Nut-like MOF/hydroxylated graphene hybrid materials for adsorptive desulfurization of thiophene

A series of novel metal–organic framework/hydroxylated graphene hybrid materials were successfully designed and synthesized with different ratios of Cu-BTC and hydroxylated graphene and their adsorption performances for thiophene from oils were evaluated.

Effective Dose of Remifentanil for Control of Haemodynamic Response to Insertion of the Streamlined Liner of the Pharyngeal Airway

Objective

To determine the dose of remifentanil needed to achieve successful insertion of the Streamlined Liner of the Pharyngeal Airway (SLIPA™) without the development of hypertension in 95% of the patients.

Randomised controlled trial.

Methods

A total of 100 ASA I or II patients requiring SLIPA insertion were randomly assigned to receive normal saline (Group C) or one of the four different doses (0.5 µg/kg [Group R0.5], 1.0 µg/kg [Group R1], 1.5 µg/kg [Group R1.5] or 2.0 µg/kg [Group R2]) of remifentanil. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at preanesthetic baseline, preinserton, and every one minute during the initial 3 minutes period after insertion.

Results

A Probit model of remifentanil concentration was predictive of successful insertion of SLIPA without the development of hypertension. The ED95 of remifentanil needed to suppress haemodynamic response from SLIPA insertion was 1.39 µg/kg (95% confidence interval, 1.06-2.61 µg/kg).

Conclusions

A single administration of remifentanil can effectively suppress haemodynamic changes due to the insertion of SLIPA.

Streamlined Liner of the Pharynx Airway: Randomised Comparison of Size Selection Strategies with Regard to Patient Height versus Thyroid Cartilage Width

Introduction

Streamlined Liner of the Pharynx Airway (SLIPA) is a disposable supraglottic airway. There are two strategies to select the size of SLIPA: by height and width of thyroid cartilage. This study compared the utility of the two strategies in selecting the optimal size.

Methods

One hundred forty-two patients were randomly divided into two groups with size selection by height (H) and the maximal width of the thyroid cartilage (T). The SLIPA size was selected by height in group H, and by the width of thyroid cartilage in group T. After inserting SLIPA, the investigator made note of the oropharyngeal leakage pressure (OLP) and the degree of insertion difficulty. We set the OLP as a primary outcome. In cases of an OLP <15 cmH2O, the investigator manipulated the apparatus to try to reposition it. If air still leaked, another attempt was made using a SLIPA one size larger until an OLP >15 cmH2O was achieved in up to three attempts. After insertion, the investigator measured the inspiratory and expiratory tidal volume. Post-operatively, the presence of blood or regurgitated fluid on the device was evaluated.

Results

OLP for group T was higher than that of group H (p=0.009). The need for manipulation and the leak fraction was higher in group H than in group T (p=0.008 and 0.034, respectively). The degree of insertion difficulty, number of trials and incidence of blood and regurgitated fluid on the device were similar between the two groups.

Conclusions

Both the width and height of thyroid cartilage can be used for selecting the optimal SLIPA size. (Hong Kong j.emerg.med. 2015;22:303-311)

A glimpse of gluons through deeply virtual compton scattering on the proton

The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)-a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting the distinct energy dependences of the DVCS and BH amplitudes. In the regime where the scattering is expected to occur off a single quark, measurements show an intriguing sensitivity to gluons, the carriers of the strong interaction.

Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus Papain-Like Protease 1 Antagonizes Production of Interferon-β through Its Deubiquitinase Activity

Coronaviruses (CoVs), such as human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63), severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV (SARS-CoV), murine hepatitis virus (MHV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), encode papain-like (PL) proteases that inhibit Sendai virus- (SeV-) induced interferon (IFN-β) production. Recently, the crystal structure of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) PL1 has been solved, which was similar to that of SARS-CoV PL2pro, which may antagonize host innate immunity. However, very little is known about whether TGEV PL1 can antagonize host innate immune response. Here, we presented evidence that TGEV PL1 encoded by the replicase gene could suppress the IFN-β expression and inhibit the nuclear translocation of interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3). The ability to antagonize IFN-β production was dependent on the intact catalytic activity of PL1. Furthermore, TGEV PL1 exerted deubiquitinase (DUB) activity which strongly inhibited the retinoic acid-induced gene I- (RIG-1-) and stimulator of interferon gene- (STING-) dependent IFN expression. Our data collectively suggest that TGEV PL1 can inhibit the IFN-β expression and interfere with RIG-1- and STING-mediated signaling through a viral DUB activity. Our study has yielded strong evidence for the TGEV PL1 mechanisms that counteract the host innate immunity.

Subunit Vaccines Consisting of Antigens from Dormant and Replicating Bacteria Show Promising Therapeutic Effect against Mycobacterium Bovis BCG Latent Infection

To screen effective antigens as therapeutic subunit vaccines against Mycobacterium latent infection, we did bioinformatics analysis and literature review to identify effective antigens and evaluated the immunogenicity of five antigens highly expressed in dormant bacteria, which included Rv2031c (HspX), Rv2626c (Hrp1), Rv2007c (FdxA), Rv1738 and Rv3130c. Then, several fusion proteins such as Rv2007c-Rv2626c (F6), Rv2031c-Rv1738-Rv1733c (H83), ESAT6-Rv1738-Rv2626c (LT40), ESAT6-Ag85B-MPT64_<190-198> -Mtb8.4 (EAMM), and EAMM-Rv2626c (LT70) were constructed and their therapeutic effects were evaluated in pulmonary Mycobacterium bovis Bacilli Calmette-Guérin (BCG) - latently infected rabbit or mouse models. The results showed that EAMM and F6 plus H83 had therapeutic effect against BCG latent infection in the rabbit model, respectively, and that the combination of EAMM with F6 plus H83 significantly reduced the bacterial load. In addition, the fusion proteins LT40 and LT70 consisting of multistage antigens showed promising therapeutic effects in the mouse model. We conclude that subunit vaccines consisting of both latency and replicating-associated antigens show promising therapeutic effects in BCG latent infection animal models.

Monitoring rate and predictability of intraoperative monitoring in patients with intradural extramedullary and epidural metastatic spinal tumors

STUDY DESIGN

Single-center retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the monitoring rate, sensitivity and specificity of intraoperative monitoring (IOM) during removal of intradural extramedullary (IDEM) or epidural metastatic spinal tumors. Also, to assess the efficacy of monitoring somatosensory-evoked potentials (SSEP) when motor-evoked potentials (MEP) are not measurable.

SETTING

The Neuro-Oncology Clinic, National Cancer Center, Korea.

METHODS

Patients (n=101) with IDEM or epidural metastatic spinal tumors at the cord level underwent surgeries monitored with SSEP and/or MEP. The monitoring rate was defined as negative when MEP or SSEP could not be measured after reversal of the neuromuscular block under general anesthesia. Positive IOM changes included more than a 50% change in the MEP or SSEP amplitude and more than a 10% delay in SSEP latency.

RESULTS

MEP was measurable in 73% of patients. The MEP monitoring rate in patients with motor power grades of 3 or less was 39%, which was lower than that of SSEP (83%). The sensitivity, specificity and predictability of MEP for motor changes were 93, 90 and 91%, respectively. Conversely, the sensitivity, specificity and predictability of SSEP were 62, 97 and 89%, respectively. In patients in whom MEP was not measurable (n=24), SSEP was monitored with a predictability of 83%.

CONCLUSION

In cases of extramedullary spinal tumors, MEP shows a higher sensitivity than SSEP does. However, the monitoring rate of MEP in non-ambulatory patients was lower than that of SSEP. In those cases, SSEP can be useful to monitor for postoperative neurological deficits.

Diurnal variations and source apportionment of ozone at the summit of Mount Huang, a rural site in Eastern China

Comprehensive measurements were conducted at the summit of Mount (Mt.) Huang, a rural site located in eastern China during the summer of 2011. They observed that ozone showed pronounced diurnal variations with high concentrations at night and low values during daytime. The Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model was applied to simulate the ozone concentrations at Mt. Huang in June 2011. With processes analysis and online ozone tagging method we coupled into the model system, the causes of this diurnal pattern and the contributions from different source regions were investigated. Our results showed that boundary layer diurnal cycle played an important role in driving the ozone diurnal variation. Further analysis showed that the negative contribution of vertical mixing was significant, resulting in the ozone decrease during the daytime. In contrast, ozone increased at night owing to the significant positive contribution of advection. This shifting of major factor between vertical mixing and advection formed this diurnal variation. Ozone source apportionment results indicated that approximately half was provided by inflow effect of ozone from outside the model domain (O_3-INFLOW) and the other half was formed by ozone precursors (O_3-PBL) emitted in eastern, central, and southern China. In the O_3-PBL, 3.0% of the ozone was from Mt. Huang reflecting the small local contribution (O_3-LOC) and the non-local contributions (O_3-NLOC) accounted for 41.6%, in which ozone from the southerly regions contributed significantly, for example, 9.9% of the ozone originating from Jiangxi, representing the highest geographical contributor. Because the origin and variation of O_3-NLOC was highly related to the diurnal movements in boundary layer, the similar diurnal patterns between O_3-NLOC and total ozone both indicated the direct influence of O_3-NLOC and the importance of boundary layer diurnal variations in the formation of such distinct diurnal ozone variations at Mt. Huang.
