure, cardiac output and left ventricular minute work were not affected by 0.2 microgram/kg/min of nitroglycerin but graft flow volume especially diastolic graft flow increased significantly and the characteristics of flow velocity waveform in the graft became more diastolic predominant. By 1 microgram/kg/min of nitroglycerin a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure, cardiac output and graft flow were recognized, however diastolic graft flow was preserved despite of a decrease in left ventricular minute work. These findings demonstrate that nitroglycerin can be safely administered intravenously during aortocoronary bypass surgery, and suggest that nitroglycerin improves the balance of myocardial oxygen demand and supply, and relieves myocardial ischemia.

Abstract
Pyrexia which occurs at late stage after prosthetic heart valve replacement must be suspected to be caused by prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). However, since confirmatory diagnosis is difficult, we are concerned about the treatment for so many cases. We encountered two cases who were suspected PVE at late stage after prosthetic aortic valve replacement and diagnosed miliary tuberculosis at autopsy. Here, we present a report of the two cases.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analyses of Gibberellins in Vegetative Shoots of Normal, dwarf-1, dwarf-2, dwarf-3, and dwarf-5 Seedlings of Zea mays L. PLANT PHYSIOLOGY 1988; 88:1367-72. Abstract
Gibberellins A(12) (GA(12)), GA(53), GA(44), GA(19), GA(17), GA(20), GA(29), GA(1), and GA(8) have been identified from extracts of vegetative shoots of normal (wild type) maize using full scan capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Kovats retention indices. Seven of these gibberellins (GAs) have been quantified by capillary gas chromatography-selected ion monitoring using internal standards of [(14)C(4)]GA(53), [(14)C(4)]GA(44), [(2)H(2)] GA(19), [(13)C(1)]GA(20), [(13)C(1)]GA(29), [(13)C(1)]GA(1), and [(13)C(1)]GA(8). Quantitative data from extracts of normal, dwarf-1, dwarf-2, dwarf-3, and dwarf-5 seedlings support the operation of the early 13-hydroxylation pathway in vegetative shoots of Zea mays. These data support the positions in the pathway blocked by the mutants, previously assigned by bioassay data and metabolic studies. The GA levels in dwarf-2, dwarf-3, and dwarf-5 were equal to, or less than, 2.0 nanograms per 100 grams fresh weight, showing that these mutants are blocked for steps early in the pathway. In dwarf-1, the level of GA(1) was very low (0.23 nanograms per 100 grams fresh weight) and less than 2% of that in normal shoots, while GA(20) and GA(29) accumulated to levels over 10 times those in normals; these results confirm that the dwarf-1 mutant blocks the conversion of GA(20) to GA(1). Since the level of GAs beyond the blocked step for each mutant is greater than zero, each mutated gene probably codes for an altered gene product, thus leading to impaired enzyme activities.
