Abstract
Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most prevalent hematologic malignancy. Aberrant microRNAs (miRNAs) expression has been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of MM. In this study, we further demonstrated that miR-137 was significantly downregulated in MM and negatively correlated with clinical prognosis. Moreover, we described the epigenetic regulation of miR-137 and its association with progression-free survival in MM patients. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-137 in MM cell line (miR-137 OE) increased its sensitivity to bortezomib and eprirubicin in vitro. Also, some high-risk genetic abnormalities in MM, including deletion of chromosome 1p22.2, 14q or 17p13, and gain of chromosome 1p22.2 were detected in NCI-H929 empty vector (NCI-H929 EV) treated cells but not in the NCI-H929 miR-137 overexpression (NCI-H929 miR-137 OE) cells. Luciferase reporter assays demonstrated that miR-137 targeted AURKA. Ectopic expression of miR-137 strongly reduced the expression of AURKA and p-ATM/Chk2 in MM cells, and increased the expression of p53, and p21. Importantly, miR-137 overexpression together with bortezomib treatment significantly inhibited tumor growth in MM xenograft model. Taken together, this study demonstrates that miR-137 is epigenetically silenced in MM, and overexpression of miR-137 could reduce drug resistance and overcome chromosomal instability of the MM cells via affecting the apoptosis and DNA damage pathways.

Abstract
Perovskite materials are now an important class of materials in the application areas of photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Inorganic perovskites such as BiFeO3 (BFO) are promising photocatalyst materials with visible light activity and inherent stability. Here we report the large area sol-gel synthesis of BFO films for solar stimulated water photo oxidation. By modifying the sol-gel synthesis process we have produced a perovskite material that has p-type behaviour and a flat band potential of ∼1.15 V (versus NHE). The photocathode produces a density of -0.004 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus NHE under AM1.5 G illumination. We further show that 0.6 μmol h(-1) of O2 was produced at an external bias of -0.5 V versus Ag/AgCl. The addition of a non-percolating conducting network of Ag increases the photocurrent to -0.07 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus NHE (at 2% Ag loading) with an increase to 2.7 μmol h(-1) for O2 production. We attribute the enhancement in photoelectrochemical performance to increased light absorption due light scattering by the incorporated Ag particles, improved charge transfer kinetics at the Ag/BFO interface and reduced over potential losses. We support these claims by an observed shift in flat band and onset potentials after Ag modification through UV-vis spectroscopy, Mott-Schottky plots and j-v curve analysis.

Abstract
Aim of the present study was to compare the outcomes between exchanging reamed nailing (ERN) and augmentative compression plating (ACP) in treatment of femoral shaft nonunion after intra-medullary nailing (IMN) retrospectively. A retrospective, multicentre study was performed with 188 patients (190 cases)with femoral shaft nonunion after IMN, who received therapy with either ERN (n = 92) for 44/92 (47.8%) cases of nonisthmal nonunions and 48/92 (52.2%) cases of isthmal nonunions or ACP (n = 98) for 48/98 (49%) cases of nonisthmal nonunions and 50/98 (51%) cases of isthmal nonunions. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss, time to union, union rate, postoperative draining volume and complication rate were compared between ERN and ACP group. After a mean follow-up of 4.6 years (range 1-8.1 years), the bone union occurred in 98/98 (100%) cases in -total ACP group versus 80/92 (87%) cases in total ERN group [odds ratio (OR) = 3.34, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.8-1.6]. Twelve cases with re-nonunion in the total ERN group included 10/12 (83.3%) cases of nonisthmal nonunions and 2/12 (16.7%) cases of isthmal nonunion with cortical bone defect > 3 cm. The average time to union, the intraoperative blood loss and the complication rate in total ERN group were also both significantly more than that in total ACP group (p = 0.031, p = 0.042, p = 0.028). No -significant difference was found in the average operation time between the two total groups (p = 0.213). However, for nonisthmal nonunions, the mean operation time for ERN group was 126.8 ± 19.6 min in -comparison to ACP group (88.6 ± 15.2 min), significant difference was found between ERN group and ACP group (p = 0.021). ACP could obtain the higher bone union rate and shorter time to union than ERN in the treatment of femoral shaft nonunion after failed IMN. Especially for nonisthmal femoral shaft nonunions or isthmal.

Abstract
One early triumph of quantum physics is the explanation why some materials are metallic whereas others are insulating. While a treatment based on single electron states is correct for most materials this approach can fail spectacularly, when the electrostatic repulsion between electrons causes strong correlations. Not only can these favor new and subtle forms of matter, such as magnetism or superconductivity, they can even cause the electrons in a half-filled energy band to lock into position, producing a correlated, or Mott insulator. The transition into the Mott insulating state raises important fundamental questions. Foremost among these is the fate of the electronic Fermi surface and the associated charge carrier mass, as the Mott transition is approached. We report the first direct observation of the Fermi surface on the metallic side of a Mott insulating transition by high pressure quantum oscillatory measurements in NiS2. Our results point at a large Fermi surface consistent with Luttinger’s theorem and a strongly enhanced quasiparticle effective mass. These two findings are in line with central tenets of the Brinkman-Rice picture of the correlated metal near the Mott insulating state and rule out alternative scenarios in which the carrier concentration vanishes continuously at the metal-insulator transition.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives: To describe observations of one-year follow-up of subjects treated on a multi-center, non-randomized study with a single fraction of intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT) using the Xoft® Axxent® Electronic Brachytherapy System® (eBx®) immediately following surgical resection of early stage breast cancer.
Methods: Two-hundred forty three (243) subjects were treated at seventeen (17) US hospitals. Upon meeting the inclusion/exclusion criteria, patients underwent partial mastectomy, placement of a balloon applicator suitable to the surgical bed in the lumpectomy cavity and inflated with saline (30 – 75 cc). The skin was temporarily closed over the balloon and ultrasound examination performed to confirm that the balloon surface-to-skin distance was > 1.0 cm. A single fraction of intra-operative radiation therapy was delivered to the lumpectomy cavity using the Xoft System. The prescribed dose was 20 Gy at the balloon applicator surface, and the mean treatment time was 10.2 minutes. After treatment, the balloon was deflated and removed, and skin sutured.
Results: Two-hundred forty two (242) subjects received the prescribed dose of 20 Gy; one subject received 21 Gy. Eighteen (18) subjects were removed from the primary analysis post-IORT due to positive surgical margins (N=2), positive sentinel lymph nodes (N=13), or balloon surface-to-skin distance < 1 cm (N=3). However, these eighteen subjects will continue to be followed for the duration of this 10-year study. The mean follow-up for the two-hundred twenty five evaluable subjects is 494 days (range 300-465 days). The mean patient age was 65 years (41-89). Forty-nine subjects (21.8%) had ductal carcinoma in situ, one-hundred seventy one (76%) had invasive ductal carcinoma, and five (2.2%) had unknown histology. The DCIS nuclear grade was evenly distributed between high (N=18) and low/intermediate (N=23); 5 were unknown. Invasive cancer was Grade 1-2 in 142/171 cases. Two-hundred twelve subjects (94.2%) had T1 lesions, eight (3.6%) had T2 lesions, and five (2.2%) were unknown. The mean tumor size was 10.6 mm ± 6.4 mm. At the time of the last subject visit, 49/318 reported adverse events were Grade 2 or higher, and only 1/100 had serious side effects, i.e. infection. One patient died of aortic aneurism and two developed secondary malignancies, i.e. ovarian cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The most frequent side effects were seroma (12.5%), erythema (9.1%), and induration (7.5%). Cosmesis was excellent to good in 95% of cases.
Conclusions: IORT using the Xoft System as part of the conservative treatment of breast cancer is safe, with low morbidity. Early results from this multi-center trial demonstrate this short, convenient course of radiation therapy for select patients with early stage breast cancer has excellent-to-good cosmetic results and a low rate of low-grade adverse events.

Abstract
Because of its transverse nature, spin Hall effects (SHE) provide the possibility to excite and detect spin currents and magnetization dynamics even in magnetic insulators. Magnetic insulators are outstanding materials for the investigation of nonlinear phenomena and for novel low power spintronics applications because of their extremely low Gilbert damping. Here, we report on the direct imaging of electrically driven spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) in the ferrimagnetic insulator Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12} based on the excitation and detection by SHEs. The driven spin dynamics in Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12} is directly imaged by spatially resolved microfocused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Previously, ST-FMR experiments assumed a uniform precession across the sample, which is not valid in our measurements. A strong spin-wave localization in the center of the sample is observed indicating the formation of a nonlinear, self-localized spin-wave "bullet".

Abstract
Laser ablation of bulk target materials in liquids has been established as an alternative method for the synthesis of nanoparticles colloidal solutions mainly due to the fact that the synthesized nanoparticles have bare, ligand-free surfaces since no chemical precursors are used for their synthesis. InSb is a narrow band gap semiconductor which has the highest carrier mobility of any known semiconductor and nanoparticles of this material are useful in optoelectronic device fabrication. In this paper a bulk InSb target was ablated in deionized (DI) water or ethanol using a nanosecond (20 ns) or a femtosecond (90 fs) pulsed laser source, for nanoparticles synthesis. In all four cases the largest percentage of the nanoparticles are of InSb in the zincblende crystal structure with fcc lattice. Oxides of either In or Sb are also formed in the nanoparticles ensembles in the case of ns or fs ablation, respectively. Formation of an oxide of either element from the two elements of the binary bulk alloy is explained based on the difference in the ablation mechanism of the material in the case of ns or fs pulsed laser irradiation in which the slow or fast deposition of energy into the material results to mainly melting or vaporization, respectively under the present conditions of ablation, in combination with the lower melting point but higher vaporization enthalpy of In as compared to Sb. InSb in the metastable phase with orthorhombic lattice is also formed in the nanoparticles ensembles in the case of fs ablation in DI water (as well as oxide of InSb) which indicates that the synthesized nanoparticles exhibit polymorphism controlled by the type of the laser source used for their synthesis. The nanoparticles exhibit absorption which is observed to be extended in the infrared region of the spectrum.

Abstract
Introduction Parathyroid carcinoma accounts for 0.5% to 5% of all cases of primary hyperparathyroidism and it is an exceedingly rare endocrine malignancy first described in 1933. Most experts recommend en bloc excision at initial surgery as the only chance for its cure. Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy have not been demonstrated to be beneficial in parathyroid carcinoma. Some patients have multiple recurrences or metastases. Therefore, new therapies are urgently needed. Inhibition of the interaction between Programmed Death Receptor 1 (PD-1) and Programmed Death Receptor Ligand 1 (PD-L1) enhances T-cell responses in vitro and mediates clinical antitumour activity. Aim We analysed the expression of PD-L1 in parathyroid cancer to evaluate its potential as target for immunotherapeutic strategy. Subjects and methods A cohort of 18 patients were diagnosed with primary or metastatic parathyroid cancer. Immunohistochemistry was performed in 18 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens using a rabbit monoclonal antibody. A 5% cut-off value was applied for PD-L1 positivity. Results The anti PD-L1 antibody showed a pre-dominantly membranous staining pattern in parathyroid cancer cells. Programmed Death Receptor Ligand-1 expression was found in 22.2% of all parathyroid carcinoma cases. There was no correlation between the expression of PD-L1 with lymph node metastasis, gender and age (P> 0.05). Conclusion This expression of PD-L1 in human parathyroid cancer suggests that patients with parathyroid cancer could profit from immunotherapeutic strategies using anti-PDL1 antibodies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Rat models of hypobaric hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension are commonly used in studies of chronic mountain sickness, while there are few researches specially focusing on these rats model. This study aims to exploring possible pathogenesis of hypobaric hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension by experimenting on hypobaric hypoxia-induced PH rat models at different simulate- altitudes. MATERIALS AND METHODS 32 healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into six groups of different degree and time period of hypobaric hypoxia. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure (m PAP), right ventricular pressure (RVSP), the right ventricle (RV), left ventricular (LV), ventricular septal (S), the right ventricular hypertrophy index (RVHI) [calculated under the formula of RV / (LV + S)], hematoxylin-eosin staining, elastic fibers staining, the ratio of the thickness of vascular wall to its outer diameter (MT%), the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the middle vascular wall to the total vascular cross-sectional area (MA%); the α-SMA, and the Ki6 expressions were detected to evaluated the pulmonary hypertension. RESULTS There were significant differences of the mPAP, RVSP and RVHI value between the hypobaric hypoxia groups and the control group (p < 0.05). The mPAP, RVSP, RVHI, MT%, MA%, α-SMA, and Ki6 of rats in model groups at an altitude of 3KM were higher than those of the control group, which raised gradually with the number of weeks increasing. The mPAP, RVSP, RV / (LV + S) value, MT%, MA%, α-SMA, and Ki67 of the 5KM-4W group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Rat models with pulmonary hypertension at different altitudes have been successfully established by automatic adjusting hypobaric hypoxia chamber. Exposure to a low oxygen environment at a simulate-altitude of 3 km for 8 weeks have caused the pathological remodeling of pulmonary vascular walls and pulmonary hypertension, and further led to a series of pathological changes, including right ventricular hypertrophy. This model is easy to be replicated with good reproducibility and provides evidence for clinical trial of drugs.

Abstract
We investigate the phenomenon of HIV eradication at the early stage of the infection and evaluate the chance of the eradication with a mathematical model. We employ an extracellular deterministic model of the HIV infection dynamics and modify the model to include the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antiretroviral HIV drugs. In addition we consider clinical experiments for the prevention of HIV infection using pre-exposure chemoprophylaxis treatment. Exploiting the mathematical model we implement the experiment numerically. The study in this paper is supported by the clinical results and provides a theoretical explanation for the results. The result suggests that the protocol of the experiment eradicates the virus in HIV infected patients.
